It’s actually kinda crazy how Blizzard could 100% could make so much more money with adding skins on launch day with these amazing looking characters. Overwatch’s monetization is absolutely garbage since they only make skins for characters that are popular and strong but the character balance is so bad so they’re stuck giving more skins to characters that don’t need them.

Yeah, compare the consitency of content during the mirrorwatch season with now. Everything fit that one theme. Now we have egyptian gods, polar expedition, japanese mythology and heists all crammed into one season. They also brought back the kpop skins (which is nice for people who missed them but it's just another example of reusing already produced content.)

They've always mixed in unrelated skins, like even back in season 1 when they had a long leadup to launch, they put safari and military skins in the cyberpunk battlepass.

My guess is that up to Illari or Mauga, these were the cosmetics they had ready and that they worked on during the OW1 drought. Now they are far behind on cosmetics and probably can't keep up, because of the layoffs. And this is why they release so many recolors per season. But it's still very weird how Kiriko keeps getting new skins every single season, sometimes even more than one!

Well, if they can make money with her skins they will prioritize them... I mean, if they can do 9 new original skins for a season, why they should make a zarya or a Ball skin over a Kiriko or Mercy skin? if a kiriko skin will make them earn much more money than the zaryas one and that will help the team to have money to produce new content on the future? It's a question of popularity, if you can't right now make skins for all the characters because of money/number of devs, you need to make skins that you know people will buy a lot to make benefits and with that obtain resources from up because you are being profitable. it's simple capitalism, offer and demand. I would love to see more Brig skins, but for every brig main there are 20 kiriko mains or 20 mercy mains. And even if they release a Brig skin on the shop, I will not buy it, but the Mercy/Kiriko mains... I remember see people on day one of season 10 with the Mercy Mythic. An skin you could obtain for 5$ on the season pass, they wasted 80$ to had it on day one. That's the reason they make so much Kiriko or Mercy skins right now, because if the character have a big playerbase, there are more chances that somebody will waste money on those skins and they will have more resources to make new future content.

The reason we're still getting more Kiriko, Mercy, and Genji skins despite the layoffs is simply because those are heroes whose skins are proven to sell extraordinarily well. From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense to prioritize making skins for heroes who consistently make the most money, especially when you're low on manpower, because if the game isn't making enough money, the suits at Microsoft aren't gonna reinvest more into the production of the game.

Honestly its so bizarre for overwatch to cancel big things like skill trees and pve, to then say pvp is the big focus where skins and the battlepassIS the content that is left, and then not be transparent with the community about the set backs. If they said "hey, layoffs hit, and we are behind schedule but working hard to catch up!" I think sentiment would be a ton better than "Venture will get a skin 2 seasons from now." :/ Ppl acting like players are needlessly whiney about no skins for new heros is setting the bar even LOWER bc uh. Overwatch SHOULD be atleast hyping up the overpriced skins they want to sell lmafo. Otherwise it feels like a lifeless skin factory, and an insult to players that enjoy characters but get nothing. Every character up to Mauga had a BP skin alongside their release, but notice how since Venture was the first character to be released separately from the BP, they don't get a BP skin? Lets not forget characters like sojourn and junker queen have voice lines for shield generator an ability removed years ago. If i had to guess most these base models, voices, and lore for the characters were created by teams back in overwatch 1 era... Im guessing the art team is more focused on things like the promotional event skins such as one punch, kpop, and transformers. This is pretty sad though because as we add in more characters it just means we are going to get less and less skins over time for characters you enjoy and more focus on the big sellers like mercy, genji and kirko. Also means we are probably never going to get high quality cinematics again :/

Recently one of the skin makers said on Twitter that some decisions are out of their hands even if they don’t want to do it. I personally took that as them saying they want to give more skins to other heroes but that the higher ups tell them they must give some every season to the top selling heroes. Just my opinion

i think the point you make near the end about characters not being finished until their release is very real. Juno's ultimate voice line was changed and new effects were added to her abilities, plus more settings were added from her trial period, whereas venture and mauga shipped in the same state as their teaser. I'm hoping that once they find their footing under new management they will go back and give all the new ow2 heroes more base skins - like that time when they added all those base loot box skins in ow1 (i think they were blizzard themed). Definitely not happening but i can dream. Highlight intros have also taken a huge hit in ow2, venture only had 1 on launch, and only a few new heroes have 3 base game highlight intros. The quality of highlight intros has gone so far down too, we used to get action shots and now we just get smiles in slo mo.

