If you came into Elden Ring expecting a linear Souls title, you played yourself from the get go. The game wants you to explore before speed running into the main bosses, it makes sense. There’s plenty of mini bosses to grind up before going down the main story
@xxdevilx32 жыл бұрын
Spot on! Some people don't understand the idea of exploration and progression. The reason margit is a hard boss is because fromsoft wants the players to explore limgrave first and see what the open world has to offer. It is genius in my opinion because if you're really good at the game you can kill margit at a low level but if you suck - like most people - you retaliate and explore the world to become better in every aspect. The game naturally guides you to make that decision.

Not just that but of these open world games Elden Ring, imo, laid things out pretty well. Rarely is there an area that doesn’t reward a little exploring and sometimes (like where summit was) you go back there once you obtain something. That being said, I think FROM did a good job on letting the player know that you should try exploring other places because the Tree sentinel that is right outside the first step already should explain to the player that fighting them is an option and just because it's the first thing you see in the open area doesn't mean it should be fought.

@@debrabarber3483 I get wanting a difficulty option because I am someone who believes games should have some accessibility for players but overall it comes down to the vision and marketing of the game. With that out of the way, Elden Ring is pretty well another Dark Souls game under another IP IMO, that being said in all of those games there has never been microtransactions, or multiplayer required. The closest thing you had to accessibility was to summon an AI or someone in, but I know a few people, including myself, like to play these games solo first for the experience and the challenge. The game doesn't need to be coop only or MMO and has proved that through its other games and its success here. There are other people who share similar opinions as you have shared and it seems to come down to the same reasoning which is this game is to challenging to be considered fun or accesible to your needs. I think it is an unfair and biased opinon to say this game forces coop and grinding and feel that comes from frustration from accessibility, because like you said, a lot of friends say the game is fun and between consumer reviews and profressional critics, the game scoring great and being well recieved by most. What I really like about this game compared to others in the souls series, is that when you are faced with a boss that you are having a hard time against, the game allows you to explore the vast map to fight enemies and maybe find another boss that may be easier or even just to clear your mind. Being able to explore the open world is a genius way to let new players and casuals to build their characters to a point where they can take the main bosses on. It makes the game a lot more accessible in a smarter way than just throwing in a gaming journalist mode in that just fudges the game's numbers a bit.
@nathantower55652 жыл бұрын
The biggest game design flaw is that they sit there and tell you to go to bosses you have no chance of beating. There's no series of bosses that get harder over time that lead up to the important bosses. Instead of the general formula which would still be completely usable in the open world they threw it all away and made a wander fest that a ton of people don't like.
@mello63112 жыл бұрын
@@nathantower5565 What are you talking about dude? You're making it sound like the game gets in your face and says "GO FIGHT THE MAIN BOSS YOU COWARD DO IT NOW RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING" the game gives you an almost missable way of telling you where to go if you want to take on the main bosses. Key word being *if* you want to. The game has tons of bosses littered around that vary in difficulty and you can tell how difficult a boss will be based on the mobs surrounding it. It's not some mystery to figure out how bosses work. Can you fight all the mobs leading up to a boss relatively easily with little to no health loss? Then you're gonna be able to handle the boss. Is there some grinding if you want to be able to fight bosses properly and take them on without getting your shit pushed in on 2 seconds? Yea, but the other games had that too. But you can easily wipe the first 3 or so side bosses you can encounter with starting gear and skills, (aside from Tree Sentinel) if you have the gameplay down. As for the "wander fest a ton of people don't like" I have hardly seen anyone complain about the open world aspect, considering you can't move 5 feet in any direction a majority of the time without bumping into enemies. Sure sometimes there are areas where there isn't a whole lot going on but I guarantee if they did what you wanted and placed enemies every few feet like the og games, people would hate it far more than you're claiming cuz it would be totally unfair and a slog.

These games including Elden Ring are actually very smart with how it shows the player what is feasible without forcing it on them. when exploring Limgrave you find enemies and materials that suite your level and as you move to other areas enemies become increasingly more challenging along with the rewards becoming bigger. if you go farther east and hit an enemy and barely do any damage and get alot of runes then thats a clear sign as a player that this place out of your league but it also doesn't force you to leave or block its location. this allows for player freedom while creating a natural course of progression. Having trouble with Margit? its not a filter its just a natural point to show what is waiting for you past that point in the castle. if you're barely doing damage then your weapon might need to be upgraded and you can also get more levels by fighting dungeon bosses. still need some help? well then there is always summons and co-op.

