NBA has a cap of 101 Mil but it is only a soft cap meaning teams can go over the cap but will just have to pay a luxury tax. NFL has a hard cap of 177 mil meaning that teams cannot go over that cap no matter what and MLB has no cap only a luxury tax of 200 mil. This is why MLB players get paid the most.

They glossed over the arbitration system in Major League Baseball. A player can reach arbitration after three years and start receiving single season guaranteed contracts almost equal to that of veterans if their numbers are good enough. Tim Lincecum jumped pretty quickly from the league minimum to $22 million per season before being eligible for free agency. Josh Donaldson went from the league minimum, lost his arbitration case and made about $4 million in his MVP season before jumping up to $17 then $23 million a season before reaching free agency. Total revenues for all north American major league sports have ballooned over the decades. Sure baseball is third, but that's third out of five major league sports leagues which have each grown in TV viewership, number of teams and the total amount of games played in a season. Baseball also pays pretty big signing bonuses to prospects before they make it to the majors. That guy grinding it out in the minors might already have been paid a $1.5 million dollar signing bonus before ever making it to a big league spring training camp. The NFL relies on the U.S. college athletics system to churn out players. Basketball relies on college players and lesser leagues in Europe. Baseball use to get cheap players from Latin America, but now pays many of these players a premium. You can't steal talent from Japan anymore either. You have to pay a huge fee to buy a player's rights then negotiate a contract with the player.

Generally if you played baseball growing up, you tend to like the sport. Baseball and football are neck in neck as my favorite sports. I can sit and watch a baseball game from beginning to the end. It’s certainly a harder sport to make it to the big leagues. You got rookie ball, A, Double AA and Triple AAA, than finally the big leagues, after all that they should make the most money. Basketball players do pretty good, The NHL contracts lately have looked better, I hate NFL contracts, the player has very little leverage. Given the short career, I’d likely advise a player to hoard most of their money and live like a regular person, short of being a quarterback or kicker, your career will likely be 10 years or less.

In a nutshell: Long term TV deals + the strongest union in America are causing these huge salaries despite the sport slowing in popularity relative to NFL and NBA. One thing not considered in the video is why these TV deals are bringing the big bucks. Main reason is that sports broadcasting is the only thing that cannot be commoditized by streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon and Hulu and thus is the only source of revenue that big TV networks can rely on going forward. We shall see in the next couple of years if this trend continues.

Pace of play initiatives are well intentioned and can help. However, unless the league lets players show off some personality and character in the field, it will still be boring. Too many unwritten rules and restrictions in the MLB, this stifles the creativity and personalities of its players. Yasiel Puig almost always gets in trouble with his bat flips, but they should look at how much buzz it generated for the game.

I myself would personally argue that the NBA has the best contract. If you're talking to which league makes the most money out of contracts, it's the MLB, however, I would argue that you see these insane MLB contract like Mike Trout, 430 mil for TWELVE YEARS, where in the NBA, the best players make James Harden 228 mill for 4 years(half of what the MLB makes at a quarters length) or Steph Curry 201 million for 5 years, is a quarter or half of an MLB contract length with nearly half or more than a half of MLB best players contract, that's with a SOFT CAP in the NBA. If you want the MLB, NBA, and NFL to play on an EVEN FIELD with no contracts, the NFL will win this game, HOWEVER, the one thing about the NFL is that there's a max of 1696 players in the league as opposed to the NBA who can have a max of 450 players only(53 players per NFL roster while 15 per NBA roster) which the money does not get evenly distributed, that works against the NFL having the biggest contract but we know players do not get paid evenly and a quarterback makes the most which it should be. so to break it down TLDR - MLB, however, they get these 300/400 mill contract for a length of 10-12 years while the NBA at most can go up to 6 years with best players earning 200-300, Lebron could have broken this record. Half or a quarter of the MLB length in contract with half the earning, NBA wins. That's with a cap in the NBA and NFL, imagine if the NBA and NFL had no cap, NFL wins, however, it's unfair the NFL has to distribute to 1696 players unevenly as it should be while in the NBA, the distribution is 450 unevenly distributed. Lebron could gotten that 350 mil for 4-6 years had it not been the NBA easing into the TV money, and not with the Lakers either, he'd have to stay with the Cavs. 350 for 4-6 years? almost Mike Trout money with a quarter of mike trout contract length.

