I have been watching many different dog videos, I want you to know you are the best. Why? Because many of them teach you just a little and their main purpose is to sell their on line videos or different product or use loud back ground music , combine the teaching with un necessary jokes, too much talking, talking about their personal matters and etc... you mean well, you really want to help us . You are right on point. You are professional, giving and excellent at your job. Thank you so much.

As you said environment makes a big difference. On walks, sometimes my dog isn’t interested in any treat, because the environment itself has a higher value (sights, sounds, other people/dogs. Or my dog won’t take a treat because he is shut down/overwhelmed. I’m glad you explained that the behavior might be too advanced for the environment. Thanks for the video.

I've noticed that for me, one way to evaluate a training approach is to pay attention to the demeanor of the dogs featured in the videos of various trainers. Some trainers get their dogs riled up when they praise them. Some take pleasure in the rambunctiousness of their dogs. I just love how your dogs are in your videos, and how your interact with them. It resonates with me as being like the vibe I want to develop with our soon-to-arrive puppy. Calmness, peace, it's lovely.

Such a great trainer. The nuances and detail of dog training are Emily's forte and not really mentioned much by other online trainers. I've been doing her leash walking course and my 9 month old very excitable border collie doodle is really improving. He went to puppy classes when he was younger and couldn't focus on anything, he was so keen to greet other dogs and people. In despair I searched through online training stuff and found Emily. I like using cheese for my dog when I'm indoors, especially when I'm cooking in the kitchen. I've often got it grated, and I don't have to wash my hands after handling it (I'll usually place it in front of my boy, rather than letting him take it from my hands, of course), which makes it useful in situations where I'm not doing a training session and need to reinforce a behaviour on the go (e.g. he goes and lies down on his bed when he notices me cooking in the kitchen). I love the 'treat A or treat B?' game to determine which treats they view as being of higher value, I'm definitely going to have to try that! It's very helpful to hear about the use of lower value treats for 'calmer' cues - I quite often use higher value treats as my boy is a bit picky about dry foods, but he's also often over-excited during training, which can make teaching certain calmer behaviours quite tricky. Are there any concerns about dogs e.g. gulping air & having a risk of bloat from certain treat types, like dry treats, or treats which are too small?
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 жыл бұрын
Treat too small they could aspirate on. Its a good idea to not do exercise 30 mins before a meal and 30 mins after a meal. But I make sure not to have my dogs stand up, do paws up on me, run or roll for a couple hours after eating... to avoid bloat.

Hello! Thank you so much for this video! We have a new corgi puppy and your instructions are such a lifesaver. I just want to ask, is it normal for a puppy to get so overexcited during training sessions that they start barking at you and what to do in those situations? I'm worried that I'm using the treats a bit too much because I'm trying to reinforce some of their calming behaviors, but I wonder if I'm not actually training any behaviors at all and our dog now just expects treats at all times. Thank you so much and I hope you and your dogs have a great day!

Enjoying your training videos and explanations. I would really appreciate you breaking down how you work out how much to feed your dog. The feeding guide that comes with food (kibble) is fine. You take about 10% away to feed as treats for training. But then on top of this, you need to add the high and medium value treats, all with different calorific value. So how do you make sure you do not end up overfeeding your puppy?

Hi Emily! Do you have a video that teaches how to plan and schedule or track your dog’s training?
@Haferkoko
@Haferkoko 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video! Very informative as always. One thing I didn't like was the suggestion to use the dog's kibble as bait. I did that for default leave it training once and used cheese as the better option, and what happened was that the dog stopped touching kibble altogether and always expected cheese for leaving kibble alone. I also could not use kibble as a training reward anymore because it completely lost its value. It took days for her to want to eat kibble again, and weeks for it to become a reinforcer again. What I learned from this was that it's much better to use a variety of food (or empty containers that still smell of the food that was inside) as bait that you don't actually ever plan to use as a reward, because the point of the training is that those things will lose their value.
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 жыл бұрын
That is kind of rare, but you did an amazing job proving that you can teach an animal to not want food using positive reinforcement and classical conditioning. The fix would be to use kibble just for a few reps before then using other things. This you described is how I train dogs to ignore prey and moving cars if they chase cars etc. I am going to be doing a video on that in the next month or two. Its funny, I did a tutorial on teaching droping high value chews like pigs ears and bully sticks for guarding dogs, and can you believe it, a month later I handed them out and all the dogs had no interest in them! There are some behaviors that I call ying yang behaviors, if you work on one too much the other disappears and vice versa- for example teaching drop and get it to tug, work on drop too much and tug gets weaker, work on tug excitement and drop gets weak, until you have generalized the behaviors. So with food drive, if leave it exercises get the dog calm mellow and not into food as much, you can build food drive by playing games with food. games of tossing kibble, games where you put a kibble down and do "ready, steady, ready, steady.... GET IT... etc.

