That ESG hire rainbow dumpling also had a post-cancellation meltdown attacking and mocking the general audience for "killing" her wonderful show. We'll never get to see how amazing S2 is now! Which... to be fair, S2 could be much better than S1. I mean, they'd have to actively try to make it worse. But.... this is a general problem in the media world that they never put their best foot forward. They get so excited about created a shared cinematic universe or setting up a sequel, that they forget to actually give audiences a reason to care about the beginning. You need to build the first floor of the house before building the second. So yeah, maybe S2 really was a great story that would have justified Gren and blah blah blah.... then why didn't they start with that? Or why involve Gren before they were ready to explore the character. Gren doesn't pop up until half way through the series in the anime and it's a big shock for Spike when they bump into each other. But we all know why. The rainbow dumpling was projecting too hard onto the script and forced us this "representation" in her image, and not an interesting take on the character. For one, the original Gren was already grappling with confusion, loss of identity, gender dysphonia, guilt, shame, abandonment, etc... and they could have really run with that as a way to explore the struggles of trans people to a cisgendered audience. Gren didn't ask to have this body, Gren doesn't feel comfortable in this body. So by flipping the paradigm of a trans character discussing gender dysphoria to a general audience of cis-folk that typically don't understand, they could have had a cis-character (Gren) deal with the forced changes to his body as a way to bridge that gap and help general (cis) audiences understand the horror of gender dysphoria a little. And, ofc, be more true to the character. But that would require respecting the source material and generally pulling her head out of her woke-hole... and we can't have that!

She's not wearing those shorts because it's warm everywhere she goes. The problem with the Netflix version is that there's no understanding of the character. She's just a nutter with guns. @@nagoranerides3150 Yes, Faye Valentine's outfit is sexy... but its not like she's wearing her underwear on the outside like a lot of anime characters, now is she? It was a normal outfit - regular shorts, and a button down tank top, with suspenders, boots and thigh high stockings underneath. If you take out the stockings her outfit would look perfectly normal on a 20-something woman when the series was originally released. There's clothes that look good on someone and then there's a stripper outfit - which is what many female anime characters wear. Faye's outfit is simply normal clothing, only made sexy by maybe 1 extra button undone on her blouse. One of the long-standing complaints that Trekkies have had about "Star Trek" over the decades (even more-so during the current -nutrek- era) is that one of our own- a knowledgeable _fan from outside the production-_ has never been put into an authority position in terms of writing or directing. For whatever reason, the idea of putting a _Star Trek_ fan in charge of a _Star Trek_ production has been allergy of Hollywood. The first example of this _finally_ coming to pass was John Logan, who wrote _Star Trek Nemesis_ (2004). By his own admission, he wanted the movie to highlight things from the franchise then that he enjoyed; a love-letter of sorts to the fans. It ended up being a copy-paste disaster and spelling the end of Classic Trek on the big screen. The second example was Justin Lin, director of _Star Trek Beyond_ (2016). While still a -bad robot- employee, Lin demonstrated that he understood the "heart" of _Star Trek_ in his movie, and was ultimately _blessed_ to have both Simon Pegg ("Montgomery Scott") and Doug Jung writing it, who actually both cared about _Star Trek_ pre-Kelvin Timeline as well. You can argue the merits and pacing of the film all you want to (certainly I have my own opinion of it), but most will agree that the _failure_ at the box office for _Star Trek Beyond_ specifically was more due to the _rejection of its immediate predecessor rather than_ the movie itself; unfair as that may seem, that _is_ what happened.

"Hollywood" just doesn't get "anime". One of the main attractions of Cowboy BeBop is the existential angst which encompasses the anime. This was totally absent in the Netflix series (I struggled through the pilot episode). Boredom (existential ennui) and loneliness also play a big roles in the anime version, which are not good themes for a live action sustainable series. As you stated, the Netflix series portrayed them as a "family". Finally, you can't improve on perfection. A live action drama was unnecessary and redundant. The same goes for Ghost in the Shell.

I couldn’t agree more. It still felt like what was created had potential but was massively let down more so by the writers than anything else including the visuals. Shame it had to end this way. It feels like, if they got a whole new bunch of writers with actual veteran experience outside of the typical Hollywood and American TV dramas, they could actually get this stuff done right for a second season.

Your insight on how writers are chosen is great. In video games, movies, and comics, I and many others not in these industries have noticed a drastic increase in these super "woke" writers who are...frankly not talented at all. It's as if having the "correct political leaning" is all that matters. It's the same with video game journalism. I have a question for you about this. It seems like making "woke" cartoons, movies, and TV shows isn't working out financially. Yet "Hollywood" keeps trying to push for it. Why is that? Is woke culture really more important than money for a lot of people? I feel like I have to be missing something. Things like tokenism are in full effect everywhere. It's something I notice as a black man myself. It seems to be an accepted form for "diversity" among the woke crowd. I'm sure people running the show don't care either way, but I can't figure out why they keep doing it when it fails over and over.

