I personally went through this experience in Estonia and was also very aware of what was happening in Latvia and seems to be an issue that seemed to impact both countries in such a way that many foreign people avoided opening bank accounts in these two countries especially in the case of Latvia.

I had a personal account in Mexico at Santander. They sent me a letter saying they were closing it, with no explanation. I tried to open a business account and Santander wouldn't even consider it once they found out I'm from the US. I finally got a business account at Inbursa. What you say makes a lot of sense.

One overarching reason may be that interest rates being so low banks are not interested any more in having dormant money on accounts.

You basically explained why crypto will win. Whole de-risking trend will lead to world full of borders with increasingly isolated economies and very high entry level for starting global business. With decentralised stable coins like DAI, over long term, it will be the only available option to realistically start global business. Right now DeFi (decentralised finance) is taking off rapidly.

Andrew Can you do one for individual accounts for retired people who have passive income.Thinking of visiting Armenia and Georgia ? to open accounts and wondering what to look out for. Does it get their attention if there is not a lot or little activity in the account ? Does it help to say I'm here to look at RE and I want to open an account to have money here just in case I find something I want to buy ?
