The irony of this video is the man who is against wearing leather jackets is in his mid-30 to early 40s and wearing a blue jean jacket, which is an even more informal and cheaper alternative to the leather jacket. When I was growing up, people started out with blue jean jackets in high school before they could afford leather jackets as adults. So if people his age are too old to wear leather jackets, then wearing a blue jean jacket screams "juvenile fashion." Signed, a 53-year-old man with 13 leather jackets.

My dad is 85, he owns a soft leather jacket that is grey and VERY simple looking. No needless zips or rivets or detailing. I think this clean, elegant style totally works on the older generation as it's not trying to look like a young rocker or biker. I think the style of the jacket and how casual or smart it is makes as much of a difference as the material.

I watched the first few mins of this video before realizing it was a waist of time. This guy throwing insults at “older men” and labeling any older dude that defended his choice of clothing against their insults as “boomer generation at it’s absolute worst” is ridiculous and a fine example for the downfall of his generation. He appears to be an over feminized and weak male trying to compensate for his lack of masculinity with a smart-mouth teenage-punk attitude. But what do you expect from a guy that looks like he’s never done a day of hard-work in his life and probably uses more cosmetics than his girlfriend does. FYI not I’m not a boomer and primarily wear leather for work requirements and motorcycling. I don’t care if your male or female 18-80 if you ride motorcycle you need good leathers. But I guess for these two motorcycle-safety for men in their 40s is a mid-life crisis. Ridiculous video. Guys and gals out there, do yourselves a favor and wear whatever makes you comfortable, safe, and feel happy.

The fact that these guys are so condescending and incompetent judging by their personal appearance, compelled me to buy another leather jacket even more (and yes I'm over 50 and I have three) and have been wearing them all my life, as has my late father. So what if you wear them for nostalgic reasons from the 50s whether or not you ride a motorcycle or not? Jewelry, boots, saddles, leather jackets, belts, hats, bikes, and cars, just to mention a few things are cherished from generations past. I've seen a guy wear a vintage ill-fitting watch just because it was a special heirloom. It doesn't have to be "modern." A leather jacket is no different. For those "older men" who aren't sure after listening to this garbage, virtually every other fashion expert on leather offers "concrete suggestions" on how to wear leather and inclusive of "all age groups." These wannabe fashionistas stick out like a sore thumb as outliers on the leather fashion sense. But at the end of the day, you've got to wear what makes you feel good and don't go buy someone else's rules, especially, when they spout ridiculous advice and insulting verbiage

I’m pretty young myself and I work for a leather company and leather jackets look great on older men. A simple pebble grain finish bomber, vintage style leather jacket with brass detailing, that develops a nice patina over time from wear, looks great on older men. Just avoid smooth, shiny, flashy type jackets. Most older men I see that wear leather jackets dress accordingly and don’t wear styles that obviously don’t mix to well, such as jackets with a lot of metal details and features, flashy zippers, and a smooth, shiny leather finish. There is almost a leather jacket for anyone nowadays. You know leather jackets are not limited to one style?

Leather jackets are ageless and timeless! The keys are the fit and occasion. It takes quite a whole lot to make a leather jacket looks formal, especially on older guys. Therefore, older men should avoid wearing them at formal functions if they want to be taken seriously at first sight. A young person can get away with such look. The next important consideration is the fit. The rule of thumb is to go one size below your regular fit. Exp, if you normally wear Large in other jackets, try medium in leather jackets. Otherwise, it's complete utter nonsense to suggest that older guys stay away from leather jackets! I'm 58 and still turn heads with my bomber!

I am not arguing about your fashion advise. However, I intend to keep wearing my old well-worn brown leather bomber jacket that my father gave me before he died in 2010 at 93 yo. I am 75 & I usually wear it when I am out with my best friend when we are walking her dogs. Here in NE it is often wet & colder a good part of the year & it works. It is also emotional: my dad flew B-29s.

I am a 56 year old man that wears a softer leather ( black lamb skin ) with button down shirts & Docker pants or jeans. So I wear the jacket in a dressier fashion. For this reason, I believe that i can still get away with it.

