Regarding the Duke thing, it sounds like this woman was trying to protect the international students from professors who were aiming to punish students for using a language other than English among themselves. My ex's first language was Chinese and sometimes speaking Chinese to a fellow Chinese speaker was just easier for her. She could speak English just fine, but sometimes it's simply faster to speak your native language and there's less chance for error. Or maybe they were simply having a friendly, casual conversation between each other and it shouldn't matter what language you're speaking to your friend. I'm in my 30's and I will still say "dude" a lot when I'm having a conversation with my friends at work. You don't need to be 100% professional all the time. That's not how the real world works and if your place of employment is so strict that you can't speak in a relaxed manner with your colleagues, that is a bad place to work.

As a non-native English speaker, I can tell you that it is really awkward to speak English with someone you know speaks the same language as you do. @@indigocrayon520 which is perfectly fine in your case. Not being able to speak in an ASL class makes sense. It forces you to actually try to learn the language. In this case, the professors have no authority on what students do, or do not do after class. These students were not speaking during class, but were just having a personal conversation in the building (again, not the classroom). It's a ridiculous request when it deals with mandating what students do in their private time. I'm actually not even that upset at the Director of Graduate Studies, she was trying to deal with the situation (albeit, very poorly). The problem I have is with the professors who were basically profiling the two students in order to reject their future internship applications based on what they decide to do on their spare time. It is a ridiculous request.

This teacher clearly, by the tone of the email, didn't personally want them to stop speaking their language, but understood the threats made by the faculty and wanted to warn their students. I studied abroad and didn't speak the local language very well when I arrived. From my personal experience, it is a very easy temptation to seek out other people from your own country and just speak your native language with them. However, that's not helping you learn the local language any faster. I remember intentionally isolating myself from the group to rather mingle with students from the country I was in. It was hard, but it was the best decision I could have made. After a few years, I was speaking the local language fluently, which resulted in me having better grades overall, better skills for my Master's thesis and, ultimately, better prospects on the local job market. What I think the DUKE teacher was trying to do, was to look out for her students. She might have known of the "dangers" to isolate yourself in a native language group and wanted to warn them about the unintended consequences they might have not been aware of. Did she do it in a very clumsy way? Yes. Was she racist or were her intentions harmful? Absolutely not. If anything, she deserves praise for trying to help her students.

It's a special situation with Chinese students though. I taught some of them German at my university, so I've come to know a few. The vast majority of them don't want to mingle with anyone but themselves. You might find the odd one out in a hundred of them who hasn't been all comsumed by the system they've been brought up with. They're learning the language, because that's what's expected of them, but other than that, they're not interested in the people or anything that's different. Was really sad to see and I really tried to get them out of that shell, but no chance. I guess the frustration to see that might've influenced the Duke prof, too.

I can tell that the woman had good intentions but worded her email wrong which is sad because my very first language was Spanish but when I started school the teachers would all yell at me to only speak English because we live in America and even though I was learning English I still struggled with it so I eventually just stopped talking at school because I rather not be yelled at and embarrassed in front of everyone. Sadly because of that I have forgotten some Spanish and I sometimes struggle with it, so I can't even have a full conversation with my grandma and sometimes even my dad who only speak Spanish. I just wished that my teachers back then would have been more understanding, patient and supportive of my situation.

At school I was able to speak both english and Spanish. One doesn't have to speak full english in a setting. Other languages are helpful for other people. It's uncalled for to make english superior and bullshit when there is many languages around the world.

No, she worded her e-mail perfectly reasonably. She did not demand that they stop, she did not imply that action would be taken against them if they didn't stop. She was rather supportive of them, and actually looking out for them, as universities, regardless of where in the world you are expect the students to hold themselves to the highest degree, pointing out that the faculty, not specific members, but the team as a whole, might see such actions as not living up to that standard. It seems obvious that they came to America to learn English, almost certainly because knowing even basic English is a requirement for almost any well-paying job in the modern world, whether English is your native language or not. It was the people who complained about her asking, not ordering, them to practice English in their spare time around other English-speakers, that blew the entire situation out of proportion.