Likewise, millions of basketball fans watch college ball almost exclusively. The single greatest competition in American basketball, at least in terms of widespread excitement, is March Madness, not the NBA playoffs.

@Moist Gnome no, not really. Even if a player played in every major T20 league, they'd still come out to less than 100 games. They would have to play either 12 Test matches, or 30 ODIs and T20Is each to reach about 160, but it's unlikely that a player playing a full slate of international matches would also be available for full seasons of the IPL, Big Bash, etc. Domestic cricketers also do not reach such numbers. An English county cricketer who played all 16 of his team's matches in the County Championship gets at most 64 days of cricket, plus maybe another 25-30 days of limited overs cricket (assuming they are selected for all formats).

One quick thing you got wrong. You said that baseball rosters have half the amount of players as NFL teams, but this is not true. You are correct if you talk about the 25 man roster or the 40 man active roster but the organization actually has upwards of 100-150 players not to mention dozens of coaches. This is because baseball organizations have 4 teams each. That being said 99% of these players make less than 500k and not just that players not on the 40 man roster can make as little as 25k a year so they make dirt.

The NHL, is the lowest paying of all pro sports (with exception of North American MLS), but the bargaining agreement, INSURES all player contracts are guaranteed. If a player is injured, he is paid. If he is sick, paid. If he goes to rehab, paid. etc. etc. This is a way for it to even itself out, in some ways, to MLB, NBA, NFL, albeit the contract money in those sports is sick.

Attendance would rise if they made it easier for people to get concessions. MLB if you're listening, make an app that you can scam your ticket so it knows your seat so you can order from your phone and then they bring it back to you having charged your credit card.

Now I am surprised this video doesn't mention the NHL at all. As I just looked it up the NHL salary cap for 2019 is only $83 million. And the luxury tax threshold for this season in MLB is $209 million. Now you know why MLB players get paid way more than any other pro sports athletes.

@manchesterunitedno7

Like the narrator said. MLB relied more on stats to sell the game, not the face of the player. Unlike NBA, which is star-driven sport, and the star has more global selling. Sure, there was an exception (Derek Jeter for example).

This is true for the top 20% but much different story for the bottom 80%, 40% make the league minimum and the medium salary is fourth of the four major sports, below average players will not make it past the rookie deal, average players only stay in the league if they play for a little above minimum because most teams can not afford to contend(they do not think these guys will make a difference in wines or sales) above average players will make more contending teams like to fill out there roster with these guys but unless you are one of the top 150 players on earth you will not get the big money. Truth is a player who make's the MLB is more likely to have a career less then three years then to get the big money

Baseball losing popularity is not the sport, it’s everything around the sport. It more has to do with the media. Go on ESPN, they might show 5 minutes of highlights before they go talk about stuff like Antonio Brown quitting from the NFL. Also, the ball is rarely in play. A lot of people say baseball is a dying sport, but the MiLB hit an all time high in attendance by more than 1 million fans so the sport isn’t dying. Also, baseball still has 26M youth baseball players which is the same amount as youth basketball players

I have two great ideas to make baseball entertaining. (I don't watch baseball) 1. Make bases a big bigger so we can see more attempts at stolen bases. 2. Make the run? lane bigger when they are going to a base or stealing it gives them a chance to juke the baseman. It would be entertaining to see someone get juked

Baseball moments are far from each other..

Why I SMH on these Collage FB and BB players going this Pro Sport. MLB Players with speed and talent are dream picks for any MLB Team.. And for Pitchers, if you have a Arm and knows how to throw a pitch with speed and control you have time to grow in the minor leagues where you build your talent and get noticed for the MLB Draft and three years in the Big Leagues you get that Guaranteed Pro MLB Contact and Paid. Not Suspect with the NFL who hardly pays that contract. MLB needs players who could Steal Bases and Hit. They need Speed in the outfield to catch fly balls hit..