My exploration was rewarded, my inquisition was rewarded, even my multitude of deaths were rewarded by learning move sets of dragons early on. When I came back after 20 hours of exploring and being wowed by the world, I found him, kicked his ass, and did the same for the rest of the area. the thing is you dont really need to explore ether I beat Margit with just the wolfs and levels that i had ground off the enemy's in the entrance gate. hell the only seed I had was the starting gift and 9 levels. margit has no chill but the problem is you have all these streamers who have not really played a souls game before and they don't take the time to play how you need to play a souls game which is a combination of greedy and patient. I walked up got the floor wiped with my face. I instantly started throwing down my summon mark so that i could study the boss and see how other players were approaching it and with out risk to myself they get a person to help and I get a free study. I beat Margit while underleveled, he could 1 shot me with his hammer, but I was stubborn and kept at it for about 5 hours until I didn't get hit at all. Once I beat him I felt relieved but also exhausted, after roaming and fighting a few bosses I realized that I was severely underleveled for Margit. Afterwards I began trying to level and haven't had any issues with other bosses with the exception of a few. People need to learn that there are different ways to play a game than what they're used to. Its not entirely the games fault that people are bad or refuse to learn, bosses have set patterns and you can face tank and hope for the best or try to learn the patterns and make it easier for yourself. Many good veterans of souls games learned to do it that way, and it was thru trial and error that I learned. The game didn't necessarily have to tell me because I took a step back and thought to myself "What am I doing wrong that is getting me killed here?"

I agree with 95% what he said but I have to half disagree with the whole “filter” part. Is is a word used by egotists? Yes. There definitely exists people who wants to feel superior by belittle players, who are struggling and reaching a point of frustration, further by saying something like “lol you just got filtered bro” etc. However I think it’s false to state that devs put in these difficult enemies or bosses to actively “filter” their customers. I believe that any sort of bump along the way of a game is for the devs to encourage the player to learn something different. I sucked so much at games that I actually had trouble with bokoblins in BotW hard mode. I didn’t expect them to be this beefy, regen, or pose a very high risk as a mob. So what do I do? I simply leave them alone and learned along the way to use all the tools and tricks in the bag without having to bash my head against them repeatedly. Same with Margrit for me. Granted this is on a different scale but once I realize that I have no knowledge or the tools to take him on I just opted to leave. I mean it’s not like the game was actively trying to railroad me into fighting him either, no? You had almost full exploration of the world without even beating him. So yeah, I just don’t think Margrit was just there to purposely discourage players into quitting. Also on the side note I don’t think it’s just soulsborne players who have this railroad mentality. I believe it’s the majority of gamers these days. Games lately have been so linear that people automatically expect the game to go step by step to be like the instructions of a manual. So when a game encourages you to try things differently people just assume that it is done out of some malicious intent against the player. And it’s a shame because it just allows the bad actors to run with that false narrative to create a rift between players, and between players and the game it self.

I mean I'm enjoying it but there are a lot of open areas that you just quickly run around with your horse to find some new content stuff. I disagree that you find important items often unless you think of crafting items as important. Like the area you see once you leave the starting cave where the Tree Sentinel is. That same area you see every in the world, just so many very similar looking areas. This is completely different from their other games. Even in Bloodborne which is quite dark/black you still always knew that you found a new spot, sometimes I'm running around on my horse and I think that I ran back to where I came from because it looks the same. Of course there are new areas but there isn't enough variation imo. RDR2 is open world and has different problems but I thought their world building was excellent I think this is definitely a weak point in Elden Ring. Copy/paste dungeons, copy/paste animations, copy/paste weapons. It's just a little bit sad. I expected a fully unique experience like Sekiro. Instead we got Dark Souls 4 Open World edition. I enjoy the game but I rate it the lowest of their Souls like games.

People bought Elden Ring expecting it to be a game you didn’t have to put a lot into but if you want to experience the game and have a good time exploration is a must or you’ll never access other weapons , talisman, craftables , and even secrets that can help with some bosses . People fail to realize this game is open world for the main reason for allowing you to leave one place and get stronger if you are struggling . Like for instance there’s a whole item that can lock Margit down for like 3 seconds and can be used twice in the fight . Most people never come across it because once they get to Margit they think the only two things they can do is fight him to proceed or fight the tree spirit when both can be skipped for a long ass time .

It always absolutely blows my mind when people complain about difficulty in these games. This game has more difficulty sliders than any other souls game ever made. The starting class and gift options are actually useful magic is broken in pve just like always You can summon other players and the game becomes horrendously easy You can summon npc's with ash who are better than player summons once upgraded. You can always explore and become over leveled and just come back later. There is never a point where you're forced to win a fight. The tedious walk of shame back to the boss has been completely removed with checkpoints. Bows have actually been made pretty strong with weapon arts and you can even start with one. Armor has been made incredibly effective when optimized so the best answer isn't necessarily to just be naked and roll better. Guard counters were added so you can be rewarded for turtling and you can even start with a 100% phys mitigation shield. This game is at all points precisely as hard as you want to make it for yourself. At every step of the way you choose not just how hard you want it to be, but also in what ways it's difficult. You don't have to engage with any of those systems and you'll have a hard time but whenever you struggle you can employ any number of them to succeed.

