Great question. I think its for a few reasons: A lot of mothers, let alone single mothers, do not even know themselves or other women. They can not articulate their own programming or nature. They do not think critically about it. Just because she is your mother, she is still a woman. Most of their behavior is subconscious. Just because she loves you almost unconditionally doesn't mean she is knowledgeable. Women also have a very strong own group bias. Women are more valuable to the species because they are the limiting factor in reproduction, so they generally get preferential treatment. Men are more disposable. This is also subconsciously deeply ingrained in humans and exists even within mother-son dynamics.

I think it's 50/50. Women are judging personality but not in the are you a good man for me way. A woman is like a basketball coach overseeing try outs, she's seen some guys in action, heard some guys are good/bad, and don't know what the hell is up with some dudes all together. But the truth is women (even the young ones) do evaluate personality but on the basis of does his personality match up to what I have been conditioned to believe leads to good sex (and bad boys cornered the market and will be given first dibs to prove it) . It's the reason most women don't value "good guys" until later in life when finding a personality that fits the mold of a good partner takes precedence (or realistically rivals) finding a personality that produces good sex. But i don't know shit tho I grew up sheltered so I'm just starting to take a stab at this game.
