Today we discuss why The Lord of Death Mephiston, crossed the Rubicon Primaris... And not, Dante.
The events we are discussing today are from the Warhammer 40,000 novel "Darkness in the Blood" by Guy Hayley. As always I really recommend you read the story for yourself first. @@NueThunderKing In the lore the Dreadnoughts, it's suffering from horrifically injuries, encased in a armored coffin, wired into it still alive, with some still feel the pain of the injuries sustained(some more so a phantom pain, much like phantom limb pain or sensation soldiers feel after the loss of a limb). Like all humanity, I think the Astarties do dream, & the ones encased dream more often, for it seems as older ones tend to lose themselves over time bit by bit each time they are awakened. The Battle of Calph is a good example of this as a freshly encased Ultramarine is woken by something, he at first thinks time for battle, but no techpriests & servanters are attending to him for mission. He checks the other Dreadnoughts beside him, which are older some far older encased, they aren't awakened. He tries to get another one to awake, which he succeeds, but the older Ultramarine awakens rather grumpy, tells the inexperienced one it was a glitch in the system & to go back to sleep. It's a strange bit of Warhammer 40K lore to be still alive, while injured, (Astarties can feel the same emotions like shame or failure when they know ingrained in to them is to carry out the mission to success serving their primarch & the Emperor), wired in & encased in a coffin surrounded by a mechanical body & weapons that you can still fight. Possibly why some go berserk over time for they finally loose themselves into the dream...

@@NueThunderKing At this point Bjorn has been physically active in the Imperium 5 times longer than the Emperor has and Dante is approaching that at 1600 years. (Unification war was M29 iirc when the Emperor first starts his conquests and the great crusade is something like a 1000-1500 years later) so yeah they are both old boys. Still waiting on the Bjorn Guilliman meet as they had met before. Just to get a perspective of the last two astartes based characters currently active. Would be such an interesting conversation with Bjorn probably having a heap of complaints/excuses for the last 10k years he's probably got a list for big blue of things to unwreck that the current imperium doesn't even consider and bobby hasn't had time to learn about yet. edit: also how cool would it be for Bjorn to rubicon as Russ returns to be a familiar face.

To be honest, I'm torn: On the one hand, no one is more deserving of the strength and renewal granted by crossing the Primaris Rubicon than Dante, and Emperor knows he'll need both in the years to come. On the other, the idea of Dante facing down his destiny against Abbadon in front of the Golden Throne as simply himself-- firstborn space marine, legend of the Imperium, but at the core of it all just the boy Luis of Baal Secundus standing to protect his Emperor against the forces of darkness-- gives me the chills. I hope that all these years of teasing something dark and insidious potentially lying beneath the surface of Mephiston's power don't pay off in a fall or betrayal; his posession of a deep secret or understanding of the universe would make more sense, and no matter how they try to insinuate and create mystery around him it just wouldn't make good sense or for a good story to have him fall to chaos or corruption after all he's done.

@@UmbraNupe exactly its his body struggling to deal with being a shard of a Primarch in him. Just like Janus being a Shard of Magnus but Mephiston doesn't have a Malcador to help him. Both will be fine Dante is watched over by the Sanguinor and Sanguinius. Mephiston is a shard and will learn how to control his power. When he does only Demon Primarch's, the top Greater Demons and such will beat him from Chaos. BloodAngels are used to fighting battles both outside and Internal. They will come back stronger.

Dante will be crossing, it’s Inevitable. And he will survive, Sanginious will make sure of it. But I think Dante doesn’t want to for the simple fact he knows it will extend his life even further and he is too tired for that. I think of Dante as Murta from the Lethal Weapon Series: “I’m told old for this Shit.”

I absolutely love this book and series, and the wonderful little human moment, when Dante can't help but sulk a bit, when he learn, that Mepisthon meet Sanguinius in the warp and unlike Dante was given a choice about coming back or passing on. Dante didn't get that option, and he just wants to rest and die so badly. Only his new and enormous burden of having to save and rule half of the Imperium prevents him for going on one final suicide charge against a worth enemy.