I do agree that the timeline might add up. Six months is probably about what their production pipeline is. Might also explain why so many new skins have been recolors lately. However at the same time it doesn’t really make sense because blizzard IS making new skins. They are just making them for characters that already have dozens of legendary skins. So on some level, someone at blizzard is deciding to prioritize making more skins for old heroes instead of new heroes. Which just makes no sense from a moneymaking perspective.

I really must say that Overwatch has become way less fun for free to play people. You can’t get skins for newer champs and with the exclusion of loot boxes the amount of skins you get is very minor and all skins you receive are very predictable. I do not get why they don’t have a system like LoL or Apex, where you have a shop with highly priced skins AND a loot box system. Every skin could just get added to the lot pool after maybe two seasons. But, free to play people would have way more fun and might consider buying some things. The current system is really just plain and boring

I noticed that with heroes like lifeweaver, illari and mauga (specifically Illari) that at the start of their release there hasnt been much, but NOW theres a more consistent flow of content coming through like any other hero. like the battle pass skins and shop skins and collab skins. So i think its pretty likely that eventually overwatch will catch up to juno and venture like the last heros, but any new heros will have to go through the same process with no skins on release then a big break before getting a decent flow like normal.

this is literally what they did with every content ow2 get, why ow2 doesnt feel like a sequel? because ow2 was going to be only the pve when they announced it, the pvp was going to be left intact, they canceled pve long before ow2 launch, so they changed the format to 5vs5 to justify the 2 and the few content already made or planned for ow1 has to be launched to have any content. the pve missions launched were playable in 2019 for fuck sake. now they have a seropus problem, lay offs happened on january, they have nothing for the future, all this content we get this year was done long ago

this is pretty much exactly what i think is the reason, but a couple more proofs to this speculation: 1. they talked about mythic skin production during season 1 and they mentioned how they worked several seasons forward with them which proves the buffer they have w production 2. the current battlepass being super off theme, a polar skin, heist skins etc, it definitely feels like they're scraping skins to fit into the season since their pace got messed up by microsoft purchase 3. they quite often talk about their walk run sprint mentality and it makes a lot of sense with how rn they're focusing on picking up the pace on gameplay, being balance gamemodes and heroes and they'll pick up the pace back on the skins soon

I think with venture they haven't gotten a legendary because the weapon is so unique, I mean how can you redesign a drill/canon thing to fit a skin concept while still looking similar enough. It still needs to resemble a drill, be around the same size, two handed and a way to fire the projectiles

I don't get it in any way, even if they did not have the budget for an extra skin, maybe they could've done one less Mercy skin and let that department at least make on legendary for Juno. People would impulsively buy the skin for Juno just because she's new, but truthfully some players will lose interest in her overtime, so if they launch a skin next season, the Juno hype is already partially over. No matter how you put it, giving Juno a skin would've been the best option. Venture could've received an Egyptian skin, which would've sold well too as many people do play Venture and their theme aligns with the battlepass theme. Literally who is making these awful decisions?

They probably have tens of Mercy skins waiting for release from OW1 and earlier OW2 days. Would not shock me if it came out that they've mostly been releasing older stuff and characters like Venture are much newer conceptually and everything and simply don't have that stockpile of work behind them. The lore behind Venture is nearly nonexistent, so perhaps they're just half baked at present. Stuff that can be bought with credits is also probably at the absolute bottom of the priorities list though. I can't imagine they make any money whatsoever off of those.

Yeah, it’s obviously issues with production resources. There’s also been a sharp reduction in the rate of wholly new skins offered in the shop. Many more shop slots are filled by skins that were initially released at some earlier time, and many of the new skins are just new colors/textures on the model of an existing skin. It’s not a coincidence that this is happening at the same time that new heroes are releasing with fewer and fewer skins

