St. Anger is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on June 5, 2003. It was the last Metallica album released through Elektra Records and the final collaboration between Metallica and longtime producer Bob Rock, with whom the band had worked since 1990.
Metallica: Some Kind of Monster is a 2004 American documentary film about American heavy metal band Metallica. The film follows the band from 2001 to 2003, a turbulent period in the band's history which included the production of their 2003 album St. Anger, frontman James Hetfield entering into rehab for alcoholism and the departure of bassist Jason Newsted as well as the hiring of his replacement Robert Trujillo. The title of the film shares its name with the song of the same name from St. Anger.

St. Anger is a personal paradox for me. I hated it so much, that I literally started writing my own Metallica songs. From Tesla, Megadeth, and The Black Crowes as my foremost influences, now my music is a often referred to Metallica. Which is kind of good. It's flattering, but I've had to go back and read do so much material, because it's more Metallica than me. I want to be influenced, not a copycat.

There was a DVD that came with the album back in the day that had the band jamming the album live..and that was the version I always listened to.. It was 10000x better than the studio album, but no one would ever believe me when I tried telling them that the songs were actually pretty good when they played them live because the sound was so much better. I really wish that DVD would get uploaded or something.. Bc I really think that so many people would like it if they heard it..

It's the sound of a band hitting the lowest ebb with their demons, and fighting like hell to hold things together. Yes, this album had to be made - love it or loathe it. No St. Anger, no Death Magnetic or Hardwired To Self-Destruct. It's also the sound of a band preparing dinner with cooking utensils from the days of sea fairing early settlement.

It was their therapy album. It allowed them to begin to find themselves post 90s alternative stuff they did. If not for St. Anger, they don't remember what made them great and don't make Death Magnetic nor Hardwired. It's a necessary album that has one standout track "Sweet Amber" but that's it.

It is definitely one of the most compelling bad albums out there. It is so raw and honest, that it feels like your an awkward third party sitting in on ugly group therapy sessions. Yeah, this is high effort bad, which is always kind of fascinating. I do hope we get a remixed Death Magnetic. That album felt like such a huge "we're back" statement, but the clipping and loudness were an issue then, and have gotten even worse with age. Would love to have a Death Magnetic with the sound quality of Hardwired!

It's the perfect album for when going through a tough time. A few years back I was in a very depressed state and that album really helped me get through it. Wasting your days, dealing with your anger, not feeling in control of your own head and anxiety/depression are perfectly shown in these songs.

We think for us it resonated so strongly because of our position. St. Anger was the first album we ever purchased as an idiot teen dealing with an abusive father, school, depression and beyond. The album dropped at a time when it's rawness was needed for us, and even now the album remains on our cycling playlist not because of nostalgia entirely but because it still resonates with the emotions we were feeling at the time and a reminder of how far we've come. It was actually a bit of a shock when we discovered the album was so hated, and at first we were hurt; it felt bizarre that something that we loved so much was hated nearly universally and even the band members sort of addressed it with sheepish regret. But in time we processed this too, we still remember renting Some Kind of Monster from a local video store and seeing it all shortly after its release. St Anger was the album metallica needed for themselves. And even if they weren't aware at the time, it was an album a lot of other people needed too. It might not be the greatest hits of metallica, or to many people even be 'good', but I think that doesn't matter too much as long as it means something to someone who are we to say any art is bad. This was a random thought and video to find but it was nice to see and be reminded that it was still there.

Even though St. Anger is definitely Metallica's weakest album, I still found some tracks that I enjoyed on it. My World, Frantic, and The Unnamed Feeling to name a few. I could always appreciate it from a standpoint of Metallica wanting to try something different. It's been many years since I saw the Some Kind of Monster documentary and I forgot how turbulent of a time it truly was for this band. When you combine the documentary and the album that came from Metallica during this time period, it definitely makes it a more "peculiar" than a "bad" album in my opinion. Great job Luke!

