Newcastle United are flying in the Premier League, playing some seriously intense and attractive football under Eddie Howe.
The Magpies have added to their squad heavily in the last 10 months, with Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak joining the Tyneside club. While a lot of money from their Saudi based investment fund has helped build this exciting squad at St James' Park, the manager also has them playing a brand of football that could see them push into the Top 4 this season.
JJ Bull explains how they got this far.

When Howe arrived people were worried about his defensive record, and that was exacerbated by his perceived emphasis on being attacking. But it goes to show how pressing is a form of defence - keep the ball up the pitch, away from goal. Howe showing that he’s well ahead of most fans’ perception of what good defence is, including mine. Kudos Eddie.

What non-Newcastle fans don't know is that Eddie Howe has also established a really strong sense of belonging and togetherness amongst the players, coaches, backroom staff etc. His leadership behind the scenes is exceptional. Players have often come out praising his man management, such as how he gets to know players on a personal level and how he shows genuine care for their well-being outside of football. He also instilled a mentality in the players to give everything they have, every single game, and all of the players have bought into this. You can see it by how high and intensively they press opponents. They play with passion and desire, and they want to do well for Howe and his staff. People will always involve money into the conversation but the truth is, Eddie Howe has been working absolute magic and he is at the very center of why Newcastle is now finally "united" once again.

It can also be interpreted from a tactical viewpoint. The tactic he uses requires that everyone commit to the team. If a single player won't do what he is required to do, team will collapse before long. Counter attacking based team, for example, is a little bit different. They tend to be too reliant on some players that are directly related to the scores. So the sense of togetherness won't grow so much in such team. One reason behind the jinx of Mourinho can be explained by this.

To be fair, newcastle didnt went on an insane splurge. The bulk of the transfer of the was from Botman, Guimaraes and Isak, which in Isak case I think is inflated. Pope was signed for 11mil, Taggart for 10mil. Another inflated fee i think was for Chris Wood. To be fair, they didnt break the bank. The majority of the squad is the same, I think its shows Eddie Howe and team's nuance and coaching ability. Identify the key area and put in extra work on coaching.

Eddie Howe is a great example of how one can constantly strive to improve, even if they're at (near) the highest level of their craft. Depsite how things ended, he achieved great things at Bournemouth. He took his dismissal as an opportunity to not just learn more about the game but he also pivoted to a style of play that is night and day in how Newcastle now play. It takes a humble man to do this but also one open to learning from others like Simeone. Eddie could have easily have put his feet up for a couple of months until the next job came along but he did the exact opposite! Huge respect for him as a coach and very inspiring as someone who has also been trhough setbacks in my early career. It's a marathon, not a sprint!

Going out and buying solid premier players (trippier, burns, woods) alongside the statement signings (Isak, Guimarães Botman) was a really smart move. Improving on the sub par players they had whilst adding star players in key positions, with the coaching from Howe, has made Newcastle go from relegation scrap to fighting for European spots in one year. I said on twitter when asked for a controversial prediction at the start of the season: 'Newcastle will finish above Man United' and judging by what I've seen so far this season, I'm still 99% sure I'll be proven right

There's a difference between spending money just for the sake of it & spending it intelligently. Every single transfer was done perfectly. Even if it was buying Wood as during that period we had no fit strikers. Every club bought in players & spent ridiculous money but under one year, Newcastle from being a very defensive side who used to sit very deep are now the squad with the most high pressing intensity, who are scoring goals whilst conceding the fewest goals this season. It's not money alone, it's also tactics & management by the coaching staffs. How Eddie Howe managed a Newcastle team that were certain of being relegated last season to top 6 (currently) this season.

Look at the old greats Cloughy or Robson, they always told their teams a player should always have two or three options when they have the ball, absolute basics. Looking at us now we have that, players want t get on the ball. Under Bruce and at times Rafa, players didn't seem keen to get on the ball and the only option was often to hoof it or to play the obvious pass which was easy to read. Eg. a RB should always have an option at RW, CM, CB and even the keeper, CB should have an option of his fellow CB, closest FB, CM etc etc. Why any footballer wouldn't want to get on the ball is crazy, it's what they love doing surely, sad to see some days so devoid of belief that no one offers options.

