Once worked for an Ivy League university and after a few years quit and went elsewhere. When I quit the employees asked me why I would leave and I disclosed I was not beiong paid a reasonable wage. They then questioned me by asking, "well what about the status." My answer was I was unable to eat status and needed to move on.

That's bc they only see the glorification of it and not the reality. People also blanket the country. Not all places in the country are at the same level of standards. Some places are hazardous to be in while other places are top of the line and brand new. You can find Hollywood hills but you can also find places that are the opposite and completely unlivable.

Money can buy you access to better healthcare. As a multi-millionaire, you can pay for an MRI out of pocket and have a specialist review it in two weeks. Without money or private insurance, you'd have to wait til your symptoms worsen enough to justify a referral, and then wait another 2-6 months to be seen. And if said specialist doesn't take you seriously, too bad. Forget about a second opinion. You'd be stuck with a chronic condition for the rest of your life. Healthcare is what money is for in the US.

I worked a soup kitchen in San Jose CA in the early 1980s the line was around the block with shell shocked Vietnam veterans who could not get help from the government. Some were on drugs to deal with the physical and psychological pain. All of them were homeless not by choice

There are many reasons why people lose control of their lives (and their finances) and this is a perfect example. There are a lot of people who struggle to work due to physical or mental health issues and some people who have had emergencies or tragedies in life that has plunged them into debt.

I agree that most Americans are spoiled and don't know how to live within their means. But I do think poverty does exist. If a person is working a full time job, and cannot afford to own a place to live, then they are poor. There are many Americans who will never be able to afford to buy a home. They are living pay check to pay check. And if they have children, it is a difficult situation to be in. In a just society, anyone who is working a full time job should at least be able to afford a small apartment. But rent prices have gone up all over the country. And inflation has caused the price of food and gas to go up almost 30% within the past few years. To be honest, I don't think that most young people can even afford to buy a new car. In just a few decades we have gone from a society where a family could afford a home on a single income, to where it now requires a two income household to afford an apartment.

You are partly right. Eating food from the trash will keep you from starving and people in the USA are doing that and it is definitely poor; not being able to afford basic housing so you live on the street or in a shelter is definitely poor and dangerous. I live down the street from a large house with maybe 10-15 Mexicans living in it. They moved in maybe 1.5 years ago and showed up in 2 white cargo/work vans, nothing else. They're clearly pooling their money to make the housing basically free because now they're driving nice trucks. What's keeping the "poor" from working together like the majority of mexicans and other immigrants in my neighborhood?

But anyone can get evicted because of loosing a job or getting sick and having no money, there are tons of those people out there too, they want a home, and edible food, they have no money to get those things, they are poor.

The reason people keep seeking status objects is because they are using status as a substitute to fill a void that can only be filled with meaning. Take for instance, working musicians, artists, sculptures or healthcare workers. They are generally willing to do pro bono work for little to no money because, they have found their purpose in life which supersedes distractions like wealth seeking, which more often than not ties in to a form of expression of who we are as a human being. There is this saying that money can ward off misery but it cannot buy one happiness. This rings true for me personally. Ultimately, honing their craft and contributing their value to the world in their own individual meaningful way is the source of their contentment and lifelong happiness. This is what will sustain them. The solution to this is for people to pick up a side hustle/job that expresses their humanity, then this status seeking game will stop of its own accord.

Not true, they’ve given up on wealth seeking because it’s too hard. Chose not to provide for the economy & instead chose to provide for the community. On top of this most of these people dream of being famous or rich, keyword ‘dream’ which is another form of escapism. Also most people chose the ‘good path/creative path’ at a young age, before you understand the world. Now those working in healthcare are pretty much babysitting people that have completely abused their bodies (which we also owe thanks to capitalism) now the healthcare worker just depressed and can’t even find the energy to save enough to cover bills to change career, when everyone around them is flexing their ‘good life, clothes holidays) the healthcare worker either 1) follows suit and spends their money for a dopamine release or 2) live for the weekend and also abuse their bodies

One thing you forgot TechLead Show, a lot of people want financial freedom so that they don’t have to work under a boss that they may not agree with. You can have a fulfilling job, but if you have a boss or a company that you don’t see eye to eye with it’s very difficult to work for them. You may have limited options unless you want to keep moving around the country to get a new boss. But if one has financial freedom, they can do what they want to do without worrying about working for a bad boss or a bad company.

You have a choice to swich from company to company until you find satisfaction, sometimes people refer to financial freedom as a status thing, because they cannot handle being told what to do (a sign of them being lower in status). If you know how to run the company better than your boss, you feel you deserve more status and cannot handle being told what to do. It is still about status. Something outside of status might be fear. Fear from not being able to buy things when needed, so you seek financial freedom out of fear rather than status. Since avoiding a boss is still a status thing.

Furthermore a nice looking watch can be worth it if it makes you feel confident, if not then it's not necessary.

