You perfectly laid out just exactly how I felt with Notion when I tried it. I've been working exclusively with a bullet journal the past year and that's what works best for me. I love the idea of Notion but there's just too many options there for me? It's overwhelming? Maybe if I paid someone to just put it all together for me, I'd like it. But my ADHD brain needs to switch things up too often. So a messy blank bullet journal is still just the best option for me!

Yess!! Exactly! It's such a nice platform, but my brain just says "let's spend 10 hours making this EXACTLY how we want it, until we hate even looking at it!" oof.

It's funny because bullet journals are supposed to be simple and the internet took them and made them so complicated. I get some people use it as art, but all these people who make planning videos have to be spending hours just setting up these tools and it's like no I dont have the time for that and it just seems inefficient.

I'm not diagnosed with ADHD but I too, spent a whole week setting up my notion. Created pages like reading list and watching list... tried to put my notes into notion too, thinking maybe I could have one app to cover everything in my life. AND TURNS OUT I CAN'T. idk I just don't feel like tracking everything, even if I usually forgot things that I needed to get done... like I waste my time tracking stuff until I realized it make me not productive, at all. At this point I honestly don't know how to keep track of my life lol

Yes!! Exactly how I feel, only I get sucked in and *want* to track everything, but I just...don't, and then I waste so much time trying to find new ways to track things. In reality, I just need to realize that I don't need to track every little thing, and I just need to find a productivity system that works for me, lol

Felt so called out when you bought up hyprfocusing on making it cute/aesthetic. I get a whole lot of mialage out of things looking nice and for me the struggle is finding that balance between it being cute and functional. To try and add a limitation to how much time I spend on that I bought an icon pack of etsy meant for phone and just use those since I know it'll be cohesive and good looking. The learning curve with notion is probably one of the biggest barriers though and fortunately my ADHD manifests in the "must learn everything instead of doing the thing" way so for me that wasn't the intimidating part. Databases for task lists are amazing, you can filter by the project, if it's completed, deadline, or all 3. For people with my lifestyle of never being far from a screen (the first thing I do when I wake up is go on my laptop) and like learning new software I think notion is a very good option.

I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD since I was 7. I’m currently a PhD student researcher and I have yet to find a good all inclusive system. We have learned to recognize when systems will and won’t work for us. Notion and Evernote are both hard pass. I can tell you right now - Notion will not work for anyone who has trouble designing organizational systems or gets overwhelmed with too many options. Most people with ADHD will struggle with it, especially if you go in blind. It initially seem amazing and it will have all of the possibilities, but we lack the executive function to structure them and put them to use.

@@PhilippaRichardsame. I think the beauty of Notion is you can do whatever you want with it. I spent a long time imagining how I wish I could function, and what that would look like, and with Notion I'm able to cater to those needs. I think having an idea in mind initially of what you want is key, otherwise it's easy to get overwhelmed. It's been a Godsend for me, and it's like I can externalize my brain and have a second one. To their point though, if a person struggles with envisioning organizing systems to begin with, it'll of course be difficult to use Notion for them.

I know a lot of people that get a ton out of them, but I can't use an open-slate tools like Notion, or Amplenote for anything but notes, and I very much prefer the leanness of Obsidian for that. I'm busy as hell and if I need to spend more than one evening actively thinking about how the app works, and then how I need to logically structure a system in the app that represents my tasks, it's an absolute non-starter. I think that's probably true for a lot of people with ADHD, but obviously not everyone. I'm a software developer by trade--- it's like 20% of the effort of just coding my own solution in like python, so if I was going to go that route, I'd just start from scratch. Best I've found so far is TickTick for tasks and calendaring, plus Obsidian for note taking. I think TickTick has note taking stuff but it seems like a bolt-on, and Obsidian is great. With just notes, I don't need it to have an opinionated structure for documents and things, so that open-slate flexibility is great. It means I need to think about the app *less* than if it was more structured. For tasks and calendaring, I *want* to have built-in purpose-built tools. "This is where you go to see today's tasks. This is where you put uncategorized incoming tasks. This is where you see your timeline for the day and optionally drop tasks on their to assign them specific times." That's all stuff I would have needed to create by hand in the more open-ended apps and it just wasn't worth the effort to me.

