"Lie" is my favorite Jimin solo because of the sophisticated instrumentation, the haunting background vocals, and Jimin's one-of-a-kind, heart-wrenching voice. After watching your video, I appreciate even more the complexity of this captivating (Help, I'm trapped!) song. I can tell that teaching is your lane, Andrew. Thanks to you and lov-e-ly Jimin, I will never forget what ostinato means. (For the sake of persistence, I'll request a review of Blue Side. It's a gem, but I've seen few reactions to it).

Lie musically draws you into the story it has to tell, even before you fully understand the lyrics. It was a brilliant choice to have "Caught in a lie" sung in English. Even if you don't speak Korean, we ALL know what it feels like to be caught in a lie, and the music so perfectly conveys that feeling we understand the song even before we understand what Jimin is singing. For me, this is just a perfect song. I've listened to this song more times than I can count and it still makes me feel what I felt the first time I heard it.

LIE was my very first BTS song. It remains my favorite. It grabbed me from the moment I heard it. It was pushed to me because I watch a lot of dance videos. So, Jimin's dance performance was awe inspiring, but the song itself captivated me in ways I couldn't express. Jimin's vocals were something new to me & I couldn't stop listening to the song. The music, the lyrics, and Jimin's performance continue to draw me to this song. I listen to it at least 3-4 times a week, if not more. I cannot resist watching reaction videos of this song. I really enjoyed your breakdown of the song / music. I don't really know anything about music; I only know what I like and what I don't. I think I now know WHY I am drawn to the song, so thank you for that.

@@AndrewBergSax I was recovering from COVID when KZbin pushed the video to me; Jimin led me to BTS, as I had to know who he was, and the rest is history. Jimin is my bias, (I'm still a big fan of dance & his talent cannot be matched...to me at least), but all of the BTS members draw me in as all of them are huge talents. Not only their talent, but their humanitarianism.....wow. I cannot wait for more of you in-depth videos.

I think the word you’re looking for is SURRENDER. He surrenders to the lie and you’re right……he sounds defeated…but resigned to his fate. It’s actually a very telling song for Jimin. He hasn’t written as much as the others….but the songs he has are very very personal to him. I cannot wait for his solo album……I think everybody is waiting with baited breath because he is so damn mysterious, talented, we have no idea the direction he’s gonna take with it😳🤗😍

Oohhhhh I'm sure i will have more comments to add as i slowly process this video, so just a couple of things immediately: - Jimin explaining ostinato: perfect - the example on the piano with the original version and then staying in minor key: so nice and well done! that one tiny change makes it feel drastically different, and we wouldn't be able to experience the direct comparison otherwise. I love this type of video, deep-diving into the music of a song 😁 and this is wonderfully executed.

You gave me the vocabulary and cerebral understanding. Thank you. People will ask why I like BTS' music. Your enthusiasm for the subject matter was clear and kept me going even when my brain was like, still processing musical terminology things. But then your great editing and teaching would always catch me up! I was nodding my head agreeing with you through the video, when you were explaining how the song 'feels', and the fact that you brought in other people's reactions as 'proof' as well as the piano example, made the video so much stronger. And yes, I will now always associate ostinato with Lovely lovely lovely 😄 WELL DONE! CFA

Such a GREAT analysis of the song! Jimin really created a masterpiece. The way he managed to convey the emotions so precisely is incredible. Jimin’s voice is an instrument he uses to tell us exactly how he feels and we are totally immersed with him. True talent! I felt the same way when listening to his album FACE. He takes us on this journey with him and feel the pain along with him. Incredible!! I’m not sure you heard his album or analysed any of the songs? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on Like Crazy! Thanks again for this amazing analysis 💜