@@setofreakinkaiba8553 Except English is the primary language in the States...so it's not uncalled for at all. Fortunately for non-English speakers, schools and universities tend to hire multicultural professors. Regardless, what does there being many languages around the world have to do with anything? Of course, other languages exist that's not at all what's being disputed. Now, to counter what you said if a native English speaker goes to any other foreign country where English is neither a primary or secondary language then what do you expect would happen? You would have to learn and adapt and those other countries would be hypocritical to state otherwise. As someone who is also bilingual and comes from a multicultural city in the States, it doesn't change the fact that the US, just like any other country, has their own primary language and it is obligatory to learn and practice. It has nothing to do with superiority. If her intention was to inform the foreign students about using English in professional settings, she said nothing wrong but could've expressed herself better. If anything, the faculty members are the ones who should be investigated because it seems like they were the ones trying to cause problems and she was trying to prevent the students from getting in trouble.

I don't think anybody was being racist. I can see both sides of it. I am a dysgwr (a Welsh second language speaker) and there is a problem in Wales of native Welsh speakers talking insultingly about other people right in front of them in Welsh because they believe they can get away with it without being understood. It can be quite upsetting. In addition, if you're in a small group setting and socializing together I can definitely see how it could be rude to speak a language that the others in the group don't speak, unless they'd said they were fine with it, because you're immediately excluding them from the conversation. But just standing around in a public space and speaking a foreign language, I honestly don't see the problem with that. It seems inexplicable to me that anybody on the university staff would object. Not least of all because studying in a foreign language can be exhausting, and it's just nice to take a break and revert to your own language when you're around friends. It would only matter if they were saying unkind things about other people passing by.

It's not that we're trying to improve our French, it just how we've communicated for over 20~ years now. If we was to say something private we would talk in French. If someone was to come up to me and ask me to stop speaking French for any reason then I'd be deeply offended. Why would it matter what language I'm speaking in if the person I'm talking to can understand me? I feel if the situation was in France with a person speaking English, then it would be much more relatable for most people. If the argument was they was in a lesson teaching English and they decided to speak Chinese , understandable, and a case can also be made for them speaking loudly. This is just ridiculous.

If they aren't doing it during a class or whilst they are talking with a group of other English students or a teacher there is no reason for them to do this other than to hone their linguistic skills, but this is more a personal thing that is different from student to student and not something that should be discussed in an E-Mail addressed to all foreign students.

I have definitely noticed that people can get uncomfortable when people of any race are speaking in a different language. Personally I do get uncomfortable, but not because I don’t want them speaking that language. It’s mainly because I can’t understand what they are saying, and it just makes me kind of mad at myself for not being able to understand. It’s kind of like hearing a bunch of Physics PhDs talk. This is a feeling that I have been able to sideline overtime because I have become more experienced with it. However, I can’t say the same for everyone. As I said before, for me personally it’s because I get upset at myself that I can’t understand it (which isn’t rational I know), for others it’s because they aren’t experienced with others doing that. I definitely think the professor had the right intentions by letting the students know that there are people out there who may think different of them if they hear them speak a different language. The world is a changing place. For example, if you were speaking english in a chinese school, you would be looked at heavily in an unfair light. Particularly in their "social credit" system, you know, just the thing that they evaluate you on all your online presence. Why would a professor sign on an intern.. If they have no idea if they can speak correct english? If they're living in America and talking in chinese casually, this represents a real threat to a language barrier a professor cannot have in a professional setting. Some people just really need to think about the consequences of their actions and not be so triggered when they find out people do not accept all kinds.
@Howtard5 жыл бұрын
I'm just confused now, I was under the impression that it was the "unnamed faculty" who wanted names in order to blacklist the students for future internships. As far as I could tell she was just trying to warn foreign students that there are racists among the faculty, and to use caution in public spaces when using native languages. Maybe it's my own comprehension failing but that was my impression of it, and based on that I don't think she did anything wrong. Rash and reactionary perhaps, but it was out of fear for the students' wellbeing so it's eminently forgivable.

Also the fact that the women mentioned that two faculty members wanted to hurt their chances for internships and projects just cuz they didn’t like that they’re bilingual and where speaking another language screams of discrimination and the school needs to investigate.