The problem is as William Goldman said, "Nobody knows anything". It's then the loudest voices that get attention. If pandering to a crowd gets a project funded and then made, well so be it. What most forget is the studio is the one at risk. What you seen on screen is old news. Everyone has already been paid and has moved (hopefully) to other projects. For the creatives it has become a resume and the more popular it is, the better.

From what I can gather. They could be a bit nervous about it. A lot of these 'Woke' Crowds have a lot of standing within the Social Media. Their like Honey to the Bees of the Media. They may be small, but their very load. So whenever they start crying about something, the Media flocks to them in swarm and that's a lot of bad rep these companies can not afford. or at least, 'Feel' like they can't. I mean, in their view. Arnt these 'woke' People supposed to be the 'Good' guys here? always having the best intentions for the community in representation? Who doesn't want to be in the 'Right' Side of History??? Having these types of people by your side, telling you what you should do "For the good of the Community" is a very toxic atmosphere. Makes these companies antsy. BUT, They are slowly but Gradually wising up to their nonsense. Over time as everything they touch crumbles, these companies start to loose their already VERY small patience with these people and began to ignore them. From what I hear in the 'Inside'. A lot of people who work in these industries really don't agree with them, like at all. but because they have such a load mouth in Media, if they don't comply. their livelihood is practically threaten so they have to go with it. It is what it is I guess and if you want to keep your job. might as well 'Play Along' But like I said, a lot of Companies within the Entertainment Industry are wising up to their nonsense. Slowly but Gradually.

With the ESG thing the creator touched on. I think it is because the people that actually control the money want it because it keeps them distracted from them with the culture war BS. They probably got this idea with how they were able to successfully derail occupy wallstreet movement by injecting identity politics into it. Then again, this is all a theory. I think it really isnt all that farfetched. We could also be at the point that this shit is now self perpetuating since this culture has been cultivated so long that people now believe in this crap, because they wanted to play with fire. They probably don't care since they probably got theirs and are now older and could give less of a damn.

In every live action adaptation of anime that has failed that I have seen (a dozen or so, so far), the common problems is always that the people writing and creating the story *DO NOT* keep the characters as the characters. Bebop failed because the characters (all of them) were not the same characters as the anime. You can translate character, even if you can't translate spectacle. Instead they focused on translating spectacle, and then increasing it or changing it, instead of translating over the characters and building on top of that. I suppose none of that work sounds impressive to the people they were pitching this turd to, so they tried pitching "big fights" and "funny dialogue" instead. Good riddance. They never should have made this, frankly.
@ninjafoxgamesgeekery2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. Honestly, if the characters had been written properly, you could just jump in with the crew assembled and do new stories set prior to Episode 20 of the series. If you absolutely had to build the crew, adapt each member's first appearance from the anime and otherwise do new episodes that could have been treated as interwoven with the anime and fit just fine. If they had thought of it as "We're going to do a series in the same approach as 'Knocking on Heaven's Door'" and, so long as the characters are right, it could work.

Honestly the closest thing I’ve seen to a perfect anime live-action agitation would have to be Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johansson. Sure I can see it had a few little flaws, but on the whole I really really enjoyed the film and feel like it definitely doesn’t deserve all the hate that it seems to get. The script felt a bit compressed but on the hole was still pretty solid for the length of the film, plus the acting by everyone was brilliantly done and the visuals were perfect. The other one would have to be Alita battle angel. I might put that just below or equal to Ghost in the Shell depending on how you look at it or what you prioritise in a story. Visually though I put them equal to each other even though they both run on very different aesthetics.

The fight scene issue was a big one for me in the early episodes, the director didn't cut away quick enough with thrown punches and even 250ms-500ms too long makes the fight scenes look slow and awkward. Faye is the queen of hearts a legend that goes back 300 years (when she was frozen), and is supposed to be this femme fatale. They removed the femme fatale and the gambling and the legend. The writing for Faye removed all her background motivation and destroyed the character by trying to make her pityable rather than strong.

I generally agree. The only modification was Faye’s character was changed so much it did not resemble the original one at all. At least Spike was a 60% match and Jet almost 100%. As for extended run time, they could of put two anime episodes into each live action one, but personally I would of done totally new episodes, slotted somewhere in between the anime episodes. Finally, so many unnecessary changes were made to the supporting characters, they would have been better off just using new unknown characters, which again support my idea they should have done new original episodes.

