Seth recognizing the lethal potential of a Primaris falling to the Black Rage if Guilliman and Cawl are wrong about the fix, and simultaneously loathing the loss of a legacy of the Sanguine Angel should it be true, aren't mutually exclusive in my mind. His protest to Dante was one based on the shared brotherhood and history of the Sanguinius successor chapters, which is possibly the strongest way he could argue his point to a fellow Blood Angel, and probably his true feelings on the matter of losing the Thirst. At the same time, his distrust of Guilliman and Cawl means that he also considers their claims dubious, and the risk that the flaw has not been corrected but simply tampered with means that what is already a dangerous factor to consider in battle is now potentially even more unpredictable and rests in an even more powerful breed of Space Marines. While it may be in the most blunt and tactless way possible, and may not even have been his intention (though I'm inclined to think it was, because Gabriel Seth is right up there with Dante among Sanguinius' sons imo, and knows what he's doing as a leader) I'd say Seth 'conveyed' all of that to the new captain pretty clearly in the short story. Chapter culture and combat style, concerns over the Black Rage and distrust of the promised fixes, a reminder to not disdain or disrespect previous generations of chapter Marines based on Primaris arrogance, and a tough love welcome to the Flesh Tearers, all in one. Is it the way Sanguinius would have handled it? Hell no. But is it fitting for some of his longest-suffering, hardest-fighting loyal sons? I'd say so. Edit: Misspelled Sanguinius in the first paragraph, I have shamed myself, battle-brothers. I must take on a Death Oath to redeem myself-- to buy all the Sanguinius books in the Black Library and begin a Blood Angels army.

I wanted to point out (in your last video) that the reason Seth feels the way he does: in the novel Devastation of Baal, Seth watched as Sentor Jool and his Knights of Blood chapter went to their deaths to cover for Seth and the Flesh Tearers retreat. It absolutely one of the most beautiful chapters to listen to on the audiobook, Chapter 26. Seth calls for a retreat, and Jool tells him, "We can not go back!" and removes his helmut to show that the Rage has consumed him and caused a flesh-change: the entire chapter now look like Khornate monsters. Jool knows that his chapter is done for and that the best they can do is go out fighting, "It is our penance, it is our due!" Jool urges Set to survive, work to prevent what has happened to the Knights from happening to the Flesh Tearers, to aid Dante, and lastly, to remember them. His last words are that the demons of Khorne covet them for their rage, but he and his Knights will show them that their rage is a Holy Fury. "For we are noble. We are pure." Then they all run into battle against the demons and to their deaths. Seth witnessed this with his own eyes. He realized that even with the their geneseed flaws, even when they had basically lost any human semblance, and with all the sin (blood drinking etc) they had committed, these men fought to the end to be men and did not just surrender to Chaos. Seth firmly believes that the flaws are what make the Blood Angels and their successors powerful. Overcoming those flaws is what gives them the power to overcome all manner of evil the galaxy throws at them.

Because as long as one single Blood Angel lives, he will be master of his spirit. He will not let the abyss that lies in the hearts of us all take him into darkness. That is the truth you do not understand, the truth that Horus has forgotten. It is not the descent toward the shadow nor the rise toward the light that makes us superior. Unspoken here, I think Seth realized in that beating and acknowledgment from the Captain they could fall to the rage. Might be overreading that of course but that's my head cannon. Seth has always been a great character, driving to save his chapter and make them be a proud thing but knowing he cannot quell the beast within does everything he can to make sure other are safe from it or few see it emerge as possible. So being told Primaris didn't have the Rage and Seth anger towards makes more sense in my mind.

