Good point but here's the big thing that people always gloss over: Even back in the 90s, these Japanese sports cars didn't sell too well and competition from Eu and USA were always there. We only appreciate them so much because we look at them with rose-tinted glasses and the fact that they're more raw as compared to modern equivalents. One reason they've suffered in the sports car departure is they aren't offering as many sports cars as they used. There's no Celica, no S2000, no 3000GT, no Eclipse, no MR2. So there's are less enticing options for buyers. Also in addition they're not making an effort to have a splash on pop culture like they did in the past. The Supra was in every racing game in the mid 2000s pretty much and now it's only in Grand Turismo. Now pretty much European brands are doing what the Japanese did in that era.

One more thing: nostalgia factor. Except for the Miata, Japanese sports cars never really took off even back in their heyday in the 1990s and 2000s. They didn't really become popular until Gran Turismo and Fast and the Furious brought them into the mainstream. Don't get me wrong, the old NSX, Supra, and GTR are great cars, but I feel that most people think they're great bcoz they associate it with those two franchises more than the cars' actual qualities. While I love the 90s Japanese sports cars, this is the same argument of: “wHy CaN’T oThEr kIDS FrOm mY gENeRaTIon APpReciATE REAL mUSIc 😫” Tastes evolve, technology evolves, *legislation* evolves. Regulations on how to build a car, safety systems, NCAP/IIHS, emissions. Add to this that sports cars really don’t sell anymore. Developing even one from the ground up is hugely expensive and a huge risk for financial failure nowadays (its why Toyota co-developed the new Supra with BMW). Car makers are businesses too, they have to turn a profit, otherwise they kill whatever drag their sales figures down. So of course they’re never gonna be the same. Maybe if people lowered their expectations they wouldn’t be so ‘disappointed’. Just my $0.02

What’s REALLY hurting Japanese sports cars, and even cars from other markets, is the fact that they’re all lacking driver engagement... Also, government intervention. Emissions and regulations (especially safety) have become so strict in most countries that building a new car like those we loved in the 80’s and 90’s is damn near impossible... All of these Japanese sports cars we praise will someday become so extremely valuable, some of them already are... So, buy and enjoy them while you can. Cars like that will likely never return again.

The biggest disconnect of this video is the criticism of new Japanese auto manufacturers not making cars like they used to when the 86/Brz are exactly that. They are barebones and cheap and reliable but you’re critical of the fact they arent outselling mustangs and camaros? How the hell does that make any sense when the 240sx and integras of the 90s didn’t outsell their Detroit counterparts either. The 86/brz are not in a niche market. Toyota and Fuji heavy knew exactly the demographic the 86/brz would appeal to and the car fits absolutely perfect in that category and the only major criticism is the power.

The underlying reason is probably japan’s own economy, which is staggering for about 20 years. Japanese people aren’t interested in buying a sports car as much as before. And oversea sales is not enough to incentivize these manufacturers to build sports cars.
@dioarya62753 жыл бұрын
Also, some cities in Japan was already forbidded any kind of street racing activities since these old JDM sport cars are affordable by anyone (including the middle economy society) and even tuned it for street racing (I think that there is few street racing activities around Tokyo Wangan or Osaka Kanjo nowadays (-_-)). Therefore, these manufacturers decided not to create it again or turned it into supercars or crossover since only the rich guys could buy supercars and crossover was very spacious and family-friendly. Unless, if they want to keep focusing on its original principles, then they have to create it again into track cars only (like what the British did with McLaren P1 GTR). Japan also have race tracks where could be used for public racing and joy ride (like Tsukuba and Ebisu) because there will be also higher chance to get pull over by cops when taking speed attack attempt on freeways

America has a lot of straight roads because a lot of america is flat and it's a big country, that's why muscle cars exist for straight line performance and up numbers (because us americans also believe bigger is better). Japan has very few straight roads and has lots of corners because they are in a mountainous and densely urban country, they also have a road tax based on car size because of their urban populations, so japanese cars are smaller and more nimble. Since america likes going fast and straight ofc Americans judge cars based on straight line preformance. Besides, all people, not just americans, like having the faster car. Should we judge cars that way? No. Do we anyways? Yeah :/