I am saying people like myself, who made their wealth have a lot of difficulty to throw it on the status game. I still drive a Porsche and dress somewhat expensive, but way below the level I could. I could a ferrari or lambo. And the cars ARE indeed appealing to me, yet I "cannot" have them cause I would literally suffer if I bought them. The panamera was the toughest purchase of my life. And it is not even that expensive. So in the end, I cannot have a lambo, just like yourself. It doesn't feel so "liberating". That's the whole point. Now if YOU had the money, maybe you would throw it, cause you never created wealth yourself. I am certain my 3 year old boy wouldn't give a damn about wasting my money in the future, but I will try to educate him about it. I would say alot of the discontent comes from working jobs people hate that are really difficult with inflation robbing the ability to ever afford to own a house, and soon cars. It’s the negative trajectory that comes from inflation redistributing wealth from wage earners and giving it to people with assets. What that translates to from a psychological perspective is you will always work this job you hate and will rent your whole life so at the end you will have no equity and work till social security. I would say it’s the loss of hope that comes from this. It’s like it’s ok to suffer if that means you are building a better life, but knowing that you will suffer and slowly get farther behind. That’s what I think is at the root of the homelessness isn’t drugs it’s hopelessness.

It is a strange feeling, when you do not have money at all. I was on a trip alone in a foreign country but due to timing and other issues i didn't have access to any money, banking housing etc. even food was becoming a problem. There are several situations that a man can due to circumstances really become peniless. Even in Finland the happiness Champions of the world. There was an old man living in a government owned flat, but due to issues he could not pay his rent. They kicked him and all his things out on the street. He started to carry the things into the woods, put up a tent there (only 500 m away). He died a few months later. . . . The social services employees still get their salary. I think that there are quite a lot of poor people, who actually have problems in getting food for the day.

By this argument, it's fine to cram tons of people into a small space because hey, people can still survive that way, right? Housing obviously greatly impacts quality of life and it's not as simple as working at walmart, and status is only one of many considerations (such as location, which impacts weather, convenience, safety, education, serenity). Incidentally, housing affordability has dramatically worsened due to inflation, which is not something the establishment likes to admit.

But here’s the reality, here on earth we have everything we need. We’ve just lost control of that reality because of our participation in a system that has convinced us that our entire livelihood depends on the accessibility to the structural offerings and we can’t survive without it when in actuality we can. This is where self sustenance and community leverage comes into play. More people / families used to know how to build housing, now they are built for us. Many people felt assured by their ability (even if it was minimal) to grow a substantial amount of their food, now we run around like chickens with head cut off if the grocery shelf is empty… Sure, major discrepancy exists in “the system” but it’s largely because of what many of us have submitted our lives and beliefs to in this lifetime.

He is confusing poor with low-income and also with destitute. Destitute means that you don't have the basic needs for survival, poor just means that your wealth or income is below a certain (largely arbitrary) threshold, like making less than $20k per year, and is not necessarily related to survival. Low income is another threshold similar to poor, that is also not related to survival, but is typically greater than the poor threshold, like people making less than 75% of the median income.

Listen America is quite a hamster wheel at times when it comes to living life. Something as simple as truly owning your house and the land on it is not a thing in U.S. I’m from West Africa. The house I have, the land I have is mine! No suffocating taxes, no risk of losing my house once it’s there. Once it is built, that’s it! Absolutely no thought of foreclosure or tax liens or any nonsense like that. It’s yours. Love it. What a way to ground your life and move on with the rest of your life priorities. I love it. This video goes to show how detached from reality some of these KZbinrs and "influencers" are. Stating that nobody is starving shows a very skewed perception and an ignorance to a bigger reality. For many people poverty isn't the result of wanting pointless possessions. It's the result of wanting to feed, clothe and home their kids. If you're earning just enough to cover the cost of rent, bills, travel and food costs, all it takes is an emergency (home repairs, hospital or dental surgery, sick leave from work, for example) to put them in debt and force them into a downward spiral.

Poor is a relative standard and there is no one set definition of what "poor" means. You will always be less "poor" if you are comparing yourself to a person who lives under a different standard; which is why you should never compare them. This is like saying oranges are actually yellow because it's lighter than a blood-orange. The argument has about 5s of making a small amount of sense before you realize that it's a wildly inaccurate way to see the world. You will always be poorer than someone else, and you will always be richer than someone else. Don't compare because the only way to do it is to be so specific with who you're comparing to that you end up comparing you, to yourself because of all the people you have to filter out to get a reliably sensible comparison. Lastly, it serves no good to tell people to just be happy with their 7-9 dollar walmart job "because you're living in America." Their problem isn't that they aren't able to buy shoes, or anti-malarial drugs; they can't afford to keep food on the table while also paying for the roof over their heads. Comments like this are detached from reality and shows how little people who make that advice know of actual struggle.

This video just changed my perspective on poverty. If nobody cared about status or their ego, how bad off would a lot of people actually be? There are people who have it way worse in the economy (especially people who are homeless), but with all the modern luxuries we have today, do Millennials actually have it worse than previous generations? A lot of Millennials (including myself) are low income, but there are more safe job opportunities in the 21st century compared to previous centuries. It's become more difficult to have high value in this economy, but the internet caused a lot of stuff to lose its value. For example, digital piracy caused music to have less economic value. Money itself has lost a lot of value. Part of that has to do with government policies that accelerate inflation, but most jobs in the 2020s provide less value to society than most jobs in '90s. This problem will only get worse once automation permanently changes the economy. Most skillsets that were highly valued a decade ago might become less relevant or less useful compared to a decade from now. The value of skillsets depends on which skills are the most needed or wanted in our economy.
