I love the Halo soundtracks, particularly 1, 4, and 5. Your video did a fantastic job of putting into words as to why I believed each brought something to the table in their own specific way. I particularly enjoyed your "Original Trilogy = Cosmic Sound v. 4/5 = Character and Story driven sound" argument. It was an "aha moment" for me. I'm really looking forward to the new game. I'm hoping for a blend.

If this turns into a repetition of old themes, I'll blame you first. The last part of God of war didn't need to play old music to make it work. It was a different approach, different music was needed. So for Halo 4, they changed the approach to the universe and characters. It needed new music, and the 4th part gave it. The only thing that is bad here is that the series lost the composer of the 4th part, and kojima in the 5th game showed that he is not capable of much. In General, this is my main fear about the new game. I'm afraid that 343 will pass back, refuse to do the job, I'm afraid that the Chief will again become just a cool guy in armor, while Halo 4 showed how complex and interesting a character he is.

The music of halo reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from star wars "Long time I watched as he looked away to the future, to the horizon, never his mind on where he was hmm what he was doing" That was my main problem with the original soundtrack too much focus on looking outwards to the horizon never HERE See the need that's right in front of you

It wouldnt fit in CE, because its a different type of halo game. Its still halo, but your an isolated marine. Not a supersoldier who never was completely isolated. You always had someone with you as MC, being cortana, arby, blue team or marines. ODST is halo with a different atmosphere needed. The music creates that atmosphere and establishes ODST is its own story.

Watching this video just made me realize how much Kazuma's score isn't used to control pace. Using Halo 3's layers in that Halo 5 level really highlights how much subtle layers and build up add to the experience. I had more fun watching that level with H3's music than I did playing it. It's a shame because while Halo 4 missed an opportunity to transition from Marty's style into the new, 343 did use music to great effect in its levels; Requiem's reveal, the Composer being taken, 117 while in the Broadsword, etc.

What I find a little funny is that Halo 4 did Mass Effect music better than Mass Effect's sequels did. But something I think some people forget is that Halo CE had its fair share of 80's throwback synth tracks, like Covenant Dance, that didn't really make a reappearance in the trilogy. Though Halo Wars did a great job in blending the tech and orchestral sound that I thought Halo 4 needed and was trying to go for, especially since the environments were very reminiscent of Halo Wars.

Okay, I'm going to try and give a detailed and meaningful comment regarding that scene at 13:20 and you're editing at 14:40. First of all, your notes during that scene were very helpful pointing out what we were looking for. The awkward silence from the start to the overpowering male choir masking the dialogue. Then the music just ends from the Elites onward? That's the part that just shocked me because I couldn't believe that there were entire sections just void of BGM (Background Music) like they ran out of tape. It's a mistake and amateur would make, not an entire studio. Now for your editing at 14:40 I tried my best to listen to every detail. The female vocal and brass at the beginning that builds up to a more full choir. It adds more emotion and meaning to the dialogue and the environment. Then light piano notes add emphasis to that one spartan's comment "This place is incredible". Then the best part comes along when the bass starts playing during your first encounter with the covenant. Which then slowly starts building up to a familiar theme that I know and love. Almost like it's reintroducing you to an enemy you fought before. I can't quite tell if it's from Halo 2 or Halo 3, but I'm leaning more towards Halo 2 because that's the one I played the most and remember dearly. So, in conclusion, I'm shocked at the amateur mistakes made by 343. Having sections void of BGM without purpose is just unacceptable. Your edit, on the other hand, felt like that's what that scene should have sounded like. I felt more immersed in the surroundings and the dialogue seemed to have more meaning to their words. Then brought back a feeling of familiarity when the bass plays during your conflict with the covenant. I didn't even notice it was older music till that part played. I hope my comment was helpful and not all over the place. I really enjoy these types of community videos because it feels like our comments actually matter and will be taken into account. So please continue these.

The new soundtracks are too digital and sci fi oriented. They don't make use of as many traditional instruments like the classic halos used. All the originals needed where a violin, piano, drums, and choir and that was halos identity as a space opera. Now it's over saturated sci fi shite with too much going on and lacks the elegance of simplicity.

