I wish I would have known in my teens, my skin has a super strong reaction and I have to special order my toothpaste because of the chronic dry and irritated skin on my lips and around my mouth that I used to get. Now time to look for that cicalip repair.

LA Roche Posay Cicaplast Lip is an excellent product. Never failed to sort my very chapped, prone to cold sores lips out. It's very close to a medical balm!
@Aussiegirl19727 жыл бұрын
twiggy love When I tell my friends that mint, peppermint, lemon, etc.. is bad for the skin and the lips and hair too they look at me with disbelief. During the daytime I always put on a lip balm that has an spf of 30 plus underneath my lipstick or lipgloss to protect my lips from the sun. Our lips tend to get thinner/finer with age but the sun has a lot to do with it to so I always make sure my lip balms contain an spf of 30 plus during the daytime.

Camphor is an ingredient that people think is healing but is super drying!
@NymphetaminexXxGrrrl6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't put it anywhere near the lips or mouth (or broken skin) but camphor does have its medicinal qualities in topical application for pain (any heating or cooling, counter irritants) and as an inhalant (vicks vapo rub) It's amazing how many essential oils (which most people don't take seriously) are used in mainstream products, and the very people that scoff at essential oils are unknowingly using them, and reaping their benefits.

I used to have lips that were so bad they would crack and bleed when I'd smile. I've had lips like this since I was a kid and have run the gamut of mentholated and minty products ever since. Lipstick would completely dry out my lips, and so I've never worn any as it was never worth the week or so of intense discomfort after. When I discovered your channel back in November, I ordered HA and Buffet from The Ordinary and patted them on my lips along with the rest of my face. I stopped using the balms because my lips felt better immediately. Within days, my lips healed, and they have been so healthy ever since. Even through a dire Canadian winter! Thank you so much for providing such high quality information - it's so nice to smile without looking like a horror film. I can even wear lipstick!

I'm sure La roche posay lip balm is great for most people, but I must say, there are exceptions. I’ve tested it alone multiple times and every single time it makes my lips cracked, flaky and painful. Obviously there is an allergic reaction. I’ve tested many many lip balms and compared the ingredients. From that I’ve discovered petrolatum is my best friend, and most “natural” ingredients irritate my lips such as lanolin and beeswax, surprisingly, and of course fragrant essential oils (vanillin, limonene, peppermint etc). Eucerin aquaphor works for me. It seals my lips and does no harm. As for lipsticks, I've also tried many, from the department store brands to the "eco-friendly" sector, and the only one so far that will do no harm is Burberry Kisses lipstick 💄

Hurraw is really awesome if you want a raw, vegan, and organic option. Otherwise would definitely recommend the LRP Cicaplast Levres. I use both. Caveat: If you're reacting badly to it, you're reacting badly to it. Everyone's skin is different so best to try something else. I would also recommend trying a SLS free toothpaste (and shampoo/conditioner), as personally, I found that my lips stopped being so dry and constantly flaking when I did (I switched back to a toothpaste that had SLS when I ran out, and it was fine for awhile, however, after awhile, the flakiness came back. Ended up switching back to SLS free. For reference, the brand is Sensodyne.)

I agree with you completely and I would agree that not only are most lip balms contain irritants, but most skin products in general are formulated with terrible ingredients. And then people get in a cycle of trying new products because their skin is upset. I also agree that petrolatum is 100% fine for the skin and is one of the least irritating products available!

I suffer from mild excema and have needed lip balms since my teens. Until recently I was unable to wear lipstick because it irritated my lips so much but the new moisturising formulas like Mac Creemsheen now allow me to wear some lip colour. After a lot of experimentation with balms I found the Body Shop Vitamin E lip balm best at giving long-lasting protection. It's quite waxy but then I need that. I apply morning and night and reapply during the day after hot drinks and it has kept my lips largely trouble-free for more than a decade. I will try Cicaplast to see if that allows me to go longer without reapplication.

THANK YOU! I have never seen\heard such an honest (and truthful) opinion on lip balms. I absolutely agree with the LRP and Clinique suggestions. Also, not a very well-known trick that helps with very bad conditions, using Bepathen (salve) nightly. Actually marketed as a baby cream, it is healing and repairing for skin. Not a sexy idea to put something like that on your lips but it most definitely works miracles. Not a good idea to ingest it, so nightly use is preferred. The company has a separate lip product but I do not find is as effective.

Thankfully don't suffer much with dry lips but like you I put all my anti aging serums and creams on my lips too. I use an olive oil lip balm that I purchased on holidays last year (no spf) which is lovely. I do protect my lips with a high SPF stick in v cold or hot weather to prevent cold sores and that works for me. Nothing worse than chapped, peeling lips or cold sores but prevention is better than cure and I have learned the hard way.

Nadine, thank you! I really appreciate the work you put in to giving your subscribers/viewers such valuable skincare and product information. I use the Nivea lip butters which I enjoy but it never quite relieves the problem for any length of time, probably due to long-lasting lipsticks etc which are drying. I have just ordered the Cicaplast Lip Repair directly from the LRP website. Today (10/3/18) they are offering a discount so the full price including free delivery is £4.88 in the UK. I thought you and your viewers might like to know. And I ALWAYS hated the feeling of mint on lip balms. There is a thing called Carmex that every single person here in the desert uses during winter time. I used it once and discarded. Hate anything cooling on my skin, even worse if it tingles at the same time. In the US I use Neosporin lips for night time, Avon Beyond Color Lip Conditioner which has Hyaluronic Acid and SPF for daytime. Then I found out Nuxe Rêve de Miel lip balm, which is also a good substitute for Neosporin, but not as efficient. While I lived in the UK, I was always a bit lost, should have used E45 on my lips too.