I understand to a degree the thought that the students at Duke wouldn't be making every effort they could to improve their English. As a linguist and trained Engligh as Second Language teacher, I know that practice and use is the best way to improve any additional language. However, people who would say that it's rude to others that can't understand Chinese are ridiculous. No one has the right to eavesdrop on a conversation. It's a public space, but a private conversation, and no one "deserves" to understand what is being said. People constantly use language that is unable to be interpreted by eavesdroppers (pronouns like "him" referring to a person that isn't there but both conversationalists know about, for example), but we don't feel the need to butt in and ask "hey I noticed you're talking about someone, who?"

@@historicaldough it's important to speak the language that is dominant in the circumstance. Because you are being taught to only speak that when in a work environment. The boss lectured us both for making mistakes. But it wouldn't have been my fault because I was being trained improperly. It's policy to only speak the main language only for that reason. It's good to be bilingual, but keep your own language out of classes and work environments so it doesn't become a problem. If I were the teacher I would be concerned that one is asking a question about the class work and you have no idea if the other student is giving good advice or not. I'm an academic (US Master's student) and my biggest issue with the Duke story is actually that the two professors that were 'disturbed' by another language were protected. Academia has a problem with universities and other academics/professors consistently protect themselves over their own students, and that's one reason why there can be such a toxic atmosphere that can include harassment/abuse (emotional, sexual, ect) and a culture of overwork. While I appreciate that the professor who sent the email was trying to keep her students best interests in mind, it would have been much better for her to call our her fellow profs. But I can also see that since she was just an assistant professor (and having women professors is still pretty rare) she may have been uncomfortable or felt unable to call them out.

It sounds like that teacher was telling students to watch out for other discriminatory teachers that would punish them as a result of speaking in a different language, which is obviously not something that people were aware of. Regardless of whether she went to the news or sent out a public email, she warned her students rather than keeping it secret, and was concerned for them. Why would anyone call her the racist lol, she called out bigoted people for their bs, and went out of her way to spread the word. The only thing I could fault her on is trying to help the students by saying “please be careful about what language you speak, there are people who will put it against you!” rather than saying “the school shouldn’t be doing this discrimination in the first place.”
@Koujoung5 жыл бұрын
I don't think she's racist, but she definitely executed this in a VERY poor way. Regardless of what she wrote in her letter, this was a response to a complaint from two faculty members who had a problem with the students speaking Chinese (to each other no less), and wanted them blacklisted for it. So, if I'm an international student, I can't speak my language with other students who speak the same language? Should American students who go to France or Germany to study be forced to only speak French and German on campus (assuming they even know those languages)? Her focus should have been to refute those faculty members because what they were saying was reprehensible, but instead she took their side and bears part of the responsibility. It is unfair though that she's had to take the entire blame for this and those two faculty members haven't been publicly shamed.

I’m confused about the Duke University case. The initial complaint in the first email is that a group of Chinese students speaking Chinese loudly in the student study area. So shouldn’t the topic of the first email be “please be quiet in the public study area”? Instead, those professors shift the problem to “not speaking English at school”. If you really want to help international students to learn English, how about encouraging communication with native speakers or joining special seminars in another separate email? Why do you have to “help” others in a such unpleasant way?
@OnionKnightRises5 жыл бұрын
That's the biggest problem with this, the teacher herself did such a poor job at conveying what she wanted to. An issue at my school is when this occurs - loud conversations that can become disruptive, and staff not knowing the language and if the nature of conversation is appropriate. I agree the email was poorly worded, but on both sides I see where the students and staff were coming from. Obviously people have the right to speak their language as they choose and not to be racially targeted for this, but I also do know many of my close friends will switch to mandarin to speak negatively about a teacher/student/etc without them knowing. However, I do understand how the email can come off as insensitive.

Also, it was on us to speak to other people in sign language and deaf people. The teacher had no obligation to tell fully grown adults to talk to other people in sign language. IF her claims were legitimate and professors asked for their names to potentially bar them for career or academic prospects, she was doing them a favor and helping. As a fellow American I know this all too well. People are not comfortable when people or groups speak in different languages. (Maybe in other countries as well). This shows that she was on their side, and trying to get them the best outcome possible. I saw nothing in those emails that showed that she was upset with them speaking the language at all. In fact I can't understand how people could be angry at her for the first email in question. It's a warning regarding other professors actions. Unfortunately all this media craze has done has prevented people like Neely from warning good students about what's actually going on.

