Definitely agree that passion is important for MC documentaries. Back when I used to dabble in them, the videos with the most passion had the most consistent long-term growth (I.e. Rise & Fall of MC Monday & SMP Earth). Meanwhile, I found it really difficult to get any growth on the more cookie cutter-type vids (like my doc about Hypixel Sports). The character of the MC documentary community has definitely changed from what it used to be in 2019 and 2020. In some ways, I like that the community is more documented than ever, but I also don’t like the backstabbing or the same videos are made 548 times over. At least there are still some pretty high-quality creators around like you and SkyBoi.

I feel that KZbin documentaries, but more for criticism and reviews for media, have leaned into describing a topic as inherent. Instead of a KZbinr describing a show or movie as something they *personally* thought was bad, they word their video to describe said media as being *objectively* bad. These videos I feel don’t allow people to come to their own conclusions about topics but rather decide it for them, as a video describing something as “objective” is more eye catching than one’s own individual opinion.

I ran a successful drama channel in another niche of gaming content about 6 years ago. The community I grew craved "ragebait" content praying on others' downfall, and I found myself straying further and further from actual journalistic integrity and instead simply chasing the next story in order to keep my channel alive. The minute somebody turned the heat back around on me, my audience turned on me because they were never watching for my personality, only for their drama fix. And because I'd made so many enemies in the creator community from my videos exposing them, nobody was going to help me pick up the pieces of my channel. I ended up leaving the community with zero marketable skills - none of my videos had skillful storytelling or complex editing, just drama. Drama content is a ticket to a quick few thousand bucks, but it's never going to be able to build these people a career or skills that will help them go forward in life.

This isn't really a Minecraft thing, the internet is basically just drama these days, I started to notice with the Yandere Dev thing, everyone made a video on every single slight development, Yandere dev could've taken a piss and they'd make a video on it, drama content is just so incredibly lazy most of the time and serves just to make an endless circle of hate, it's dumb.

Very interesting video, I've actually thought about some of this stuff a lot, so long comment inbound. First of all, I think the main reason you see so many of these newer drama/commentary minecraft videos/channels, is because that is the easiest way to grow in a rather saturated niche. Let me explain. Back in early 2020 when I first started doing minecraft video essays/history videos, there were 3 other notable people in the space - AntVenom, FitMC and SalC1. Fit and Sal primarily focussed on 2b2t, and AntVenom tended to explore a lot of the intracacies of the game (his "breaking minecraft" series for example). And what I accidentally realised/stumbled upon, was that outside of 2b2t and some of Ant's history videos, nobody was talking about a large side of the game, that being its multiplayer, servers and history. So I began making videos about minecraft server history, virtually just based on my time spent playing the game back then, I didn't even need to do much research. And because there was nobody making these videos, people just found my channel naturally when a unqiue video I made piqued their interest, or through google/youtube searches (thats how my first mineplex vid blew up believe it or not). This continued in 2020 and even 2021 with minecraft history. For example in late 2020, I had begun making a lot of "the evolution" type minecraft videos, and while sitting in a discord playing minecraft with a friend, he casually and jokingly suggested while we were mining, that I "should make a video about the evolution of mining". And I thought to myself, hey thats a good idea. I checked and nobody had done it, the video was simple and straightforward to make, and 1 week later it was done and uploaded. It got over 1 million views in 1 month. Those kind of "topics" just don't really come up anymore. My point with all this, is that back then there was still a lot of topics and unexplored ideas left, that mean't that anybody making videos, could fill that gap in the niche and have a reasonable chance at growing through that alone. But now, because the niche has become so much more saturated, a large portion of those video topics and ideas have been done to death and are no longer unique. This means for channels making minecraft video essays or videos in a similar format that want to grow, they have to find a new way to stand out. And whats the best way to do that when you don't have an audience yet? Use someone elses name recognition. This happens in the normal commentary space all the time, its much easier to grow and stand out when you can use someone elses name or some sort of recent trending drama to stand out, and thats because people wont be clicking on the video because you yourself convinced them with an interesting/unique topic they might not know about (how the minecraft video essay scene was in 2020/21), but instead people are clicking because they know and are interested in the youtubers or people you are talking about. Now I don't really blame them for doing so, at the end of the day they want to grow on youtube and that is one of the best ways to grow on youtube. The issue begins when lots of people start doing the exact same thing. When that happens, these channels need to continue standing out amongst the crowd of people doing identical to them, so they begin over-dramatizing/sensationalising their videos, or looking for any slither of the situation that makes their video "unique" from the others. This is where people begin making serious reaches in their videos, or finding the smallest and stupidest of things to continue fueling the drama (like blissolics mentioned in his coment below, where people dig up 3 year old drama that really is irrelevant now). I do have empathy for these channels, because I know how much harder it is to grow in this niche now, I mean even I myself over-sensationalise and dramatize videos from time to time, but the issue becomes when the people on the receiving end of these videos, aren't gigantic companies like microsoft, but are other youtubers/creators. If 10 channels made a video about why microsoft is greedy and ruining minecraft, then sure while the content is repetitive and also somewhat done to death, nobody is really harmed. But when 10 channels make a video about some specific youtuber, drama or person, and continue to escalate the situation to stand out from each other, thats where actual harm can come to the individuals involved, and uncessary additional drama is created. At the end of the day though, as long as their is a demand, and people recognise that this is a way to grow their channel, nobody is going to stop, and new channels will keep popping up doing the same thing. My channel blew up not long after SunnyV2's, and I used to watch his videos a lot in 2020 and 2021. And you know what happened? In 2021, he had a small period of time where his videos weren't really drama/downfall related, moreso just nostalgia/informative related (he made a video about why minecraft was so nostalgic around this time as well). And a lot of those videos performed pretty bad, compared to his traditional rise and fall/downfall videos. Sometime later that same year, he "switched" to the more dramatised and negative content he does now and has continued to do so since. And it has been mega-successful. You know what this shows us? Sunnys more positive/upbeat or even neutral videos didnt perform as well. And thats because people love drama. They dont want to see happy upbeat/nostalgia driven stories, as much as they want to see downfalls and drama about some popular youtuber or person. The reason so much of the minecraft commentary content is like a "watered down sunnyv2" is for the same reason. Drama sells, its what people want. Oh and just to clarify 1 thing. It definitely is still possible to grow the way channels like mine did in 2020/21 (as evidenced by your own channel, and many of the other high quality channels doing similar), and there certainly still are unique ideas and topics out there. But is has become so, so much harder now. Great video though, I pretty much agree with the entire thing!

