Why Newer Super Mario Bros. DS Is The GREATEST New Super Mario Game- Ft. Tricky Nick: BEST 2D Mario

It has been a long time since we have gotten a 2D Mario game. But during our crazy trip to Canada, Tricky Nick and I took a look at one of the coolest games being Newer Super Mario Bros DS! Released on Christmas in 2017, this is truly a gift to the Mario series. It incorperates many of the best aspects from the series, even from 3D Mario games and Mario Kart. The question is, what exactly makes it so incredible? And will Tricky Nick and Demeech be able to leave Canada?

The reason most of the bosses in the game aren't changed, is because Newer Team found out that main code that handles the bosses in the game is literal spaghetti code that is impossible to manage and modify without it breaking.

Jokes aside, I knew about this game and I agree... this Newer and the Wii Newer are excellent. They are my counter-argument to all the people who piddle on the 'formulaic' mario games from the Wii and Wii U. I would not call this the best 2D Mario game, but that's only because Newer SMWii exists.

It shows there was no need for NSMB to be so boring as it wasn't that the engine severely limited it to basically an original SMB remake with ugly graphics and heavily reduced difficulty. It was that they chose to make it like that. Playing Newer and seeing what they have done with their 64DS hack makes me realise Nintendo were so lazy back then - they could have made a 64 sequel and a 2D game that would be worth playing decades on like the originals and just didn't bother to put the money and dev time in. And people say Nintendo hadn't gone to hell at that point 😢

Oh wow! Forget the talk of difficulty level... Creating a Mario game that feels good and authentic is something even Nintendo struggles with sometimes. This is one of, if not THE best Mario game in terms of level design. It's so intuitive, and it's not even official. That's saying something!

This is so true. It's a shame more people won't get to play this and see just how good it is. If it was released it would be 10/10 all round at the time and go down with the originals as one of the best games ever made and worth playing decades on. It's hard to express how good this is and how much it feels like a genuine Mario release and the actual sequel that World should have got on the DS instead of the lazy boring cashgrab we did get. I even think their 64DS hack (Another Super Mario 3D) would have gone down as an all time classic had it been released instead of the 64 remake on DS. It is only greed and laziness that stopped Nintendo using the 64 engine to make a sequel for DS back then and that attitude was through the whole of the company sadly.

I am very impressed with what they managed to do with a DS game, and in terms of level design, Newer Team simply can't be beat! I just love it when creators put a remarkable level of effort into what they craft, and Newer DS is a shining example of that. However, when push comes to shove, I'd still call Newer Wii the greatest Mario game of all time. I do find its level design to be more impressive, (same with New Wii to New DS), on top of Newer Wii getting credit for all the world themes shown here, and that the game is overall longer and more challenging. Don't forget 4-player multiplayer, too! Not quite the greatest Mario game of all time, but Newer DS is certainly up there.

I think it's weird how you criticize the NSMB series (specifically NSMB2) for having the same world themes when Newer Ds in fact, reuses most of it's world themes from Newer Wii: -Goldleaf Plains is litteraly Goldwood Forest -Crystal Sewer is a Mashup of Soggy Sewers and Crystal Caves -Dorrie's Island is inspired by Yoshi's island, and the half beach half forest theme is inspired by NSMB2 -Pumpkin Boneyard shares the same name as the Newer Wii world -Moonview Glacier's graphics are taken from Newer Falling Leaf -Lunar Space is directly inspired by Starry Skies -Cirrus Heaven is meant to be a spiritual successor to Sakura Village, and bases it's aesthetics of NSMBU's 7-4 -Koopa Country's first half is somewhat unique (even though the tileset is directly taken from Newer Wii) but the second half is just a Lava World I don't even think it's necessarily a bad thing i just don't understand how it's fine when that game re-uses world themes but not when another does

Taking the development conditions of one game but not the other os inherently unfair, you should either take both into account or neither I decide to take neither into account because if there's something that i don't enjoy about a game, knowing the development conditions won't make it any better, being aware that Newer Wii is a non-profit mod doesn't make the level design any better.

The power ups and bosses are different from each newer game and the music is also different granted some tracks are reused but not to the extent of the new games. Yes ds worlds come from newer Wii but there are several worlds in newer Wii not in newer ds that still make it stand out in terms of world themes already mentioned different power ups and bosses. Ds worlds missing from newer Wii Mushroom peaks Japan village Mini mega island Sky city Bomb cliffs There might be more but newer ds does not have these worlds

Miny mushroom is way more misunderstood than the blue shell. You can only take one hit , the the trade off is you can bounce off enemies and float across the stage. You can get across the whole stage just bouncin’ from enemy to enemy.

Good video. I just beat the game. Unfortunatly I played it on an emulater online. It ran horribly but not so bad that the character moved slowly or that the frame rates ruined it. Honestly it really felt like super mario bros 3 all over again with the difficulty but I hope that in their next mod, it will have mostly newer worlds and new power ups. Lastly I liked what the final boss had to offer.

Just got done completing this game and I would agree that it’s fantastic. I will, however, very much disagree on cloudbolt chasm. I dislike that level and found it frustrating. That and 7-7 were the only levels I disliked. But other than that I would say that this hack knocks the new super Mario bros formula out of the park. It genuinely made a new super Mario bros game feel new, which is more than Nintendo has done.

They were garbage at the time and garbage even more so now. I got nsmb imported from America on release and played it through and it was cool it was Mario but it was SO SO disappointing. It's Mario like they tried to make the games as boring as possible. Newer DS is the same engine but a game that actually is awesome so Nintendo could easily have created something worthy of the SMB name, but they chose not to. Then used the same cash grab template over and over for good measure, with fans gaslighting themselves and each other that each successive game was great until they eventually accepted that no, they were not. NSMB Wii is the only 2D Mario I have never completed as it was just so so so boring as it felt like the same game as DS.

Go back and play NSMB and you will see it is a boring game. It's literally the most basic boring Mario Maker quality with the difficulty all through the game equal to a Kirby game. A mainline Nintendo release should do more than a basic level editor can.

I have to disagree that Newer Super Mario Bros is better than Nintendo's NSMB games. That being said, Newer Super Mario Bros is a really cool hack, and the upgraded Koopa shell and DKC mine cart levels look great.

In my newer super mario bros wii is the best one but only b a little because newer super Mario bros da is also amazing, and also newer super Mario bros ds has one new boss fight the king boo in world 5 boo mansion, and newer super Mario bros wii offers hard mode after you beat the game 100% it’s nothing special but it’s better than in newer ds where you get nothin, but I understand why do you say newer ds is the best one I just don’t think it’s the best because of newer wii, that’s until newer wii deluxe is launch, and also you should play this new super Mario bros wii hack called super Mario superstars, you will love it, to me it compites with newer wii as the best new super Mario bros wii hack.

i dont rly like its presentation, the enemies, powerups and tilesets are from nsmbu but they look rly bad cos of the low resolution. And nsmbds did have 3d models for enemies and items, only some were sprites. But i still rly like it. Fun fact: theres a blue koopa in the mario vs luigi mode
