This is the first time I hear a Muslim being so at peace with South Korea. Usually they would find deep sadness and discrimination. As a protestant in Italy, things are always hard for minorities everywhere, sometimes it's tough fighting against prejudices and ignorance, so I'm with my brothers and sisters with a Muslim background. I'm glad things are changing in Korea. ❤

There is stigmatisation surrounding the hijab and Islam itself. The Media portrays Islam in a bad light and promotes horrible stereotypes. Therefore, many people believe in these stereotypes and will discriminate anyone wearing the hijab.
@Isntmycatcute
@Isntmycatcute Жыл бұрын
Because in their eyes hijab is "oppresive,"and all women are "forced" to wear . While going to work half naked is "freadom" and "personal choice" It's so funny because they say things like " howncould you wear the hijab happily knowing someone is forced to wear it" Like dog, how could YOU talk when you know some people are mute and how dare you have a happy marriage and a nice family when others have abusive husbands and shitty families Can you see the logic here? In their eyes, walking naked is freedom, while walking with a hijab is oppressive That is without mentioning that they act like we are all terrorists when catholics and Christian have committed way worse crimes and used their religion as execuse while all we did was take the blame for a small group of peoples wrongs

Also, y'all, when you come to a foreign country, please, follow its traditions, laws and social norms. If you don't like it, go to another one (just like the girl from the video did). Or it is ok to not care about country's traditions and it's citizens' fears because it's a European country? Yep as a muslim girl living in France, finding a job is difficult as your hijab will always be viewed as a problem. During interviews they can't tell you your hijab is a problem because it is descriminatory thus illegal, but they can find ways to not accept you even if you have the best CV of the lot. Your name can be problematic if it doesn't sound "white" and is too African sounding. There are just too many things that make it difficult for us and a lot of the jobs that are available to us are very limited, leaving us with a dilemma: you either take off your hijab and do your dream job or work in a call center or as a dishawasher for a restaurant and keep your hijab. I recently was interviewed for a hospitality related job and my CV was just fine for what they were looking for, but i was indirectly told my attire wasn’t fitting at some point in our discussion... I am thinking of going some place else because of these constant complications i face 😮‍💨

I wouldn't say that everyone in South Korea is very respectful of religion based on my friends' own experiences, but it's true that the majority tolerate religious expression more. Many Koreans might be passive-aggressive towards Muslim individuals due to the heavy stigmatisation surrounding religions, especially Islam. But, although they may not respect your beliefs, they will respect you as a person as mannerisms are extremely important in korean culture. So you're more likely to receive only a few ignorant, hateful words rather than full-on harassment and abuse. Ofcourse, there are curious people who will ask you many questions due to the lack of knowledge surrounding Islam. This part of the blame mainly goes towards their poor religious education system. Experiences are also largely dependent on the location. If you plan to visit South Korea as a religious individual, I recommend visiting more diverse places like Busan, Incheon, or Seoul. If you visit less diverse cities, you're more likely to experience religious and racial discrimination. *This applies to all countries.*

They said oh you're pretty etc. Si it's not a hijab problem or Islam problem, it's that they are too focused on your appearance and that most of them just know about Islam what they have heard in media. By meeting foreigners they learn by your behavior what being a muslim is. What Islam is.

@@loubgomaa5179 You must be an exception, because majority do face racism and colorism. Making fun of skintone in S. Korea is the norm there. Racism isn't neccesarily about passing harsh comments verbally. And they are very Islamophobic people.

@@Windtorment well I live in France which is really Islamophobic. Korean are not that Islamophobic but of course it exists. You always find people who are scared of you because they don't know anything about your religion or culture. But true racist or anti Islam ones, will hate you even when they know about you. I think it depends on where you used to live before going to Korea. If you only lives in a Muslim country of course it will be harder to be in a foreign non Muslim country. But if you grew up in non Muslim countries and are already used to live with different religions, ethnicities, the experience will be far different. Even more when you face racism in your country you'll be able to see the difference between someone who just fear you because they don't know about your culture and someone who has bad ideas about you and will treat you bad. Speaking as a Korean... Honestly, Koreans are very polite to each other, so they wouldn't attack or force on you, but culturally there are very lots of specific rules to follow. If you want to live in Korea, you have to follow all the cultural rules, and if you stick to them, people tend to accept you... If you don't follow them and try to force your religion on them, they have a system where you are immediately banned from society. It's not an easy country to live in. And the Muslim population in South Korea is significantly smaller than in Europe. As long as you don't have a lot of immigration like in Europe, and especially men from certain countries acting like they do in their own countries, jaywalking, street violence, harassing women, etc.

Public school are secular so you can't wear any signs or clothes that shows your religion. But you can wear them in private school ! I think the reason behind that is equality at school. Racism is a problem which cannot be abolished so in public school they ban religious signs to prevent any discrimination. Maybe some people will still be mad about it, there is some things that I don't like myself, but it's like that since 2004 for the religious signs and school are secular in France since 1882.

The second one is good, because it let's people have freedom of religion while following whatever religious rules they want to and none they don't. As a European, I've never understood why European countries are so biased to the first form. I understand banning actually harmful practices like FGM but a woman choosing to wear a hijab of her own accord is just such a clear example of something that's not an issue and would be readily accepted within the more inclusive version of secularism, and it really feels like the European inclination to exclusive secularism is just about bullying visible religious minorities. I can't think of *any* good reasons for a country to support exclusive secularism, while inclusive secularism is great. I'm an atheist and I'm 100% behind inclusive secularism. It seems logical that the best way to protect freedom from lack of religion is to protect freedom of religion too, why would I want to make anyone's life harder if it's not for a very good reason; and frankly, while I don't believe there is a God, I do believe that if there is a God, they're definitely going to be a lot happier with someone who wanted to let people worship and was happy with making friends and relationships with those worshippers than with the exclusive secularists. The only good reason to interfere with religious practice is if it's being weaponised against other people, but that's the entire point behind inclusive secularism anyway, and exclusive secularism is just weaponising atheism.

Actually it really depends on who you end up meeting. Some Koreans are very conservative but also ethnocentric in the sense that they like it when women cover themselves but they also don’t want them to be foreigners. And if you go outside Seoul, in the south especially in places like Daegu, they will be even more conservative and nationalists. But then some Koreans are like that just because they lack of knowledge in that subject and their only knowledge of islam is through medias, and we all know how medias portray islam worldwide. And then you have some Koreans who are just curious and don’t have any prejudices, they genuinely want to know more about the religion to understand it or they would learn a few greetings to greet foreigners and will go out of their way to help you if you’re lost or something. To sum up, wherever you go there will be good and bad. South Korea can seem more accepting if you meet the right people

Why is that everytime a hate comment on a video featuring a Muslim has to be from a Hindu. Like I've seen this a million times, it's norm that a Hindu has to comment some bad shit if the video has anything related to Islam. Why are you guys so insecure I just don't understand. I live in Riyadh and here people have started to think that India is the most Islamophobic country in the world and they would never visit India. Being an Indian Muslim it hurts me when I hear that because India has 20 million muslims and they generalise the whole population. I try to tell them it's not the whole country but only hindus that too who like BJP and RSS and other radical hindu outfits. I'm never wanted India to be like this, I wish things would get normal there. My family still lives in India.