Well, I have to disagree. Someone speaking a foreign language is not a cause for discomfort (at least in a reasonable context). In a professional setting, such as class, an internship, or a job, of course it would make sense to speak English. They was these emails were interpreted (which matters immensely) was that it was a veiled threat to their success in school. In a lounge, foreign students have all the right to speak in a foreign language. Were they too loud? Perhaps, but they should've been reprimanded only on their volume, not the language they were speaking.

The point was that she was warning them of other professors potential bad behavior, that could impact the students future. Not to reprimand them. (As far as I can infer with the emails given.) I obviously can't rule out the possibility that she was potentially annoyed as well, but there are no indicators in her emails. A large amount of Americans are afraid of other languages taking a foothold in our society. While it is likely an illogical fear, this fear does exist in many spheres, including academia.

But then I have the problem where speaking Spanish all the time tires me out. The discrimination has always been there and she is the only person who’s kind enough to remind us of the reality. I as well as most of my friends regard her as the hero.

Being from an Australian Uni it can be real rough when you have to work with the students on assignments that don't learn english enough because you can be stuck spending 5-10 hours correcting all their work because it is riddled with broken english and it is almost a given to be working with these students because there is so many of them.
@dirkstrickland1355 жыл бұрын
jesus barrera Graduate programs in the US all require applicants to pass TOFEL( Test of English as Foreign Language), especially for prestigious institutions like Duke which requires very high level of language proficiency. It’s very unlikely that those students were poor in English. Additionally, those two faculties had problem with them speaking Chinese, not their English proficiency. They didn’t even know the names of the Chinese students for F sake. Graduate-level researches are often tedious and time consuming. I generally spend hours in the lab waiting for the data to be collected and analyzed. While waiting for results, I would have casual talks with my colleagues, sometimes in Chinese when there are only Chinese students. Languages are meant to be used for communications. Me and my Chinese colleagues are proficient in both Chinese and English and we choose the language we use to communicate. That’s all it is.
@isabella-89595 жыл бұрын
@@dirkstrickland135 yeah, I suspected the faculty members didn't have good intentions. I was just telling the "Australian" experience or whatever. I'm not sure the English tests my uni provides, but most foreign students here can understand English but can't speak it well. So in classes where we do group work, communication can be difficult. Or even, the foreign students may feel secluded and outcasted? Because of the language barrier? practice makes perfect. We don't have any negative repercussions though for speaking another language. So there's that.
@supahero005 жыл бұрын
Pertaining to the Duke University debacle, there is no credible evidence that she was trying to be racist on any level with her trying to give them information regarding common decency. It is a cultural difference when it comes to communication and how it happens. Some cultures are just louder than others. Some would take offense to the level on which they speak because in their culture loudness is considered aggressive behavior. And if someone is new to this country or its culture those things are not common knowledge. Furthermore, when gathering with your own, your sense of comfort it heightened in turn giving you a sense of cultural license. Far too many people are thin-skinned these days I'm kinda be triggered by the slightest figurative sneeze of any Spectrum. I find it quite exhausting.

As someone of mixed race I am a big believer in integrating and mixing but I'm not against using your own mother tongue. I HAVE noticed that Chinese students are usually the most insular demographic who don't like to mingle with with UK , European, American, Middle Eastern, African students. This is in the UK but if it's like here I can understand where the prof was coming from. It obviously shouldn't impact their career options but I can see the concern about some students not having a full experience of living in the country and working with new people from a different culture. From my experience we see Chinese/East Asian students not use communal study spaces or labs, talk exclusively in Chinese/whatever language they speak at home, and generally don't mingle and make friends with anyone from outside their cliques when I don't see the same issues with other groups of students. There is a sizeable contingent of Bulgarians in my year and Polish in the year below as well as a scattering of Americans but they make many friends not just from their home country.

@Lusty First amendment rights should not matter much in this case, i dont think the main issue is that foreign students speaking their language but rather speaking it in the classroom, i dont think anyone has an issue with groups of foreign students speaking their own language during breaks but as she said in a "professional environment" its extremely rude to go into another country for such a time and not learn the language or culture, they need to in order to get through the class, they aint gonna cater to exchange students the students have to fit the system, whether they be natural English speakers or not.