I was very overwhelmed by Notion the first three times I tried to learn how to use it. It didn't work for me. Then I discovered the power of databases and this is absolutely my favorite feature and the reason I am using Notion and not something else. I have crazy overcomplicated databases but it works for me. Example: my houseplant databases that include library of species with info about care, my plants that are connected to library and pull data from there, and also tons of status fields and tags. I log what I plan to do, when I fertilised, repotted, propagated what plant from which, add photos with notes. And then views for each purpose that just show what I need for that task - plan for repotting, fertilizing schedule, or just gallery. Then I have a weekly cooking calendar, where I decide which dinners I am going to make so that a) I don't have to decide everyday b) there is variety c) I bought enough groceries. That one is relatively simple but I have a bunch of subviews for different food types (fish, meat, eggs, etc.). Definitely if I can filter things out depending on the problem I am trying to solve, that is tremendously helpful. I hate having a dashboard with many things and checkboxes. Instead there is a gallery database with my active "projects" and I can open the one I need right now.

I have adhd and I absolutely love notion! I don't use it for daily planning but I use it to organize things like assignments, goals, recipes and safe foods. I don't care much for the aesthetics but more about the functionality. I used a bullet journal before but I would never fill it in. I need something to have on hand all the time or else I forget about it so my phone and computer is the best option for me. I also use notion to journal and track my mood and habits. I'm not a fan of writing and typing comes easier for me. I also like the people template. I tend to think I don't have friends and no one to talk to but with this database I can keep track of people and see if I haven't talked to someone in a while. I don't update these things everyday, just when I think about it. I really love the customization, bit of a nerd lol

I 100% feel you :( I've been using notion on and off for the exact reasons you explained but I'm still pushing to use it because I'm the kinda person to feel icky about having bits and pieces all over the place. I signed up for notion because I needed ONE place to put everything, neatly organized. (that didn't happen, lol) the most functional part of the app for me is the one where I journal, take notes, etc. as someone with adhd, I don't think I'll ever feel 100% comfortable using notion because (and this is my biggest problem) monthly/weekly/daily planning is just too much effort and not at all sync-able. if the devs invested some time into a more structured /time/ planner (like a dedicated element) it'd probably be much better. sorry for the long comment but great video :D thank you for sharing your very relatable experience with notion!

this was so interesting to watch as someone with adhd who couldn't function without notion. at first, i absolutely dove in without thinking about what use it had in my life and just wanted to try all the things. however, when i really asked myself what i needed, i was able to focus in on building something that actually worked for my brain. before, i had tried physical planners and never used them; the fact that notion is an app on my phone (where i can add my planner page as a shortcut) made it so much easier to remember to actually use it. the customization meant that i could have a dumping ground for my assignments and organize them into tasks and have a spot to check due dates, all in one page. and i still struggle with the urge to try all the things! but instead, i use that as a reward for myself: you kept your room mostly clean this week? try out that new notion feature you've been wanting to experiment with. basically, i love notion, but i could see why it wouldn't be the best option for someone with adhd

I've got ADHD and I think that lent to me learning everything possible about notion in a short amount of time, but I've never cared too much about the aesthetics of it, just the functionality. Templates are helpful to lend structure. I'll usually start with one and then adjust as my use-Case changes. I also hate using it as a daily planner and do not use it as a tracker at all. I have todoist for day-to-day task management and I use notion to organize projects at work. I use it for school notes, and I also use it as a log for my personal tarot readings so that I can easily search through them. I mostly use it on my phone too so the aesthetic stuff just makes pages load slower and makes it harder to find what I'm looking for so I keep pages super duper simple. 😂😂 I think I got over having all those fancy page setups that I would never use when I first got into bullet journaling year ago so I don't even bother tinkering smthg I would never use.

