In classical rhetoric (like Socrates and Cicero) the three part repitition is called tricolon. It's used not just for emphasis but to "hook" your brain and create a memory. The human brain is conditioned to pick up on repitition but only after it recognizes it as such. Twice is weird, thrice is repitition. "Black Swan" is really good at doing this musically, both lyrically and instrumentally, but less total repitition and more of a variation on theme.

Good one, Andrew! All of the art projects that BTS were funding came out first, so the art film came out in Jan 2020, the album came out in Feb 2020, and the MV came out in March 2020, and it was a surprise that we didn't expect. I love the differences in the art film and the MV. They have totally different tones and feelings, besides the music itself. I loved the deep dive into it, I always learn so much from your lectures!

Wow. This was brilliant and I totally see how your theory fits. I don’t know if it’s what BTS was thinking when they did black swan, but I hope so because it is a beautiful theory. I was once a dancer, a musician, and a martial artist. It was all that was good in my life. When I lost them, due to medical reasons, it was, and remains, a painful death. Martha Graham’s quote has always spoken to me because of it. When I’ve listened to this song before, and it’s a tough one emotionally, I never saw beyond that top level story. Thank you for opening my eyes to what more it could be, maybe now I can enjoy this beautiful song from a different perspective without the pain. Your videos diving deep into the BTS songs are wonderful, thank you for them.

Very good points. Provided their original plan was after releasing MOS7, World Tour, then started their chapter 2. Although it turned out something else, but the more I relisten this album, the more that I felt they are preparing ARMY to accept the fact that it is time to let them move on and to try individuals' projects. Black Swan was indeed their master peice, but the whole album is still amazing which I always find something new day by day listening (especially with a good headphone.

Ah! OMG!!! Andrew, this explanation/breakdown is so unique and yet I think it is the most correct or at least it caught all the details surrounding this song and its MVs and versions. And you put all those details in a basket and voila! It makes sense! This is one of my favorite BTS songs but I have always found myself wondering why it feels so close and relatable to me, me who is neither a musician nor a dancer or any other type of artist whatsoever. Although I do understand that it can refer to passion for anything for that matter. But as it turns out, it is actually relatable to anyone. And it's not just the lyrics, it's the actual music. It's because the theme is actually referring to a person, any person... and his/her/their persona, shadow and ego. I have always thought that Black Swan mostly delves into the realm of the shadow (based on its placement/position in the album and its "dark" theme). But, oh wow! This is the missing layer I never thought I was looking for. There truly are so many levels of understanding BTS' music. It reminds me of how you and a couple of other musician reaction channels explained why Lie is such a good piece of music and how clever it is. It's like having night-vision goggles, you'll only see things if you are equipped with the tools/means to see them. Thank you for sharing that with us. From now on I'm trusting you as my night-vision goggles. Borahae! :)

Here comes a long one... This is my interpretation of the choreography of the art film. I believe the dancers in black represent the shadow of the main dancer. At first, they are controlling him, almost abusing him. Then, he begins to fight the shadow, trying to break free, but they hold him back, imprisoning him. You can almost see him thinking that, if he could just escape from the shadow, he could fly (succeed/be happy). However, once he breaks free he finds he still cannot fly. In the discordant section, I see his movements as struggling to fly and not understanding why he can't. After he goes down, he encounters the shadow once again but this time, he takes control/accepts the shadow. That's when the shadow begins following his movements. After this acceptance and control of the shadow he once again tries to fly, and the shadow actually helps him to fly. He is whole and can finally be free. There are 2 parts of the lyrics that I interpret differently. To me, Do your thang is all the people around them telling them to keep doing what has made them successful, but What's my thang is them struggling with a loss of purpose. The other lyric is Film it now. BTS is constantly surrounded by cameras. Someone is recording everything, even as they fall apart inside. It's like they're saying that they don't even have privacy in their darkest moments. Someone is always watching. "I'm dying inside, but sure, make sure you get it on film." I think this reflects their frustration with stardom, the loss of their inner selves. Anyway, thanks for reading this, if you got this far...
@smrutishikharath30252 жыл бұрын
When you said that the second "do your thang" is like a cry for help, I literally cried... I'm going through that phase right now although I'm not an artist, but I can exactly feel the meaning behind the song so much than ever before and thank you so much for posting this today I was literally thinking about this song today.... I needed this today..... The first death they're talking about is soooo painful I had no idea.....