Loved, loved, loved this! The format you used to explain the structure of this song was amazing and fresh - breaking the song down perfectly. I saw Jimin perform this song live in 2017, the string musicians were on stage too and I was blown away that I was watching a Korean group made up of 7 young men who did not perform in English and yet filled an arena with beautiful music. Proving that music can bridge all cultures and languages - I left feeling inspired. Took my son (he's the musician, not me) to the concert but I became a fan in that 3 hour time span. And I have always felt that this is one of the most beautifully orchestrated songs I have ever heard, totally underrated by the general music world, you don't hear anything like this on U.S. radio and it is a shame. The song takes me on an emotional ride everytime I hear it. Thank you so much for doing this, I know it took a lot of work and I hope you enjoyed it too. I think the only minor (I think I just made the perfect pun) suggestion is that I would have liked to hear the entire song at the end. It would have given an opportunity to hear/feel it again taking in all that you had described musically. But please don't take this as a criticism. I truly enjoy your videos and appreciate all the work you put into them. This is definitely one of your best! Can you do this with House of Cards, maybe. This song is another one that I think creates an emotion that cannot be denied. But would love to hear your musical insights on any song you pick. So bottom line... don't listen to me, keep doing what you're doing, you're flippin' great!

Actually i am not a dancer, but i noticed that not only the song, and the lyric, but the dance as well. Like it is matched, when you said jimin sang in c sharp major notes, and being "desperate" and the fact that, the lyric itself said "swallow". While in the live performance you can saw that the background dancer "trying to drown him/swallow him" while jimin hands reach out for help, and the end he got "swallow" like you said. And the chorus after that felt like defeated, it is when when the dancers lift jimin up, like jimin is giving up. Sorry my bad english I wonder if u can collab with someone who can understand this dance. And knowing that, jimin lie is absolute masterpiece ever.

OH MY GOSH - I LOVE THIS - THANK YOU - THANK YOU. There were so many musical questions I had about this song that you answered. That you played both major and minor version, always wondered about that. I hope other reactors learn from you how to break this down. It was well worth the wait, as you have progressed so much in your own story telling since the first time you heard this song. To me there are so many Lies told the listener in the music, then the story. The dance that he did that went along with it showed what true contemporary dance is about, telling a story. I think many people can relate to what he talks about in this song but the music is what you make you feel the emotion. Again thank you, and yes do more. Suga's First Love (so powerful and emotional) and Jin's Abyss (solo track) - Jin wrote this song and the music and vocal are so different than one thinks of him. A much darker and desperate side to him.

Ok, so honest opinion...I actually loved this video. I was a bit skeptical when you talked about it last week, but told myself to not sell you short and to watch it...I watched it and actually remembered something that I had forgotten from a long long time ago when I was a kid (I'm 58). I used to play the flute when I was in 4th/5th grade, then I got those pesky, klunky metal mouth braces on my teeth and kept cutting my lips up, LOL, so gave up the flute. Anyway, vaguely remember learning about ostinato way back then and had forgotten about it til I watch your video. I love Jimin's "Lie" one of my favorites of his solos. Love the darkness of the song and the build up into that Major...gives me chillbumps, LOL. Thanks for the lesson and looking forward to the next Andrew Berg lesson!! Borahae!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Thanks for your detailed summary. WINGS is the first album I listened to Bangtan and Lie is the first song I engaged in and fell into the rabbit hole. Till now Lie is still in my top 5 Bangtan song list. As you said, this song is just like a movie, it brings you to the story of JIMIN's inner self struggle. When he shouts out 'Caught in a Lie', it brings out all your emotion, you are trapped and can't escape. Even though JIMIN did mention he doesn't want to perform this song anymore, this song is still a movie and art (both the song and performance) to me.

Docskim (producer) + Jimin's voice and storytelling = magic. I never get tired of this song which is why I was giddy to see this video deep dive, Andrew. My geeky side is very happy. Thank you! These is so much to love about your video, but one thing I love especially is how you included the thoughts of other reactors almost as a collaboration. It shows one, your passion and thoughtful planning and two, how this song has the ability to speak to people. Thank you for your hours of thought and hear you put into this video. I look forward to your next deep dive.

This breakdown is absolutely fantastic!! I'd heard many of these things in other reactions, but it's so satisfying and conclusive to hear them all put together like this, so thank you so much! I would love to hear a breakdown of Dionysus. I remember when you broke it down with your wife, you guys were drawing ties between the rhythms and the lyrics. Doing a more thorough breakdown including the instrumentation etc. would be really fascinating.

