The fact that Palpatine held Grievous in such high regard, and yet Grievous failed over and over again during TCW to defeat Kenobi, should have caused Palpatine to respect Kenobi a lot more than he did at that point. IMO, underestimating Kenobi was one of Palps’ fatal flaws in the prequel era.

I think he was secretly hoping that Grievous would take Kenobi out during TCW because, in Palps' view, Kenobi and Padme were the two main hurdles to getting Anakin to fall to the dark side. If Kenobi was killed, then that would have made turning Anakin easier.

A clash between two of the angriest and fiercest lightsaber duelists in all of Star Wars would be epic to see; but despite my confidence in Anakin, I think Grievous could succeed in killing him. This is mainly do to the fact that Grievous' fighting style revolves around countering aggression with aggression, literally mimicking the moveset of his opponent, and tearing them apart. The only conceivable way I could see Anakin winning is if he used his massive power in the Force to crush Grievous, or by going against his nature by fighting defensively like Obi-Wan. Considering Obi-Wan being the undisputed master of Form III, the all defensive form, is what made him the only Jedi who could take Grievous in a straight up duel, Anakin would have had to at least fight half as well on the defensive as Obi-Wan to beat Grievous. Yeah, the Dark Side would have made him stronger, but Grievous would have been able to turn all that added aggression against him.

@@andrewgarrett1356 I think he was very flawed in his design actually. When you think about it, there were TOO many things that could have gone wrong but didnt. He left too many ends untied. He didnt expect Maul to die. Qui Gonn could have survived which would have made it impossible to turn him to the dark side. Obi Wan could have killed Anakin on mustafar. Ashoka could have alerted the jedi about order 66 and the corruption in the senate when she was on Mandalore. Dooku almost told Obi-Wan several times too. Maul also almost told Obi-Wan. Palpatine got VERY lucky with how things played out. In my opinion he was too arrogant and self assured, but the only problem was, the Jedi were as well, only MORE.

Grievous relies on his opponent being intimidated. It keeps them from having a clear connection to the Force. Anakin fears many things, but all of them have to do with harm to others, not himself. This is a rare situation where Anakin’s overwhelming arrogance would work to his advantage. Anakin would be absolutely free to draw on the Force on a fight, and with Form V lightsaber Mastery, Grievous would find it difficult to keep Skywalker on his backfoot; Anakin would always be able to swing back hard if Grievous got the upper hand. Grievous miiight be able to win in an ambush, but in a fair fight, Anakin would pull off the win.

On one hand Anakin is impulsive in a fight and a bad match for Grievous that trained to exploit imbalance in Jedi. On the other, Anakin never shies away from copious usage of Force abilities such as Push or Crush, which Grievous doesn't have a countermeasure against and always retreats from.

I also think that Palpatine also knew that Anakin was an “Act first, speak later” type of person, especially closer to the end of the war. Anakin never hesitated to kill a direct threat, and General Grievous was definitely a direct threat. Had Anakin engaged Grievous, most likely the cyborg general would be either completely incapacitated and captured, or killed (which IMO he would choose to do first). Palpatine couldn’t have this, as he said when Grievous actually was captured in the Clone Wars by the Gungans, because he was a key role in the whole war that Palpatine controlled. Had he lost Grievous too soon, everything could’ve fallen apart. There wouldn’t be another like Grievous to replace him with either, unlike with Dooku. Having the two meet both had negative outcomes, with either Anakin dying or Grievous dying, both ruining his whole plan. I also just love how we have all of this speculation because of one throw-away line in the movie, its pretty great.

I think Anakin would win. Grevious is used to his opponents fearing his and always being on the defensive and always on the back foot, while skywalker who is the opposite and his form 5 is defensive with rebounding powerful offense which grevious wouldn’t know how to handle cause he never faced anyone like that. Just like kenobi, kenobi wasn’t scared and went at grevious, as well as kit fisto, kit went at grevious making him look bad. Anakin would win.

There'd been dead Cyborg parts strung out all over the place and very likely as both pulled out all the stops HAD both decided they was gonna fight it out to the death... However his canon self is a laughing stock compared to his Legends self. I honestly would love a Disney+ Grevious series going over his ore cyborg self and his introduction into the clone wars. I agree with some of the comments below: Palpatine simply didn't want Grievous being killed before he was ready, it was all about "timing" for Palpatine ("Godfather: Part 1"); Grievous would be the reason (as we know from the movies) that Obi Wan wasn't there with Anakin when it is discovered who Palpatine actually is; Palpatine didn't do anything without a reason, & we know his obvious reason for being "such a good friend" to Anakin; not too mention, Anakin killed Dooku with no problem in the 3rd prequel movie, something Grievous was incapable of doing (let alone beating him while sparring); so it can just as easily be said that Palpatine did not orchestrate a meeting between Grievous & Anakin because he knew that Grievous was no match;

the worst thing you can do against canon or legends grievous is let your guard down and take the general for granted. anakin would do just that and that is the advatage grievous needs to have any chance of winning and win he could. anakins form 5 and it's powerful strikes is at a distinct disadvatage against someone who is far stronger than he is too, anakins main advantage is the force. If anakin keeps his head and takes him seriously grievous would shreaded, through his wits and force powers would allow him to easily find an opening including in the generals ego, but if he lets grievous get an inch he will take a mile and he will have no real ability to fight back as grievous's strikes him blow after blow far astronger, quicker, vicous with anakin no chance to use the force or his keen him to find a way out, anger would not save him here, he needs focus.