Oh okay! I have to say i never thought more about representations of persona/ego within the song Black Swan, since i just sorted it into the shadow section of everything. But... your theory and explanation does sound rather convincing. And, it's also the first main song in the "shadow" section of the MOTS:7 album (excluding intro/interlude/outro here), thus right at the change from Persona to Shadow. anyway, thank you for giving us your insights into some more of the details going on in this song (or two different versions of this song)! 💜 🥕 CFA

I want add 1 more observation, from what we have understood from 2022 Festa, MOTS 7 in which Black Swan appears was supposed to be last phase of their chapter 1 That is SO interesting because the way I see it, this song can be interpreted as the studio version being them hitting that point as an artist where they feel lost(hence so much darkness in the mv) and them finding their path as Chapter 2(hence more light in the orchestral version) also the orchestral version ends with the protagonist flying while other dancers support them, I'm interpreting this as, though in chapter 2 BTS individual members will be taking off to fly, the other members will support one another EDIT: To add to 13:47, when the track released for the 1st time Armys were not able tell apart who is singing which part & I feel it was intentionally done to mix their voices to sound like ONE polished voice

Black Swan is on my Top 5 ever and it is the first song that my elderly dad just fell in love with. This was a great, and even, very emotional breakdown (ha pun). It is so sorrowful to imagine losing a love like that. BUT. Can you imagine having something in your life that you live and breathe and love so much that you feel your life would end if you lost it? such passion. sigh
@rafaelsmith57372 жыл бұрын
I think the transition from the line "do your thang" to "what's my thang?" Is talking about the loss of passion Feels like an artist who's very passionate to draw every single day, and days turned into years and it keeps repeating, till his passion turned dull to the point we're the artist ask "why do I draw?" As an artist the thought of that is really scary, like you already know that you will lose all your passion like how you encounter your first death It's suffocating and at the same time it's killing you slowly So when the line say "film me now, film me now" I think it means to capture every moment before the time where you'll lose your "thang"
@rafaelsmith573710 ай бұрын
BTS is like an artist that painstakingly draw masterpieces every single day, they work day and night just to make those masterpiece perfect as possible however their works barely has any attention cause people can't even begin to understand it, but never gave up cause they think one day people will start to realize how great those pieces were However, one day a disaster struck and everyone was devastated, so the artist tried to draw the simplest doodle to cheer everyone up but that doodle that he drew half heartedly with not much effort became the highlight of his career instead The simplest doodle got him so much attention and so much profit compared to the masterpieces that he painstakingly draw from the past that he doesn't know to react Cause It's like all his hardwork from before were like a joke So he felt conflicted, but then decided to draw another one, hoping it could win an award in a particular drawing competition as a gift for his fans before he has to leave but to no avail So he decided to just draw one last one in purpose to cheer everyone up Though those doodles got him easy money, he wasn't happy cause it felt like he betrayed himself and the people who liked his previous works from before

This was great. I had a thought, not so deep as you went, and that is that the timing (early 2020) was when BTS were considering how they should move forward as a group (which we didn't know at that time). They pushed off their "break" to do solo works and such until the pandemic just about ended in order to help ARMY through it, and put out more uplifting songs. However, they were struggling personally as "What's My Thang" indicates. I think in one of their lives they even mentioned that they were considering taking this "break" (Ha! Not a break really) a while ago, but couldn't. Anyway, I do think BTS was really having a hard time figuring out where to go as a group from that point forward and the song is fitting. It's a masterpiece really and was my introduction to BTS. Never looked back. I hope that all made sense.

Wow 💜💜💜it does make sense especially if BTS was preparing all of us for a change. However, the change that happened was not what they expected since English lyrics and a song blowing up(just like its name) and the catching me in its net. Yes, you are finally as crazy as all of us, and presenting your own theories with quotes, WELCOME!!! I loved your analysis and your interpretation. The nerd passion that you show in this video is awesome (I don't know if you could see the hashtag "BTSnerd" the past days!). A dancer who reacted to both videos noticed something else: in the orchestra version, the main character is finally free and flies, while in the performance that they (BTS) do, they end exactly at the same position as the beginning, and it could mean (I'm overanalyzing now the dancer's words) that doubt, that potential death (Suga sings how he is in his studio and will never fall again, but... he is still needing to work in music, and what if his heart doesn't beat anymore? Also, it ends with the "what's my thing?"). Thinking about how they were ending their chapter 1 with this disc (it was their idea before the pandemic and the cancelled tour), and how the characters in the BU are pushed to look for the Map of the Soul (and it means the individuation; in the case of BTS members, they exploring themselves as solo artists), I think that it would be really interesting to think of BTS' persona doubting about which path would follow, and their shadow... maybe... like "but I want to be an artist, not just an idol" -yes, I'm pushing you again to analyze Idol-. Well, sorry, my many words show you that you were really accurate and concise. Congratulations, and thank you very much.

To me the violins represent an ever increasing anxiety that takes over while trying to "do my thing" replacing the passion that has gone or is dwindling. I live with anxiety and low emotional affect so I deal with this all the time. When I find something that I enjoy or become curious about it is inevitable that one day maybe weeks or years later, that joy or curiosity goes away and I'm left with anxiety while doing the thing I used to enjoy doing. This may not be what they meant but it's what connected to me while listening to the song. Also I always put pressure on my self to "Do your thing" but I don't know "What's my thing , what's my thing?" because it always changes and there's long phases where there is no interest in anything. Anyway I'm new to BTS, 56 yrs old and really love this song.