Just a few comments, and this seems like the best place to put it since you talked about changes needed to adapt it to a longer running format. For better or worse my partner and I are fans of The Tick. That late 90's cartoon that only had a few seasons, then was rebooted for 2 separate live action series. As you said with Bebop, the live series couldn't have come close to the animations so far as action, or stunts, sets, etc. What The Tick did, was didn't really do any of the action, and focus it on the personal stories of these characters and the expanded The City. The first adaptation (which is really worth watching) had many nods in the background to some of the cartoon villains and action, without trying to show it in a cheap and campy way. The most recent version, on Netflix of all places, maybe doesn't do it as well and draws it out a little more, but they do focus a lot on The City and personal lives rather than try to go all in with action scenes and effects. I do wish the most recent adaptation did another season, with more episodic focus on villains like the cartoon, but it was a nice way to end it and I'm not sitting here years later wanting my time back. I know Cowboy Bebop is almost sacred to fans, it's held in reverence and spoken about in hushed whispers as the best anime ever, and it had a big impact on my life. However, I'm not sure why this adaption couldn't have followed something like The Tick, and stay in the same world but focus on different aspects and therefor add something to the anime original, or at least not take it away. All that trying to copy it, like it seems Netflix did, was to allow us to compare it (sometimes scene to scene and line for line) with the original. Where as The Tick, each version stands on its own. IMO

@tempestfury83242 жыл бұрын
Actually Hollywoke failed because they thought the American public was even aware of Cowboy Bebop....which they weren't. Then they believed it would be marketable to change these characters to be more palatable for a mainstream audience. That is why it's was a failure! It wasn't like the tiny imperfections of Peter Jackson's adaptations of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Or a film that would do justice to fandom. It was an attempt to cash in on what they believed the audience wanted from a franchise that is still relatively unknown.

The show really struggled to find its own identity. It kept ping-ponging back and forth between cool moments and awkward moments, interesting new ideas and bad new ideas, intriguing call backs to the anime and clumsy call back to the anime. It just didn't come together. And then there's Faye Valentine: Netflix Faye just couldn't stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Spike and Jet. She had the presence of a kid sister/sidekick character from an old sitcom. I can't help but wonder if the actress was tacitly aware of her character's shortcomings, which may have informed her public meltdown just a bit.

I just honestly believe that any live-action adaptation of any form of animation will simply not work. One of the key elements of making animated features fun to watch is the visual aesthetics resulting from the animation. The energy, the colors, the atmosphere, the intensity, the freedom of expression; it just works under different rules compared to the real world. I have yet to see a good live-action anime adaptation and most Disney live-action remakes have been mediocre or outright terrible. I mean Beauty and the Beast is almost a complete redo of the animated film scene for scene and it still feels like a lesser version. Just feels a bit lifeless and flat. Of course, a great writer could probably make anything work. But great writers are rare and as mentioned here, aren't guaranteed to create hits anyway. There are so many elements that need to be nailed to effectively translate an animated feature into live-action that it probably wouldn't be worth the effort for most projects. Another approach is to simply be inspired by an animated feature and create a vastly different end product that simply borrows elements from its source material. That way, focus can be directed towards telling an original story and making sure that the story is crafted to the highest quality. But at that point, why bother calling it a live-action adaptation anyway? So yeah, I think live-action adaptations are simply pointless endeavors. Avatar The Last Airbender was presented perfectly in its animated form; what could a live-action adaptation of that possibly offer that would add anything of value?

Speaking as an animator, the thing that horrified me the most was the obvious lack of comprehension on the direction side that this was, in fact, an adaptation. Everyone assumes turning a novel into a film is hard because there aren't any pictures so you have to invent that part. But the assumption with an appalling number of live action anime remakes is that "the pictures are already there. I can just copy that into the real world and it will work." But it *doesn't* because animation is all about stylization and exaggeration. You can't put actual humans into a setting like that and make it work unless you're going full on 1960's Batman camp. The thirty seconds or so that we got seeing Ed is a concentrated dose of "the director and cinematographer have zero clue about how to create a new visual language and tone for the adaptation. They're just copying and they don't know what they're doing." The writing was not the only problem here. Not by a long shot. There was a fundamental problem with the directing.