Halo 5 and 4 both have amazing soundtracks. It's good, closer to the the original halo's in many ways (more so than halo 4 in some respects) but it is still lacking what makes halo sound like halo, and that's simplicity. This isn't 343's fault, they proved with spartan assault, halo 2 anniversary, and halo wars 2(beta) that they can make amazing halo sounding music. They just don't implement it were it counts for some reason.
@zalrohglekgolo61498 жыл бұрын
HCE and H2 had more synthetic and digital instruments and sounds on it's soundtrack than your remembering. Marty worked mostly digital until Halo 3 when he decided everything needed to be 64 piece orchestra. there's a heavier presence to keyboard synths, electric drums, really synthy violins. I personally dont understand the "too digital an sci-fi oriented" remark considering it always sounded that way, with the exception of a few key songs that didn't from HCE, which were few and far between.
@carlosspicyweiner62938 жыл бұрын
The majority of the tracks on CE and H2 were less digital than halo 4 and 5. Halo 3 is the perfect blend, as is halo wars, halo wars 2, spartan assault. The ones which were primarily digital were still at least accompanied by heavy orchestral. Covenant dance for example has much of what defines halo in it, but it also has some digital in it. No where near as much as songs on halo 4 and 5s soundtrack.

I feel that the biggest difference between both versions of the halo series has to do with the marines. With bungie, the marines had courage. They wanted to fight! They're weren't scared of anything, like you could hear them shouting "YEA" from a distance after you heat shot a grunt. I feel like that's the huge change that's occurred. The marines were there to kick ass. Rather than being formal and being so worried. Idk that's just what I think.

Frank O'Connor Just needs to suck it up and higher Marty, yes, the other composers are good, but Marty needs a chance to bring something new. Star Wars 7 still used John Williams, and yet no one can say it isn't new. I think of all things at this point in the series the most important thing is gaining lost ground, they improved somethings and made some things part of it now that weren't before, but they lost so much ground changing everything, much of it because they could and no real reason. They threw away Halo 4, marginalized the first trilogy, and took steps back in many ways, all while adding things no one wanted and or halo doesn't need. In addition to a whole lot of changes game play and feature wise, and basically a story master piece to save the series from Halo 5, they need to revive Halo's spirit, which is it's music, and I don't think anyone can do that but Marty.

Yeah, it's quite weird. In the Halo 1-3 days, the Elites would wear a sort of form-fitting jumpsuit under their armour, which would be a dark grey colour not too different in colour from their skin, but different enough to be recogniseable as fabric. 343's elites still wear these jumpsuits, but go sleeveless, and the jumpsuit itself has way too much texture going on, so it looks too.... organic, like it is their skin/scales. It doesn''t help that the art team seems conflicted about this, as one of the Halo: Escalation comic covers depicts the Elite character Ayit 'Sevi (A merc who works for ONI under the table) in the Halo 4/5 era "Storm" armour, but without the bodysuit textured properly, so he actually DOES look naked for no discernable reason!

The biggest problem with the Halo sounding tracks is that they don't fit very well with the gameplay that plays more like a run of the mill shooter. The blueteam music you played sounds good, but it's quiet and is enveloped by the loud and out of place sound effects for the weapons, and spartan abilities, and just about everything really.

That edit you made to Reunion is perfect! It made the level feel that much better. If only we had that plus stronger dialogue ( *Locke, Osiris, and Blue Team especially* ), a better presentation of Rampant Cortana, and slightly better visuals.. maybe the campaign would have been somewhat ok. Except for the death of Jul' Mdama and similar events because those were just UNACCEPTABLE

