I have 4 Mercedes, 2010 s550 80k miles, 2013 s550 70k miles, 2010 s400 hybrid, 60k miles and 2014 e550 coupe 30k miles. They all look, feel, drive and perform like brand new cars, zero issues, few oil changes, couple pads and tires, nothing else, They don’t make cars like that in Detroit nor Japan. Hondas are the worst cars I have ever owned with the most recalls and extensive repairs, never owned a toyota or BMW and never will. Scotty, I will never need to visit your shop unless I have a toyota or honda. 1 synthetic oil change on a mercedes every 10k miles is cheaper than 3 honda oil changes. No need to take it to the dealer, lots of mercedes specialty shops have much better mechanics.

All cars have symptoms some cheaper than others. Buy what you can afford. I’ve owned my 2009 cls 550 for almost 10 years and the car runs like a champ. If you don’t keep up with maintenance on any car it can lead to you spending. People don’t buy mb for nothing it’s the quality and engineering that makes the car a superior drive. Drive what ever you like just do your research

Have had a Mercedes since 2008, brand new... the 3 times I had problems with it in 10 years, I fixed it myself with a friend, but it was mostly burnt fuses and electronic problems. Now, the car still runs great several miles later. You really just need to have a really good mechanic as friend, or learn some mechanics and take very good care of your car to cut your bills. If you love cars, that sacrifice shouldn't be a problem. When I'm behind the wheel of that car, I feel so alive... and that Mercedes smell, is really nice. I personally know many taxi driver friends who have run their Mercedes cars into the ground at over 999,999 miles, and they took really good care of their Mercedes. You just need to do your research, and not let problems escalate until they go past the point of no return.

A vast majority of nearly decade old high performance sports cars are going to have problems; especially if not meticulously maintained. As for the longevity of Mercedes my buddy's first car was an 86 S with 300k miles and still running beautifully. It can go both ways.

Having owned a Merc CLS (just like the one in this video) from it being 4 years old to 6 years old, I can say he's totally correct. Mine had literally thousands of pounds worth of faults and spent lots of time in the dealership being repaired in the 2 year period I owned it... The window regulator broke, the turbo 'ran hot' and had to be fixed, several of the parking sensors failed, the engine leaked oil, 3 of the 4 air suspension struts failed (almost £2000 / $3000 repair bill for each one), the sat nav broke, the sunroof kept sticking (despite several repair attempts), the passenger seat belt warning kept coming on randomly (dealership said it was a known problem and difficult to fix permanently), the engine would once a month or so idle/shake really badly when stopped at traffic lights etc. etc. etc. Fortunately I bought the car with an official Used Mercedes-Benz Warranty from the MB dealership which covered the ridiculous repair costs. Safe to say I'm no longer a fan of Mercedes. I still think the original CLS is a lovely looking car, but whenever I see one on the road I think it's probably headed to the repair shop!

Colin M My family has a 2011 C300 Sports Sedan and the only problems I remember it having was the sunroof sticking and a low beam going out plus a nail in a tire. All of which only needed to be "fixed" once. My Mustang on the other hand, I have a bit of a love hate relationship with. Ive had it in the shop 3 or 4 times for repairs in about 2 or 3 years now. First for electrical problems, then a tranny fluid leak, and now the front end is shot. The love part of the relationship is that I get to daily drive a classic car that isnt an ugly rust bucket. And I even get to have a V8 that gets better gas milage than the merc in the video believe it or not. And I even had it radio swapped.

buying used is like getting married to some ex hooker who has std's and cancer, i always hear that merc overengineer their engines yet all engines give up after 200k, gas engines that is, some very old ones can last up to 1mil, that's in kilometers not miles, problem is they are slow af, 0-60 is not happening slow leasing cars is the only sensible thing to do atm, even if the car is japanese, unless you treat you cars like a pet, they are just means of transportation, no more no less

Scotty I've got a BMW 520d from brand new, and it's currently got 200k miles and still going strong, with just regular service which I do myself. Nothing ever went wrong with that car. I guess reliability also has a lot to do with how you drive and how frequently service. PS. Previously I had a Merc E Class, that went past 260k miles, when I got bored and sold it off... That too never had a problem.