Do you have any tips for dogs who have been inadvertently been conditioned to think of treats as a punisher? I have a very high drive border collie who has a preferred reinforcer of play. That is great for known behaviors, but hard to onboard new ones. Very high value will still trigger the same response, but to a lesser extent. He is quick to frustration, and my theory is that over time, sessions of freeshaping and learning new things with food now cause the response on presentation (or even my hand going into the pouch). He’s been training with errorless learning to combat, so I’m running low on ideas to help! I also tried counter conditioning with toys as a reinforcer for eating but that backfired! (Kind of like working on how you build value into another reinforcer with a preferred reinforcer type exercise)

is it recommended to train calmness around food with low-value treats at the same time with high-value treats for other behaviors? I feel stuck trying to teach my dog because it seems like we're going back in progress for over-excitement with food. Also, for calming behaviors, should I have a calming marker every time I deliver a treat? tysm :)

This is good info, thanks. :D Personally, I can't use kibble for my dog anymore. She just refuses to work for it. lol She'll eat it in her dish, but. . .yeah. No real enthusiasm, even kibble she actually likes. -.- My 'standard' treats are some dehydrated/freeze-dried beef strips we can get at Costco here. (Preservative free) Or "Pure Bites" liver treats for 'special' tasks (again, preservative free.) But yeah. Personally, I find that using fresh food, or make my own dried meat treats is best. The fresh meat is great too, but yeah, has to be used fast, you almost have to plan for it. Or have some frozen, then unthawed for when you need it. Little bits of cheese too. HAH! About the petting reinforcement. . .yeah. My dog does not care for being petted much while we're out or busy training. She'll move away or avoid my hand. She'll let me touch her if necessary, to adjust her leash, or harness, etc, so mostly, this is fine. She's totally cuddly at other times and loves her snuggles. But not. . .at that point. AHAHAH Love that your dog nods and shakes his head when asked questions. Too cute!

Wish as you saw was grossed out by the kibble, but Splash is interested in any food.
@Elentarien
@Elentarien 3 жыл бұрын
lol Yes, Wish's response was what I usually get from my Emmi if I try kibble. Though occasionally I'll get the 'fine, I'll eat it, but I'm not interested'. They definitely have their own personalities, don't they? It's a pity because kibble makes the perfect treat. Measure out their daily allotment, then set aside a portion for treats and voila. But...yeah. The one treat I have been unable to try yet due to cost - what about freeze-dried food? (usually raw, I think, but I've seen some that look like they have other things in there too) It could be worked in as part of their balanced diet, but being dry, be easy to carry as treats. But yeah, cost-wise, it may not be doable for a lot of people.

This question is a little off topic but I’m currently on a waitlist for a mini schnoodle and the kibble the breeder uses is not one that I want to continue. From my research I should slowly introduce a new food but with the Grain-Free controversy I’m confused as to what kibble to switch to. The current kibble has a lot of corn and meat meal and I’m looking for one with better ingredients but not Grain-Free. I know you don’t endorse any particular products but I would love to know what you would suggest. Thank you for all of your videos I’m trying to be prepared for my fur baby arrives!🥰

