Not having a common way of communicating means the other skills and channels are always enhanced. Being illiterate is the same, and literacy actually physically changes the structure of the brain. So we are all changed by the physical affordances, in addition to the social. But we still think all people should be literate.

Hey Neil, just to let you know, I’ve been raising awareness in the comments on the union workers to the CEOs at the top to be aware of making work accommodations for people with disabilities, especially deaf people because even though people with disabilities and people who are deaf are around we’re not dangerous people we just work differently. And we have different skills.

Also, I started learning bits and pieces of sign language when I was a kid because my older sister used to babysit a blind and deaf Asian girl, named Daisy and Daisy taught my older sister sign language and my sister needed a practice partner home so I had her teach me some sign language and then I Siri teaching myself through computer programs and ASL books so I’m not fluent I can’t sign Full sentences and paragraphs as fast as you can but I love learning sign language it’s awesome

I mean... people don't need sight, smell, hearing, taste or any of their limbs to live a fulfilling life. I can understand someone who lived their whole life without one of these things not wanting to correct it later in as they feel they personally will not be able to acclimate. But if there were a way to correct all deafness at birth, it would be cruel not to give children the ability to hear.

I personally think BSLand ASL should be taught in mainstream schools. #Deaf #culture #bsl #asl 👂🤘

Why can’t we teach ASL in schools?

To say deafness is not a disability is straight up denail.

Maybe you just heard what you wanted to hear? At 2:43 he said: "From their [hearing people's] perspective, deafness is a disability and couldn't possibly be inclusive of a culture, which in fact is not true".

@@kenster8270 A large ethical debate (and probably most contentious) around deafness is about whether it would be ethical to withhold any future reliable medication to cure deafness. If deaf parents were able to control whether their child was deaf or not, many would prefer for their child to also be deaf (so that they could experience deaf culture). The interviewer is asking questions along these lines in the last five minutes of the video.

@@spicysashage1886 I was replying to a likely deliberate misunderstanding. What the interpreter in the clip says is NOT that it is not true that deafness is a disability but that it is not true that deafness can't be inclusive of a culture. From the context of that sentence it is quite clear what is meant.

Not all Deaf individuals agree that being Deaf is a disability. Some Deaf individuals think being able to hear and not being able to sign is a disability. Some Deaf individuals like Nyle grew up within a Deaf family & a Deaf community, others grew up within the Hearing World. 👂

@@spicysashage1886It's the same discussion regarding cochlear implants. Some Deaf individuals choose to have the operation, while others choose not to, they maybe feel (rightly or wrongly) less connected to their Deaf identity if they have cochlear implants fitted. 👂🤘

what does he mean stealing their spotlight? Otherwise he's full of woke terminology, it's obvious those aren't his thoughts, he's just been indoctrinated.

If he in anyway endorsed having a person add a personality to his voice (ie having any voiceover) then he’s an utter hypocrite.

what are you talking about lol? that is his interpreter and sign language includes his own personality and expression, that is what his interpreter is expressing for him because they are speaking two different languages. it is no different to someone speaking Spanish and their interpreter expressing their accurate emotion into English.