I got into commentary/documentary style videos back in late 2020. All I covered was basically just drama, and I saw some success from it. But I dropped it. Because I felt like I was banking off other's downfalls and I felt like I was developing a community based on obsession over drama. It was like you said, "cashing out on short term success." Now I just do what I enjoy. I play Minecraft survival and I occasionally make videos on advice or sometimes just a topic I'm very interested in. I am so glad I stopped making those videos when I did. I can't imagine having developed a community that is only watching my videos because of the newest twitter drama.

I think there's a very visible line that splits between a documentary video and a tea spill or 2016 commentary video with the latter being mostly the negative stuff. Documentaries are usually okay and at best pretty good on their own recapping what has happened surrounding a topic and i don't really call them "expose" videos if the problem at hand threads into the realm of criminality and already has been building up for a while. However tea channels on the other hand just scrapes whatever petty tweets out there to blow it up into something seemingly much larger than what they are, petty and unimportant stuff.

Very well said actually. I agree this form of content that you do is perfect. Gets the point out, while having extensive research and being unbiased. It’s something you’re truly passionate about and I respect it. No “exposing.” I've noticed that some creators, like Blissolic, have previously leaned towards drama content for views, with him even saying that "hate sells." However, I am hopeful and have started to see a positive shift not just in his content style but everyone elses. More content creators are shifting to the value of producing meaningful, well-researched material rather than chasing view-hungry rage bait. While drama might entertain some, it doesn't contribute to the community at all. I'm glad to see this change and believe it will lead to a better content creation platform.

This is a growing trend that has been infesting all aspects of online discourse for a while now when it comes to entertainment, media and fandom culture. People aren't really able to talk about liking or disliking things anymore. What they like has to he some objective morally correct truth, and people with different opinions must, as a result, be objectively wrong and immoral. And because the opponent has been declared immoral, the person then justifies to themselves treating that person terribly. I've seen it a lot in fandom spaces where people would be cyberbullied for having the "wrong" favorite character, the "wrong" art style when doing fanart, the "wrong" headcanons... People seem to have a lot of trouble seeing nuance or understanding that you can be neutral on things too. It's always you either love it or you hate it. Us vs them.

Definitely agree with what you are saying. The frustrating thing about being a content creator who occasionally makes drama related content is that is that first of all, drama that actually can be made into good content doesn't happen often, and second, when you make content you ACTUALLY ENJOY, for example my "How Hypixel Can be Saved" video, it is very frustrating when the video doesn't do well at all, and only makes you more desperate for views, forcing you to turn to drastic measures in an attempt to get back on track with gaining views. It's a vicious cycle and I am a victim of it.