Ok, Brother Rho. I can help you understand what is happening here. Consider the following and then you will get the brilliance of the story and the brilliance of Seth here: 1. What happened when Merek Grimaldus was appointed to the position of Reclusiarch of the Black Templars Space Marine Chapter? The High Marshal SLAPPED him. Then said "Let this be the last blow you ever take unanswered" (By Dorn, that's the blood of Dorn, right there) 2. Primaris Marines were held in Stasis. They WERE indoctrinated and ARE VERY LOYAL. As this new Primaris Captain appears and is having to meet with Seth, the new Priamaris has some assumptions of WHO and WHAT he was made to be, yet is truly untested. -THIS is a problem for Seth, and RIGHTFULLY SO. So I take you to number 1 again. Seth employs some pretty ancient human tactics on this new "bigger, faster, stronger, better"...yet untested and unproven CAPTAIN. - The gangs in America have a "jumping in" ceremony. You get your ass torn up by the entire group. Now matter HOW bad you think you are...this is the FORCE that is coming back AT you. As a former officer in the US Army, I can speak to the first hand experience of these type of behaviors when assigned to new units as a young officer. You take me to war, you had better be able to MAKE WAR. AS my father told me once when I was young "Son, you may be able to take me on one day...but in that day, take a moment of pity, for I will be a VERY OLD MAN". This new Captain was given a HARSH, FIRM, and VERY appropriate LESSON and WELCOME. Let's review the lesson learned: 1. Code of the Barbarian: You may be big and bad, but, brother, I am badder- Let the jaw reconstruction and scars serve as a reminder 2. You may think you are stronger- The thirst is REAL- What shall it be for you? - Observe the meditations 3. You haven't been tested- here is what a "Lesser to the Primaris" can do to you. - You have only just begun to learn. Experience MATTERS. 4. You WILL be humble to the Chapter- The Chapter is the SUM of ALL of its parts and you are but a part. Now, This Captain will struggle to become better and to PROVE himself to the Chapter. So who is the Captain trying to now prove himself moving forward (as Seth REPRESENTS the Chapter)? The Chapter- its very symbol. Not Roboute, NOR DANTE. You answer to the HOUSE. - by the way, the Codex Astartes actually MAKES this the prevailing wisdom. Hence Chapters. What we have here is a story of the humbling of a new untested and assumptive Primaris that is being put in his place with a lesson. Final Thoughts: This is a VERY well written story. Seth had NO intention of killing him. (Watch the Space Marines movie that came out quite some time ago and note the new marine getting popped at the end when he told the sergeant to "yield" and ended up on his own ass with the reminder "WE NEVER YIELD")

I agree. It should be obvious. The Chaplain was in lock step with Seth. Lesson learned. Perfect. Seth DOES act like a Black Templar, doesnt he?

Brothers in name only make for poor brothers. To know and respect ones family culture is to create strength at its roots. I believe Seth had a thought or something along the lines of "He's an Ultramarine Captain in Flesh Tearer colors" based on the Primaris captain's behavior.
@Talis171184 жыл бұрын
I this was during a time after Chief Sanguinary Priest Corbulo had ascertained that they do indeed bear the red thirst and momentary lapse of judgement that might be the black rage; Seth might have had a change of heart on his decision. However, he also isn't the type of person to willingly accept untested help from others; and if you are going to be of any assistance in the Flesh Tearer's chapter, you have to be able to take a beating and still have the fire in your soul to fight back.

Great work on this Rho! That was an awesome story, and you told it very well. Definitely a thought provoking tidbit thrown in at the end, when Seth talks about the Primaris falling to the Rage. I Think in the Blood Angels and successor chapters case though, it is going to dependent on the Veteran Tech 1 Marines to help bridge the gap of knowledge early on. The main thing is that it's not like Cawl and Guilliman only portion out the Primaris from Mars ,and there is a break-in period like picking up a new rifle or tool. The technology was given to the Chapters to also begin the creation of their own Primaris forces through the normal means of candidate selection. This allows for chapters to still incorporate the knowledge and traditions that come with becoming a member of the bloodline into the new recruits development. Also lets be real about the likelihood of seeing Seth cross the Rubicon Primaris sooner rather than later. We have Calgar and Mephiston having made the leap and I'm sure tons of people want to the the 40K embodiment of the Doom Marine get into supreme rip and tear mode as well. Anyway, always thrilled to see a new video from you mate, Cheers!

It's funny, this is very much like the struggle for tradition before change. It is like Edmund Burke. Certainly, there will be change over time, perhaps improvement in some fashion. It is without the temperance of developed experience, tradition, and society that establishes the discerning process of what the brotherhood sees as what defines it. Seth instructs the primaris captain in what it means to be smaller, weaker, out-gunned, and with less kit but STILL overcome. Seth shouldn't have been able to win. The Flesh Tearers shouldn't still be walking around, let alone gaining victory. Here in the US, there is sometimes a problem with evaluating a quarterback for the NFL coming up from college. The kid coming up is bigger, faster, stronger, and has a better arm. Their numbers and measurables are simply better. Often though, the kid was a highly coveted recruit, coddled, cherished, and surrounded with the best talent to maximize his skills and with the best equipment so that they can have nothing interfering with their performance. The problem is that this kid was given everything. They are used to only working with the best talent and equipment, only the best input to provide only the best output. What happens in adversity? How do you beat a better opponent? How do you press an advantage when you have no advantage? What will the primaris do when they face the a situation that, rationally speaking, they can't win? It is more than dumb experience, although you do accrue experience. It is the forging and galvanization of the people, the team, the unit in the face of the fire. It is finding a way to push further than you should be able to, to expand the envelope of operation into some way that the enemy did not foresee, it is being willing to suffer to overcome. It is finding out how much deprivation you can really take. For the same reason, you cannot have military training be too civil, too humane, too conventional. There is growth in the struggle, in the pain, in the suffering that you cannot have in comfort or excess. When the primaris face the rage and the thirst, what well can they draw from to resist or give them that one line of influence on the monster they become? Seth just helped that pup captain spin his first line of control for when, by all reason, he is going to lose.