Wow the Agave Lip Mask made my entire lip and skin around it flare up. I used it the first 5-7 times but then I just became highly allergic to it. It took a week to heal :(

I use honey mixed with almond oil once every night. It works!

I’m gong to try the la roche posay one. In the winter (in FL! Crazy, I know!) I get the worst chapped lips. I’ve been using straight lanolin and it helps but it’s messy. I’ve never found anything that works for the winter. Thank you Nadine! Loved the rant. 😊

I am a lip balm addict and have been suffering from really dry lips in the winter for the past 3-4 years. I’m heading to the store now to get a couple of your recommended products and I’ll be throwing out ALL of my lip balms since they have fragrance 🤦🏼♀️

I love Nuxe Rêve de miel lip balm in a pot (not tried the stick version). It’s matte and if you press your tongue to your lips it absorbs the moisture in seconds. Lasts ages on your lips. It has lemon in it (sorry Nadine), but it never leaves me with dry lips. Other balms do so they just get binned.

I love lanolin. I was using it for breastfeeding and put it on my lips one day in desperation. I couldn't believe how good it is! It's the only thing I use now!

I love that too

It's not unusual to moisturize your lips more than your face, though. Moisturizer on your face usually stays in place the whole day, whereas any emollient applied to our lips gets removed through eating, drinking, kissing, or just by being licked off. So I think it's feasible to reapply a lip balm throughout the day if you need it. The same thing goes for hands. When you wash them with soap, you are usually going to want to apply lotion afterwards. This does not mean your hands are in bad condition, or that your hand cream is bad.

Thank you so much for producing this video! I have constantly dry lips all year round despite using balms every night. I don't find petroleum based products (i.e. Vaseline) to be at all effective as they just provide a barrier and don't do anything to replenish the moisture. So I cannot wait to try the La Roche Posay cream that you recommended - I ordered it whilst watching the video!

The Cicaplast Baume Hands is also the best hand cream/treatment that I have ever used. Incredible and cheap.

Very helpful video. I am not certain I agreed that limonene or capsaicin are in general bad for your skin or lips in the way I understand their action, but equally I respect your opinion so will keep your warning well in mind.

I can’t live without the feeling of peppermint on my lips, I will never stop. It gives me this high for my lips, I just can’t get enough. What I do is take my Aquaphor(Aquaphor is the only product that has ever kept my lips moisturizer ll through my sleep into my morning. Not even Vaseline or mineral oil has lasted all night, even though they’re the main ingredients in Aquaphor), and I add a little of my organic Moringa oil to add extra moisture, then I add a few drops of organic peppermint oil. It’s my favorite thing ever. Burt’s bees isn’t nearly hydrating enough, plus this is a nice vegan alternative. As for those who refuse any petrolatum products, I can’t help you but my skin loves it more than anything.

Also, I own Aquaphor specifically for the lips, had a million more ingredients than regular Aquaphor, but it doesn’t work for me. It works very well as far as providing lasting moisture. But it just has that “filmy” feeling which I hate. Mineral oil or Vaseline may be considered films, but you don’t notice a filmy feeling at all.

You do you, but all you’re doing is creating a never ending cycle. I’m speaking as a former mint lip balm addict myself. You may love the feeling but that doesn’t mean it’s good for the health of your lips or surrounding skin & that will only get worse over time. There are numerous non-mint, non/petrolatum options if you do ever decide to kick the habit.

Finally someone is talking about this! If you wouldn't put peppermint menthol stuff on your face then don't put it on your lips. Good info. Thanks Nadine.

Throwing out my entire stack of lip products in 3, 2, 1..... I have been ADDICTED to lip gloss, lip balm, and lipstick for about 20 years, and I am desperate to find a cure for my cronically dry lips. Thank you, thank you for this valuable information! 🙏🏻

Paula Begoun of The Cosmetics Cop/Beautypedia has been saying this forever, but somehow the information still doesn't get out there enough. Good job talking about it.

At some point I had to buy lip balm, which I don't usually do because I don't need it that much, and I kept telling everybody that I felt like it made my lips feel worse. They looked better but it was like they were addicted to the balm and I HAD TO re apply it over and over. And I used the number one brand in France, the one everyone use. My friends and familly told me I was crazy and imagining things but it always felt wrong that they were using their balm 24/7, several times a day. I'm glad to see your explaination matches my thoughts. I'll keep in mind the LaRoche Posay product next time i'll need a balm. Thank you for this video, very instructive ! I'll be sure to share it with my relatives who still think it's the fruits of my imagination ahah

This is why I love you Nadine, scientific and factual based knowledge not just opinion! I have never understood why people love products like Carmex or Burt’s bees because the just burn and irritate! ✨

Hi nadine. ....love your posts and follow religiously. I have been using the UK produced 'Rose & Co' lip salves.....In particular the rode flavoured one,for years. I don't suffer from chapped or peeling lips, but I do like to put this on at night to make sure they don't dry out. I like to make sure I'm using products that will hydrate and plump and moisturise I purchased this mainly because the ingredients list contained lots of oils and beeswax, but after seeing this post, I read it again and the top ingredient is petrolatum. My question is, will the other ingredients be of any benefit if the product contains petrolatum? I mean, will the other ingredients even penetrative to aid lip hydration if there is petrolatum present? on case you're interested. ..The first ingredient is petrolatum, followed by sweet almond oil and then beeswax.. I've never been irritated by Amy if the ingredients, even though I sometimes slather it on, but can't see the point if the other good ingredients cannot be of any use if petrolatum isn't going to let them get into the skin. I hope you can address this as I can't seem to find any answers on the 'net'

I love Cicaplast, but that packaging... it's not easy to apply at all, or even. Biotherm also does a formulation incredibly similar to Cicaplast, Beurre de levres... its perfect twin. Love it!