Oh congrats! :) You must be so excited! Yes, I suggest what you said, feed the kibble the breeder gave then gradually switch to the new one. Most likely the pup will like the new one because of the novelty of it, so you could begin the change by feeding a small amount of the new ones as training treats if your pup likes them. Oh man, Voncille, I really honestly don't know what the best kibble is haha. One day I was feeling overwhelmed so I wrote a post on facebook asking what food people felt was best to feed (of my dog trainer friends and enthusiasts) and I got over 300 replies. I felt so overwhelmed. The Whole Dog Journal has been around for quite a while critiquing dog food. Here's an article that might help you choose. www.whole-dog-journal.com/food/whole-dog-journals-approved-dry-dog-food-list/ I was using I was using Taste of the Wild Puppy Food with Halo that I got from his breeder and I just kept him on it. It comes in a size for small dogs. But Im not saying its the best choice or anything.

What do you feed your dog for their meals? I've been doing a lot of research on raw feeding. (I love how you train, by the way)

Gosh... What I should eat and what my dogs should eat boggles my mind. I was set on feeding raw food, and then Splashs bloodwork came back unusual and then when I took her off raw the problem went away.. SO because of being paranoid. I took everyone off raw food.... Eventually Id like to learn to cook my own food for the dogs... But Im still trying to figure out which direction to go in. Im no expert and I guess I feel like people who are just getting into dog training and looking for info online- there is so much DIFFERENT info out there it can become overwhelming.

@@kikopup There has actually been research that shows that raw fed dogs do typically have different values for three specific blood work tests: Hematocrit, BUN, and Creatinine (source: drjeandoddspethealthresource.tumblr.com/post/134679160366/raw-diet-bloodwork-dog/amp). Vets who don't look into raw diets or oppose raw diets tend to be concerned about these results, I have read testimony from vets who support raw diets who don't think it's an issue, but I am neither a vet nor a canine nutritionist. Not sure if this is what Splash had, but for the OP (and anyone else curious about raw diets), I like to share the science I find. :)

@@kikopup I appreciate that you admit you're not an expert. I'm not either. More people need to be comfortable with the fact they don't know everything. My "heart"wants to feed raw because it's "natural" and makes me feel good, but my "brain" says that there's no scientific research showing raw has benefits over commercial foods. We really don't know that much about dog food and what's really "best". Before, grain-free food was "best". Now it's linked to deadly heart issues. Who knows anymore. It's all very confusing. Still trying to figure out what direction to take myself, but I'm sticking with the more researched brands until we have more evidence.

Hello Emily. Is there a way to train ones dog to enjoy petting? I think my dog enjoys petting when on my lap I’ll pet and rub her and she seems fine with it and likes to be on my lap or beside me But when she is off my lap, when I reach to pet her head, (not suddenly or fast) her ears (french bulldog) will mode aside like she’s accepting it but not liking it. I’ve tried rubbing her chest softly as I’ve learned some dogs don’t like a hand coming at them from above but she is passive and doesn’t come toward me for more if I stop and she never nudges me to be petted. Even on my lap if I stop she won’t nudge to be petted if I stop

we got a lab puppy 8 weeks old about 4 days ago I have tried about 5 differant store bought treats turkey chicken cheese and her kibble she will eat them all but none of them seem very reinforcing to her I have tried the game from your unmotivated by food vid and still seems like its not very reinforcing for her at all. She is like the example from the beginning of this video where she will walk away or take her time eating it but doesnt look to me for more or any last crums. any suggestions? is it normal for a young puppy to just not be that food motivated? or maybe stress from a new home? I have watched just about all of your videos waiting for our new pup and the thought of her not being excited by treats never crossed my mind every lab I have had a experince with has been a chow hound and overly excited about food

Low interest in food between meals can sometimes mean that the dog is completely full from the meals, especially if its kibble. As kibble when water is added expands to 2-3 times the size which happens in the stomach and can take 6 hours to digest. If you put down food and the dog cant finish it, it can mean the dog is full. So Then you can assume wont be hungry for at least 6 hours. I suggest feeding a few pieces of kibble in the bowl to teach a puppy how to eat from a bowl, and then use the rest of the breakfast for training.