I get to know Notion through a friend and suddenly there was a lot of youtube recomendations for it and I wanted to scream! All the visual informations, emojis for every single thing and unlimited subpages... at that time I was using the Carroll method for bullet journaling for about a year, in a simplified version, so seeing the whole world of Notion was quite overwhelming for me too. After about FIVE FULL DAYS of researching and testing, spending hours fiddling around, I managed to readapt two simple models into a similar Carroll method into Notion. All simple: in just one page I have control of all the things I used to write down in the bujo (trivial to-dos, appointments, college projects, manage freelance orders and the month goals...) blocking them into a time frame so it won't be too much, and in another single page is the diary and humor track, simple too. Regarding the aesthetics, I was used to the simplicity of polka dots and dashes all in black and white on the bujo, so it was easy to deal with the aesthetic possibilities as I had the goal of keeping the minimalist style of the bujo. But despite of it being useful for me as the Carroll bujo was I relate so hard with your points, I almost gave up so many times...

Hey. Nice Video. Love from Namibia. As a fellow ADHD brain, I could relate so hard when you said that the boundless customisation was our double edged sword. It really is just taking me DAYS just setting it up. However, therein lies the fun. I want to overcustomise and then simplify. I do understand that the more barriers or complexity you create, the less likely you are to utilise it, however, I really want to ... like plan properly for the first time in my life so I'll try and stick with notion. How is it working for you ? Still using it ?

Nice - welcome, always glad to have you here in my little space on the internet! I totally agree - it is really fun to customize it! I am...unfortunately not using it anymore. As much as I want to because of the convenience, I really just don't think that my brain jives with digital planning. I currently work from home, and I've been using a regular wall calendar and a daily to-do-list pad, and that's been working out pretty well for me so far. I'm sure those will be less effective once I move back to in-office, but they work for now!

I'm not diagnosed with ADHD but I might have it. I used to use notion for everything, as in journaling, to do lists, calendar, goal organizing, hobbies and I couldn't mentally separate these categories, therefore I would get overwhelmed and confused on what I actually need to do in my day-to-day life. I transitioned to using Google Tasks and Google Calendar as my main planner. This is where I actually put my schedule and things I need to do. It's so much quicker and simpler just opening the Tasks app on my phone and immediately inputing a task that pops up in my head instead of trying to make it pretty in Notion. On the other side, I use Notion for more complex planning and brainstorming like goal making and steps how to accomplish them. I also use Google Keep for notes that don't require much structure, so therefore don't belong in Notion, but still require some organizing.

Your are nailing it. I am an ADHDer and I did THE EXACT SAME THING with Notion. I really need limitations in my "systems" that MAKE me simplify. I think another reason this doesn't work for me as a 3d thinkers... I need a messy cycle, when things get crazy and ideas are allowed free rain in my mind, and then the process of shepherding those thoughts into some cohesiveness is a therapeutic process I benefit from each time I do it. If I have an organized system that keeps things in neat little rows, then I really sabotage the whole magical process that takes place within. In a strange way, its like I can't even SEE order. ADHD people have a kind of "order dyslexia" .

Notion is like buying a phone with too many features - most of which you won't understand, use or find useful for your needs. But like phones, when you don't have it and see so many videos, you just think you can organise life better with it and have a FOMO. When you start using it, you realise that it feels like building a house constantly than enjoying living in it. I dont have ADHD and its just an average Joe's view of something too overwhelming for his needs.

I know my limits with my ADHD. I tried using Asana like this years ago, and it didn't work. So when I discovered notion, I thought it sounded amazing, but I knew I would never keep up with it if I tried to use it to plan my entire life. My life doesn't need a lot of planning. My bullet journal is plenty. So, I use notion, but only for specific things. I use notion to take notes for online courses, books, and podcasts because it's easier than taking notes by hand and copying them over and over when I mess them up. I'm considering using it for clipping recipes online, because I've always used Evernote for that, but I have a hard time finding anything in Evernote. Basically, David Allen has this idea in his GTD system. You need somewhere to capture your ideas, somewhere to organize your tasks, and somewhere to store information that you'll need for later. I use my bullet journal for the first 2 and have begun using notion for the 3rd.