I put 20 hours into the game running around, completely missed Margit until I watched another streamer beeline to him and proceed to get pounded for 2 hours. Yeah, hes slightly too brutal for a first boss, especially as an early heavy weapon build. Blocking smacks out your whole stamina bar, he can attack three times in your one swing, armor makes you take 60% hp a hit instead of 80% (still two hits!) I've had a lot of fun just picking some odd looking thing on the map and seeing what it is, running past anything that I can't kill quickly on my way. There are a lot of caves, dungeons, ruins, some weird puzzle towers, etc. And many of them have much more forgiving bosses that give you some interesting gear or magic or upgrade materials. I'll tackle Margit again when I feel like it. It's kind of like back in DS1 where you just blitzed past enemies just to get a little more info and make more progress towards the next bonfire. Or heading another direction because you realize the cave full of reanimating skeletons is too difficult after just starting the game.

Elden ring is a masterpiece because it is accessible, but difficult. No from soft game has ever given players so many options for exploration, and the player must utilize exploration to beat margit. I personally don’t like how accessible elden ring is. I fear that they’ll listen to much to the community. I think a lot of people got used to games where they just "blindly" follow the "quest". And I think for the people that haven't dabbled in Soul like games or anything similar they would just go ham, balls deep, no rubber into Margit since that is what the game tells them to do despite it being an indication that after getting their asses handed they have to explore different options to gear up. Also I think the reason why other first bosses aren't that hard is because there was literally nowhere else viable to go to or easily accesible. In this game, being a massive open world, players that take time exploring are surely rewarded with more time to gear up and face easy bosses/dungeons/side quests before facing the main shit.

But that’s a problem early on in some games. Me personally I haven’t played the game, but watching and bowing that I have to go spin 4 side blocks and sweep a couple areas before the “first boss” already makes me not care or what to put too much time into it. I think there's a sneaky theme hidden in the arcs of grace that point towards the primary game objective. In a typical game, quest markers and compass pointers are designed to funnel the player where they need to go next, in a purely mechanical sense. This is to prevent what designers presume to be the average player from getting frustrated and aimless. Such guidance is there in large part to try and maintain a consistent level of interest and engagement in the player. In Elden Ring, you are told almost immediately that the arcs of grace that spring from each site of grace are, basically, a sign of your (the Tarnished) own aspiration. You see the grace because you want to find power, glory, meaning, or enlightenment. The "compass pointer" represents aspiration - not just a literal map through the game. And appropriately enough for this kind of game, one's aspirations do not necessarily equal one's capability. Following the grace arc immediately from site to site will, in most cases, lead the player straight into death as they march forward into higher level zones and bosses without having spent time acquiring power and experience. In this one game, "the arrow telling you where to go" is intended to humble the player, not remove difficulty or frustration from their journey. But it is also meant to inspire. You see your goal - now you have to figure out what will make you ready to achieve it.

@@Wacharis lol that's fair. I actually like feeling like an ant to start, or at least like the whole world doesn't revolve around me, but also that I do become the main character of my own story as I progress

I’ve recently bought the game and have just played it for around 4 hours and I can agree that the actual first boss is rather difficult I got it down to a quarter of its health but only from the help of companions and summons then I died and went and explored which was fun. Edit: I have played all Dark Soul games and this is the first time I have been beaten to a pulp by a man using a glorified Pika Pika no mi

LMAO THE PIKA PIKA XDDD okay that made me giggle, but it took me 3 attempts to clown that boss and im not really a "souls player" so i dunno why people are having trouble with him.

I made the mistake of running to him without exploring and leveling that much. Finally beat him last night and celebrated. Will definitely explore and upgrade more from now on though, and take the experience more slowly.

For me, when I found that boss I took a 3 hour nap, and came back and eventually beat him. Mind you, I’m a first time player for this type of game EVER, and I was definitely feeling terrible playing for my first maybe 10 hours.

Ngl, i was the same. For the firdt 8 hours i think i wasnt very fond of the game but i was so wrong. I was afraid of the souls type game, now i one short margit and the thrill was unlike any other game. Games that ribal that feelihg was botw for me, but botw hooked me in from the very start. All in all i might be addicted to the game now

im like low level 50, and it took me multiple tries to actually beat Margit, throughout the attempts I was really starting to regret my build really bad, but the good thing about FromSoft is that they know how to make you feel good. After i beat him I explored for like 5 more hours doing absolutely NOTHING related to the main-line story. This game is a masterpiece.

Honestly I was just thinking that boss is great for new players and even better opening for past souls players but some people think it's bad game design to make a game that isn't instantly rewarding to players but souls wouldn't be the brand it is if it did that.

In Elden Ring the 1st main story boss is not the actual easy learning tutorial/beginner learning boss. It's the Cave in the 1st area with the Beastman of Ferrum Azzula. Your literally as a brand new player supposed to get the horse then explore & find some gear/dungeons to practice & learn fighting tactics. If your having difficulty in a dungeon take a break/area explore, practice against specific enemies more, & slowly gain runes People take the game too seriously or intentionally make it harder for themselves whether accidentally or intentionally/subconsciously. Just have fun, nobody is forcing you to do anything... who cares if you take months to beat the game. Its your story & adventure do it your way.
