Given that mom's text "don't do it" was sent _after she heard about the school shooting_ - hence too late for him to "not" do it - I rather suspect that what she may actually have been concerned about was that he would finale by taking his own life, as most of these cowards do. As for the father's contacting the police about the "missing" gun, as the kid had had the gun all day _including when the parents were at the school_ the dad clearly wasn't concerned about the whereabouts of the gun - which, let's remember, he bought expressly for his son - and so I believe his call was also just to cover his own back.

It's sickening how the mother instead of being worried about the well being of her child in an active shooter situation like all of the other parents were, the first thing that comes to her mind is that her son is the shooter and texts him not to do it. Buying a gun for him when you know your son is sick in the head is the reason the parents are being charged, as they should.

@@dougrhaminar1649 That's an interesting take. He was 15, most places that aren't farms won't hire people that age because of labor laws. 16 is kind of the low end of being able to work a W-2 job. I used to mow and pull weeds for extra pocket money, but I didn't get a wage-paying job until I was 16. I'm not sure that palming your kid off to an occupation is a substitute for being a parent. Do you actually have children, or are you just someone whose parents didn't want to actually parent? I say this because I have one grown child who's a mechanic and one in high school, and my younger child needs more time due to certain factors than my older son with contact with us, help with stuff, and most non-sociopathic people I know aren't just looking for ways to hasten their child's descent into low-wage employment at the expense of sleep, education, and other things. To me (granted I'm not an attorney) it seems highly suspect that the mother automatically suspected Ethan of being the shooter when she heard there was a shooting. "Ethan, don't do it." That's a statement, it isn't even a question like "Ethan are you okay?" or even something like "Ethan, please tell me that's not you. Please call me now!" or something. It pretty firmly says the parents AUTOMATICALLY *assumed* the shooter they'd just heard about was their son. That just does not look good, IMO. They *knew* their son was capable of this, full stop. And in fact, as we all know, that very morning they'd seen the drawings and the dire words. I don't know how anyone could say these parents shouldn't be held accountable. Obviously, they very clearly knew their son was capable of a mass shooting (none of this started that morning with a drawing...this kind of thing builds, it doesn't appear out of nowhere) and what did they do in response to this? Gave him a gun, then laughed about him buying more ammo and told him to learn not to get caught at things. I can't believe there is anyone out there who thinks the parents shouldn't be on trial.

Schools and their staff are among the lowest paid and we want them to be therapists, police, counselors, all while paying for their supplies out of pocket. Did school or any of their staff purchased the gun, left the gun unlocked in a drawer, and they didn't tell the shooter to "Not to get caught" 🙄 People want to cry that the school didn't check his backpack, yet the parents were right there and didn't check it as well. And just as an example if they had checked his backpack and didn't find anything, people would be crying that they violated his rights. This is why we can't get good qualified school staff. I appreciate, and fully agree. Then there's the legal: Everyone seems unaware that there is the legal fact that students, though under-age, are still citizens of USA. As such, they have all the same basic legal rights as adults. So as to the question: Can the school be sued, either criminally *or* in civil court? If I were a lawyer, I would feel highly embarrassed if I lost either case. If a police officer pulls someone over for speeding... and he sees an artwork somewhere in the car which they think that an occupant is responsible for... or even if they notice that someone inside the car is looking up ammunition for firearms on his cellphone while the driver is being issued a speeding ticket... can they arrest? detain? Demand that the car remain after the ticket was written just to hear a 5-minute lecture? The answer is no. That would violate the citizen's rights (of course). So why should a school have such power that even a police officer, who's primary goal is safety (rather than teaching)? I am certain that saying "kids are special!" ... isn't a legal argument.