The rage and sorrow on captians face is maybe what every original flesh tearer feels like everyday, even in defeat the captain was enraged, Seth saw himself in him and therefore recognized him as one of the flesh tearers, but in addition to the realization that they are also susceptible to the black rage and red thirst as they are or even more. Seth considers that as a strength, as an indication that they are indeed the sons of Sanguinius and not of Guiliman. I also enjoyed Seths philosophy of fighting, to never stop fighting and take the first initiative until there is nothing but blood left. This resembles in some ways the philosophy of fighting in the Krav Maga club that I trained in before. Use your rage and your determination (to never stop fighting until you cant even life your arms or legs anymore) in order to defeat your opponent. Rage is a powerful ally when you fight, especially when you BLACK out (maybe this means that we also feel at times a portion of black rage hehe). Hope to see more videos about the flesh tearers, I respect Seth a lot, he is not afraid to speak his mind.

This is so crazy. Gabriel sounds so much like a Heretic Astartes or Traitor marine before they change over to chaos and betray the imperium. He echoes the mourneval of Horus and their lodge, he echoes putting the chapter above all else, like so many of the traitor marines. Wth!?! We know the history. We know about the massacres and how those that defied their chapters and looked at a need greater than their chapters and legions are the ones that were the true heroes and loyalist of the Imperium. Sanguinious put the needs of the Empire above his legion. Sanguinious knew that his sons would suffer the red thirst and were touched by Khorne and chaos, but he said "this day they will not fall and will fight for the imperium... Not each other. Gabriel echoes the same sentiment as the marine chapter recently accused of heresy. The Custodes Captain said it as well, you put your brothers and chapter above the Empire (as you always have), above the commands of the Empire. Didn't Magnus do the same, didn't Lorgar also? Not until Gabriel swears the captain in, by what seems like a unceremonious gang beating, does he feel like the Primaris is now a true flesh tearer. In this act, Gabriel has inducted the Primaris into his boys club, his lodge. Gabriel acts as though all the years blood, sweat, and tears they suffered, is what makes them true stock of Sanguinious? But what of the very 1st blood angels... Before Sanguinous was ever found and recovered. Those blood angels with newly painted armor. Gabriel has allowed his pride to twist reason and has actually i dare say... Has allowed the seeds of corruption to be planted in him. The Primaris Captain doesn't want to fight his fellow brother, but Gabriel eggs him on. Dont we remember history... That it was the world eaters, iron warriors, and Emperor's children that wanted to beat their fellow brothers... Ultramarines, lunar wolves,... They all have the propensity to fight but those chapters that teeter on the edge of chaos... Really push it on their fellow brothers or cousins. I'm so reminded of Lucious by this challenge from Gabriel and Lucious's beginnings to fall. Gabriel actually seem to take pleasure in seeing the bloody mess he had caused... Like Lucious did and how a Slannesh daemon or Drukhari would. The Primaris Marine was thinking along the lines of a broader scope. The Imperium of Man as a hold. Guilliman, Dante..., But Gabriel is thinking of "his house". Wth! Wow! This isn't actually a story of Gabriel accepting Primaris, but more of whether Primaris can be made to heel under the authority of Gabriel above all others, sort of like how a Chaos Lord makes those beneath him submit. Wow! So much of what Gabriel Seth has done and said, is akin to a Chaos Lord. Damn.

Seth isn't the only one who has problem witht the direction the Imperium is taking under Guilliman's command. The Ecclesiarchy also resents his atheist mindset. The Black Templars and Fire Angels must also have a problem with him. Dark angels just outright mistrust him. Thing is, many people see Guilliman as an usurper to the Emperor who wants to reform the Imperium they knew and fought for 10k years. Knowing the history of the Horus Heresy, people know Primarchs can betray the Imperium. Maybe they fear Guilliman will succeed where Horus failed.