It's called an asian bubble. Being asian myself, I grew up in both asia and a western country and what you said is very true and is easily observable everywhere you go. Another thing is, usually in asian bubbles, having been in multiple, they are often (but definitely not all of course) quite rude or racist themselves. If you're living in an english speaking language to work or study, then you should be (or at least try to be) speaking English in public, especially if you're going to be loud and rude.
@stevechris86975 жыл бұрын
I assume that she and other faculty members believe that study areas are a professional setting, i can see your point but when in professional institutions you are expected to speak the tongue of the place, this is in every county with Asia being quite harsh on not learning the language, im cool and all with people speaking their own language, but maybe, while just at those places, try to speak the language of the people around you. I dont agree with the whole "being so impolite as to have a conversation that not everyone on the floor could understand,” or potentially threatening future prospects but i understand her and other members wanting exchange students to speak the language of the county they are learning in, they will need the language to get into internships and masters programs so why hire people they perceive as not bothering to learn the language, however i do think its just people speaking to their own people in their own tongue and not indicative of them not learning English.

But both sides dont ever talk to each other and most Americans make fun of them but I dont know what the Chinese kids think of the American students tho

I think that speaking in a different language while others are participating in the group is rude, BUT nowhere does she say that whilst in the professors presence were they doing this. She said that they were being loud an disruptive in the building WHILE speaking Chinese. If they’re being disruptive in an academic building then reprimand them as such, do not reprimand them just because they are speaking in a language you don’t understand. I have professors who will converse with fellow professors in the hallway in their native language like Russian, French, Chinese, but I don’t feel like they are being rude to me. They are just doing what makes them feel the most comfortable. If I was in a conversation with the two of them and they started speaking in a different language, then yes I would feel a bit disrespected. But they are free to do whatever they want otherwise. I am a bilingual and so are so many of my peers, especially in fields of science it is inevitable. Let people do what makes them feel comfortable, they are at the university because of passing an English language test meaning their standards of English are already met. Why should anyone “take advantage” of practicing their English when they have nothing to prove to their peers who are more comfortable speaking in their shared language.

Natasha Smith it says in the email she sent out that they were speaking very loudly. If they were being loud and disruptive in an academic setting, then the email should have addressed their volume and not the language they were speaking which is the point I’m trying to make...”According to Neely, her colleagues wanted to identify students they had observed “speaking Chinese (in their words, VERY LOUDLY)” in the student lounge and study areas.”
@Trixie00265 жыл бұрын
The woman sending the email is not racist. She is giving an advice, yes it is badly worded but at least she didn't speak mean things in their back like the two other teachers. But, it is actually very common for people to have those kind of expectations towards international students. When I was in highschool (in a French school) it was forbidden for any students to speak another language than French even during lunch or breaks. If you were caught speaking another language (outside language classes) you could get a warning or a detention. I can understand why a teacher could send an email like that, the students are in a English environment and are expected to speak English, but if they aren't in class, especially In University, there shouldn't be any laguage police. the real problem isn't her, it is the other teachers saying that they are lazy.

The thing is when those faculty members asked for the photo roster, she could have taken it as an opportunity to educate them and tell them that it's wrong. But no! She GAVE the photo roster to them, enabling their actions. After all, the students weren't even in class. If I'm talking to my friend in another language, it's literally non of anybody else's business.

But yeah really akward situation and hopefully those students gets formal excuses.

I'm from North Carolina and this is how our entire state runs, racist. I'm sick of reading the comments of its rude that not everyone can understand, IT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY. If they wanted everyone to know they would speak in the little bit of English they know. They are already struggling to learn in a new language let them study comfortably in their primary language. The fact that a professor was threatening to not encourage internships or projects just because they are choosing to speak another language in a COMMON ROOM is terrible and disrespectful to the intelligence and capability of that person. Yes she wants them to continue to improve their English but that should be only in the classroom setting at the most, not in a personal setting. I've seen other comments about how we Americans speak only English in other countries because typically that's what most of us can only speak, that in which is also very true, we feel privileged to speak a language like English but it is the most difficult language to learn.
@katienoelle37855 жыл бұрын
I have worked with exchange students and have been an exchange student myself. Avoiding speaking your native language really does help you learn a new language and it helps you adapt to the new culture. My exchange student organization has always encouraged the students to always speak in the language of the country they are studying in.

