I've finally been to the Philippines for 3 months this year, and I totally agree to everything you said. But yeah, the warmth of the people and the quality of ladies and women there, and the nature and scenery, makes it amazing, despite the the absence of good service and infrastructure (generally speaking). Keep it up, Paul! Happy for you and your wife btw! =)

Great advice Paul. I first came to the Philippines in 1980 on a Navy ship and was stationed here from 1983 to 1987. It was a similar dynamic. What I found is that some guys were successful because they realized that they had to WORK and could not remain drunk every night for several years. Retirement has a similar adjustment. If you want to live EVERY day of your life like you are on vacation and continuously overeat and get drunk while sedentary your life will be short. Fat, drunk and stupid does not impress anyone in the entire world.

I appreciate your clarity about women. I’d say it’s closer to 90% in the US. For me I’m leaving the US not for one country in SE Asia but instead I’ll slow travel Malaysia. Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia and the Philippines for a few years and find my home. I’ve lived this many times in my life and I’m very passionate about that lifestyle. I’ve been to the Phillipines and SE Asia recently for long term adventures. I agree the Phillipines isn’t easy logistically. Many challenging experiences but I look at them as a way to understand myself and look at the positives, and there are many positives. Proper preparation can set the table for a better experience. Patience, patience, patience is important. Go slow! Have an idea of how a foreigner can easily get in trouble before one goes. With any culture many things aren’t how they seem initially. I’m a person who looks at the consequences before I make a choice and that makes for pleasant experiences.

For me spending 6 months a year in Asia, I explored the PI including Duma (10 trips). I ended up buying a place in Thailand. Better food, lower cost of living, power stays on, internet works, better healthcare, better availability of used motorbikes, power bills a lot cheaper, even the fruits in the markets are just better quality. I love the people in the PI but I don't want to live there.

The main two issues i grappled with here are the heat (unbearable) and the traffic jams everywhere you try to go. This is no paradise! The only big win in the Philippines is the women, as they are open to age gap relationships. The wilderness and the islands are also amazing but there are hardly any parks, green spaces, or even sidewalks to go for a stroll. The cities are a mess in the Philippines

Now it's been years since I went there, and I'll probably take another 5-8 years until I return and try again. But one thing I know for sure...: If you've never been there, or have been there but didn't like it much (like me), and you can't afford living in IT Park or near Ayala Mall in Cebu (or a very highscale neighborhood in other 1st class cities), then don't bother.

So true Paul. I go back to the US once a quarter so I do get a reprieve from the heat, noise, garbage, traffic, paperwork, inefficiencies, air pollution, and poor infrastructure. That said the pros do outweigh the cons but if people just base coming to the PH on cost it’s not the only cheaper country to live. Costs in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Portugal, parts of South America are on par and all have better food, infrastructure, healthcare than the PH. Though more Filipinos speak English than those locations. My personal budget is around $US1800 a month when I’m in the PH and that’s with no rent. Patience is the key to living in the PH. The chickens shit into the water, the shrimp eat the chickenshit, they harvest the shrimp and feed the offal back to the chickens. A closed system. Ingenious in its efficiency and simplicity. After this I will never eat any asian chicken or any asian fish product again.

I had good and bad experiences like every where else in the world. I'm a danish citizen, living & working in Copenhagen. As I see it, the material life here is better than the Philippines but most of other parts of life sucks😢! Which part is most important for me or someone else, that's what motivates us to make a radical change of our lives! I have to work 8 years more till I reach the retirement time (it really sucks!). There's a lot of differences if I compair Denmark with Philippines but I still prefer Philippines not only for their beautiful women but for the lay back life with it's slow pace! I think trying to get and negotiating an apartment or somewhere to live is difficult because you are dealing with landlords whoo sometimes don't have written leases or tell you things that not in the lease. Also fixing stuff in the house is almost impossible to get them to fix it. That why I know many people I know moved. Also just have to accept the foreigner tax unless you have a gf or filipino friend to by it. One thing is annoying is people cutting in line all the time.

Thanks for the honest reflection, wish more channels did the same, there's but a few that do. I think the unfortunate reason for the rose-tinted videos is that it sells and makes the creators money, even if it misleads their viewers. Which will in turn lead to more people going there than would otherwise. That continues to push up prices due to gentrification, making it worse by the year for the locals and the expats there already. Too much of a good thing and all that. Lisbon in Portugal is a good example of the damaging effect this has, and Medellin in Columbia to a lesser extent so far. I wonder if the popular spots of the Philippines aren't following suit due to the coverage over the past few years? If that's the case if we extrapolate similar trends over the next 5-10 years, will it go the same way as Lisbon and other such places? To that point, it's good that you are suggesting more places in SE Asia. If interest is spread then the damage will be less and everyone can have a higher quality of life, wherever they end up going to visit or stay. ps. This is as an outside observer so far.

Very good point. I completely agree. There is another option too with some compromises. Staying in Kuala Lumpur or in Bangkok, setting up permanent residence there and visit the Philippines when we feel like. Maybe even fly our Filipina there. That way it’s easier and cheaper to fly to the Philippines and we have accessible western amenities. It’s just gonna be a lot of moving and changing of apartments as obviously it would be too expensive to pay 2 apartments at the same time.

