The personality swap between bubbles and blossom could be chalked up to magical girl tropes. The main magical girl (usually the pink or red one) tends to be the more naive, clumsy and air headed character, while the blue magical girl tends to be the more reserved, beautiful, and elegant character.

Fun fact: This show was actually pretty damn popular in Latin America. Not only because anime and Cartoon Network was so damn popular here so an anime version of a CN cartoon was obviously an instant hit, but also because the Latin American dub actually got all the voice actors from the original show to reprise their roles (with the sole exception of Buttercup's) so people had a bigger sense of familiarity with the show even if the writing wasn't stellar.

I loved how they translated some stuff from the original show into the anime version, like how Blossom was a comic fan, so in the anime she was obsessed with superhero manga.
@Broomer52 Жыл бұрын
They translated everything really well because they kept every character exactly how they were but with the addition of Magical Girl tropes. Bubbles is very girly and innocent so in the anime she’s also very into fashion and a little ditzy but more perspective than people give her credit, Buttercup is a Jock who loves fighting and so the anime just cranked that up to where she’s practically allergic to girly things, Blossom is a nerd who keeps the team together so they make her smarter than the others but also a typical otaku type character. Mojo was already a classic anime parody with his posing, over explaining, giant robots and weird speech pattern so they just made him more of a walking Anime trope with a modern update. Gang green Gang remain a group of delinquent mutants, Him is the greatest evil in the world and he remains weird and dresses feminine like but with a lot more color to suit the anime. It’s Honestly a perfect anime adaptation.

I wouldn’t say Blossom and Bubbles switched personalities, I would say they just changed Blossom’s personality. The way Bubbles acts in Z is very reasonable for how her original character might act at that age. A very fashion conscientious girl whose perpetually positive attitude led to her popularity. Blossom on the other was definitely dumbed down. While it’s not unreasonable to say she might be boy crazy at that age, the change was far too all encompassing.
@lionqueen145 Жыл бұрын
It would have been interesting if she was the typical kid that is always slacking but still is the best off the class or showing her little by little getting smarter, more strategic and being better leader. Something like she act dumb and treated it like a game at first but as the time went on she started seeing it more seriously showing that when she put her mind on something she can be really smart. That way she could still have the vibes of the dizzy sometimes clumsy protagonist with the smart and leader side of Blossom.

There is actually a pretty good reason for why Blossom and Bubbles had their personalities switched. The bubbly ditz archetype is just seen as more protagonist-like in a lot of Japanese girls media. I remember back in the day when they were attempting to bring MLP:FiM over to Japan and they had pre-airing variety special to help introduce the audience to the series. The presenters were actually surprised that Twilight was the protagonist and not Pinky Pie. I wonder if the Blossom/Bubbles personality swaps have anything to do with cultural differences in how their designs would be interpreted. Bubbles' blond pigtails have an association with a "bubbly airhead" personality to western audiences that doesn't necessarily translate to Japanese audiences, while Blossom's big red ponytail might've led those audiences to read her as a "genki girl".
@lolita960 Жыл бұрын
Sorry but what is a “genki girl”
@DCreed013 Жыл бұрын
@@lolita960 "Genki" means lively or energetic. "Genki girl" is a fairly common Japanese character archetype that's an energetic and nice, but typically airheaded girl. I do find it odd that they'd interpret Blossom as a genki girl though because I'm fairly certain that there's no "standard" design for that archetype, it's purely personality. I think it's more likely that they thought Blossom's original preppy smart girl personality was unbecoming of a main protagonist in a magical girl show. For magical girl shows, the leader is typically a relatable everygirl who has a lot of courage or kindness or something. The "smart" character is always a side character, sometimes not even on the magical girl team itself, but a supporting non-magical girl. They probably just thought that Blossom's original personality wasn't relatable enough to be a magical girl team leader, which is...sad.

I think you got it right. In japanese culture, blonde girls especially with twin tails are considered almost as an "ohime" or princess figure. In which they are more fashionably conscious and attuned to the fashion trends. Meanwhile, bright red hairs are often viewed as this borderline cheery, and sometimes, tomboy-ish vibe. Tbh, the hair color change and the personality swap was most likely to appeal to anime characterization. In Japan, girls with red hair are usually portrayed as wild, energetic and sometimes foolish troublemakers while blondes are more exotic and the foreign exchange student who becomes the loved head of the class. It's probably why Blossom and Bubbles personalities seemed switched, since it was either that or make Bubbles a redhead with Blossom being blonde. It's most likely why Miss Bellum is blonde in the show as well, to make her exotic and interesting to Japanese audiences.

Hearing about how their origin story had to be kind of changed around to fit within Japanese culture honestly just has me appreciate that stuff like Astro Boy exists and the hoops that must have been jumped through for him to be allowed to be created by a single father only to be abandoned and then subsequently adopted by another scientist. (And is probably why in some versions Astro Boy has his own robot parents made for him.)