Speaking from the point of view of living in a country with over 20 scheduled and countless more widely spoken languages, this Duke thing is so strange. Anytime you head to the college canteen on my campus you can hear at least 5-6 distinct languages being spoken. I'll understand maybe 2-3 of them and it's so hard for me to understand why anyone thinks speaking only one language is a sign of integration or generally a good thing. Neely was maybe trying to protect students from other malicious staff members but the way she worded her email is just tone deaf.
@CSI2b5 жыл бұрын
First of all, that Duke professor was an assistant professor which means she was doing the best she could with the resources she had since she very likely didn’t have tenure or was coming up on going in front of a tenure review board. Could she have reported the issue? Sure, but it may have ruined her career and caused the same amount of problems she is having now because she would likely have been reporting tenured professors with funding and power. I reported sexual harassment in grad school and you know what they did? Absolutely jack shit. That is the way academia works and the people in it know that. There is no accountability for older professors and limited accountability for younger ones. The best the department will do is try and steer students away from professors with the most complaints. Second, while I don’t condone the vindictive behavior of the professors mentioned in the email, I do understand their point of view. The issue was not that they were having a conversation in Chinese; it was a sign to the professors of a larger problem. The real issue is that many students come to the US to study and are barely able to speak the language despite what their test scores indicate (Non-native speakers do generally have to pass a proficiency test when applying for grad school). This makes it incredibly difficult for other students, professors, as well as the students themselves. Despite what is advertised, what professors are looking for is competent students who can come in and make them look good. That is very difficult if you can’t speak the language especially well and therefore can’t communicate effectively at a graduate school level. This is particularly true in the sciences as specific wording and semantics can change the meaning of an entire presentation. While this may or may not have been the case with these particular students (many students come over and are excellent speakers in both English and their native language), that is the general concern for students in that situation.

@jamesotaji33345 жыл бұрын
The main problem here is this: To be accepted into a university in the US or Canada as an international student, you need to get an 'A' in language proficiency test so if those people are students then it means that they know how to speak English. Speaking English when you are among people who speak your native language is the equivalent of writing a formal email to you mom instead of just texting her - you can do that but the text is far more comfortable. Also, International students are not foreign exchange students and they are not immigrants. They are essentially tourists going to school - they can speak whatever they want as long as they understand the language they are being instructed in.

Something similar to the Duke email thing happening in my high school my freshmen year. Several students where talking very loudly in spanish walking down the hallway (well call it B). Hallway B is where the english learning center was at the time. I was there when it happened. The students where walking to the culinary class, but the EL Assistant teacher scolded them for not practicing their english more, and even said he was going to dock their grades because part of their grades was 'practice' (but the other teacher who actually designed the curriculum said that it ONLY meant in HER class and was like a participation grade, 20 minuets of the class was supposed to be spent trying their best to uphold a conversation in english and english alone). Everyone was super pissed off about it, the whole school basically made him into a symbol for racism in the school, oh it was UGLY. He kept saying that he really just meant the best for the students and wanted them to grow more and fit in the school better. He ended up quitting after the sixth time someone targeted his room for repeated vicious pranking. (which, by the by, not the best way to handle it.) Chinese students holding a conversation in their native language outside the classroom isnt them slacking off or not practicing. Fuck it maybe they didnt WANT you to understand it. Or what they were discussing they just didnt know the words for, or about 100 other explainations that all branch back to one answer. Non ya daymned business fuckface.

That email from Duke University looked well-intentioned, but it isn't a good look for the staff member or the university when she specifically points out the students' language preference and essentially passes on a veiled threat from other staff members over job prospects without criticising the threat and instead treating it like its a natural consequence. I also think the two staff members in question should be punished, though not Neely herself.

That professor had good intentions, but a horrible approach to the situation. It would have been much more appropriate to send those emails to the faculty that were actively being racist. I went to a university with a huge foreign population and I always thought it was heart warming to see other foreigners speaking their native tongue. I am sure it was nice for them to find a place of comfort after being thrust into a wold of new flying thousands of miles away from their home. We also had plenty of international professors that had trouble with English, so maybe Duke needs some more diversity and inclusivity in their staff.