My opinion of this: Seth was hinting at how Space Marines (in general) are forged within the trials of fire and molding hands of combat. Primaris (presumably) were just built and made and didn’t under go the “traditional” rights as other, previous, Marines. And at the same time, hunting that, IF Primaris Marines are supposedly “stronger” than the Result of a Primaris Marine consumed by the Black Rage, without the traditional “indoctrination’s” of Blood Angels recruits etc... could result in a catastrophe. To me, this is akin to when real life military squad is forced to receive some new “Officer” whom, due to urgency etc..., is only an officer because they received a “College Degree” before the war forced them into combat and earned them an “officer” status without having gone through the rights of passage of original squad members. If that makes sense. Additionally, the Brazen Drakes Cpt was not so much defending the chapter he hadn’t met yet as he was defending himself and his brothers being transported. He was defending his stance that they “have no corruption” as they haven’t been around the original corruption.

Seth has shown he respects angles wrestling with the rage. That in resisting it they show their character. Dante's influence. From his point of view, either the Primaris won't have to face that and are just impostors. Or they will and won't withstand it and are a liability. I think it'll go full circle when a Primaris faces the rage and manages to put the chapters needs first... a play on the role of the Knights of Blood in the devastation.

it truly is a good thing to discuss. The whole argument that Primaris are either the cure as they have no specific modification of any primarch or the ticking bomb which will eventually lead Imperium to it's end. What if primaris start to mutate in various ways as connection of genes? Black Rage + Wolven? Maybe or Cawl was prepared for that? Many questions to answer
@Ower8x4 жыл бұрын
it really surprises me that you are so surprised about the Primaris attitude. after all most of the Chaapter loyality comes from the shared culture , training and indoctrination that comes from the fact that the Marine is recruited locally and trained, transformed and reeducated by the chapter in the way of the chapter ... Toivo is a unnumbered sun, meaning he is among those that were created at Mars by Cawl ... This means not only was he not brought up in the culture of the chapter , he is from a completely different era, as most of those turned into Primaris by Cawl were gathered thousand of years before this. Many of them from the era when the Legions were just split ... for them a Son of a Primarch would be synonymous with the founding chapter ... and even if they were somehow connected to the specific chapter either by originating from that chapters planet the culture of the chapter would be completely different in most cases compared to the 42nd milenium incarnation of course he would have no connection or loyalty to a specific chapter. This also manifests in the fact that most Grayshield Primaris yearn to be assigned to their founding chapter as that is what in their mind it means to be a son of their Primarch and because most of them were taken from the planets of those founding chapter and so they yearn to return home after all this time. We had the example Bjarni and his reaction to the fact that he would not be returning to Fenris because he was assigned to the new Wolfspear chapter created to guard the Pit of Raukos (Dark Imperium novel) The trouble Justinian Parris has with adapting to the Novamarines in the Plague Wars novel, seeing them as nothing but a pale imitation of the Ultramarines .... Or the difference that one Dark Angel Primaris former Greyshield Farren had with his Unforgiven brothers about the treatment of the human female they were questioning ... from the War of Secrets, you even made a video about it almost a year ago ... They have no real connection to the chapters they are assigned, even to the Founding one as there are thousand of years of difference between their are and the one they are now serving in ... and plus they have been trained on Mars. as Farren puts it the "logic of Mars and the human decency of Terra" to show how culturally they are far from their assigned chapters .... sure they are sons of their respective Primarch with all the quirks and tendencies that entails as we saw in the Dark Imperium novel when we saw that mixed company of the Greyshields ... but tempered by Martian and to an extent Terran values because of their training and indoctrination ... As for the Brazen Drake captain that could be down to the which Primarch which we do not know but from their attitude to the about the original Brazen Drakes and the name I would speculate they may have been sons of Vulcan which would explain this.

I think this aspect of the Primaris marines is one of the most interesting things. Wish we would see more of this explored within the lore!
@Ower8x4 жыл бұрын
@@wolflordrho Well its a interesting aspect of the Original Batch of Primaris delivered by Claw ... who are in this situation. It will go away over time as Primaris are created locally by their respective chapters, and they will be steeped in the culture and training of their respective chapter .. Which will results in them behaving as we expect a Space Marine to behave in a given chapter. through there should be changes in some ways given the Primaris Geneseed is said to be more stable and less mutated ... but I am not sure if GW and BL will actually do something with that really. But I do Agree it is a shame we do not have more stories that focus on and explore the original Batch of Primaris. The first reinforcements, the Grey shields, like Bjarni and Parris, people that were taken from their era only to awaken thousands of years later in a twisted caricature of what they once knew, maybe being assigned to chapters they did not even know about as they did not exist in their time. And on the flip side the reaction of those chapters that know nothing but the current state of the Imperium hearing about the time long gone, from the mouth of these displaced ones. We get a hint in the conversation between Ventris and Robute in Dark imperium, when Ventris mentions the Primaris talking about the Imperium as it was and how they knew it .... which really left me wanting to hear some of those stories ...

