My dad got an extended warranty from ford in 2008. He bought a F450 6.4 power stroke that year. It saved his wallet BIG TIME. The replaced the engine free and did lots of repair work FREE. and yes he still has the truck 10 years on runs like a damn top!

take the used volvo to a volvo dealership instead of a regular mechanic. those extended warranty policies can be useful in the right circumstances. buy a policy that other dealerships sell and you will get better results getting factory work and those policy writers will make money off of putting a new and expensive stuff in your extremely used car. it only works if you buy one of those cars knowing that it has a problem explicitly addressed in the extended warranty and the maker of the car also does business with the same extended warranty provider. for instance, your local volvo dealership might have business with the same warranty provider as the toyota dealership that sold you the bruised volvo. that warranty service will strike a deal with volvo to replace major components with newer gear and then re-man the old stuff and sell that. but a brand new car? no, those are just worthless. they're just counting on the fact that the buyer will make the payments no matter what so throw a few thousand on top of the loan and it won't make a difference as it lines their pockets. it's the sales game. it probably wouldn't do any good for any car with under 50 thousand miles since you will be able to perform any preventative maintenance needed to make the car last beyond even an extended warranty. if you find a nice used car but it has a lot of miles on it like 150 thousand or more, you might want to consider hedging a bet that the drivetrain will have problems within an extended warranty period and you can get new factory work done on it for a low deductible.

In order to use car shield you pretty much have to get all service done at your dealer which will charge you so much you could replace the engine in 3 years if you drive alot that is. Plus your paying possibly $1000 plus a year for the Car Shield plan. Example 1- You’re driving down the road with 102,000 miles and your timing belt snaps causing detrimental engine failure. Car Shield says well if you didnt replace your timing belt during the recommended interval 100k miles then you’re not covered. The cost to change the timing belt is usually 800-1200 at a dealer depending on complexity of access...VW Beetle requires unbolting and raising engine, you’re lookin at roughly $1200. Car Shield will not cover the maintenance nor the breaking because it wont happen prematurely without something else not being serviced or past years/miles interval. If put on wrong and not done by dealer good luck with that too. The 1200 you spent on Car Shield would of covered the change. Example 2- Brake pad wears too thin and damages rotor, should of changed the brake pads earlier. Thats what they will say. If you go to a dealer every 5k miles and drop $200 on bullshit they recommend and you pay your $100 a month or whatever to car shield and drive down the road and blow a head gasket...you may be covered but the odds of that are so minimal that you’re better off just using the car shield money to keep your car serviced.

When I purchased my first new Toyota Camry back in 2002, the salesman tried to sell my an extended warranty. I told him, "you mean, you want me to pay for something that could fail on the car because it wasn't built right in the first place?" His response was, "Oh, even our Toyota mechanics purchase extended warranties." My response, "Well, now I'm wondering if I should purchase this car at all. Especially if your mechanics feel it's necessary to get the extended warranty. Can't be that good of a car if that's the case!" The salesman never mentioned anymore about an extended warranty as he didn't want to lose a sale. Never had any major issues with that car and traded it in on another Camry after 10 years and 245,000 miles.

And look at THE YEAR you are referencing. 19 YEARS AGO DUDE. Do you understand the amount of computer components within vehicles these days? It’s worth it. Whether your personal one car experience two decades ago proved you right or not. And by the way, car sales are also not what they used to be. The days of the slimy salesmen are over. The days of dealerships "ripping people off" are long gone. These days, because invoices are on the internet and due to increased competition and the dealers making money from Customer Satisfaction Index, they typically make 0 dollars on the sale of a new vehicle. Even on used cars, because the prices are on the internet on third party web sites and dealer sites, they compete and the prices are usually their best price right off the bat. It is morons like Marko that want to make money on videos who play on old fears and old information that no long is really of any concern to a consumer. While one may be ripped off in any industry, the truth is that the car business is one industry where now you are least likely to be ripped off. The amount of scrutiny that an automobile dealer must endure from the public, the FTC, the CFPB and other agencies precludes illegal and immoral business practices. Moreover, dealers attend 20 group meetings and continuing education seminars to be sure they are in compliance with all Federal and State laws. So Marko, you have been served!