Walmart usually has 5 qt jugs of Mobil 1 0w40 full synthetic on sale for $19.95. I get a genuine MB oil filter for $15. I do my own oil changes. Oil changes on my GL63 cost less than $55 bucks. The oil filter is on the top of the motor. Easier to change the filter on my benz than on my jeep. I buy OEM quality Zimmerman brake Rotors and Textar pads. The cost is not much more than quality brake parts on a Toyota. My GL63 is the nicest car I've ever driven. I enjoy working on my cars and hunting around for bargains on OEM parts. I also have a 2002 SL500 it drives like brand new. Apart from maintenance only problem I had was a leaking fuel pump. I got an OEM Bosch Fuel pump for $56 on Rock auto (last one they had). Replaced the fuel filter at the same time $20 Bucks. If you buy cars to beat them into the ground then get a banged-up old Toyota. If you baby your cars and enjoy taking care of them and hunting down reasonably priced parts, why not drive a really nice Benz

Definitely, a Lexus LS460. Even the new Toyota Avalons arent too bad. At least here in the states, I think many folks are under the impression that any MB you buy is a luxury car (1980'e mindset)...this is definitely not the case as their quality has declined over the years (probably since the late 80's /early 90's when MB was 'under the gun' to be more cost competitive in a global market), unless you are buying the AMG Models which definitely cost a premium over standard models.

Honda may be third, but it is the cheapest to maintain. Repairs on a Honda are a fraction of what it costs to do things on a Toyota and especially a Lexus. My boss has a Lexus and it it about 5 years old. It has had far more issues then my 2001 Accord which has four times as many miles on it. And everything still works in the Honda, from the sun roof to the cruise control. My friend also has a Lexus and he has spent more on repairs in a year then I have for the life of my Accord. Lexus is a good car, but certainly not the cheapest to maintain.

My Jaguar is a little peculiar, but I do my own work, and I'd never go without one now.....he's right, for the average person you better just stick to your basics and let somebody else keep ripping you off. Here's a tip, buy a parts car to practice on first so you can be confident when you do the fix on your daily driver. Accident reclaims are best for this.

Toyota = Jeans and T-shirt Mercedes = Suit Jeans and t-shirts are cheap, easy to clean, can be folded and last a long time. Suits are expensive, dry clean only, vulnerable to moths, and must be stored specially. Many professionals take on the costs and risks of suits because they're worth the class. Scotty works hard, and lives on a budget. He wears jeans and a t-shirt because they work out best for him. There's no reason for him to wear a suit. Other men wear a suit because it displays class and professionalism for the job they do. The problem is that too many people want to wear suits and and expect the cost and maintenance to be the same as jeans and a t-shirt.

My feelings are not all mechanics know how to work on them. I have a 14 year old CLK500. I change the oils, tires, Brakes basic stuff like that. I purchased this car brand new in late 2004. (2005 year model) it's never been in a Mercedes Benz dealership. EVER! Scotty, if you can work on one. Stop taking them in to charge people money for something you can do. It's insane to take a used Benz to a dealership for maintenance, when an independent German auto repair shop will almost always do the job for less than half the price 2. With Ebay, most Benz parts nowadays are so widely available that they can be bought for not much more than Toyota or Nissan parts

There is no Mercedes in Germany you pay 1.000€ for the small service aside a McLaren or some AMGs. These days a freakin Skoda Fabia costs as much as a Golf or an B-Classe for a small service! Grumpy ol' Boot I think it's rather that in the US the dealerships can be more "creative" in the money they charge. In Germany there is a regulation and the margin is at most 10€ difference between dealers for 1 hour. And if in Germany a dealership wants money from you only for diagnostics, you look them in the face and say: "Really? For plugging in a tablet and saying 'Mhm' you charge me? Maybe I'll get my services done somewhere else. Or maybe I should buy a different make then." You should always name their biggest rivals. Audi. But really today every make I know has a free diagnostics service. It's called "Kunden Annahme Check" and roughly tranlates to Customer Recieving Check. And if they find nothing, they charge you nothing.

I cant relate to this .. we own a nine year old cls500 and all my dad does is changing the oil and filter in a local shop not the dealer and basically change normal parts like brake pads, faulty lights and this kind of stuff .. its just like any other car really , if u maintain it well it will live for ever ..