Glad someone actually went into depth and all aspects of this transformation because let’s not forget, we still have allot of players that have been at Newcastle for years who he’s also help improve on the pitch. Just spending money alone doesn’t help a squad struggling, they have to be the right fit and have the right mentality. It’s easy for already Established teams to spend big on 1 player because they are just adding to an already amazing squad, we don’t have that privilege so for the “oh it helps when they’ve spend millions” people out there, give your head a wobble and actually look at all contributing factors instead of being a narrow minded media sheep 👍🏻

People go on to say they spent alot of money BUT most importantly they spent it wisely, before they buying players who were championship quality and they have players like Matt Ritchie, Murphy who are that quality, with old owner they couldnt spend anything much, now they got a new owner which can give them a brighter future, Joelinton when he was bought was a striker but no doubt in my mind in his entire career he was played out of position, because as BTB midfielder he is an absolute unit

We played great 2nd half of last season without Pope, Botman, or Isak. Worth noting as well that Trippier, Burn, Pope, and Targett are all 15m or less. The difference is we were spending nothing, and now we are spending something, and people still say we are good because of the money. Our record signing has hardly played, Bruno has been injured, ASM injured, Wilson injured, Shelvey injured. It's the dressing room and playing for the badge. And less players played out of position.

Ah, good old JJ Bull - part incisive, tactically-astute analyst, part excited, football-mad child. Great video, thanks for covering The Toon! I think the secret is we’re spending well to build a team/squad with a real sense of purpose and identity. Of course, it’s easier to see the progress when the starting point is so low. Breaking into the top six for real is going to cost quite a bit - upgrading the attacking players to make the team more ruthless and having enough squad depth to cope with injuries and fixture congestion. I can see us stalling there for a while.

Okay yeah Athletivo Madrid - but still he was on his way out. These players were around the same level as Newcastle. I think it's partley money but they have made some really good purchases. They could of gone mad with it but I think Howe et al. have got the right players not just the best.

He's talking about the most recent game yes but I watch every Newcastle match and the performances now are a world apart from this time last year. 6th at this stage is a good accomplishment. Don't forget there have been a lot of injuries in the first team and they have still played well enough to get good results. The only loss so far this season was a robbery. People talk about the money spent but never mention the lack of money spent for over a decade before that and other top teams are also spending too. Newcastle are becoming very difficult to beat now and that is amazing considering they were basically target practise under Bruce.

The biggest improvement in the squad isn't just money spent but getting individual players playing better, Joelington, Willock, Almiron, Longstaff, Schar for example even Saint-Maximin is playing a different style of football. It's an insult not to give more focus on this, on the work Howe and his staff have put in. Yes we spent a lot of money but we spent very little in comparison to other teams over the last 14 years, we were playing catch up the entire time. We spent that money but the club is still in very good condition financially in comparison to other teams in the league

It took time? A year in football with only one preseason is basically nothing when trying to imprint an identity onto a team! Plus yes a lot of money has been spent but if you look at the core of the team Eddie has transformed them we only need to look at Joelinton to see that along with Miggy! They are effectively playing like new signings making it look like we have bought an entire new team! This time last year if ASM was injured every Newcastle fan would be shitting themselves but now we have faith in a system of players instead of just our best ones! And doing this all in just a year is incredible from Eddie!

200mil is small change to a premier League club of that size that haven't spent in God knows how many years. Howe deserves respect for spending it well on players who work with the way he wants to play. A lot of managers who have never had that money before could have spunked it on a couple of big names that flop. Howe is doing a great job just like he did at Bournemouth on a lesser budget.

I don’t think there’s a team in the league that wouldn’t have improved if they spent £123 million in 2 weeks in January. Newcastle’s saving grace last season wasn’t the money anyway, it was the fact that they were losing games when no one else around them were picking up points. Think they’d lost about 6 games in a row at one point last season and they were still only 4 points behind the team above them.

We've been pressing teams with Wilson, ASM/Murphy, Almiron, Joelinton and Willock/Longstaff most of the season, all of whom are Ashley-era players! To be fair, we sat back in the second half of that Liverpool match and against City after we went up 3-1. They were good decisions because our defensive form drops of a cliff after around 70 minutes and we would have been very exposed, but the fact that we gave both teams so many attacks was probably the reason why we conceded, rather than high pressing.