I hated how Halo Reach's soundtrack was organized. The songs were grouped by level like the "suite" tracks from previous games, so they were all like 10 minutes long. I wish they were split up a bit to make them an easier listen.
@117Tempest8 жыл бұрын
TylerPierson That was my biggest (and only) issue with Reach's OST tbh. The music itself was great IMO, but the organization of the soundtrack makes it harder to tie a specific piece of music to a moment in the game. At least there were a few bonus tracks like Ghosts and Glass that weren't grouped together by mission.
@highviewarts8 жыл бұрын
TylerPierson YES. There some great sections of songs composed, but then they got grouped together with totally different songs that were generic and brought the other song down, and often the only thing linking the two was a fade transition. So poorly constructed imo.
@JustAndre928 жыл бұрын
Eh, _Reach_'s soundtrack was where _Halo_ music started to lose its memorable quality anyway, so really outside of a handful of tracks it's not that big a loss. Mind you, it's hard to blame Marty too much; working on the same series for a decade has gotta leave you burnt out by the end.
@117Tempest8 жыл бұрын
GzG92 I like Reach's soundtrack a lot tbh. It's different, but It fits the setting and tone of the game well. Songs like Winter Contigency, New Alexandria, and Ghosts and Glass are easily some of the most memorable tracks in Halo IMO. I don't think it's BETTER than some of Marty's other work, but it's still very good and memorable in its own way.

Back when Halo 4 had just come out, I got it the Christmas of that year. I loaded it up on my Xbox 360, and let it do it’s loady-thingy. When I got to the menu, I thought I had gone into the wrong game. The music wasn’t Halo. Not the Halo I remember. Change is okay, but not always good. Reach’s Soundtrack still retained Halo vibes. Even ODST did. Just this new trilogy really messed with a lot of how Halo sounds. The gameplay, music, and campaign design are like other titles (namely Titanfall, CoD, etc.). Edit: I would like to state, that in spite of my general dislike for the music as it relates to Halo, it IS good music, just not befitting of Halo.

The idea is pretty cool about making the menu music change after you've completed the campaign. I really liked the way you chose to show this, with the color shift and the blend to the different music. Also, personally, it would be a sort of tragic bittersweet-ness to realize, after the fact, that I can't ever hear the "pre-campaign" menu music again. And If you were to do a stellar job with the story/character development, mixing that bittersweet-ness (just over the permanent music change) and I feel like a truly deep connection would be made/reinforced with Chief/Cortana/etc.Cool video

343 needs to bring Marty O'Donnell back in immediately! His music defines Halo. The Sountrack of Halo 2 was so good that I actually bought the sountrack to a video game. The atmosphere is set by Marty's music. In my opinion, audio is even more important than graphics. The best looking game can be near unplayable with bad audio. And vice versa. Audio, music, gun sounds, explosions etc, make the game. They create a much deeper level of immersion and create emotional attachments. Gun sounds > gun graphics. Period.

Your videos about how to blend the 343 and bungie styles is what makes me have fun doing that for my Halo L4D2 mods
@jouebien8 жыл бұрын
I find that a lot of 343 music is empty. It just doesn't have the body and omph that the Bungies had. When you listen to a lot of Bungies music their is a lot of Jass or Blues style randomness going on which adds to the body of the music. 343 music also has a lot of repeated sections where as Bungies music was always either building up or deflating. Halo 5 main theme is lafable its like the halo 3 theme had a baby with Pirates of the Caribbean and the composer decided to use the copy paste tool 15 times. A lot of 343i music also lacks polish - it's like they skipped part of the mastering process. A lot of the 343 stuff you could through a compressor on and drop the dynamic range and its starts to flow a lot nicer. Their also isn't a lot of music from 343 music that is memorable as everything just blends together.

Halo boomers, that's a new one for me ha ha. And no kid, I don't want to insult you or anything but if only you were there back on the early 2000s you'll understand why halo was the biggest thing ever back then. Halo 4 also has a place in my heart, it gave depth to the Master Chief's journey and also expanded the lore. However, if you established a core art style and soundtrack style you can't abruptly change it without facing discomfort from the old fans. That's my opinion on the matter, I hope you understand why people get defensive with these changes.