@@GrievousFrom Grievous is a good duelist, but if a force user is able to keep their mind straight they can just use the force to beat him for example mace windu crushed Grievous' chest while he was escaping after kidnapping Palpatine, it's why Grievous is such a agressive duelist and using scare tactics, fear weakens a Jedi's connection to the force and will be liable to make mistakes and keeping the pressure on the enemy leaves little space to figure out a plan of attack. so if Anakin just used his obscenely strong force powers to just crush Grievous then definitely works although if it was purely lightsaber work Grievous is a tricky bastard and it would be plausable for Grievous to gank Anakin This is also why Obi wan hard counters Grievous, not only has he fought multiple times and therefore can't be as easily intimidated, and Obi Wan's mastery of form 3 meant he could wait for his time to strik

One of the reasons Obi-Wan was chosen to face Grievous was due his his defensive Form III fighting style. The Jedi always said that he had completely mastered that form, and that’s why he was chosen, because he could easily defend against Grievous’s 4 arms, and multiple lightsabers. Anakin used form 5, which opposite to Obi-Wan’s, was allot more aggressive. If Anakin faced off against Grievous, I doubt he’d have the defensive skills to blocks Grievous’s multiple attacks. Now I’m not saying that Anakin can’t defend, it’s just he’s specialised more in physical, and aggressive attacks, and his defensive skills are nowhere near Obi-Wan’s, because Obi-Wan had truly mastered Form III. I just don’t think that Anakin would have the defensive skills to parry Grievous’s 4 lightsaber’s. The only attribute that could turn the tide, and give Anakin the win is the fact that Anakin can use the force, and Grievous can’t.

I think General Grievous would had won he had Obi Wan beat in their duel the only reason Obi Wan won is because of a gun and because the general got a little bit cocky like almost every opponent he fought in the prequels the only reason he was able to beat them is because the got cocky except for Count Dukko who basically destroy him on both duels but anyway i think the general would have beaten Anakin in a duel it wasn't until he became Darth Vader that he became a more calculated duelists then i think he would have beaten the general

Isn’t Grievous still just a droid though with 0 force capability? Couldn’t Anakin or Obi Wan for that matter just have force crushed him into a tin can since he couldn’t resist or use the force himself?

Grevious can dodge force attacks, Mace only got him because he was at the shuttle door, and could move off because he had to transport palpatine to his ship

For Grievous being such a "Monster" as you say he is clearly beaten a lot and not very powerfull. I would have thought its because Anakin would have killed him with ease and palpy ofc needed Grievous for the Clone wars.

One thing I don't understand about Grievous is why stop at 4 arms? why not 6? or 8 for that matter? 10? 12? the arms he could have had, the dangerous he would have been.

Anakin would have beaten grievous after a very difficult battle. Palps didn’t realize it at the time, but anakins victory would have been the will of the force. Although one could argue that it was the will of the force for palps to keep anakin from facing grievous, as grievous woulda killed him. Mysterious indeed.

I think we overthink many of these things, it might just be the fact that it should make sense in order to their meeting in the original movie to be the first meeting they have and thats it, then again, by overthinking its very cool that Dooku himself was just way better in mind games to push Anakin. Grevious would just be into fighting legit

My thoughts are that once the duel was completely enveloped, Anakin would have crushed Grievous with the force. Especially if Grievous had gotten the upper hand during the fight.

Because grevious was a smart and cunning warrior and anakins brashness and irrational thinking wouldve costed him his life. This exact disadvantage is the exact thing grevious wants and looks for while fighting. That is how he defeated durge and assaj ventress before becoming general. He finds the tiniest weakness and exploits it to the fullest of his ability.

Anakin would have destroyed Grievous. He actually would have pushed Anakin to tap into the dark side. Grievous was unstoppable to Padawans, and Jedi Knights, but not to the best of those Knights and many Jedi Masters. Remember Dooku taught Grievous he needed to break the greatest of the Jedi with fear and intimidation before he engaged them. That was the only way to beat them. Anakin's only fear was the loss of Padme'. He would have fought Grievous with a smile on his face. Combining force push and crush along with his saber work would have made it hard for Grievous to over whelm him. But if he did get the upper hand, Anakin would have ripped him apart with the force if he'd been out dueled.

Anakin would beat Grievous if they ever fought. But if they met too early in the war Anakin would have decimated him when Grievous was still needed or Grievous would have survived, learned from the fight, and become unbeatable and Grievous did have to eventually be destroyed.