I've often said that you can tell how good someone's mental health is by how much they hate Saint Anger. I really do think part of why people hate it so much is that it came from such a deep place of struggle for the band that, if you can't easily empathize and hear the pain, fear and well, anger in those songs, it will just sound like the aimless garbage everyone makes it out to be. But Saint Anger was the truth. It's as far from selling out as Metallica has ever been, more authentically themselves than any other album except perhaps Justice (earlier albums had the slightest tinge of Dave, or lots on KEA). They made the album for themselves and not the fans, but they made their first several albums like that too. The difference is that Saint Anger is simply less relatable. But for those of us that can relate to The Unnamed Feeling, for example, there are few albums with more power.

The thing about this documentary and it's according to Dave himself, but Dave Mustaine honestly thought this documentary was phony because they've set him up to be in this. This was still around the time when Dave was still having bad beef with Metallica, something that wouldn't come close to being resolved until The Big Four in 2010. It's a mild takeaway from the sincerity of what Metallica has gone through and nobody really knows for certain if any of this is 100%. Lots of fans think that this documentary and showing people the process of St.Anger was all just to make a big excuse as to why the album was as poorly received among fans. The other point I have to make also, is that this happened right when nu-metal as a genre was more or less popular but also not at the same time, in the middle of the road. Metallica might've known that the metal and rock scene had changed around them to where they can't be the Metallica of the 80s. Plus, they're riding on the other unfavorable albums released prior to St.Anger that also has had fans divided, like Load and ReLoad. I don't know, that's a lot of takes that I have about this documentary. I personally think it's all a show from Metallica based on what I brought up. However, this does shed some light on what your favorite bands could've also have gone through when trying to make albums and their worlds is complicated in doing so. The music world usually ain't all that it seems.

Sometimes, you need to fall a little to realise you need to pick yourself up and get back on track. I remember as a kid, when first getting into metal, A7X, Trivium and BFMV all had new releases which dominated my life and seemed to be setting them up for greatness. City of Evil, Ascendancy and The Poison respectively were huge albums, but each of them had weaker, lighter, less impressive follow ups. I like each of them but suddenly none of the bands seemed like they were going to get that big break I thought they would. A7X eventually made it big but for me, they were never as good as they were in those early years. Same with BFMV. But Trivium whoes album The Crusade flopped hard here in the UK, did something the other two didn't. It came back stronger. Shogun was a masterpiece. And then we got other classics like In Waves, Sin and the Sentence and Court of the Dragon. Trivium, having stumbled, came back heavier, stronger, inspired. And they didn't reach the fame that A7X or BFMV did, but I'd argue they are the far better band. Because like Metallica, they returned to their heavier, more pure metal roots rather than continuing down a path of commercial success with less oomph.

It's note up to the standard of the first 4 by a long way. Overall the drum sound is awful, yet sometimes sounds okay. I like Frantic, St Anger, Monster and Unnamed Feeling but that's about it. I always saw it as Metallica getting back to being a metal/thrash band than the mainstream rock band that did the Load albums and garage days re-re-re-visited covers albums. Couldn't have put it better myself. Bravo. I'm also not the biggest fan of the album, but it is the one that got me into the band back in '03, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Being a diehard Metallica fan, I vividly remember watching Some Kind Of Monster the first time more than every time I've heard St. Anger for just how raw of a ride it was to witness. When it comes to St. Anger, it's far from being a favorite album of mine, but it is... okay. It's not perfect, but as the product of the band's turbulent early 2000s, the album has its moments worth remembering. Frantic is a banger, St. Anger is a cool tune, and I know when I say that I'm in the minority for defending Invisible Kid. I'd go as far as say that if the album would get a rewritten/reworked treatment, pull back on the amount of snare drums and add one or two guitar solos for the hell of it, it would be an enjoyable listen. But we can't change history and Metallica fans got what we got with St. Anger, and whether you love it, hate it or simply feel indifferent, it's worth recognizing what influenced it in the first place.