"New age of Halo" Again, why does Halo need to change as much as 343i are making it? I keep bringing this up but Halo's 1, 2, 3, ODST, and Reach changed/added to Halo while making it feel like Halo (Reach got a bit crazy in a few places). I get 343i are a new Dev team and all, but they haven't even once made a Halo game that didn't have a bunch of weird and most of the time not really need changes. Is it really to much to ask to get a Halo game that plays like the older Halos but still being a new Halo? I don't want H1A, H2A, or H3A, I want a new Halo game that is similar to the older ones. 343i have changed the lore, gameplay, art style, sound, and the music. The reason they give is, "well Halo has to change". I don't know I've been playing Halo for a long time started with Halo 1 when I was 8 all the way up to 5, I never thought that Halo wasn't changing before. I've seen 343i's take on Halo and to be honest, I find it forgettable. Just because you put a lot of heart into something thing doesn't mean it's good or even passable. Like I said though, I started playing Halo when I was 8 and Halo 1 is what got me into FPS games. I'm going to be 24 in just a bit and I find the more 343i changes things the more I care less about Halo. It really sucks that a game I grew up with has been changed in such a way that I no longer care about it. You people may like 343i's take on Halo and that is fine, but if they are just going to keep changing things then I'm out. I'm not going to play a game that makes mad sad. :\

Honestly, Halo 4 is my favorite halo soundtrack. It feels very different and sadder, but it suits the more serious and human story. That being said, the halo 5 soundtrack doesn’t really suit it. Halo 4 is also missing an awesome hard hitting song such as the original Halo Theme or the halo 3 scorpion run.

I really appreciate how you brought attention to how faithful Tom Salta’s soundtrack is to the halo sound. I never played Spartan Ops, but I listen to Halo OSTs pretty frequently. The first time I heard his music I was surprised at how he was able to make new music that sounded so familiar...I’d be really disappointed if he isn’t involved in the Infinite soundtrack.

What do you think of the Halo title screens and which one is your favorite? How important are title screens to games like Halo? I also noticed that the perspective moves in all of the Bungie title screens, while the 343 screens are motionless. I enjoyed the movement because it allowed the screen to focus on different things, and set the feels of the upcoming game by defining the situation you are about to be in. That said, Halo 4 does a great job of giving a sense of isolation, something I don't feel watching the other title screens. One more thing is that all of the title screens, except Halo 5, show places relevant to the story of the game. If this gets into the next Q&A that would be great, if not I'll repost it on the next video. Thanks.

@Cody Hemming Halo 4's title screen is very poignant, very somber, very peaceful and dark. I remember being in awe when I heard the woman vocalizing while watching Requiem float in the background with all the wreckage of Forward Unto Dawn floating aruund as well. It was so perfect and beautiful. Also, if you stock around and listen to the main menu theme, you can hear the soundtrack play a very recognizable part that also played in Halo 3 after Chief rescued Cortana in High Charity. I think of Cortana everytime i hear that theme. As much as Halo 5 dissapointed me, I will never hate on the iconic classic theme. It's always perfect...but Halo 4's just sounded so...beautiful.

Sorry but I am not personally a fan of a lot of Halo 4's music. I absolutely hate having to use the word "generic" but that's all that really comes to me that I feel from it. Nothing in it sounds memorable. I disagree that it is 'objectively good' on the basis that just because it might match with the moods onscreen makes it good or in the moment. To me, music has to be not only memorable, but a tune I can/want to hum in my own free time when I go back to think about something. When I have memories of playing (video game name here) I want to recall certain tunes alongside the visuals of those memories...and when it comes down to it I rarely remember anything from Halo 4. A lot of the melodies were WAY too simplified (I don't know how else to describe, but a lot of those piano-led pieces sound incredibly) and I just wasn't a fan of the kaleidoscope of emotions that every single Bungie-directed Halo game gave us. I'm supposed to be playing a series that emits the "bigger than life" sensation within every pixel, and Halo 4's music didn't give me much of that...and it was hampered more by the 'ok but not great' gameplay.
@JustAndre928 жыл бұрын
To be fair, I think avoiding the larger-than-life feel you're referring to was a conscious choice on 343's part given the more scaled-back, intimate scope of _Halo 4_'s story, but at the end of the day, you're right: Truly great music has to be not only evocative, but intensely memorable, and most of 343's _Halo_ music simply isn't.
