Why Movie Sonic Is Not A Good Hero - Full Episode | Sasso Studios

Hi there Sassnicks!
We originally wanted to release this as one video, but due to time constraints we had to release it as two videos. So now we have the full debate and concept in one glorious episode. We look at Movie Sonic through the lens of what makes a good hero in story telling and why he doesn't fit within "The Hero's Journey". This will lead up to another video essay on the "Sonic 2" movie. As always we want to hear your opinions. More than anything we love making videos and communicating with the Sassnick.

What I think many miss (especially in the comments here) is that game Sonic has a different arc than Movie Sonic. The game iteration of the character (and many of those in other media) has a flat arc. It is his unchanging and unbreakable good nature that inspires change in those around him. However, the intention of the Movie iteration is to show his growth into a good hero. This video points out the differences in Movie Sonic's arc, and the flaws of its execution, in the first film. I like both Sonic movies a lot. Heck, the first film got me back into the franchise after years away since Sonic X stopped airing when I was a kid. However, these movies are FAR from perfect in how they've written Sonic's journey into becoming a hero. Thanks for making this video, Sasso. You made a number of points I never considered previously.

While movie Sonic isn’t as secure or as competent as his game or SatAM counterparts, I think he’s still ok. In your analysis of the character, you skipped over the early part of the film where Tom gets threatened by Robotnik inside the home and Sonic decided to jump out and reveal himself rather than let Tom die for him. You make it sound like this version of Sonic is the most selfish and manipulative version of him, but respectfully I disagree. While he has a long way to go to being the best version of Sonic, I think movie 1 Sonic does show some heroic qualities. He clearly cares about Tom and is willing to put himself at risk to help him, even if he’s unwilling to say so or show it more directly in their low stake personal interactions.

I think you guys took this whole narrative and hero's journey thing way too seriously, and this whole critique sounds more like you guys wanting Movie Sonic to be exactly like the one from the games and not understanding why they're different in the first place. First of all, the movie is good, not perfect, but good and enjoyable. Sonic was never a hero, and that's why he doesn't know how to be one, and the only experience he has is with a cop from a little town who's just doing the right thing without getting into danger whom he's watching from afar. For most of the first part of the movie, Sonic is learning how to deal with his loneliness and following Longclaw's warning, and while he doesn't deal with it in the best way, he does it in the best way he knows and never means to be bad or do harm. And yes, Longclaw's advice wasn't the best, but that just shows she's more worried about Sonic being safe than being a hero, which is perfectly justified for someone who knows that people want the powers Sonic possess, even if this is not the right way to deal with these situations. Second, Tom is more of a hero than Sonic is, but he's not a hero like Game Sonic. He's a good guy who wants to do the right thing, but he doesn't put himself into harms way until he punches Robotnik in the face when he's threatened and when SONIC tries to help him out for that. That's why, even though he already crossed the line, he wanted to back off when he understood that Sonic was safe from Robotnik's hands and he saw the whole mess his life was going to be because of what he did. He ruined his life because he wanted to help, but that's obviously not something he wants because he has other plans and he doesn't want to waste them to be a fugitive for God knows how long. That's the thing about your critique, you guys are so bound up to your idea of how heroes should be that you forget that the writers had their own ideas, which are just as valid as yours. They clearly went to a different approach of the heroes, in this case Tom, not wanting to deal with such drastic consequences because that's what most people would do it they even cared enough to help someone like Sonic at all. Third, as I mentioned early, Game Sonic's lessons are good and are fit for a hero, sure, but they aren't good lessons for people of the real world. Take the Perfect Chaos example, the monster floaded the city and probably killed many people because he was angry, so what Sonic did was... beat the negativity out of him instead of punishing him for his crimes. That's a HORRIBLE lesson if you put it into practice on the real world. It's a nice lesson and it shows how Sonic is determined to stand for his ideals, but it just doesn't work for real people, because some people are just bad for being bad, and if they do something as cruel as killing someone, they can't just be forgiven, they need to be arrested and pay for their crimes first. The whole idealistic heroism of Sonic is a character flaw of his own, and it is shown just how bad it can be in the IDW Sonic series, mainly in the Metal Virus Saga, all because Sonic didn't destroy Eggman when he had a chance and believed he could actually be a good person, and while he had no way of knowing about Eggman's return, he still chose to give a second chance to someone who tried to wipe out every enemy of the Eggman Empire by throwing the sun on them. Movie Sonic has character flaws of his own, and he tries to improve and do the right thing in the end, like Game Sonic does, and that's what makes him inspiring, even if not as much as Game Sonic is.

Maybe you are right in some arguments but if Sonic Movie is not so close to the games, it is a different version of Sonic and it is also a version of Sonic that is learning how to be a hero literally in the 2 even Sonic himself He says he is learning. That is, Sonic Movie is more childish because, unlike the original, which is more or less mature, it is a little younger, like 14 years old, it is a rookie. And I don't understand why in your series or movie whatever Sonic vs Sonic Movie you do to see Sonic Movie be the antagonist, it would be better if it was like the Batman vs Super Man movie

I'm curious what kind of hero would you call the "Richard Dean Anderson" version of "Jack O'Neill" from"Stargate SG-1" especially since he is a self admitted cynic, and on that note how would you compare him to the 2 versions of Sonic, and if I may ask what direction will you be taking "Sasso Sonic" in terms of how heroic or cynical he will be.

(SPOLERS FOR SONIC 2....NOT THAT IT MATTERS) Thankfully most of the negatives changed in the 2. Movie and Sonic starts with his character from the 1. Film but with a twist that Sonic wants to be a hero and after Talis nearly dies from Robotnik, Sonic starts to be like his game counterpart, still pretty unexperienced but he finally does the RIGHT THING after a movie of doing things wrong HE FINALLY LERNED FROM HIS MISTAKES

Shadow and Scourge aren't anti-heroes. Shadow is a hero; they have just messed up his character. Scourge may have related himself to Sonic, but he is a straight-up villain. He conquered Mobius and beat his team and intimidated people.

It's bizzare that your chastising long claw for her decisions concerning sonic, when the movie itself acknowledges her perspective was wrong. Likewise , it makes no sense to claim tom wasn't in character when he told sonic to find san Francisco by himself, when the situation Tom currently is in wasn't anything like what he's dealt with before, so we have no basis for how he should react. You do that throughout this video. You point out flawed perspectives, and act that like it was a mistake on the films part. When said perspective was delibrate choice by the filmmakers( such as complaining about Tom's motivation to move San Francisco as selfish, when it being selfish is what he comes to relaize) . You think stories have a certain responsibility, but you also have a responsibility to accurately depict what you're talking about instead of manipulating information to suit you're perspective. You can still dislike the film, but you need to do so in a way that still allows people who haven't seen it to form a separate outlook than yours.

All I see is a 9-year old complaining about his option but doesn't really pay attention to whether it's a good movie or not, a good game or not, a good show or not.
