Mexico and the U.S. are famous for border tensions. But few Americans realize how dependent they would be on Mexico in the case of a major global war. Let's look at how manufacturing has declined in the U.S., how Mexico is filling that gap, and why it matters for the future of both countries.

I'll admit, I didn't think about Mexico being involved much at first, but once you brought it up, it just clicked, especially the reasons why - and yes, pretty much everything is tied to American companies seeking cheaper labor (hence why literally everything in Walmart has the "Made in China" label, even the stuff that claims to have been made in the US). Two things stand out as to why American manufacturing cannot exist without Mexico, one is more inane than the other. The inane one is the more recent one, and it involves my brother's car, a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria; it is one of the most iconic American cars ever (don't lie, you know _exactly_ why it is iconic), and this one's VIN showed that it was manufactured in Mexico. That might not sound like much, but if one of the most iconic American cars - and a fleet car at that, which comes with the implication of being available at relatively low cost due to the sheer numbers of it produced - had to produced in Mexico says a lot more about American manufacturing (or more accurately, the lack of it) than the "America First" crowd ever want to admit. The other thing is quite historical. It centers around an executive order (IIRC) from President Eisenhower (yes, really), and when you include what was going on before and what happened after it was enacted, well, "f^^^ed up" is the charitable way to describe it. So what was it called? Well, YT would block this comment if I fully spell it out, so if you see this, it means I censored just enough to avoid the algorithm, so if you see this, just fill in the blank and try to look it up on your own, because I promise you, this really was what it was called: Operation: W^^back Yeah, far too many Americans are unwilling to admit how dependent the US is on China for manufacturing, so you can imagine how many more are even more so over the dependency on Mexico.

so why china bothers to collab with cartels to ship fentanyl as that doesnt seem good traditional drug business... hoarding all manufacturing supply chains to china is enough of chokepoint if one needs to stop production of some goods.

I don't think it's economically viable to move production back home, it would put up prices and reduce our markets. Better to have allies and strategically share capabilities, which I believe we're already doing.

Not really much of an issue all things considering Mexico is unbelievably vulnerable to an American blockade of the only viable port in all of the country: Veracruz. Add to the fact that it is the only nearby trading partner of appreciable size for Mexico and that the US has three times its population and it's really not in Mexico's interest to be anything other than neutral to friendly with the US. It _is_ possible to create trouble for the US using Mexico...but it will never be for long, it will end *very* badly for Mexico, and everyone involved knows this.

I’m not sure that the risk is Mexico outright going to war with the U.S. or anything like that. It’s just that if Mexico decided to deprioritize certain manufacturing, there’s not much we could do about that without making the international situation much, much worse. What we really need is sufficient domestic capability for at least military needs - and we have the population and the resources to do it.

@@PaulJWarburg I'm living in Mexico and what is happening is a lot of Chinese companies are nearshoring in Mexico now due to sanctions so they can manufacture here then sel to America. The world Needs America, it's the largest population of people wanting products and willing to pay the top currency in the world for those products.

Ya....so he addressed that in the first video, he really likes Zeihan's format and he was looking for a way to get out and get more exercise as well so doing his spur of the moment talks and it made sense to do Zeihan style. His long form content on the Icarus project doesn't give him the ability to talk about stuff as it hap.ens in real time or have off the cuff conversations like this one. Ziehan doesn't own have the walking conversation, I have been following channels that do that format loong before Zeihan came around.
@PaulJWarburg

Thanks! As others have said, no one owns a format. I respect what Zeihan does, and was candid that I was inspired by him, but yet I will never be a copy of him. We are different people, with different backgrounds, different personalities, different talking styles, different opinions, who have done different research, usually covering very different topics. Copying Zeihan would look like ripping off his topics with the exact same opinions and reproducing them wholesale.