I was never a fan of this album, especially as this was the first original album Metallica released after I became a massive fan and they changed my entire life. I was so excited to be a Metallica fan who could join in the excitement that comes with the release of a new album!... and then I heard it, and was shocked. I just could not wrap my mind around how this could have happened. And I adored every Metallica album, including Load and ReLoad! So for many years I just pretended St Anger didn't exist. Then the documentary came out, and I went to see it with a mentality of 'there better be a damn good explanation for this!!' I'm glad I saw that documentary, because it really did explain the album and gave me a better understanding of why it exists, what the point of it is, what it's trying to say and so on. I'm still not a huge fan of it, but I understand it, which I think is more important. And yes, without St Anger, we wouldn't have all the fantastic later Metallica stuff. And while I was never put off Metallica by St Anger, I admit the disappointment I felt at the release of my first mega-fan Metallica album has coloured my love for them, and instead of excitement or anticipation when Metallica announce a new album, I feel mostly wariness. Following St Anger up with Lulu didn't help my situation. I will always love Metallica; I am grateful for the music and it's community they introduced me to, I love I've been able to see them live (and hopefully will again later this year!! 🤞🤞🤞🤞), but my relationship with the band has become less of mindless worship and more of a 'I adore you guys, but you really hurt me once. I've forgiven you for that, but it was something so huge that I'm still working on rebuilding trust, which is hard to do when I don't actually know you all personally, and have only the insight you allow me. I don't begrudge your privacy, we just have to accept that a certain wariness is always going to be there going forward.'

Honestly the DVD that came with the CD was way better. The songs are cool and hit properly when the sound isn't all jacked up, like on the CD. never listened to the CD once but I watched the DVD plenty of times.

Metallica has been and probably always will be my #1 favorite band. With that said totally agree with your comments in the video. The album is definitely their worst by far. When it first came out I tried to defend it and grow to love it, but after a while I just couldn't do it lol. However, time for me has been weird with this album. It's been about 20 years since it came out, and hearing what the band does with these songs live by adding solos, shortening them up, and adding some much needed punch has breathed new life into the album for me. Now when I listen to the songs from the album, I actually prefer live tracks of recent years. I can't listen to the album itself, but I do appreciate it. One other thing to add on why it needed to happen: Metallica had lost their way I think. After Load and ReLoad, and then the weird 2 disc album of Garage Inc, Metallica needed to find a way to get back to what they were best at. You heard that transition when they released Death Magnetic followed by Hardwired. St. Anger sort of forced them back to their roots as well.

Yeah. If I knew of this, I would've forgiven them. Dude at some point, all the hurts and pains of being gone from your family for months at a time and you just want to provide like you know you can. It's debilitating and it catches up. Glad they worked through their demons.

2 hot takes. Kinda. 1. I like this record. The tin can doesn't bother me. Neither do the lack of solos and "cheesy" lyrics. 2. Lars is overhated.

I love it tbh the lyrics are really raw & nearly every riff is gold, granted the snare doesn't sound fantastic but it's not distracting enough to stop me enjoying the album.

When I first heard it I completely understood why so many people shit on it, that snare was ugly, production was off, guitar solos would’ve been nice, although considering their situation it actually makes sense why there was none. I recently dived deep into the album and it’s grown on me a lot, it’s one of those albums you could really understand if you were in a bad mood, I wouldn’t mind a remastered version of the album where the snare is fixed and sound quality is improved

I for one am glad that St. Anger happened, because if it didn't we wouldn't have the film SKOM, which is basically Spinal Tap but with a real band. Not just any band either, but the biggest metal band ever. A documentary like that is truly monumental and it's hilarious even with just its premise.

Is the album necessarily good? No, but that doesn't stop me, or anyone else from liking it. I like St. Anger more than I should, and my reasons for liking it differ. Take songs like the title track or Invisible Kid, one of main reasons I like and enjoy those tracks are because of their length, as I'm kind of a sucker for long(ish) songs, and Invisible Kid in particular, I like that song for the sole reason that James is tuned to drop G#. My point being, St. Anger isn't necessarily good, but it is important, and people like me and many others, like and enjoy it.