I perform maintenance work on Mercedes cars all the time, and nothing presented here is legitimate. The dual spark plugs? I guess it isn't a concern that Ford's 6.2 litre v8 also utilizes 16 spark plugs. Economy from a v8 engine is heavily biased by driving style; too much throttle, even with advanced fuel saving technology, and you'll see 11.9 miles per gallon or less. That 5.0 v8 still beats the average MPG in my Toyota Sequoia (4.7 litre v8, 10.8 mpg average). I honestly cannot understand why a "mechanic" would complain about an on board diagnostics system that performs the diagnostic work for you; the car finding a fault on its own sounds very nice to me. As for buttons on the dashboard, please give them back to me! Too many manufactures use infotainment screens to control everything (Cadillac and Ford for example) or a single button does several different functions (Volvo for example). I am honestly ashamed to own several Toyota trucks because of people like you, there is nothing wrong with Mercedes as they have the most advanced and safe cars on the road (the semi-autonomous W222 S-Class for example). Anyone who takes this man seriously, don't! One of the Mercedes cars I maintain is a 1987 W201 190d with the OM602 2.5 litre diesel engine. Its currently sitting at 320,000 miles with no reliability issues, and that engine has at least 300,000 left in it. A lot of time you are looking at $300+ for just the part. Sure you can go straight to the source for the part and get it for $90, but then it hasn't been approved by MB and stamped with their TM name and part number. So you have a $90 part instead of a $325 part. Then you take the risk of having a shade tree mechanic break 1 of the 19 clips that hold it in place properly and not replace the $4 clip, after replacing the part, instead of the highly trained certified technician (grease monkey) do it for 2 hours (@ $145 per hour - book time not actual). So you have to decide... do you want Scotty to do the job for $150 and end up with 1 broken door clip or have the stealer do it for $615?

Most people can not take a general spark plug video and replace the spark plugs on their 05 Jag, that requires the removal of the intake manifold. All my friends with American cars have problems at 170,000, serious problems like heads cracking, oil pump's randomly stop. I have a 2019 S450, yes they are expensive for regular maintenance. I haven't had any issues with it.. One problem that's a real pain in the neck is say you pick up a nail in the tire and need to get it fixed, if you bring it to your local garage they really don't like doing anything at all on these cars you have to bring it to the dealer. And the dealer won't plug The puncture they sell you a new tire. All in all, I like my S450.

I bought a brand new ML350 back in 03. It had so many little and weird problems which would take too long to explain. When I took it to the stealership (under warranty), I commented to the service rep that Mercs have so many issues and the guy told me "but it has a strong engine". What's the use of having an engine when everything else falls apart? LOL. Either way, I sold the thing when it had a little over 50k miles cause the gas prices were super high and it had problems that I just didn't want to deal with since repairs were so expensive. Years ago I had a 2003 Mercedes CL600 V12, twin turbo, etc. coupe. I spent about $12,000 one year to keep it on the road! The worst feature was the damn Active Body Control system failure and also the the front polycarbonate fenders cracking. The car was a disaster. IMHO, the last good MB made was the 1991 500sec. I wouldn't drive a MB today if it was given to me for free !

Nowadays the only new cars you should shoot for are Japanese cars. Easy to maintain, and super reliable (most of the time) European and German cars are nice, but too difficult to do normal maintainence and parts are horrendously expensive. Domestic cars are nice and super easy to maintain and parts are relatively inexpensive to obtain, but unreliable as hell.

The idea of the extra spark plugs is for emissions, not for better efficiency. It's part of the cars catalyst system. As far as the ambient light goes, you know how we used to find a blown bulb before the age of computers? We looked with our eyes and saw the bulb was blown. Just because the car can tell the filament is blown and the bulb isn't drawing current is no reason to not buy a car. Also just because you're a mechanic who doesn't know how the gas cap opens that doesn't mean you should bash the car either, it means maybe you should recommend the car to someone who is more qualified to do the work.

what people forget, don't want to understand, or simply don't have the capacity to understand, is a Mercedes is NOT for people who are BROKE. They never were. Neither is a Lexus , BMW, Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari, Acura, etc etc etc.... It's not fair to throw Mercedes under the bus for something ALL premium marks do which is OVER ENGINEER. You don't need a Merc to get from point A to point B. And when we sell the car, we get a hell of a lot more for it, then an asian tin box. Why? Because they work! Why do a vast majority of taxi owners buy Merchedes (at least here in Norway)? Because they work! For miles and miles, without trouble. My family owns a taxi company. They have driven Merchedes for years now. Every three years they buy a new one. Three years is about 400000 km (248548 miles), on very bad roads. If you disregard the cost for fuel and the usual service intervalls (oil/filters/fan belts...), the only thing they had to change is the air suspesion a couple of times on one of the cars. Thats it. After 400000 km or 248548 miles, there is still a lot of car left, and they easily get USD 10000 for it. Why? You know why!

