"Iconically" sure the katana is the most well-known Samurai weapon, but in reality their swords were more akin to a sidearm. They actually used polearms like spears and halberds A LOT more frequently than swords. You nailed the bow aspect right on the head tho. Something I thought of also is that Oshawatt is from Unova, the New York inspired region. If this game is based during the 1850s, thats the same time when America first made contact with Japan (1853 to be specific). Oshawatt could also be chosen to represent that real world connection ot history.

I already planned to pick Cyndi for 3 reasons. 1. I like them(actually I like all three but Oshawatt is equal to The Jhoto fire line). 2. When he said we might be the colonizer, I was like, “oh no, we’re the bad guys!” Because in Japanese history, the Ainu (the indigenous people of Hokkaido with their own, distinct culture and beliefs) are known to not be treated will by the Japanese government. They’re language is on the brink of extinction, they can’t practice their cultural practices even though they’ve been living there for hundreds of years before the Japanese even bothered to go up to Hokkaido. it was in 2019 that the Japanese government finally acknowledged the ainu’s existence as Hokkaido’s indingeous people. If that’s not insulting, I don’t know what is.

They did confirm that lore-wise, these were given to you by someone who discovered these Pokémon while traveling to other regions. That being said, this was a super interesting video that draws parallels on real historical moments in colonization and how it might translate to the story of this game. Conceptually, I love the idea of a spin off game having a mixed set of starters each from different gens.

My thoughts when I saw the three starters for the first time "Okay Oshawatt's final evolution is literally a samurai, it's even in the name. Easy. Rowlet, okay, it and Dartix use leaves like kunai and other throwing weapons, its final evo is an archer and it's ghost-like nature fits ninja stealth. Cyndaquil... because it has Smokescreen (smoke bombs) and fire because Japan and China actually invented fireworks? Not that I'm complaining he's my favorite fire starter of the first few gens."

If not for the fact that I'll get to catch in the wild both Chimchar for Infernape, AND Piplup for Empoleon, I might have been a little sad at not having Torterra also included on my team so as to maintain whichever one original Starter I'm given, but Rowlett is easily my favorite Grass Starter ever and the ONLY starter I've EVER chosen instead of the Water Type upon initial playthrough. And not just because I hated Brionne and Primarina. But unfortunately enough as far as Water Starters go, my least favorite lines would be in order Primarina, then Samurott. It's unfortunate because Dewott is fantastic and I like Oshawott, but definitely not over best boi Rowlett and especially not over Piplup! So I'm so glad I get to have 3 starters I have an extreme affinity to.

In comparison to the other starters they could have picked (excluding generation 4 since they appear all around the region) it is the simplest pokemon to consider riding. Same for Samurott. Also, I am not taking way from Gnoggin's research at all, but at the end of the day, from a gameplay perspective, that is probably why gamefreak chose these options. I mean, look at the other starter choices and you may see that it is very hard to find a pokemon that a trainer could feasibly "ride" or hang on to. We know from leaked images that there will be climbing, riding, and gliding. Sure, maybe Typhlosion will be used to ride upon, to increase travel speed, as it is one of the only starters that could easily be ridden. Looking at the other options, I will debunk them one by one for each of the skills they possess: 1) Gliding: There is no pokemon starter that can fly/glide except Decidueye. That choice is easy. Charizard would be the other option...but after gen 8, you really think they would pick Charizard? 2) Water travel: This pokemon MUST also be be used on land, and must be used to travel on water (likely with speed to make it worth it). We cannot use Empoleon (gen 4 starters are wild) and we cannot use Totodile or Poplio (gen 7 starter and gen 2 starter taken). That leaves us with Squirtle, Mudkip, Oshawott, Froakie, and Sobble. Right off the bat, you can't ride Greninja or Intellion feasibly. That leaves Squirtle, Mudkip and Oshawott, and I think that this is where the samurai aesthetic saved Samurott and led it to be picked. Personally, I would have liked to see Swampert, but I also see why that may be an issue, since it is a large pokemon and swimming would likely be slow. Squirtle is gen 1, and honestly I feel like it doesn't fit, with its modern cannons in a diamond and pearl from the past. Finally, 3) Land travel: Since we need a fire type that can travel on land and/or climb, AND can be ridden the choices are: Cyndaquil. Yeah...that's it. It is the only starter that remains somewhat quadruped, and as such the only feasible option here. It is not to take away from Gnoggin, but to add on another possible reason. I agree, Typhlosion for climbing is a bit dumb, but for land travel? Absolutely an option.

I think they picked them for gameplay purposes more than lore. The region is meant to be explored so they picked a starter that can carry you over water, one you can ride on and another that you use to fly. They picked rowlet, cyndaquil and, oshawatt because they couldn’t use galar or Sinoh’s starters since games have come out so recently with the starters in them. They also couldn’t do gen one because gen one pandering, and also we have seen too much charizard. After eliminating those the only flying starter is decidueye, then typhlosion is the best fire type for traversal, then the only two options left are samarott and swampert. So they chose samarott.

I think they are all based on travelers in ancient japan. samurott is based on ronin, a samurai that lose his master and wandering to live alone. decidueye is based on general travelers in japan that it use kasa and bow, but the autumn theme might be a reference to ronin too. and typhlosion is based on komusho, healing priests that traveling around japan

I don't know if anyone made this connection yet, but Cyndaquil, Oshawott, and Rowlet were the highest-ranked first-form starters of their respective regions in the "Pokemon of the Year" poll they did for Pokemon Day 2020. The highest-ranked first-form starters of Kalos and Galar, Fennekin and Sobble respectively, both took a low 14th place for their region. Bulbasaur and Mudkip, representing Kanto and Hoenn, while ranked higher than Rowlet and Oshawott, were likely passed over because of both the reasons for their popularity (first starter and meme) and Oshawott and Rowlet being from regions not based on Japan.