jimmy dean it would vary. So let’s say we are losing money on a car I would I get 100 only. If we were making a good profit and it’s 5k I’m pocketing 1500ish. It depends on what the managers are willing to lose to get that car sold obviously if a car stays too long on the dealership it loses value and they start putting discounts on them. Some discounts would leave them on a negative profit. Our dealership stays with used cars for 60 days maxed. New cars can stay there longer but need to be sold before the year ends. If cars stood there after 60 days they would sell them to those cheaper dealerships or auctions

I have been a tech for 22 years, I also worked as a claims adjuster for an extended warranty company here in Tampa Bay *cough PMC cough*. Let me tell you first hand, these warranties are a complete rip off. I could go into details that would literally blow your mind, especially if you’re mechanically knowledgable. I worked there for 4 months and quit because I couldn’t sleep at night seeing how badly people were getting reamed up the bunghole. They target lower income people to begin with, lie about coverage and deny claims based on fine print technicalities. You have to have no soul to work for these companies. Stay the hell away from extended warranty companies, your shop will thank you as well. No one wins except the warranty company. If anyone wants to know the details, I can probably make a video explaining everything in depth.

Critical Thinker some are indeed, but that doesn't mean they're all scams. The rates are so their mechanics can actually make a legitimate salary, not to scam you out of money. The world runs on money. In fact a lot of repairs are covered under warranty unless you buy a subaru wrx, in which case no they're not going to cover anything under warranty because they know how people drive. Yes the cost of maintanence is ridiculous but a lot of people out there can actually afford to go to the dealership all the time and therefore their mechanics get paid like they should. Nothing more to it than that. A lot are scams but some aren't. How would you know they're all the same, you've probably only ever gone to a couple

Another important note: if you did make the mistake of getting an extended warranty, you can cancel it, no matter how long it's been since purchase! Just go back to the dealer and tell them you don't want it anymore, and they're legally obligated to cancel it and refund you the remaining amount.

Yep Chevrolet tried that one with one of their POS Cobalts. Day 1 I called them up and told them that the new car had shifting issues, oh, give it a few weeks until it breaks in and the weird shifting problems will go away...ok fine. First oil change I say hey check the transmission it is a pain to get into 1st and reverse a lot when the car is running, if you turn it off it shifts in and out just fine. Oh, its fine its a new car. I babied it along for about 18 months then I finally call them up and say hey come get this piece of shit I can't get it off my carport it won't go into reverse. They come and get it tear it all down then try and say its how I'm driving, I said bullshit, if that was the case how did the vehicle I traded in have 300k+ on it and not a single transmission issue other than a master cylinder at 239k. So they had the car a month, rebuilt the transmission in it not once but twice because the moron mechanic screwed it up the first time and had no reverse...yeah right, more like found the fucking problem I had from day 1. Finally get the car back, and it shifts about the same, except they must have cranked the shift linkage bolts down as tight as they could because it was hard to shift altogether. Drove it down to Utah and back about a month later and by the time I got back it wasn't going into 1st and reverse again. Traded it in on a different vehicle and never have been back to a GM dealership.

Good video, I used to sell cars back in the day and this is partially true. The dealership I worked at the profit from the warranties went to the finanace managers processing the deal. The salesman only made money on the gross profit of the car, which was 30% on a used car ($2000 gross meant the salesman made $600) which was the front end profit. The Back End Profit was made by the finance manager which includes profits on things like; Gap insurance, Warranties, Service Plans etc, and of course points held over their approved buy rate from the lender they choose. My advice to anyone buying a car is if its new don’t worry about an extended warranty. If its a well taken care of import (Honda, Toyota, Lexus, even Nissan and Infinity) with good records and miles don’t worry about a warranty either. I tell people to buy a warranty on only BMWs, Mercedes, Audis, large diesal and 4X4 trucks because they are expensive as hell to more than likely to break. Before walking in the dealerships do your homework!!!!!!! Get preapproved and shop rates and go to the dealership with it, if they can beat it great, if not use your preapproved loan. You can also shop around for warranties as well. Lots of insurance companies sell these and are sometimes cheaper than a dealership sells them for.