I don't think the Primaris Brasen Drakes acted like they did because they were loyal to their newly assigned chapter. To me it seemed like they truely felt that what the Custodes was doing was wrong, not to mention that defending their new chapter also meant defending themselves. I also don't think a lot of the Primaris are as loyal towards their newly assigned chapters as the old ones. Primaris (at least the unnumbered sons) weren't made by their chapter. They werent trained by their chapter and this is why they wont feel indebted to their chapter. They could have been assigned to any other chapter of the same lineage and I think that's what it is to them, an assignment. This is what Guilliman intended when he had them fight together in mixed squards from different gene-lines. If their gene-line doesn't matter to them, why should they care about an arbitrary division into chapters?

you mean just like how the legions of the primarchs them self's where not recruited and trained on their worlds ? some of the primarchs also did not really appreciate these new green guys the emperor brought with him.. despite them having fought multiple battles already and being quite experienced they just weren't the same as the primarchs own men from their home world who weren't even space marines at that point. many a primarch had to re indoctrinate their new legions into his worlds costumes and traditions Sets doing the same thing here basically. girly man is basically repeating what the emperor did but instead of finding his sons to unite them with their legion he's looking for his bro's kids to unite them with their new re-reinforcements its the same thing basically history repeats or as George Lucas would say they rhyme .. all the episodes...they rhyme.

I think the fight was a test not only for the captain but also for Seth himself. The idea of "you can only truly know someone after a fight". So Seth tested his mettle and his resolve and, somehow, understood that the primaris will most likely fall to the black rage, has they are not as perfect as Guilliman and Cawl make others believe, though they seem resistant to it. Thus his belief that when they fall, it will be much harder than normal. And with the idea that Primaris marines are not so infallible, he gained some acceptance for them.

I can say I really can relate to his one. As a fairly older guy that is the fighter we have this moments when we talk with other fighters. You never respect somebodies opinions before you know their fighting cred. And sparring is the best for this. And in a berserker style chapter blood and being beat up is a daily routine, Hell I get punched in the face daily to be prepaired. Also the humbling of a new shiny better thing is at Seths mind. He has to be alpha in an alpha setting and can't afford having dissident thoughs in his chapter. The thing that new primaris didn't want to be in the chapter only made him more sure that they are kindred spirits as an astartes with different values. But still his maturity as a chapter master won and he decided to accept aid to his chapter. But not as an aid but as a new weapon to use against enemies of the emperium. Political move sure but smart on all fronts.

I think the first Primaris, who served in the unnumbered sons have less ties to their chapter, because the did not spend years, decades if not centuries fighting for the chapter. The Emperor said, that they are not longer needed and they were hunted down to be replaced with the Space Marines. Maybe the same thing happens to the Space Marines right now. The Primaris Marines are made to be stronger and better than the average Space Marine. But Chapter Master Seth showed the Primaris Captain, that more power isn't everything. The Primaris came fresh from the cloning facilitys and hadn't any experience in battle. If the Primaris really want to be in the Space Marine Brotherhood, they have to proof themselfs in combat.

Seth has spent his life as an Astartes fighting against the flaw in the flesh tearers and during the battle for Baal he almost single handedly held his chapter back from the brink of being lost to rage. I think Seth in equal parts hates the flaw but acknowledges that the black rage and the constant struggle against it is also what defines the flesh tearers as a chapter, it is in equal parts their burden and their source of strength, physically and spiritually. Seth hated the idea of the primaris because without fighting the flaw they would never understand what it meant to be a son of Sanguinius, and would ultimately be lesser for it, and that a few centuries down the line when Astartes had completely been replaced by primaris there would be a chapter who wore the flesh tearers badge and spoke the battle cry, but without the flaw would have no connection to the flesh tearers of old. I think that after he beat that captain to a pulp, Seth saw that rage and sorrow in his eyes and realised that these new marines might have that spark inside of them that ties all the sons of Sanguinius, and that’s what made him decide to accept the primaris.

Seth is an interesting character. He seems like both a pragmatic individual who will utilize whatever tools he has to work with, including the rage, for the salvation of his beloved Imperium, and a brooding philosopher, capable of seeing what is really happening around him in the big picture without the taint of rose colored glasses. There is one thing that is absolute about Seth, Gabriel Seth cares about the Imperium, about the Sons of Sanguinius, About the black rage, about his legions honor, and about the future. I feel like he is legitimately terrified that the primaris will fall and the galaxy will suffer immeasurably more, but that the new blood sent to him are true Brothers of the Blood and thus he will not turn them away but do his absolute best to forge them into true Flesh Tearers.