Hi Andrew! First off, congratulations 🎊 👏 💐 This video is great. You explained it so well I could literally hear and see it unfold in front of me. As I love to sing, my first focus always goes to the vocals and the lyrics. Since I did research the lyrics to LIE, I knew about the esnaring feeling, then the caught feeling (he literally sings that, as you've shown) and then the struggle and at last acceptance/surrender/defeat. I could clearly tell this from the lyrics. But the way you explained it, you brought the admittedly amazingly arranged music into focus and it tied into the lyrics so well, that now I can't experience them separately anymore, when I used to before. It's like... I was used to watching a work of art from afar and I could tell it's story, but know I can see all the details that tell such a full and comprehensive story that I can't see it otherwise. It's like seeing the streaks of paint on the art piece and experiencing the art at the same time. Thank you!!!! I love this video! And I'll forever equal obstinato to "lovely, lovely, lovely". Thank you to Keanna as well your performance was flawless and demonstrated Andrew's point very well! Much love! 💜 보라해요!!!

I knew it! It had to be Lie! Absolutely amazing breakdown! But the breakdown this masterpiece deserves!Thank you for doing it I am loving this! I think I already had identified what was happening harmonically and rhythmically but the way you explained also from a production perspective how it was also serving the narrative of the lyrics was really interesting and something I didn't think about beyond the "lie" part of the chorus and the switch to the parallel major! Brilliant I definitely want more of this format👏🏽

Awesome video Andrew! I love this direction of yours and I gotta say as someone who likes Lie but doesn’t fully fully get the hype behind it, I now have a newfound appreciation for this song 😍 Also, one song I’d be curious to see you break down is Interlude: Shadow. From the use of the backwards sample of an older song, to the change in tone when the shadow is talking vs him, to the repetition of the wishful thinking, and a revisiting of old lyrics, I am curious what musicians think of the construction of this song

Okay, many many views later... here we are again. 0:55 "something is kind of off" yes!!!! that always feels like something is not quite right, what is going on with these strings??? 1:16 so nice of Jimin to be your teaching assistant here 😁 1:41 For some reason, that fast-paced ostinato motive also reminds me of the sound of a moving train (maybe an old steam-lok even more than our highspeed trains nowadays, but that rhythmic repetitive never-ending... sound. And while you're on it, you're also trapped there, you can't just jump out of a moving train (and there I go and make myself think of Spring Day... great 🙃 ...) 3:00 I just love that this one has a drop into the first verse of vocals, as opposed to so many other songs we hear otherwise with their drop into the chorus. Generally, the text painting representing and evoking what's going on in the lyrics throughout, yes, yes, yes. 5:14 This rising bass line is so iconic for this song, for me too. It stands out, it's striking to hear, and because the bass line slowly rises up towards the steady-state melody, it makes me feel like i'm beeing slowly slowly squeezed in more and more (are we back with the snake metaphors again? A constricting kind?) 6:45 Yes, that Lie Major... we already talked about that one in the comments of your Lie reaction :-D I'm also always struck by the fact that he immediately brings the melody back to that exact not which would have been the minor 3rd, just two bars after that major. In a dataset i would probably be tempted to label that major there as an outlier 🤣 but here it's one of the most crucial notes to make the song. 11:05 This entire point you're making here had me completely 🤯 like wow This was a really amazing video to watch! Thank you so much Andrew, and Keanna for the beautiful piano playing! 💜 🥕 CFA

YES, I love a long Conny comment!!! So first of all, I think I'm Jimin's teaching assistant 😂 Also the metaphor you gave of the constricting snake is so perfect!! So I honestly couldn't figure out a good way to explain why he sings the minor 3rd in the chorus just a couple measures later... it's the flat 7th in that major so I think the answer as to why is because jazz 😅 It's honestly one of the few times there are chords going up to the 7th in this song so I'm just going to chalk it up to Jazz 😂 Also you have no idea how excited I was when I realized that the high note in the bridge was the root of the chord. At first it sounded like the 5th to me, but when I realized it wasn't I was so excited. Hahaha Thank you, again, for all of the kind words!! 💜
@deliaconny
@deliaconny 2 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewBergSax oohh it is a 7th then!!! Of course! (Should have looked it up in my chords chart of the song to be sure, my ears only told me it obviously was a different harmony) but yes i agree, let's say it's because of jazz 😂