Exactly!! It's quite sad how single parents are looked at over there in Japan. The change they made for the Professor makes sense, since how they look at single parents is one of the reasons they have fake families for hire. I remember watching documentaries and some CDawg videos about this. Apparently, socially, single moms and dads are NOT allowed to attend family events in Japan and this will lead to the child being heavily bullied. So, the single parents will save money to hire someone to act as the child's second parent at those events. Most of those agencies were made for only that reason and it's sad. The stories/reasonings behind some of the founders is sweet, in terms of them wanting to help those parents, but they shouldn't have to hire someone to live a fake life.

This doesn't entirely make sense tho - Card Captor Sakura was made not that long before PPGZ for the exact same demographic, and the titular character had a single parent.

@@catatoblob8598 Yeah, but if I recall, the older brother and his friend were supposed to be gay, but they didn’t make them in either the dub or both the dub and the sub (it’s kind of like how C dramas and novels will not allow certain things from overseas or out of their country). Things change overtime and the success of PPGZ probably had the single parent thing happen more. For example, more programs / stations allowed more gay characters in their anime which eventually led to them having a lot of BL (with some GL). But, marrying the same sex is still illegal in Japan, until recently in Kyoto and only Kyoto can you marry in same sex. It’s kind of similar with Kdramas, since you can find a lot of BLs, but it’s illegal to a certain degree to be such in SK. They’re more lenient on allowing certain things in their media before real life, from what I’ve noticed.
@catatoblob8598 Жыл бұрын
@@VolvaBecky CCS had a lot of classical CLAMP themes that were adapted out of the anime to make it more appealing for children. That includes any direct references to Touya's relationship with Yukito, and Rika's engagement to their teacher, but also includes Clow Reed's more esoteric motivations and convoluted reincarnation plan. But despite all these changes, Sakura's dad's single parent status wasn't changed. If you consider Japan's most iconic children's anime, protagonists from singe parent households are relatively common. Ash Ketchum lived with his mother and his father effectively out of the picture. Same thing applies to Yugi Muto's father (although Yugioh's anime is debatably not for children). Ran and Conan (Detective Conan is absolutely targeted for children, even though it debatably shouldn't be) lives with Ran's effectively single father. And then, if you look at big name anime targeted towards teenagers, (DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, BNHA, KnY), protagonists with 1 or 0 effective parents are the norm, not the exception. Even if you look at other anime adapted from English media, Sophie still grew up with a single Stepmother in Howl's Moving Castle, even though many other aspects of the plot was changed. However you think single parents are viewed in Japan, trying to say that anime adapts out single parents because of stigma is just incorrect.

You can tell that they had to jump around a lot, since other versions of Astro Boy made him have parents, and scrap the single parent storyline entirely. I remember watching some episodes of the original, but it didn't catch my attention as much as CUTE MAGICAL GIRLS, ROBOT PUPPY, CATCHY OPENING SONG AND BRIGHT COLORFUL ANIMATION, lmao. 12:30 The answer to this question could very well be related to another of anime's most used tropes, the ones involving _missing_ _parents._ In most anime, the protagonist lacks 1 or both parents either because they're dead, missing or just conveniently never seen nor mentioned. Now, I was not aware that men in Japan are culturally obligated to remarry after their wife passes but with this in mind, it is now impossible for the professor to play the single parent role for the PPGs in this trope, and if he had a wife, the girls would no longer fit into this trope at all. This is likely where they decided to replace Professor Utonium with Ken... Except as mentioned in the video that's not gonna fly either. The compromise solves all of this, the Professor Utonium gets a wife, Ken gets to be their son, the PPGs are no longer related to the professor and as long as their actual parents never show up in any capacity, the _missing_ _parents_ trope remains intact.

It’s worth noting that the English dub for the PowerPuff Girls anime was recorded in Vancouver, Canada instead of Los Angeles hence why none of the original voice actors didn’t return due to reasons (cost, it’s a dub, and Canadian Laws (even though Tara Strong is Canadian)), although in the Latin American Spanish dub, most of the Mexican voice actors from the dub of PowerPuff Girls return to reprise their roles except for Buttercup and Him’s Mexican voice actors.

Something I found really weird about both the English and Latin America dubs for PPGZ is that the girls (who are teenage girls resembleling the PPGs) share the same original names for both their civilan AND super heroine form! And since their hair stayed the same, won't people realized that these girls and super heroines are the same characters? Huh? 🤔🤨
@KremBotop Жыл бұрын
The most fascinating thing about PPGZ's Latin Spanish dub is that Blossom / Bombón's VA already had plenty of experience doing VA work in Magical Girl series by that point, having voiced Sakura Kinomoto and Sailor ChibiMoon. So going from the original PPG to PPGZ was a natural fit for her.