I think this also goes for the Minecraft Community as well. In recent years since the Wild Update came out, the Minecraft Community has been getting more and more toxic and negative on every front when it comes down to Minecraft. I recently watched a video called, "We need to talk about the Minecraft Community", made by RetroGamingNow. A Minecraft KZbinr that's been known for making Minecraft Videos. And in this video, he goes over the history on why the Minecraft Community has been so negative in recent years from Caves and Cliffs to wherever we are today. And how people within the community consistently make this toxic culture of anger and negativity + frustration towards other people in the community and at Mojang, the developers of Minecraft. And how that same culture of Toxicity and negativity can lead into a rolling snow ball of a domino effect. Where people create more Toxicity and negativity within this community. Due to Echo Chambers on social media and many other factors involved. I recommend RetroGamingNow's video on this subject. It's not just Minecraft KZbin, it everywhere in this community. Because we created this this mess. And now it's our jobs to dictate where this community goes. Are we going to create a more negative future, or a positive future? That's up to you to decide. Choose wisely my friend...

Generally speaking, this is just how media works, more dramatize things are more interesting to people than just standard things. I agree and understand with everything you're saying! I personally don't like how Cheetah sounded when he talked about this topic, because it shows lack of understanding and care for the creators who actually do make great documentaries or topic videos. It's a little funny because he made that video achieving the same result with the emotions targeted towards the genre instead of a specific creator. Personally I think content is content and I think everyone has the right to try and express themselves how they want! I do agree that some videos are just for views and to make money, people do this everywhere from youtube to the news. But random drama to harass people is obviously not something I support. But outside of just harassment, Are we trying to just deny what someone wants to do because another person doesn't like it? I hate that mentality it's almost like people are saying you don't belong here. Regardless I love the work you do man. this reminds me of newspapers and journalist articles becoming inaccurate because they're rushed out and often distorting facts simply to shape a clear, dramatic narrative for attention, gains and quotas, which has been going on for....quite the time. I feel like modern "exposal" videos on the internet (and documentaries in general) have similar issues that overlap here, just goes to show how deep rooted of an issue it is

Sorry for writing this comment but I really want to say that I understand that audience retention isn't easy and that doing a lot of flickering and animations helps to raise it but at this point the amount of flickering, filters and effects is really becoming annoying to me. Hey Caleb! I dont know if you remember but a couple months back in 2022 or 2023 (i dont remember) you watched a small youtubers video. It was a Hypixel Bedwars video and you even commented on it. I was the owner of it. Since then I have deleted it and started fresh. Because you commented on that video, I was inspired and decided that youtube is something I love and I will never forget what you did. So thank you. (The channel name was “ThatGuyGamez”)

jetstarfish's videos i feel like are the better type of minecraft documentarys because he doesnt put others down, or often cover drama, he puts in months of work in and he puts in a ton of effort into those. i don't think he is the same as others you show in the video myself. or even nearly the same as yourself, you 2 are far opposites. you post often, you post cinematic, you post serious. he posts scarcely, he posts more lighthearted content, and its usually for humorous stuff. this is based on your inclusion of him at the start, with no "hey I don't think they are bad for this they just fall into a category of similar content"

drama is the scurge of any community and commontary has the unique ability to directly leech from it without being directly involved. i've never heard of a commontary community where people weren't always looking over their backs for the day the pendulem swings their way and the people who left before that'd happen would still be affected by how fake and paranoid their "friends" were. just a feeling of everyone is out for themselves. honestly it's just sad seeing so many video essay niches devolving into the same thing, speedrunner histories spend more and more time talking about upsets, game analysis switching to encompass the community of the game to criticise certain members, and let's not even talk about the cess pit which is political commontators who became the face of the "culture war" sad thing is we are just hard wired to enjoy gossip, we have all been told negative stories about coworkers or talked privately with close friends about mutuals you find annoying, it's just kinda impossible to avoid getting some enjoyment from it, but even with that inherent bias for that negativity, every drama video being an hour plus is just... boring, often people run out of things to say and start making up shit leading to the original targets refuting the laundry list so they can avoid acknowledging the actual bad shit, like when you start seeing exposed thumbnails with the word "gooner" it is really hard to not immediately write it off as spam. do honestly miss the times i could watch an essay about a game someones passionate about and enjoy someone go into much deeper detail than the average review would. that level of passion just isn't there in the copycats like there was for the millions of letsplayers who at least chose to make their content farms on top of playing games they personally enjoy.