Darkness in the blood and the entire trilogy is just must read for any blood angel fan. If they could only figure out how to remove the black angel, even if it killed Mephiston, and combine it with the sanguinor, maybe we could get sanguinius back. The angel returning would complete the entire Space Vampire Renaissance Catholic vibe the Blood Angels have… and would make for a pretty awesome model. I know people hate the idea of primarch returning, especially sanguinius since it’s so pivotal to so much lore, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t go crazy to see him come back.

I really think Dante is too old to survive. He is at least 1500 years old, and considering the success rate is even lower for the Sons of Sanguinius. It's not worth the risk of losing him. I also love the idea that he is such a tough old bastard he doesn't need it.

It was.. a trial, to be sure. I believe the main issue I had during the Rubicon Primaris transformation was all the scrubbing bubbles. You never know true clean until after the Mechanicus literally scrub your soul into rebirth.

Dante isn’t going to turn into Sanguinius. He is a great hero who just wants to die,, but can’t because of duty...but if you are following his story he’s not the special BA. It’s Mephistion, he’s the one who is has has always been changing and connected to Sanguinius in a way. He’s a Shard like Janus.

Dante is old, does not want to live and the procedure has a high lethality. So even if his sense of duty made him fight for survival, it would not be guaranteed. Plus considering the Primaris could be setup for a new type of traitor legions, it could be another way to further the themes of the dark bargain implied to come with overcoming the gene flaw.

A healthy body can support a healthy mind. And since primaris blood angels have better control over the thirst, it's beneficial to have the primaris conversion. It's absolutely essential that the psyker can control himself during combat. Logically, converting librarian into primaris is even more beneficial than doing it on other space marine. The stronger bodies mean they can take shots while staying concentrated on the task at hand. In fact, the marine who benefit the least from the conversion are the Raven guards.

Dante can't die, he is the hope of the blood angels, as close as to sanguineous the chapter ever had, if he dies I'm afraid the whole chapter will go berserk again. Especially if Abbadon or some other chaos force kills him

So Dante will be on the verge of Death but he would of been his normal epic self. He will get hurt in battle and dying. Vulkhan Tu'Shan and his units take heavy casualties to draw fire away and allow the Blood Angels to retrieve Dante. He is saved by Mephiston and the remaining Sanguinary Guard. Corbulo tries his best but fears he can't save Dante. He then goes the procedure to become Primaris. During the procedure Dante sees images of the Sanguinor/Sanguinius and they say You will not hurt anymore and you are still needed. Then Dante is the Gold Armor figure he saw in his vision. Dante: in Cartman's voice : Son of a b....

Dante won't take it because, deep down, he wants the operation to fail rather than suceed. His reasons aren't pure, and he knows it. He might want eternal rest, but he won't take an easy way out to get it.

Mephiston is probably the best Astartes of all the Blood Angels + successors to understand how the Primaris transformation interacts with their gene seed and all it's built-in flaws. It's interesting that the two original Legions with (arguably) the greatest built-in flaws have the greatest conversion rate to Primaris... did they already kill off the 'weaker' marines, or did Caul spend extra time on the BA and SWs Primaris gene-seed? I do think if Dante takes the Primaris conversion, he'll come out as a mini-resurrection of Sanguinius, or at least become the living embodiment of the Sanguinor, otherwise it would be, "woah! You got it the wrong way round - the Blood Angels and Space Wolves have a LOWER rate of surviving the upgrade procedure. It isn't impossible for them to survive it, but the risk is greater.

Dante needs a new model, and a new weapon at that, he will cross it just not in this edition it seems. Give it a few editions and every normal astartes will have gone trough the procedure. GW wont be making any new models for them so that's the outcome I'm hoping for at least, the other options is that the normal ones die out and gets replaced or civil war/cleansing of sort.