Very true Scotty! When I went in to buy my first car roughly 3 years ago. They got me into the finance department and the guy thought he was slick! Little did he know I'm good with numbers and not to mention already on edge cuz it being a dealership. Anyways the finance offers me this really good extended warranty, tires paint correction, interior cleaning and so on. He tells me it will only cost me $23/month, no brainier right! Or so I thought. Well upon reprinting out the new agreement it did only jump up about $23/month like he stated but of course me overlooking the contract with a fine tooth comb again I notice not only did he add the extended warranty he tacked on another year of payments to go with it! And the asshole tried to tell me that I was over thinking it! He says "look it's simple math $23 x the length of your loan (which was only 72 at first) is even a lil less than I qouted you", "But I'll take the loss since you're a valued customer" lol. I said ya but the first contract had 72 months now this one's says 84 months!?!? Wtf so a warranty that was $1,995 would have turned out to be $6k had I not caught it! Dirty bastards!!! Lol

The highest one made it 271$/month. One week later a new rebuilt AAMCO transmission costing dad only for the cost of the transmission fluid, he paid $1150 for the warranty, new AAMCO tranny was $2400. I agree. Never buy a warranty for anything. Most items come with factory / manufacturer warranties. That is all you need. The extra warranties on cars, or electronics in the store, are a waste! Think of how often you use them? Think of all the receipts you must keep track of! It's just a mess, and like Scotty said, they don't even cover what you think they might! Best to never buy a warranty on anything. If you need to fix something, worry about it then, and pay for the repair with all the money you saved not buying pointless warranties on everything!

Depends on what it is. An extended warranty has saved me on a high dollar Laptop, and a high end 75 Inch TV. I also bought one for the washer/dryer and in that case it was a waste. Even though the water pump went, it was a $30 dollar part on ebay and if you know how to work on things it's an easy fix. Again, depends on the product.
@earthling1984
@earthling1984 6 жыл бұрын
Always best to never buy on anything. Don't waste your money pre-paying for something you may never use, or, may cost less to fix yourself. It's either all or none; you can't guess what might break and be worth it (most aren't worth buying even if something does break).

Earthling1984 I understand where you are coming from, I tend to fix the problems I do have on my vehicles. I was told as a child and have been a strong believer on it, "it's better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it". Some extended warranties are a waste and some are not, it all really depends on the value, use and reliability of the product in question. Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.😁
@earthling1984

If you never buy a warranty for anything, imagine how much money you will save. It's best to go all or nothing with warranties. Otherwise, you may buy for products that never break, and products you didn't buy it for will break. That's just how it works lol. Car warranties are a total scam. The only time you should get a car warranty is if you get like a used Land Rover from Carmax. Then get their bumper to bumper warranty because, it's a Land Rover, things are going to go wrong, and fast. But, you have to be dumb to buy a Land Rover in the first place :P

For what I learned is that Japanese cars do not need extended warranty. Now German cars do. I own an Audi S5. I bought it with extended warranty through Fidelity... thank God. The Extended warranty cost me close to $4000. Now the car some issues that even when it was under their factory warranty, but their warranty wasn't able to fully cover me for everything: cost of repairs were $3000. Right after the original warranty went out, the car started having very serious mechanical issues till now. Total expenses that I added so far are close to $12,000, and this car still has some problems. Audi gives me a loaner whenever the car has this issues but If i didnt have warranty I would have been left stranded asking for a ride, paying a tow truck, or paying out of pocket for this ridiculous expenses.