The city properties where even worse because the cities allow the homeless to permanently camp out on the sidewalks. We as expats have higher standards of living compared to the locals and want certain things that in reality isn't necessary. I've lived in the provinces for a bit and it's rural but still doable. You need to have a budget and decide what your needs are compared to your wants. We are coming to live and not just survive like we do in the west so expect to be around the 2k a month mark all in and if you get more then that you put that away for a rainy day. If you make less than 1700 a month then don't bother coming as the benefits in your own country far outweigh any benefits that you may gain from going overseas. Be smart and do your homework and do your recon missions before you move over permanently.

My Filipino born wife and I have been going over there nineteen years in a row except for the two year Covid..we stay for up to three months because she still works, (she’s twenty years younger than me), I’ve been retired for twenty two years...there are times when we talk about taking a break but the life in the Philippines always draws me back in. We built a very nice duplex house and one of her brothers lives on one side with his family and another brother lives in another house on our two acre property which is a rice field. We live in a small village and, of course, everybody knows the only white guy in the neighbourhood. I’m the guy who respects all people down to the poorest and I’ve always been welcomed by all...I never felt unsafe there which I could not say about Manila or Cebu City. Upon arrival at the airport, I get a free one year visa because I’m married to a Filipino born Canadian wife but as I said, we only stay for three months per year. As far as health care is concerned, I don’t bother with travel insurance because it’s prohibitive and I am covered by my Canadian health care program which is free. On two occasions I had two small procedures in the hospital and sent in my bill and was reimbursed by cheque in six weeks. For Canadians, make sure that your receipt is in English. In the Philippines it is but not in other Asian countries so you ask for them to write it in English. When it comes to food prices, if you shop in the large supermarkets, you’re in for a shock to find many basic items more expensive than in the west, especially if they are imported like Kellogg’s corn flakes, coffee and cheese. We try not to purchase too much and stick to the local markets for fish meats and vegetables. The fish is outstanding where we live...boats come in early every morning with their catch. In conclusion, if you don’t live too opulently, I can see living in a small town under $2000 CDN with rent utilities and a small motor scooter for transportation included ....cheers🍷🇨🇦

The Philippines 🇵🇭. Which Philippines? Makati? Davao? Iloilo? Province or City? I'm married to a Filipina, and we have kids, so our priorities are different from all these single bloggers.

I was living 15 years in the Phils Boracay and then I went to live in north Luzon Isabels in a farm with my gf. They spray poison everywhere, even on the mangoes trees. My gf mother has a 70 H farm and I saw how poisonous is the Filipino way. The chickens eat “ dog food” the pigs and the fishes the same. They make 3 runs cè harvest a year and they poison it so much. It’s a real mess.

Hi Paul, you're right about quality. I wasn't that impressed with the Mactan condo you leased/rented. It was very small and the quality was lacking, IMO. Frankly, you didn't look like you were that comfortable there. Overall it wasn't bad, but damn, that typhoon really slammed Mactan Newtown. All those floor level businesses got gutted. Gio looked pretty shaken up. I think he said he could actually feel the building swaying from the storm. I don't think that nice grocery store ever came back.

I have been there 10x various provinces...what I found is I didn't make REAL Filipino friends. It seemed to me I only made $ aquaintences.

I’m keeping houses in America and plan to spend half a year in Philippines half in states. Should both be paid for in 2 more years so no reason to sell. Looking forward to trip hopefully in spring to look around Baguio

You paint a realistic picture Paul. Regarding pesticides, it is widely used here without any knowledge about it. Perhaps there are guidelines, but they are not really enforced. So wash your vegetables thoroughly. Also fruits (like mangoes, bananas) are heavily sprayed. Methods are also used to ripen fruit. They use calcium carbide (kalburo) powder for that which can cause severe health problems and therefore illegal in most countries.

Yes, indeed. It’s totally unregulated. Growers will do whatever enhances profitability. After all isn’t that what you expect ? I’m amazed at the naïveté expressed by some , thinking food in the Third World is grown “ naturally” But , oddly , the same people will fuss over the tap water which is also naturally contaminated

Interesting. I've heard vloggers mention produce there often lacks flavor and sometimes is bitter.

I live in Cebu City and have gotten very good health care. In some ways even better than the U.S, and im not exaggerating when i say that. The women though are unfortunately becomming immersed in thd Tik Tok Culture so if you're older you might want to find a partner closer to your age. But almost everything mentioned here was spot on. You definitely need to acquire a thick coat of skin as well as patience.

I spend about $2,200 a month and I’m living very simple. These guys who say they can live on $1,000 a month are not being honest. Maybe if they live in a shanty shack and eat rice for every meal. No insurance at all, no car, cheapest internet package. No air conditioning, no hot water. You have to live like a Filipino which isn’t the easiest thing to do

Really depends on where you live, I spent about 1,700 usd , that included myself and gf in a 2 bed house. That was in 2021 , I am sure prices are up so 2200 sounds about right.

@@paulsasianadventure8050 I agree location does matter, but all good things must end and unfortunately, inflation is catching up with the Philippines. Groceries and electric especially have jumped up so has the rentals. I use to see $200-400 a month rentals all the time but they are harder to find

Im still on the fence to which Asian country to retire? As tempting as it may be to be lured in by the sweet Filipina, my only obstacle is noise pollution. Where could i find peace ? Does anyone know if living on a boat in a marina offers less roosters barking dogs and karaoke, and car horns ?

Many places in the Philippines, make a list and travel, stay in different villages / cities then make a decision. No need to make decision before you get here, be adventurous

i started researching on my own about philippines because it seemed like the vloggers were describing a paradise. after my research i found that living in the philippines is an awful idea. its not really cheap, every service is substandard, and the scams are a daily thing. the people are not really into foreigners. they just want their money. why would i want to live there at all?