And I loved it, my first introduction into magical girl anime too. Also I loved what they did with HIM, making HIM the main villain was awesome.

Another possible angle for the Utonium character: lean into that obligation-to-marry thing by showing him trying to find a wife, failing for various reasons, and still taking good care of his daughters in spite of that. Maybe on occasion the girls could try to set him up with someone (the original trio certainly tried that a time or two), but at the end of the episode be appreciative of their still-single dad and let him know they're not in any rush to get a mom.
@moodycowcrafts4862 Жыл бұрын
Professor Utonium's role could have been like the mc of Usagi drop - but with a magical girl twist That would have brought more 'everyday life drama' to the show, like local busybodies constantly trying to set him up because 'those girls need a mother', and really hit some emotional notes as to the girls feeling out of place in society for having a single dad. It would have made an anime version of the 'heros league' episode really pop as there tends to be a strong gender divide in the homes (at least in anime/drama shows I've seen) - which melds well with the 1950's american household they always seemed to apply to parents in these types of western cartoons. PPGZ never hit it with me - the girls situation/personalities didn't click and the interaction with the villains seemed really inconsequential (i remember finding them just stopping the action to go eat parfait really weird in one episode)

18:30: I believe this is an unfortunate result of this being a Kodomo anime rather than a full blown Shounen or Shoujo, Kodomo anime are aimed at really young pre-schoolers and elementary school children like first and second graders. Of all the four large "demographics" in Japan, Kodomo gets the least animation budget while seemingly Seinen gets the most. But it's still kinda insane, since this was (as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong) the same team that brought us Futari wa Pretty Cure, whose violent content and action setpieces I'd say are more in line with the western PPG, but apparently they had to tone it down after parents in Japan kept complaining about how all that punching and kicking was easy for children to mimic, since the team wanted more physical violence than stock footage magical attacks. I don't know if that went anywhere, I haven't watched Precure since HeartCatch, but modern Kamen Riders also use more guns and ranged weaponry rather than physical violence, so probably Toei had to concede a bit to the parents.

I wouldn’t say nobody. I was the right age when this first aired and was leaked all over KZbin. I was already a fan of PPG, but the anime version meant A LOT to me as a kid. I was around the same age as the girls in PPGZ were and I connected with them way more than when they were 5 year olds. Also, I think you’re confusing Aniplex and Toei Animation roles in the production. Toei is the animation studio and should be the ones held most accountable for the quality. Aniplex was a producer but I don’t believe they have any creative control. They’re more of a *merchandise, distribution and licensing* company. So grouping Aniplex stuff under the same banner as Toei Ani is misleading. (Ex. FMA was produced and is distributed by Aniplex, but both the 2003 and Brotherhood anime were animated by Studio Bones.)

I loved this show so much!! To some extent, I _still_ love it. It had its weirder moments but it was genuinely so cute and you can see how much love was put into it. The 2016 reboot will never compare to this 🫶
@VolvaBecky Жыл бұрын
Exactly! One could kind of brush off its weirder / bizarre moments as typically Anime moments and it made the show really fun. I never knew about the reboot until this video and somehow my eyes feel like they need bleach for seeing what he showed on screen for it..... What did they do to PPG!?

I don't think Blossom actually changed in personality as much as youre describing. Yeah, shes more airheaded, but shes still got the same leader mentality. Bubbles is still airheaded and clueless at times. She was literally bouncing everywhere not long into meeting her. In fact, I'd rather her food motivated than how they treated her in the reboot because of how they viewed her originally. If anything, I'd actually argue the only one of the trio that oddly changed*the most* is Buttercup. Because *shes* the most level headed. In the anime, she's been shown to be more of a leader with a disposition of, while can be pissed, shes often calmer than the others. She has, on record, snapped the others out. Radically different from the original bc that kinda got so mad she had an episode dedicated to it

I’m a 24 year old man and I still remember this show 😂 Honestly it was really good and the openings and endings were bangers! And the transformations and the transformation themes were great. I might have to rewatch it again someday

It's weird hearing how elusive the show was for US viewers, when here, in Uruguay, for a few years cartoon network just transmitted it like a normal show, fully dubbed into Spanish, as well as the og ppg It was never that popular and not too many people watched it a lot, but it was just transmitted like a normal cartoon from what I remember I even had a little McDonald's toy of the dog sidekick and tons of my friends had McDonald's doll versions of the anime ppg themselves that came in happy meals Here it really wasn't elusive at all

Same here in Ecuador, not elusive at all

Wasn't Elusive here. I knew about in America and others have said the same. The episodes were free online.
@Krlytz Жыл бұрын
@@Snow-xd4rv I believe Saber is talking about legal distribution. Of course a lot of anime were available if you went to the "watch anime online free" type of pages, but if you only watched TV or bought physical copies of your series it probably wasn't so easy to find

Personally, I will always hold this show near and dear to my heart, a little bit cause technically, this was the first magical girl anime I ever watched lol As an adaptation, it could have been so so worse, but they took the time to make it appealing to the japanese audience, while staying as true as they can to the original. So its different enough to be its own thing, and I think thats what an adaptation should aim for. And also, the designs for the characters, especially the main girls, have always been my favorite parts of the show!!