Well there’s several factors here, 1) Japanese car makers took many people by surprise with the quality and diversity of car models they introduced in the 80’s and 90’s, whereas these days you’re very unlikely to see a car model released that you haven’t already heard everything about it. 2) other car manufacturers caught up 3) a long time in between models ie supra for example means a lot of time for people to build unrealistic expectations. 4) the car scene and it’s priorities are the not the same now as they were way back then. Car manufacturers want mass consumed vehicles which are safe and efficient 1st and cars that can be done up to look cool or drifted around a track second.

Never forget that there is several city governments in Japan also forbids any kind of street racing activities in metropolitan freeways or mountain drives (Touge). @christophersaint69265 жыл бұрын
Nah Omni it's 86-99 far superior 2k+ is a mockery especially right now. The supra is just i.e. it does it's job it just doesn't feel special it's not particularly fast or nimble compared to others it just exists and does it's job. The new NSX is all computer so there is no feedback it's typical of modern Super/Hypercars while being slower and less nimble. The 370z is 10years past it's expiration date. The BRZ/86 should have just been the Celica and people would have expected it to be slow and ok handling for the track (not hinting at trueno86 like performance by calling it the 86) The MX-5 Miata is the same as it's always been it's cute quirky and fun to drive but no self respecting "Dude" wants to be caught in one cuz it's still "a girls car". In otherdwords no change there and addingthe fiat badges just proves it. Basically what you get with all of the modern japanese sports/pony/supercars is vanilla pudding for the price of a Gordon Ramsay Tarte Tatin with a side of Golden Oppulence Sundae it's crazy. What you had in the mid to late 80s and all through the 90s were attainable cars that excited and were special. You had 4 and 6 cylinder cars that could hang with the big boys in the straights, through the corners and do it with amazing reliability and small sticker prices. I mean in 1994 you could finance a fully loaded NSX for less per month than you can an average crossover these days and only a bit more than an Impala/caprice of the day. Now the exotic brands in many cases are a better value that's messed up.

Here’s a different perspective from a japanese consumer. 1. Even here in japan, Japanese sportscars are not selling well. I think one of the reason it’s not selling well is because of practicality. Why? Because even if you buy a second hand sportscar for under 10k you will still pay premium on both taxes and insurance. Let’s say money is not a problem. Then another problem arises which is usability. Even if you have a 400-500hp monster under the hood you will still need to stay under the speed limit since 1. It’s expensive getting those tickets and 2. You will certainly lose your license if you keep piling those tickets. So generally there’s no merit in owning one.

Lucas Tekkan WRONG! How on Earth Can a torque converter shifts as fast as DCT and feel as engaged as DCT? Then put a jolt emulator? That’s hilarious... everything looks fake In this car... no doubt there’s a massive recall going on and it’s not that ground breaking.... the only way to do it in a sports car is to go manual or DCT. Anything else is fake like women with fake tits lol!

Lucas Tekkan are you aware that there’s already an ongoing recall from BMW? There’s a detailed review from EE (engineering explained) about the placement of fake vents which was obviously installed for aesthetic purposes... these pseudo airvents are comparable to ricers who put fake mufflers to make the rear appear balanced with quadruple exhaust (Just an example) See Engineering explained review. In S mode the Supra emulate jolts of shifts... this is a fake emulation. Why do you have to fake these things? This is like the shifts points in CVTs. In reference Ford learned that no matter How advanced the torque converter is, it can never beat the Ultra quick shifts of a DCT and will never be able to give that direct feel of engine power direct to the wheels bec of that torque converter. This is a Sports car, that mechanical connnection of gears to the ground is a fundamental factor for that sporty experience. If only Supra came up with DCT none of these bad reviews will continue to Show.