A school shooting happens, people are "shocked," they send "thoughts and prayers," argue that we need change, then change doesn't happen, and then people forget until another school shooting happens. I'm sick of this, and I'm sick of empty words being spouted by politicians. We need laws, strict laws, laws that will be heavily enforced. We also need politicians that are not just rhetoric but are actually willing to fight for the children of this country. It's not because we happen to have more criminals than other industrialized democracies, but that we are way too lenient on guns and gun ownership. Why do European countries only have a mass shooting event only in extremely rare circumstances? It's because they have extremely strict gun policies. This school shooting was not a matter of "gun safety." I'm sure that even if the parents were forced to attend a class like that they would still have been negligent and horrible parents. Also, once the parents refused to meet the school demand, the kid should've not been allowed back into the classroom, certainly not without before patting him down and searching his backpack. well, no psychiatrist is going to allow walk-ins, unless you're suggesting commitment. To me 48 hours seems reasonable given the little the school knew and even then so few doctors will take a patient that quickly (they'll say "if it's an emergency go to the emergency room"). BUT he should also have been expelled until the counseling happened. The parents are culpable for providing a firearm that was kept unsafely stored to their sixteen year old child who legally cannot concealed carry a firearm until the age of 21 per Federal law, and for failing to pull their son from class to take him to counseling to get his head sorted out. The school itself is culpable for not seizing the kid's backpack to dump the contents in front of the parents to search it for any weapons. The parents should have been told when the kid was brought into the room with them: "This is what's going to happen. We're going to bring his backpack in, dump the contents onto the floor, and search through the contents. If we find any weapons, the police will be called and the possession of a concealed weapon will become a criminal matter under state and federal law. @Peoples Republic of Ninj A genuine question, I'm not trying to attack your point, but do you have a link to what the actual laws are regarding this specific school searching his belongings? I attended middle school in a district where one school in particular had metal detectors and full-time police officers assigned to it and any student was subject to search who couldn't pass the metal detectors with out accounting for every metal object they had on them. But I understand this school exists in an area where this isn't the norm, so I have no idea how the law works in that situation.

@Rx_Bluegrass 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah and no 15 year old needs a $1000 iPhone or $200 Nike shoes but this is not about need. That has been a problem for more than 20 years now - helping kids understand the difference between *wants* and *needs*. And then here you come with a statement like this. To many parents have coddled their kids, been a friend instead of a parent, bought them anything they want and much they didn't, and never taught them how to earn anything. When kids grow up with an entitlement attitude, they *need* everything - when you hear them tell it. They _need it because Susy has it_ or they _need to do it because all the other kids are doing it_. They don't understand _WANT_ because they have never wanted for anything. It was always provided. Saying no is an important part of teaching children that they can’t have everything that they want (even if it’s affordable). Often what children really do need is not provided at all by the parents because even as adults we can get confused by wants and needs. How do we explain it to children if we don't have a good handle on it ourselves. For instance, we all need food for survival but we don't need ice cream, potato chips, soda pop, & donuts etc. While we may _want_ some or all on that list, we don't actually need any of it for survival so they must go into the "Wants" column. One thing that really helps is for ALL adults to start using the proper vocabulary, especially around children. Stop saying things like "I need to go to the golf course today" when what you should say is: "I want to go..." Don't say things like: "You need to do that properly" when what you should say is: "I want you to do that properly." Children NEED your attention. They need your love and respect. But most importantly, they NEED your guidance. You don't NEED to buy your son a handgun. But if you WANT to buy him a handgun, then you NEED to provide proper guidance and you NEED to be responsible for what happens with that gun.

Why does it feel like the mother encouraged the boy to settle scores at the end of a gun, and left him there knowing he was likely to act that day? ..whatever the case may be, the prosecutor seems to be holding back on some kind of evidence/info about the parents that appear to point in that general direction, imo.

There are a few reasons. To me, a huge blinking light is that immediately upon hearing there was a shooting at the school and not knowing who the shooter was, the mother texted "Ethan, don't do it." She AUTOMATICALLY ASSUMED her son was the shooter. Without even having checked to find out yet that the gun was missing. What does that say? To me it says she 100% knew her son was capable of an act that murderous...and in response she bought him a gun and later texted him laughing comments about learning to do bad things and not get caught.

@@Juliet_Capulet Exactly right! I also heard one of the officer say that there had been problems at the school between their son and others the previous month during one of the press conference. My gut tells me she encouraged him to deal w his problems at school-assuming he had significant ones-with violence. ..leaving him there knowing how he felt, then going on the run after the boy has been arraigned AND the prosecutor s stance on the whole thing?! Red flags everywhere!!

@@MartiStLys Oh man. This just gets sadder and sicker. I know everyone wants to hate this child but I think about what kind of household he may have been living in, all the evidence of the parents not caring, the way they abandoned him after they saw him write "help me" and then abandoned him again to the wolves (so to speak) while they ran off to save their own skins inside a warehouse...I just can't imagine how bad things may have been for this kid nor how helpless he felt by this point. Combine this with being taught violence, being handed a gun, and being taught to do bad things and not get caught...then dealing with "bad thoughts" he couldn't stop...and now...tragedy for everyone. For a huge amount of people, entire families of those dead children, for Ethan himself...for everyone but the parents who just want to save their own *sses and watch their kid go to prison.