I'm shocked hearing that people had a hard time finding this show lol. I first discovered it in 2008 on youtube when I was a kid. They used to have the entire series on here in 3 parts for each episode (both sub and dub versions.) It was also easy to find on anime websites like Crunchyroll (back when it was a pirate site.) Considering that the show came out in 2006, that's not that long of a time jump.

I watched this when I was 10 and I liked it waaaay better than the original mostly because I felt that the original talked down to me. I even watched it on KZbin and I remember how much him creeped me out and I forget what episode but the one where he took all their weapons and blossom used her bow as a weapon instead was super cool to me as a kid.

Powerpuff Girls Z used to show on boomerang for me as a kid and i loved it would run to watch it everyday at 8am on the dot on weekends. This show has a special place in my heart so I was surprised that not many people knew about it. It sure was popular in my circle of friends back in middle school.

I remember the show, me and my mom used to watch it together. But I didn’t know that it had an anime adaptation, but it makes sense because a lot of shows have lots of different versions that are the same thing but more different but I see why this is technically well known, and therefore this show still touches my heart to this day 😊❤

This show was so foundational to my early artistic development. At 12, i used to sit at my dads computer, hold a piece of paper to the screen, and trace over the transformation scenes to color them in while I watched the episode. Its really special to me and both the anime and the og show are so fucking nostalgic to me in different ways. The og show was a simple comfort show but the anime came alone just when I started getting into serialized story telling rather then episodic. I liked how every episode progressed into the next to some degree and how there was an over arcing plot. It was at this same time I started enjoying Magical Girl Anime in general like Tokyo Mew Mew so I dove into the cultural differences pretty well. I liked the characters being closer to my age and their clothes were to pretty 😭

I remember watching all of the sub version before YT took it down so I ended up binging on the dub which I thought was the greatest thing ever as a tween. It definitely satisfied my 12 year old self who was just beginning to get into anime, more specifically magical girls
@sparking023 Жыл бұрын
I've never come to think about it but the differences between the OG and the Anime Adaptation kind of make sense, especially with some extra years of anime and manga under my belt. Like Blosoms being more aloof, that's your typical maho shojo protag right there, while Bubbles being a little more "seiso", to borrow the term, also fits a certain character trope. And then there's Buttecup rocking the tomboy looks as always, no wrong moves were done there. It would also explain the lack luster action scenes and the loose plot. Sailor Moon is the hallmark of maho shojo but I would say PPFGZ is closer to Precure, which is also insanely popular in Japan. That said, even if the writing felt pretty hollow, I would say it was a pretty good success, at least here in Brazil and temptively Latin America. We have a big love for anime in here, and in our case the same voice actors of the original PPFG came in to voice the anime, so the sentiment of nostalgia and aesthetics also helped a lot in it's reception. Plus it was promoted as a spin-off so nobody was up at arms with most of the changes. In addition, I would love to see the outcomes if the Powerpuff Girls were put through a typical shonen filter instead. Maybe we would get something closer to Kill La Kill lol

Okay, that concept art at 7:50 looks great! And yes, I'm one of the few people who actually likes Powerpuff Girls Z. As for the actual show, Bubbles and Buttercup's weapons make sense, but Blossom's does not! But I do like the girls outfits. Especially the vests with the finger-less gloves, which give them sort of a punk style compared to other magical girl outfits. Also, my favorite PPGZ moment is when Buttercup is breathing fire after the Rowdyruff Boys flipped her skirt. "Get back here terror tots!" still cracks me up!

Oh my god, I remembered first encountering the anime when I was in primary school! I still remember the openings and endings… It was hard to find? I remembered watching some of the episodes on KZbin back in the day. I was intrigued by it and went to watch it later on and I actually really liked it. Not as good as the original but a solid show. (Watched it subbed since the dub had some plot holes and the music was better.) My personal favourite plot was Bubbles/Miyako’s romance with Cody/Takaaki. Thought it was really sweet and was so afraid that it ended with a cliffhanger and not revisited in the future but luckily they did. They were really cute together. I completely forgot that Blossom in the anime was an airhead compared to the original! I personally never had an issue with it (her sweets-loving can get a bit annoying though) since it’s a different interpretation but I can see why people don’t like it. I think I need to revisit this for a bit…