Hey, I have a little bit of a problem. We have a very food driven Beagle mix and recently adopted a shy Shiba Inu. Whenever I try to train my Shiba my Beagle gets in the way because she wants the treats and because she thinks I am talking to her even though I am ignoring her. Now we do have a baby gate and I do 'lock her away' sometimes so I can train my Shiba in peace. But there are many instances like when we are outside for example where I can't exactly keep her out of the way and she makes it really difficult to give my Shiba positive reinforcement. Any tipps on this?

My dog is fear to go outside for a walk due to the crowded environment I live (many kids , lots of neighbours, lots of scary elevators). Aggression is showed after few years. Now I am thinking to stop the walk because I have no power to eliminate the negative environmental factors and I know my dog encounters great pressure in every walk. I do not know I am right or not. Emily, would you give me any advice ?

Hi Belle, Michael Shikashio actually does virtual training for reactivity and aggression, www.completecanines.com/michael-shikashio/ I would suggest getting a health check up with a full blood panel to rule out illness and perhaps pain. Yes, if possible, like if you have a car, you could take the dog to to the car and drive somewhere that people and dogs are far enough away that your dog feels safe. I know it's tricky living in an apartment. If your dog is alerting to noises and sounds when in your house working on that too will help in the training plan. dogmantics.com/solving-barking-at-noises/

Hi, thanks for all your videos, they’re great and I appreciate them. I had a question regarding using a clicker and/or “yes” when giving a treat. Would that be alright? Or should to stick to using one or the other? Is there a way to use both? I wanted to teach a release cue like “free” but wasn’t sure how to implement that with clicker marker training,

I don't know if you'll see this being as this video was over a year ago. Just in case.... Every treat I given my now 1-year-old miniature Aussiedoodle gives her VERY loose stools. I've tried everything from desiccated liver, lamb tripe, TO different little commercial dog treats, plus beef steak, cooked chicken, and ham. All of them have a similar reaction in her gut. WHAT SHOULD I USE?

You should seek advice from a nutritionist as I have not studied this topic. Might get slammed for this, but with my sensitive boy I use the Science Diet sensitive stomach kibbles for small breeds at treats. I dont feed kibble for the main meal so my dogs think the kibble is treats and I use them as such. As the nutritionist what food to feed and what treats to use.

Curious your thoughts on this. We're doing a group training class with a fantastic trainer. My shiba does not seem to care what treats I'm offering - low sodium hot dog, cheese, beef nibs, salmon nibs, Real Meat lamb jerky, he doesn't react with any particular enthusiasm. At first I thought maybe he just wasn't hungry, had his fill of treats, etc. But when our trainer comes over in class and works with him, he snaps to attention, does anything she wants with gusto, and responds like she's giving him filet mignon - when she is using the exact same beef nibs and lamb jerky! I save these treats just for class too. Am I a low value human and he's just bored with me because we work together all the time, and his trainer is a high value human because she's a novelty? My plan is to try some super high value food like chicken thighs and steak, we'll see how that goes. Any thoughts on what else I could do to improve his interest in me during group training?
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 жыл бұрын
yes! :) this is a very common problem in fact all my dogs do the same. The secret is to have the people who attend the class, "switch treats", get the trainer to give you some novel treats and let your dog see you taking them from the trainer... Its really stupid... but it actually works. Also make the trainer always use your treats, and give you their treats to use when they are leaving you. Dogs are often suckers for novelty. Also, I suggest when the trainer has worked with your dog, as they leave, use a high rate of reinforcement, so that the trainer leaving means lots of reinforcement from you.

I have stairs for my dogs to get on the bed but it takes a lot of training to teach them to use them especially to get down, as some dogs will jump OVER the stairs... One thing you can do is get one of those storage containers that go at the end of the bed that is 1/2 as tall as the bed then the dog can jump onto that then onto the bed. There are some really nice looking ones and a great place for extra storage. I had one myself but it had a lovely fabric top and one of my dogs barfed on it and it was not saveable...

Oh oops! I read 1 year not 1 month. You can put the kennel raised next to your bed so your pup can see you laying near him. :) Sorry I read through your comment so quick. Good thing I double checked. Yes it would not be good for your puppy if he were to jump off he could break his growth plates.