I guess it's all about how common the car is and how many independent mechanics are there.In georgia(the country,not the state), Mercedes is very common.mustang and camaro aren't.Now,it would probably cost about 35-40$ to change the oil and the filter on a mercedes,but would cost a lot more to do the same on,say,f150.it's just about the rarity of the parts.So,never judge a foreign car with your standards.

I've driven a 1999 Camry on a long road trip in California about 11 years ago and damn that was a horrible car. It felt like every part cost only 50 cents to make. Everything felt cheap, cheap, cheap! The steering was totally numb and the brakes were the worst ever. There was no feedback in the brakes or gas pedal. I can't believe my cousin paid $20,000 for it. That's a bit of a ripoff. It felt like it cost $1,000! I admit there is some truth when someone told me "Toyotas are for people who hate cars and hate driving."

I just discovered your channel recently, and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this video. I have seen a lot of used luxury cars for what seems like unbelievably good prices. I mean, it's a Mercedes, they're good cars, right? Who wouldn't want one? Just because the price of a used Mercedes is within a regular guy's price range doesn't mean he can actually afford it. I know you catch a lot of flack for your opinion on Mercedes but many of us out there agree with you. IMO, a 100k Mercedes should last longer than a 30k Toyota, but reality doesn't agree.

My own MB salesman tells me this; any MB made between 1999-2005, RUN. Don't take it even if someone gave one to you. 2006-08 are ok, but go for full inspection before purchase. Tread carefully. After laying off Chrysler, post 2009 MB have received well. No horror stories (yet). I have owned 5 Mercedes in my life and never did I experience a problem! As long as you keep up with oil changes and regular maintenance you are good. Bought a 99 S320 with 282,000kms and now almost 400,000kms German cars are by far better than anything out there! Toyota's are piece of shit that will crush like a tin can not to mention they are cheap all the way around!

I knew a mechanic that bought an old 1965 Mercedes that had a bad engine. And he removed the entire drivetrain and installed a Chevy 350 V8 engine & transmission in it & redid everything so it's basically a Chevy under the hood and looks like a Mercedes on the outside. Why did it blow? What a stupid question. Could be many different reasons. The car sat in a barn for two decades and froze up or previous owner ran it low on oil. Most likely owner neglect. Who says they are not worth rebuilding, you? Take the Jaguar inline six and V12 engines, they are world renowned power plants that practically run forever. The Chevy small block is an unrefined dinosaur by comparison. Just because many dummies put Chevy V8's in classic European cars doesn't mean it's a good idea. Plus many of these cars are appreciating in value and having a non-original engine makes it a nearly worthless dud. If you don't know how to repair a European car and think the solution is to lump it with GM junk then stick to old Corvettes and leave these cars alone for the people that appreciate them.

I have to be honest, I've always been a Ford guy, now I drive a Mercedes C300. There are repairs on the Mercedes that I would NEVER imagine making on a Ford that has less than 100k miles. I've put a belt tensioner on it, idler pulley, and an ac condenser. Not terribly expensive repairs, but I can't imagine any of those going out on a Ford with under 100k miles. Ever. I drove a mercury Milan that I bought new for 150k miles with only putting one brake caliper on it. Other than maintenance, that was it for repairs on the mercury (until someone totaled it out) WITH THAT BEING SAID, the Mercedes is Light Years ahead of American cars (Cadillac included) as far as refinement, styling and overall tactile quality. Mercedes are a lot more enjoyable to drive than American rides. So in my eyes I see it as a trade off. I've bought many new American cars, and other than a couple duds (2009 Chrysler town and country, 2002 Mercury Mountaineer) they seem more reliable as far as maintenance and repairs go. But I'm going to find it hard to switch back to American after owning Mercedes for an extended period of time. Don't knock it until you try it!! (I have no desire to own any Japanese car)

I really didn't have any business buying an S430, but I did anyway. It's a 2004 but had been well maintained. (That is absolutely critical with any car.) I've owned it for 2 years and put 25,000 miles on it. There is an ocean of technical support online and many repairs can be done DIY. What is also surprising, is that many electrical type problems can be addressed by performing one of the various reset procedures. When something does go south on you, expect to pay at least twice as much for the repair. And NEVER take it back to the dealer unless you're warrantied. They'll hose the hell out of you with any brand. This was bought as a fun, weekend car. I knew there would be problems going in and never had full expectation of reliability. I might have been off with my expectation. Beyond the reliability, the ride is incredibly smooth, and the interior is made of beautiful, quality materials. Now, contrast that with my wife's Audi A6...rolling mechanical nightmare.

