you would think old means crappy. But the quality of old rav4s are superior to the new ones. Don't believe me?

I have a 1998 RAV4 in the same color. First car I've bought when I was 19, bought for 3k with 183k. I'm 32 years old now and still have the car with 304k miles. No Engine problems. Original Starter. Things have gone bad but it wasn't till the last few years. Alternator and Radio finally died 2 years ago and finally started to Radiator cracked. Replace all suspension, but they all were very inexpensive. No joke like 600 dollars for all the parts and did it all by myself with my jacks and hands. Even the Transmission died 4 years ago and blew at 260K but got a brand new one for 450. Small wear and tear as the years have gone by. The paint is finally starting to fade but I say for all the reliability its given me throughout the last 13 years, I'm extreme happy customer. Its a very simple car to fix. Even the gaskets are easy to fix! I'll be have it around for another 10 years for sure. You can't beat Toyotas First Gen Rav4!

I've owned 3 1997 rav4 's. 2 were totaled. Best car mechanically I've ever owned. My third which I own now was bought 5 years ago with 44,000 miles. It now has 74,000. Both previous cars had 150,000 before totalled. The Ford escape I had clogged up the catalytic converters and I purchased the rav I have today. It's a 3 door with a stick. Wouldnt hesitate to take it anywhere. At 74,000 miles and 24 years old with no rust spots and excellent paint its still a young Toyota!

I had a 1997 RAV4 in the same color. It was loaded with everything including a sunroof, LSD, A/C, and ABS. Along with the 4wd and ctr diff lock button with a 5 speed manual. Great car. Unfortunately rust destroyed the under carriage so it had to go. Still cruising just fine in my 2004 German Spec'd RAV4 4wd with 5sp, and everything else. The main difference between the German and US models from 2003 to 2006 they did not carry over the 2.4 for the '03 to 06 but updated the 2.0vvti motor. The best and coolest RAV4's were from the first 2 Generations in my opinion.

I’ve got a 2004 RAV4 and it’s amazing! I’ve also got a 2022 RAV4 on order. Originally bought the 2004 to drive while I waited for the new RAV to arrive but I love it so much that I’m keeping it. Doesn’t burn oil, 2.4L motor is much better than the 2.0L and the only mechanical issue is the 5th gear which vibrates. I’ll get that fixed shortly as it’s a known issue. Pretty good for an old car with 227k on the clock.

My fammily got the same, engine is very nice, doesn't burn oil like my newer avensis, have good power, we fit lpg system and you can't tell difference in power and consumpsion between gas and lpg, only it is half the price in my country. Handling is also very nice for suv. Only problem with rav4s is rust, all of them rust out with time.

Mk1 and mk2 are the best rav 4 models. Tough as old boots. 2000 to 2006 mk2 has more room and a goid 4wd system but just under an inch less clearance. Its for me the best compromise and built to last. You need to clean up rust undernearh then spray it with lanolin spray such as lanoguard

Replace the control arms ASAP. Frame looks real clean though by Canadian standards. They all have surface rust everywhere here, not many left

The drive train is very rusty. Maybe from salt. It needs to be put on a hoist and checked out and treated if necessary. Could be costly. OK for local driving but a cross country trip? no way in that shape. Generally Toyota's built in Japan are good vehicles.
This 1996 Rav4 will survive the apocalypse!