I have friends who also worked at OW (not currently) and games/companies alike, and I can confirm that whether it's animation, art design, or 3D, most things you see have been done 2 years - 6 months in advance. In the worst cases, it can almost be a week-to-week or month-to-month when pushed against a really bad deadline by a poorly managed production from the higher-ups above your project. Now if these problems exist in OW2, my guess it's not Aaron and his team; it's more of who is above them and what they're being given to work with in terms of funding, time, etc. Juno was announced last year, and as mentioned in the video her design was not final, and I am pretty sure even Venture's character was NOT completed around that time as well. In OW1 they had the pipeline/plan down in terms of the cosmetics and rewards they wanted to make. The game was in production for a LONG time and also had no financial pressure yet because no one knew what the demand for a game like OW at the time would be. The OW1 team seemed to be at least 2 Heroes ahead most of the time. Where OW2 has changed their team basically once over, which means until they hire someone new, those art and dev duties either fall on someone who is in crunch time or being put on pause until they fill that role. I agree you CANNOT start marking skins or assets for a character you have NOT 100% finalized in their 3D model. You will end up going back and forth changing designs on every skin you had previously made... As you saw, the devs, vfx, sfx teams had to change audio/visual elements for Juno after her beta test for their full release, which wasn't a lot of time. Sometimes in art or animation, simple things can take WAAAY more time to complete than you'd think it does. As for re-colors, I'm sure they are easier to pump out; however, while I cannot speak for any devs or artists, I am sure they would rather be making dope skins if they could for all the characters and prob are for future seasons. Also to keep in mind, business, art, 3D, animation, etc, are ALL different departments. This does not mean Aaron or devs are pricing them. There is prob a lot of red tape and permissions they must get from people above them, which in turn can slow them down. I am sure they wish they had direct control over these things to change them sooner. In the end, I think the team is in the process of getting their footing back and doing their best to get ahead of production. Hopefully they will be allowed to hire some people in the right departments needed so they can work comfortably in all roles.

I think it comes down to their decision making. They 100% could develop new heroes alongside at least 2 legendary cosmetics for their release if they didn't choose to make more skins for the same few heroes that are guaranteed to sell more. i think that with the fact that Venture isn't getting a legendary until December at the earliest, and that they didn't get any for the Egyptian mythology season is going to leave a lasting bad taste in players mouths. Especially if the new standard is releasing heroes with 0 legendary cosmetics and potentially not getting any until multiple months after their release. like 6v6 v 5v5 this is something blizzard will have to address eventually.

Ive had the same idea's on them not making new skins as of late. You see the same issue with the Battlepasses having more recolors each season, or like this season where they threw in some of the arctic skins that they showed off before OW2 even launched. Seems like the majority of skins they are currently working on are focused on their colabs.

I think a decent way for blizzard to sort this is to bring back lootboxes. But. In a fun way. When you get to the extra tiers of the battlepass you shouls get a title and like 5 lootboxes in the earlier tiers and 10 in the later tiers. It makes it so people who dont want to spend all their money on the skins that you can buy in the hero gallery. Just a random idea i discuessed with friends

The skins being released now were processed and made months ago back when Blizzard had a fuller staff. Those people were laid off over the last year, so new skins are gonna be harder to come by. For a similar reason, PVE isn't being made: there weren't enough people dedicated to it, and Blizzard couldn't figure it out in a way that made battlepass-level money.

Yeah, this makes sense, I think. There are other ways you can tell that the Blizzard art team is severely understaffed and ill-equipped to handle the seasonal workload right now; consider, for example, highlight intros. People on Reddit at least have been complaining that a lot of the newer highlight intros are kind of boring or "floaty" and not as dynamic as some of the more interesting highlight intros we've had in the past. I bet a lot of this is a result of layoffs as well.

I personally believe that this slow down in content for Overwatch 2 stems from over-ambition. Even in blizzards current state, they did mention before the Microsoft acquisition occurred how mythic skins take a lot of development time and that they’re not able to keep up with the quality standard they set for themselves at launch. Not to mention that the process of making each legendary takes a lot of time, some can take as long as a mythic to make. Not just that, but apart of making a skin also requires them to use their own source code, which could also create technical issues. Very weird things can occur from any content addition, like skins making players unable to be rendered by enemies, giving an advantage. So making 2 legendaries for a new hero every 2 and a 1/2 months is an unrealistic expectation unless they plan ahead of time and begin developing skins to launch with these new characters. Seeing how much people blizzard lost, I imagine coordinating that will take some time before they’re able to do that again.

I think they are just creating hype around the character through the principle of scarcity of skins, in order to have everybody buy the legendary skin as soon it goes out. Even if shop skins are cooler/rarer, a lot of people would just buy the non-shop ones and be satisfy with one of those

i think the skins situation is more upsetting for loreheads, even with the battle pass skins there’s just a focus on pumping out poorly thought out skins people will probably want to buy rather than in overwatch one where a lot of new skin releases related to an aspect of gameplay (junkenstein stuff) or an actual chunk of at least some part of lore (captain horus, blackwatch reyes etc). it feels like the new devs have just abandoned the lore at this point :’)