The leather in my Ford started to show cracks and signs of wear very early, where as the Benz interior looks factory new. I'm having a really hard time understanding what this video was for; as far as I can tell, you're telling viewers that there's a lot of buttons, parts are expensive and it's all funny (seriously, the snickering through most of the video was annoying) so don't buy a Mercedes. I'm going to avoid rambling here so I'll get to the point: you buy a big, expensive German-made vehicle (from any German manufacturer) you'll get what you pay for: a lot of toys, a premium ride, high cost of running and a smile on your face. We have wealthy people who buy german engineering and I am one of them and then you have to park them for months at a time while you try to work out whats wrong with them and import the parts from overseas. To service the airfilter on my diesel BMW X5 2 hours labour to change the filter. My toyotas. 5 minutes. Ever had a door handle break on a Toyota? My BMW has broken 2. The best thing though is youtube videos by guys like Scotty that tell you how to do stuff. Guys like him and BMtroubleyou have saved my cars. So Toyotas rock and are so much more economical. If you have the dollars do as he said get a new german beast and get it serviced well and then get rid of it after 5 years. I work on them, drive them and I have a Landrover, a VW and BMWs. and lots of toyotas. So well done to Scotty for having fun and putting information out there. I cant see one point you made in your video that is incorrect and not worth knowing.. Especially those buttons. I used to pick up and deliver cars for people driving 10 different cars a day. Even if you own one you still forget what the buttons mean sometimes. I have 9 cars now. Gregory Kleiman not one point, heh? 1. 11.9mpg - this is way below the average this particular vehicle gets - thrust me, I drive them every day. I can also get a s65 to show 50mpg on the dash. 2. Interesting comments from a guy who owns multiple BMWs. Present and past vehicles from bavaria have ALWAYS had many more buttons than mercedes benz (e36>w202, e39>w210, e38>w140 and etc.) 3. Parts flown in from overseas? Please....this happens in 1 out of 100 inquires. All the major manufacturers have HUGE parts hubs all over the USA and ship overnight for free to their dealers. 4. You keep buying "German engineering" yet you seem to prefer toyota - I am confused.... 5. The diesel air filter on "your X5" is due every 40k - that is about 3 years for the average driver. True, access is not very good but a bmw tech can get it done in less than 20min including resetting the airflow adaptations. Whatever the customer is charged is irrelevant since you state you work on your vehicles anyways. 6. Door handles? Sure, not all cars are perfect and each one of them has its own issues - small or large. My wife's yaris actually popped the release rod that opens the driver's door which certainly made things challenging. Oh, one more for you - the drain tube on the evaporator is too smalls and gets clogged every summer. 7. Toyota and Mercedes are not competitors so this comparison is ridiculous to start with.People buy mercedes because they want one and not because they need a car to get them from point a to point b.THE END.

I run a fleet for a business and a big asian family. This is the combined total for several families sharing two houses and workers for our business. I mentioned the numbers of cars because it gives me a wider experience. I have experience with more cars than most people would have both personally and professionally in jobs I have done. I have probably driven more different types of cars than most people will drive in a lifetime. They are all rubber, steel and plastic in the end. So I think you are right I wont take any with me. Thank Goodness! Do you know how much it costs to get good service in heaven on a Mercedes? :) I am sure there are no dealers in heaven. :)

New or secondhand? Where i am some have different model names. To drive mazda 323 is inpressive. Subarus secondhand can be really good too. Reliability and comfort toyota mark ii with 2.0 litre petrol. People mover toyota hiace diesel auto super custom or commuter van. In aust. Holden commodore station wagons have great feel. Outright reliable fleet car hyundai getz. Honda cars are a little more expensive but have great driving feel. So you need to weigh use age etc. And in this day and age dont foget hybrids. A lot to be said for thinking electric. That is one area i would like more experience in. I would buy a tesla if i had lots of money over a merc. :)