Ashley and Dorian, I always look forward to your videos and have learned SO much from you! I'm 51, retired military, athletic and own a Cockpit brand 40th Anniversary A-2 Flight Jacket that I occasionally wear. It was not cheap too. I don't wear it all the time because of the elements and have warmer jackets, but think I look cool in it hahaha. I actually think the flight jacket can look good with jeans and conservative attire but can see your point. It depends on the jacket and the individual. I feel good in mine and have received complements but certain jackets may be perceived as over the top.

My dad wears his leather jackets at 40 years old, and he gets compliments. My friend whos 20 complimented my dad too. My dad can still rock it becaus of his style. He doesn't have the typical "old man" style where they wear sneakers with all outfits and such

This is the funniest thread I've come across in a long time. Everyone's in role. The boomers (I'm one) shrieking that they can wear whatever they want on their own lawn, the Red Queen screaming "off with his leather" to the defiant seniors, the goofy husband whose denim-pirate look replicates my age-8 Halloween costume. Shifting my perception at 70 to regard a 40-year-old as too old to do anything is requiring me to take a pill. I landed here because I'm shopping for a jacket. KZbin stylists carp about "age-appropriate dressing" but all their images are basically archetypes of slightly updated men in soap operas from 20 or 30 years ago. I know this is an actual problem. I mean, if I go to a decent menswear store, they try to dress me like I was forced to dress when I was a teenager -- woolly suits, oxford shirts, strangling ties, rugby shirts (wtf?), Izod shirts, London-Fog-style jackets, sweater vests, khakis that are "trim but not slim or tight but updated with some added stretch." Ultimately, I'm left with this question: If so many of us are outraged by this stylist's advice, how did we end up watching this video? The title says exactly what it's about. My answer is that I really do worry my balding head about this crap. Oh....Ashley, can I be cremated in my leather bomber jacket I bought when I was 40?

All these "don't wear xx if you are older than yy" etc videos are ridiculous. It's matter of how you carry yourself, your style etc. I remember when people said "what will those people with tattoos do when they get old" .... recently I walked in town and came across a lady, must have been 70 around, tattoos up to her neck, a very "alt" kinda unique clothing style, it all looked so well put together that I literally stopped and just looked at her in joy and amazement. If a grandma 70 years old can pull that off like the queen of darkness, while at the same time looking elegant and even kinda fancy, then I'll never listen to any "don't wear this after the age of xx". You do you, if you wanna blend in to the masses because you like the mass-style, go for it, if you have your own style, for heavens sake, just live it!

First off, an 80’s sailor t-shirt and acid-washed jean jacket-wearing guy might not be the best fashion cred messenger. That said, leather jackets boil down to style and physique IMO. A Members Only or similarly-styled “mall” leather jacket will always look cheesy and out of place regardless of wearer. At the same time, a dad bod will always look like a dad bod regardless of wardrobe. The “X” factor is the comfort zone and attitude of the wearer. Brian Setzer will look at home wearing a motorcycle jacket until his last breath. A middle-aged guy trying to portray an image that has never aligned with his personality will never convincingly pull off the new look. I’ve been wearing flight and vintage-style jackets for decades. I also do my part to stay in shape. You’re never going to convince me that my jackets are no longer age-appropriate.

I'm now 50; fashion leathers look wrong on me. A good leather jacket is a tool. Since I'm not operating a motorcycle, I'm not wearing a leather jacket. I'm down to one pigskin 3/4 coat that I bought when I was quite a bit fatter. When I find a deserving very large younger man, I will gift him a really cool coat.

For everyone offended, don't be. Leather jackets is a very specialized category of clothing, that most younger people like most fashion KZbinrs are unaware of. If you watch these guys, TMF, AlphaM or almost anyone else on youtube they only show the really bad quality, super shiny, soft leather jackets. And no, these jackets do not go well with older men. HOWEVER, there are so many good quality leather jackets out there from Aero, levis and so on that are thick and actually develop patina and beautifuly aged leather over time. There is a leather jacket for everyone, and yes, even for older people. With that said, the jacket should reflect the person wearing it. So an older gentleman should probably wear something aged, and a jacket with a simple design such as an aero highwayman or bootlegger. Simple, humble but extremely cool designs which work well for everyone who is willing to spend some extra money for a really good quality hide such as horse or heavy steerhide.