Usually, it's not deserved, and even less so in this case. So I feel it's a good sign that many people are acknowledging that the issues with Netflix Bebop are not with the main actors or actress at all, and are instead focusing far more on the production and writing. On the other hand, I listened to all the audiobooks for The Expanse -- in that medium, the space opera works much better, imho. I felt the reboot of Battlestar Galactica actually did this even better, at least for a few seasons, til it lost its way. On the other hand, I felt Firefly was really entertaining, short-lived as it was. (Foundation kinda lost me in a way that feels a lot like the LOTR series.) Everything stems from the writing. I'm still of the opinion that many of the short comings was driven by ideology. For example, I don't really care about the race swapping ultimately as long as the core character was intact. Dont misunderstand, as i think race swapping for the explicit reason of diversity is just tokenization by another name rather than getting the best actors and actresses in the role. If these selected performers were the best for the role, and the core traits of the characters were there, itd be ok to me. Afterall, of they were casted to be accurate to the anime in terms of identity but everything else was the same, it'd still suck. However, the reality is they very likely behind the scenes selected people with DIE in mind, and then proceeded to butcher the characters and their personality again for DIE ideology. Which is the issue in the end. The ideology informed what decisions were to be made and that is a big part of the problem.

I think this misses what was arguably the most fundamentally flawed decision made in adapting the material, which was forcing what had been a highly episodic series into Netflix’s standard “ten-hour movie” formula. More than the need to pad for runtime in individual episodes, what really plagued the syndicate storyline was the necessity to expand it into the narrative spine of the entire series. This decision in turn forced Spike’s character to be written differently, because his old life loomed large over his head in every episode as opposed to being something which only periodically resurfaced.

Not quite a dead ringer - Anime Faye is designed to look Chinese (Well, Anime Chinese, but still). The main problem was the costuming wasn't something that fit the character at all - you could de-sexualize the outfit, but still make it fitting for a femme fatale - they didn't. In fact they went as hard as they could to delete that from Faye's entire character, turning her into the second worst character in the show (next to their version of Vicious, and even then, only just).

I talked about this too on my podcast. Cowboy Bebop failed cuz they couldnt get the basics right. The costumes...the race of the characters...the background of the characters...the sexuality of the characters. They changed everything from the original IP.

Appreciate the perspective, making me think some wiser decisions could of got them to season 2 despite the major flaws. Better luck next time for Netflix adaptations!

Yes, but Netflix just rather quickly cancelled than invest in a show that had a rocky start.

English dubs of anime shows are 100% better, even on Netflix.

“Sycophantic fame fuckers” I couldn’t smash the subscribe button harder. I need to play this tangential opening on how “Hollywood Hates Writers” for anyone who asks me why I don’t make movies anymore or why I didn’t stay in LA very long. As a long time Bebop fan this analysis is spot on. I didn’t make it thru the pilot. 20 minutes in and I had seen enough. Very excited to explore this channel. Not sure how I haven’t found it sooner.

I'm amazed by your experience in this important topics, today the entertainment is the wild west, there is no clear leader as it used to be in Netflix golden days.

I agree with almost everything you said, the only thing I disagree with is your description of the original, and Spike's masculine character. As the original was fun and action packed, it dealt with dark themes, and did it realistically. The characters are all haunted by their past, bottle their emotions up, and hardly communicate with each other. Which is a realistic dynamic you hardly see on TV, and ultimately leads to their downfall. Unlike the Netflix version of course, where everyone needs to be a family, and talks in an exaggerated, unrealistic manner. The reason I think Spike is such a great character is because he hooks you in as a cool, masculine power fantasy, yet is ultimately emotionally crippled by his feelings of unfulfillment due to his past. Making a more realistic, relatable, and likeable male hero than the crap hollywood pushes out today.

I think we're actually agreeing. Anime Spike had those emotions, he just didn't yammer about them all the time. He was stoic.

@@CallMeChato well I meant I disagreed with your description of him and how the original was paced, as your description was a tad one dimensional Guess I’m nitpicking, I just love the original so much 😂

And the tragedy is that he's so young and horribly jaded.

The Anime Spike did not consern his life. He was living at spare time and that makes him somewhat careless… Other anime charactes also were darker / more sinister that the live action ones. Vicious was pure sadistic killing machine in the anime. Everything was toned down and character were more ”heroic” and pland without any weanesses that made the charaters what they really are. Radical Edvard is just impossible to do in live action… Nobody could do that. One good idea that I have seen was that Ed would be only seen through computer connection and newer would be part of the ”real” crew in person. That would have worked. But the main point was that the theme was not beepop. The lost of crimnes, worries of normal life, everything that did make the world feel like living real thing, with misfit main characters. Maybe some day we could see good anime adaptation. We have seen good anime style movies! Matrix is pure anime! Joch Wick movies are also pure anime. Firefly TV series did show that space western works. So it is possible… Just hard, hard to do well. Matrix sequels were not very good. Joch Wick still looks good, but story is npot progressing. Not an easy task…

I saw an interview where Al Lewis was talking about when he guest starred on Lost in Space. The show ran short and the writers had left. So he grabbed Johnathan Harris and they did an old vaudeville skit. Could actors do that today.
