Lol.....funny thing is, when our kids were still in school/marching band, I got roped into everything from building field props for competition season, driving the equipment hauler, emergency instrument repair on performance nights, chaperone (man, they REALLY missed the mark on that one!!) and everything in between.... After a few years, it all sorta started running together in a big blur😳

Been riding and wrenching for 59 years, started at 5 years old, repaired a honda 50 mini trail at that age, at 24 I was in Daytona for 800 hours of american V twin training, never ever had a shop work on any of my bikes, bottom end up, wheel to wheel, still hand change my own tires, watched a lot of youtube mechanics and gritted my teeth just watching, I wouldn't hesitate to let Joe wrench for me, he is a perfectionist, and a lot of fun to watch.

I am so glad you guys started doing these videos. As a self taught tinkerer these are worth gold my friends. TBH, I am largely "self taught" in most things in life.....some lessons came damned hard, but I LEARNED!! By some miracle, I haven't trashed a shirt yet!!!( I've worked with a few guys that could fall face first in a pile of chicken shit, and come up smelling like a rose while holding a chicken salad sandwich!!!!...... @@JoeTheMountainJedi LOL Thanks for the reply. During this Kawaski build you were syncing the carbs and had vacuum gauges? I have a 73 Honda CB450. Its all original and sat for the better part of 30yrs. I cleaned the carbs but I dont think they are synced properly. Will you be seperating the video on how that is done? Ive changed the coils, plugs, wires, brake lines and cables, I have it running and moving. The stopping isn't what I think it should be. Are there better calipers that can be used on this bike? Love what you guys are doing. be safe.

Pro tip: If you don't have an air compressor and you have a multi piston caliper what you can do is stick something into the caliper ( something that isn't too thin to make the piston come fully our ) and pump them out with the break pressure using the brake lever. Don't forget to take the calipers off the bike, but do not disconnect them. Usually only one will move, once that contacts whatever you've put inside the caliper, the other should follow and come out as well. Once they are both quite a well way out, you can just take them out by hand. If you don't know what thickness to stick a piece of wood or something start with a thicker piece and work your way to as thin as you can.

@@JoeTheMountainJedi All good, it's one of those smaller issues I think. A compressor does make the job a lot faster. Although I have had a case where only one of the pistons fired out, so I'm always sticking something in to make sure both are possible to get out. :D Actually, for the longest time I couldn't figure out why my brakes were dragging ( on a bunch of older bikes I had ), even after the rebuild. Until this video I never thought about the return pressure hole getting gunked up, especially for the older bikes that have sat for a while. These videos actually sum up really well what is the difference from knowing how it works and kind of knowing how it works. And I think the latter is how most dyi folk get around. So this is just kind of the missing piece that we need. :D

I use to do the edge grind thing on cars also...kept my customers coming back. Worked till I was 70 & sold everything, even my alignment machine. That big square O ring is what pulls the piston back 30 thousands of an inch when you let off the brake.

Excellent stuff! I once tried checking my brake fluid, but because of my stupid-ass buckhorn bars, the fluid started coming out the moment I took the lid off of the front master cylinder. This was with the bike leaned all the way over on the kickstand to try to keep things more level. Another reason I'm more inclined to go to my local indy shop for a job like this. Still great stuff to know about, even if it's beyond my toolkit and time.

Great Video, well done. There is something just so damned satisfying about taking the time to disassemble, clean / replace worn out and broken parts. Recently rebuilt a pair of early R1 calipers as an upgrade to my Yamaha Diversion. Took the opportunity to rebuild the master cylinder as well as renewing fork seals and fitting progressive springs and cartridge emulators. 5-600 bucks and the improvement is just great. Very happy with the results.

I'm a car mechanic and I love these videos I back bleed with a syringe on most clutch slave cylinders on cars collapse the slave with a pry bar then sent the fluid back upto the master cylinder have helped out alot of people with that trick.. also I was gonna say we need a ciggy counter on joe but this video he's been pretty smoke free compared to the last few🤣

The part of brakes that scares me is that the rake fluid is so dangerous with everything around it. Paint, metal and plastic will all be messed up if it spends much time on it. Last night I was bleeding the rear brake on my bike and the reservoir was in a difficult location and I did the best I could with towels. I think I kept everything clean, but it was extremely frustrating. I hope everything will be OK.

Dot3/4 fluid can cause damage to paint, and plastics of certain types, but it's not like it's alien blood!!... Keep a couple of towels handy, just in case of a oopsie (and a bottle of Windex, if you're really nervous about it).... Other than that, it's just like any other oil/fluid/liquid..... If you're in a tight spot, grab a pack of syringes like I showed in the vid, and designate one as a "clean tool".... Use that for filling the reservoir if it's in a area of limited access

great video. i like the way he bled the master cylinder ,but i usually do the reverse bleed by using a bigger syringe, and works great ,one of my bikes i replaced the bleeder screw with speed bleeders and it helped a lot, i also once had air in my brake system ,so i zip tied the brake lever overnight and left the cover open and all air was gone in the morning .

I buy spray brake cleaner by the case. I would completely submerge those calipers in it and let them soak. I had an '85 Goldwing LTD (yes, the one with computerized fuel injection) what a nightmare. It had a combined front/rear brake system that was impossible to bleed the normal way. I put SpeedBleeders on it. They have a ball check valve in them, so fluid can get out, but air can't get back in. They permanently replace the oem bleeder screws. The way I usually do it is just gravity bleed them. Remove the caliper, with the hose still attached, pull it away from the bike, put it in a small plastic bowl, set something under it to support it and keep it away from the bike, loosen the bleeder screw, and just keep pouring a little fluid into the master cylinder. Don't touch the brake lever. The fluid will slowly dribble down until all the air is gone. Tighten the bleeder screw, make sure the master cylinder is full, rinse off the caliper with brake cleaner, and put it back on the bike. I've beveled brake pads using a Dremel with a reinforced cutoff wheel. You actually made the master cylinders BETTER by getting rid of those windows. They really never needed to be there in the first place.

Some great tips. That cheap syringe seems easier than the brake blender tool I use. Joe makes me wanna start smoking again. I loved taking a break from working on my bike to have a ciggy. Joe smokes as he works, which I never really did, but I see the appeal. : ) I grabbed a cheap little 40 dollar air compressor from Harbor Freight a couple years ago. It does the job for stuff like popping out brake caliper pistons or needing air for a carb clean. I can't run power tools off it or paint with it, but it's nice to have. And didn't cost much.

Sometimes a bore snake can get "repurposed" after it gets to the point where you don't wanna be dragging it thru your barrel..... especially if it's on a precision rifle!!

Yeah, they're known for being "talkative".....it may help if you bevel some pads(preferably new ones that are HH rated, or at least semi-sintered, for better "bite") and also VERY LIGHTLY deglaze the rotor surface with some 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper....it'll help the pads bed in, and also help scrub out any old pad material that may have a layer "burnt in" on the face of the rotor.....do this VERY SLOWLY so you can keep them uniform when you do!!

Just a heads up they make oring picks now that are a flat thin blade to prevent damage to orings. They work great.