My BuJo is my analog companion that allows me to be messy and download what I need to do at the moment and record small but necessary gains throughout a hectic day, but I have never been able to use the goal planning or reflection spreads in it. I have too much to say, which I cannot remember to articulate when looking at the paper page. smh. I use Notion to organize the brain farts and sparks that come infrequently but are necessary for me to be functional on some sort of average. I will say that I am very thankful for the journey with Notion that has allowed me to confront so many incorrect assumptions that I have made about what will help me function better and has saved me from starting at Square One all the time. My Notion matches me and meets me where I am, but It has taken two full restarts on it and then several progressive iterations to get here. With Notion, you can make the almost perfect planner for you at this point of your life and then the next point, and I can say the same of my BuJo for when I restart it. It may seem confusing or off to someone else, but it works for me. :) Thank you Notion and the Bullet Journal!

Seeing that beautiful Github Octocat sticker on your Macbook, I need to ask... Are you a software developer/engineer? :D :D :D I had a similar experience with Notion, and now I'm back to my simple, messy, no-fluff, but awesome bullet journal. That's what works for me, in combination with Google Calendar. Then, Trello for off-work collaborative projects.

I went through a coding bootcamp, and now work as a team lead in quality assurance in web design/digital marketing. Software development or front-end web development is my end-goal. :) oooh, Trello is so aesthetically pleasing, lol. I've never tried it, but I really like the way it looks!

I feel like you're inside my head. I don't know if it's a me thing or an ADHD thing, but I feel like I live in the grey rather than the black and white, so more options are not better. I've had some luck with Trello.

I found that all the complex and in depth options and the foundation of working in databases just wasn’t how my brain works. Realized all I needed was blank pages to fill in organized sections. I think I wasted a good 4 months of my life trying to set it up and then found I would never use it; mainly because getting to where I needed to go, regardless how I set it up, felt so tiresome and aggravating.

I hate it. I've been trying to set up my school time table on there for hours now. Please, what are you talking about. I just need a table, why can't I create a new table? Why does clicking this column bring me to a new page? I'm close to tears

I've heard that Obsidian is pretty ADHD friendly. That's just what I've heard though - I don't personally have ADHD. But it has definitely more opportunity for overengineering since it's so customizable, so if that's your problem, it might not be that good after all ^^ Might be worth checking it out, though. It's a great way to just write down unstructured, random thoughts, link them to previous ones and have patterns naturally emerge from it.

At first notion didn't work for me. But now my whole life is there. It's good for putting references, making lists, etc. But for scheduling idk. I kept my written agenda for that. I use notion as a reference, a brain dump tool.

I had to search for people who aren't in love with Notion to see what other people use. Their takeover on KZbin is ridic. I use Bullet Journals to a degree, but I actually really like Trello for project management because I like Kanban style better and it's so easy to use I don't need that many custom options.

If Notion works well for you, use it! I was just explaining that it doesn't work for me personally. Unfortunately, I don't know of an alternative - the features it offers are awesome! I just have to admit to myself that digital planning isn't for me.

True, and it may work (obviously, it's a very popular tool) very well for some people! It just doesn't jive with my brain, as most digital planning tools don't, unfortunately.

I was diagnosed at 28 and medicated at 30 when my life started falling apart...0/10 Don't recommend it! So many bad habits im still struggling to break. Getting organized is a big part of that because I suck at it. ☠👾 I got sucked into it too when customizing my Notion! When I got to start setting up my projects and work I was like... NOPE! To complicated! I found doing everything on paper first and building a "skeleton" for what I want to build in Notion is way more doable. I don't bother tracking habits and stuff. Work stuff, budgets, and keeping track of spending Yes, Tracking purchases and subscriptions, Yes. But weekly stuff like workouts or water... Nope. The app is great but not to the point that I want to look at it every day! So yeah, "skeleton" first then do the main pages, naming them making your list and stuff according to what you have on paper, and lastly, I only customize my Main page/Dashboard and add little color headers for grouped stuff like, Budget and finance pages all have green headers, Life and goals/journals are yellow... That way I don't get sucked in and spent 8 hours, moving and creating images... lol. But over all, I totally agree with you. You have to have a recipe and game plan to get into Notion, otherwise, you will be making a cute layout and get lost in the endless loop stop and start again.♥
