People just can't appreciate it unless they've been through something similar. I lost a friend at 25. It's been 12 years and it's still something me and the old band mates can't talk about. One of the things I went through was who was their real friends and who were the fakers. It was a hard thing to go through, thing is Jason was such a fake friend from my perspective, someone who didn't get it, would never get it, and wants to be part of something. I get why he was eaten alive by the band. Metallica should never of hired a replacement bassist so quickly, he really should have been gone after the first year. Like imagine your roommate dies, and the a week later his replacement is doing selfies from his bedroom window talking about how nice the location was. Burton's death was effectively a lottery win for Jason, Jason never understood this neither do most people.

@@paulcarlin5181 Yeah, and you know, I'd love to know how you perceive it - but when I saw Rob audition, man he's humble but he definitely seems like he could hold his own. Like there wouldn't be any insecurities. The reason, atleast for me, why he is such a perfect fit for Metallica is because not only is he just a magnificent bass player - but that he's not a push over, and not someone that wants to exert his ego. I always thought of it as, if you join a band like Metallica - you're about to land a job in what's the equivalent of a massive enterprise. With that, comes a responsibility to be able to fit in, feel accepted, and know that you won't be pushed around easily. I think Hetfield and Lars saw that and respect him for it. Kirk has always been laid back, and he already knew Rob from way back - so they'd get along for sure.

Where I live 🇨🇦 Jason was already somewhat famous to us from his band Flotsam and Jetsam, we already loved his bass playing on the Doomsday for the Deceiver album. We all thought he was killer in that band and that he would be as well in Metallica and he definitely did Not disappoint !!! Nicest person in the world to talk to but live… 🤘🏻that dude is a Bass Demon on stage ! With the vocals to back it up! Jason Newstead Kicks Ass! I can actually see him doing that 👍🏻Jason has always been a class act , so is Rob 😊 I think they would get along perfectly just having a few beers 🍻 and jamming back and forth on bass and guitars 🎸 that would sound bad ass come to think of it 🤔. I love Cliff, I also love Jason, but if he isn’t doing the gig Rob is a perfect choice for Metallica because he has an easy going nature but is a seriously good bass player… But even more importantly to the band when he got the job is Rob was somehow able to get them to see why they always loved doing music as younger dudes! To make them feel good and harness the angry shit in life and rage it out through the music like they always did ! and want to put on a killer show , make new harder edged albums that take Metallica back in time somewhat sound wise. Getting Rob in the band put Metallica back on track closer to the metal sound that they created originally. Is it a bit different, of course it is, it’s 35+ years later and they have all been through a lot like we all have. But listen to the last 3 albums! It’s choppy, hypnotic and heavy with great metal vocals ( James is sounding awesome! 🤘🏻) I even detect some and Justice for All style drumming from Lars here and there on some of the new tracks ( not as stop and go but it’s still kinda in that drumming style at times) . Kirk sounds great and is happier than a mother F’er playing “Greenie” on stage live all the time 😊. The Boys Are Back! 👍🏻 They are sounding wicked good live I’d say at this point a ways into a new album and tour with a decent amount of concert footage out there of a few different shows. Anyone can judge or say what they like… - but for me I’ve been a longtime fan of Metallica for about 40 years now ever since Kill ‘Em All was a new album and Metallica was a new band! (1984, I was 13 and in grade 8 at the time, I’m 52 now😄) through the live cut videos of the new tour that I’ve seen lately it looks and sounds like a true return to form as far as I’m concerned!🤘🏻😎🤘🏻playing some old shit some of the new tracks that rip ! It really sounds awesome and they are all having a great time doing it !

I just saw them this past Friday & Sunday (Aug 4 & 6, 2023) at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. I kept picturing Jason in my head while playing from the black album era. I've been a fan since 1986 and one of the main reasons I picked up the bass is because of Jason. Got backstage passes at MSG in the 90's and after the show Jason was the only one that came out for meet n great, autographs, pics etc. I especially missed Jason when they opened with Creeping Death on Friday night. I was picturing him going into his circle-skipping during the beginning of the "Die!" bass/drum breakdown and then him singing the final verse. Rob is outstanding and have been a fan since he was in Suicidal Tendencies. I went to see Metallica in 1994 at North Swanzey, NH & it was Danzig & Suicidal opening. So I got to watch Rob play bass from row 1 - never thinking he would take Jason's spot in the future. Look up the show I just mentioned on KZbin. Jason passes out 3/4 of the way through, then there is a delay, then they continue without him. Eventually he came back but because of the delay there was no encore (no "One"). Rob is an amazing bassist & person but IMO Jason was a way better fit for Metallica.

Honestly Metallica should've taken influence from AC/DC and Def Leppard, both bands had members that they considered family pass away, but they didn't treat Brian Johnson or Viv Cambell like garbage they welcomed them with open arms Leppard telling people "He may not look or play like Steve, but he fits in well, we knew him as a friend before he joined and that was why" Brian was scared shitless when he joined AC/DC but Angus and Malcolm just told him to relax and just sing as best he could. The biggest difference between Them and Metallica is that THEY TOOK TIME TO MOURN!!! Metallica didn't, Cliff died, they had the funeral and BOOM, 11 days after Jason joined Metallica they were touring Japan. 11 days, think about that for a second. Most people mourn a relationship longer than that.

Saw a vid here on YT, where they have the sound engineer who worked on AJFA, and he said it was Lars SPECIFICALLY who was behind the bass being inaudible on the album. According to him, they had the mix mostly done, and Lars said there was too much bass, so he dropped it down one, then Lars listened again & told him “where the bass is now, turn it down 3 more”. He said he told Lars it would be almost inaudible, but Lars said it’s where he wanted it, and basically ordered him to lower it to that point. I believe the guy had his name taken of the credits, as he didn’t want to take the blame.
