Thanks for the perspective, Chew. As always, we should remember that we're students who have to consistently learn new things while simultaneously improving at the things we already know. "White belt for life," as I call it. On that note: My Karate shihan (10th dan) was also a 10th dan in Judo, both of which he learned straight from the source in post-WW2 Okinawa. He was a wounded Marine during the battle of Okinawa, had his ear drums blown out by a nearby mortar explosion, and stuck around for more than 17 years after the war ended. Fortunately, he came back to the States years later and taught a whole generation of younger students the lessons he'd mastered in his time overseas. He exemplified the "dedication, determination, and discipline" required to be a consummate martial artist who never stops learning. He may have been a top black and red/white belt in two separate schools, but he always maintained white belt mentality. RIP Paul--it was an honor to learn from you.

Beaufiful. I just left this academy where the guys are technical and physical mat beast, one year of going balls to the walls, battling out, to this new academy where our hyper comp elite brown belt is raising us sort of, to become good at grappling. After 20 years of grappling, I still need to explore, there is so much to learn, one will never master BJJ. So this instructor is repeatly each class, tone down our intensity and have fun testing. The young guys want none of that testing, so I'm eager to see how things will unfold for his new school.

The ego is tough. When I explore new things and get caught against a lower belt, I can tell by their subtle mannerisms they are proud of themselves as if they “caught up” to me or something, not knowing I was working my C game or something new. It’s a sucky feeling despite having the head knowledge it’s better for me

I’m going through the same thing right now. I want to get really good at butterfly guard and started forcing myself in to that position. It’s only been a couple weeks and I’m getting passed constantly.

If they don't know yet they will know soon enough. And good for them to have a good feeling to take home and tell their girlfriend about, it doesn't have to be a zero sum game.

I get my ass kicked by white belts now and then. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Belts are overrated. Anyone can beat anyone with enough force and aggression. Bjj just improves your odds. Just because I know more stuff doesn't mean I'm always gonna win.

This was really good advice. I needed this as a fresh brown belt. I definitely had a game everyone knew at purple (and still have) but I think what got me to the next level was that I was definitely trying new shit around my 4th stripe and was getting smoked most of the time but that may have been what my instructor saw in me. So because of your video I will continue to lean into staying out of my comfort zone or safety blanket of what normally works for me. Thank you.

I’ve been in jujitsu for 5 years now and let me tell you, it’s hard. My instructor doesn’t hand out belts, stripes, or any kind of hand me downs. You earn Igor you don’t. I’m still a white belt and hoping that I can prove myself in a few months, but if not than it’s fine. I’m 19 btw. Sometimes I don’t even want my blue belt yet cause I want to feel 100% ready but I know I’ll never be. I sometimes wonder if it’s my ego, or skill or anything. Best of luck finding your journey guys.

This is a difficult challenge slash situation. Sticking with what works for you is instinctual. You often find yourself taking people down and subbing them with the same techniques, without even thinking about the movements. Consciously putting into practice what you've been taught that ISN'T your natural game is a challenge. BUT, no one who sticks with BJJ for long shies away from challenges. We're dumb/awesome like that. Ossa!

We have MMA guys that come and go. Some train jiu-jitsu and MMA with us and then also train at a boxing gym. If your coach doesn't want that, it's probably a red flag😂

@rolotomase1440 Жыл бұрын
@@brewhaha515 Like many people I feel like I didn't/don't deserve it. IMO belts comes with expectations that to me they add stress that's counter to my whole reason for doing BJJ. I'm near 50 and a hobbyist - I train about 3-4 days a week. BJJ to me is about going to the gym, learning something cool and being social.

Originally BJJ had white, blue, and navy (dark blue)...so technically you could just wear a navy belt when you get to black.