Excellent advice, Scotty. I always knew any extended warrantee is a scam designed to benefit the store or car dealership. Your advice to save money on the side for repairs can come from what you would have paid for the premiums. Cars are indeed machines and machines age and break down. The only solution is replace the broken and worn out parts--not pay for an insurance policy that won't be there for you when you need it.

Sounds like you have never owned any used European vehicle or KIA. They are not a respecter of time. They give up on you whenever they feel like it. Warranty HIGHLY recommended on BMW and Audi's of the world. You can't just replace their parts with parts from the junkyard or DIY them so it is back to the dealer for repair when they need fixing. I do all work on my Nissan my self with parts from the Junk yard so my piggy bank is quite helpful in this case.

The way he explained it to me had me thinking twice about buying the car in the first place as he said this and that would be breaking down. I declined the extended warranty and after putting 198k miles on it in 9 years, I only had to replace brakes, a water pump, and a throw out bearing. So, to heck with an extended warranty.

I bought one with my car and it was there when I needed. I bought it from the car company. Right after the actual warranty, I had my first and second problem and the e tended warranty helped. Therefore I disagree and i will buy it again.

You'd have to be crazy to pay for one of these joke warrantees! A friend of mine just bought a used Nissan rogue and bragged about how she got a great deal from a sales person who was supposedly her friend. She said he gave her a great deal on the extended warranty too. I couldn't believe she spent $1,200 extra on a warrantee when the factory warrantee was still in effect. I told her to look up reviews on extended warrantees and then tell me how good a friend this guy is. He might as well have been begging her to give him $600 out of her pocket. These warrantees are rarely honored when it comes time to get any major repair work done. There's a very long list of complaints to the Better Business Bureau from customers who are getting screwed by Car Shield. These warrantees have fine print that gets them off the hook for covering most major repairs involving the engine, transmission, brakes, climate control system, and the computer system. This company will refuse coverage and leave your car sitting at the shop for weeks before you finally realize that any further attempts to get them to pay are futile. They won't cover the repairs and they won't pay for any rental car. They've crafted a warrantee document that almost without exception immunizes them from taking financial responsibility. There's always some part that is found to be the cause of the damage that is specifically not covered in the contract. They've taken good care to make sure that they get your payments on time while never authorizing repairs. It's the perfect scam. You literally need an attorney to understand the limits of the contract at the time of the sale. Virtually no buyer is qualified to read that document and understand it. You're better off setting $59 dollars a month aside to put towards any future work you'll need done, because Car Shield will never be there when you need them. They make their money by denying claims and hanging you out to dry.

Extended warranties are a rip off. I used to sell cars and everything Scotty says about those"warranties" is true. We pushed those extended warranties because they greatly enhanced our commission. The company even does contests to sell more warranties. If we sold a certain amount of warranties, we got a bonus. Scotty is right on the money, no pun intended. Save your money.

IDK, I would say if you have the $30k+ to throw out on a new car, you have the money to afford a $1-2k extended factory warranty...don't get those stupid no-name warranties that everyone gets solicitations about.

Still, a warranty is only as good as the people who stand behind it. It has been my experience that they will try to weasel out of their obligation, especially if the repair is a major expensive one. Manufacturers can be the worst about that. I've even had to threaten legal action because they denied my claim.

Scotty is the best. So glad I watched this before buying a new Honda! I also assume that warranties and services for cars have much higher profit margins than cars themselves. That's why they always try to cross-sell those two things with a new car.

Well done Scotty. I was an "analyst" for a bank that under writes these contracts. There is no such thing as an extended warranty. A warranty is a promise from a manufacturer. What you bought is a service contract between the dealer and yourself, even if the crooked salesman doesn't present it that way. The service writers get grouchy too. They would say things like "I'm just the middle man" to the customer. No, JM&A is the middle man. JM&A is the middle man, the administrator of the contract.

I agree with you. And my relative bought one from the dealer on a 2012 Toyota RAV4. Within one year, she already used it to replace the bad struts and a leaking seal on the transmission. So far that means she's come out ahead. Course on that generation RAV4 Toyota had so many issues with the rear suspension, like 3 recalls.
