When I was a kid and I saw a transvestite, I could easily tell it was a man in a woman's dress and my childhood interpretation was this person was in disguise, this adult is pretending to be something he is not, and it has something to do with sex, and it made me feel threatened and uncomfortable. My instincts haven't changed.

@@Cowboycomando54 People who break boundaries and don't conform jsut for the sake of non-conforming have always gotten on everybodies nerves, or worse. This is no different. And especially men being like that can have a threatening undertone when it comes to skinwalking women. For comparison, an obvious fruity gay man dressing effeminately in 'girly' colours doesn't have that, he's at worst an eyesore that signals 'I'm so boring I have to make my loud clothes and the fact I like blokes my whole personality'. At best he's ... well, a fruity, gay man.

@@Cowboycomando54 it's not very complicated. If you can be made to feel guilty about discomfort then you are more likely to allow things that make you uncomfortable. As someone who has studied the theology of the Trinity, it has a biblical foundation -- both Hebrew and Christian texts. It is dogma based on millennia of human experience of God. No one is compelled to believe Christian dogma or any dogma. However, people are being compelled to believe trans ideology or lose their job, or risk being socially ostracised. This is a fundamentalist religion being touted as the promotion of human rights. To disagree with the religion is to be characterised as bigoted, hateful and violent. English theatre has a tradition of men playing women's parts in the context of theatre, because women were not allowed on stage. Dame Edna was not trans. She was a character played by Barry Humphries.

@@shooster5884 Hi...I'm not a spring chicken! I appreciate that the majority see panto as harmless entertainment and look no further than the the general humour...and I'm not completely humourless. I am fond of Lily Savage and Mrs Brown as characters...I admired the wit and I am also quite touched by some of the observational insight Paul O'Grady and Brendan OCarrol(l?) put into their female characters at times. I think for me, the panto thing is that it's generally making the dames grotesque and wicked and the heroes played by girls...its the specific contrast that grates on my nerves and I'm not a fan of farce. However, I fully appreciate that it doesnt need to be that deep and that there are lovely childhood memories of having a family special treat and a bit of fun together, and I really dont mean to try and tarnish that lovely innocent pleasure with my cynicism. If it isn't socially acceptable for white people to dress up / pretend to be black people for comedic / entertainment purposes, it should be just as socially unacceptable for males to dress up as females. The fact that dudes have been doing it a long time isn't an excuse. Minstrel shows were once a tradition that black people went along with. I don't imagine we'll be able to abolish drag within my lifetime, but we should at least be putting forward the idea that drag is sexist garbage even when there's no children and no sexuality involved. Obviously involving kids and exposing them to overt sexuality makes it worse, but that's far from the only problem.
@jhb1493
@jhb1493 Ай бұрын
Follow that logic through. Going to ban women from wearing men's clothing, like jeans or pants? I'm sure you'll find that suggestion ridiculous because somehow women are oppressed or some other womanist exuse that makes it ok. As for comparing Drag to Minstrel shows - that's a hard reach. Society had a lot of highly negative beliefs about black people that the Minstrel Shows exploited and reinforced. Can you argue that about drag queens? You claim drag is "sexist garbage" but who in their right mind would ever look at a drag queen and think 'yes, this is a reflection of actual women, this is exploitation". If you can't differentiate between parody or homage and sexism, I'm not sure I'd want you having the power to ABOLISH anything. You're a slippery slope just waiting to happen.

He didn't mention that slavery was also seen as perfectly normal. A straight female professor showed us a photo of a naked girl and asked us to debate when a photo of a girl becomes sexualised, e.g. an image of her with down-cast eyes might or might not be interpreted as sexualised. This is why the law doesn’t allow children to marry, engage in contractual agreements, become airline pilots etc, etc, etc……..they are simply not mature enough to understand the complexity of what they are getting into.
