why people hate George Russell

George Russell is one of the most hated men in F1, but is this warranted? People have said that he should defer to Lewis Hamilton be less bossy with Mercedes over the team radio? But all Mercedes driver George Russell has ever wanted to be is an F1 Driver. Isn't he just being an F1 Driver and trying to win a race, himself, every race weekend? Is George Russell not just an F1 Driver, F1 Driving? We look at Saudi Arabian GP team orders, Brazilian GP strategy, George Russell interviews and analsyse them to seewhether George Russell is a saint or an F1 sinner? Is the criticism of George Russell valid? Or are we expecting something from George Russell that he doesn't owe to anyone? Is he the competitive team mate Lewis Hamilton needs or could his relentless drive to win, be the cause of instability in the Mercedes AMG Petronas driver pairing?

I can't remember bottas being a mascot at any point in 2021. He had a chance to win races where Lewis was out of the mix and couldn't do it. Sir George would have those same chances. I wonder how many times you've said this about Checo.

Having a "champion mentality" doesn't automatically make you a champion or a good teammate. How does working against your teammate actually help the team especially in races where you know you're not going to win? Every driver on the grid wants to be a champion but I think you can do that and still be a good teammate. Sir George hasn't shown himself to be either yet.

The team game for most Lewis fans means: do whatever benefits *Lewis*. That's all it boils down to for them. Their expectations for George are clear, do everything and anything that benefits Lewis, even if he screws himself over. Zandvoort was a great example of this. Lewis was overtaken immediately on the old mediums, yet people believe George would have held Verstappen up to help Lewis win... How does that work?!... He made the only right call in that moment, and helped the team to score P2 and P4 instead of P3 and P4. It was the team's mistake that they didn't pit both of them. George has not only the speed, but the intellect of a champion (to me he's better than the likes of Leclerc or Norris). But the fact that he is competitive and ruthless like many of the greats, does not diminish the "right" things he says in the media. The two can co-exist. He's never badmouthed the team or Lewis. He can praise Lewis, and at the same time be competitive. He's always been clear that he wants to beat his teammate (which for many clueless f1 "fans" is enough to brand him a snake....), and he should not be expected to roll over and give up for no particular reason. A lot of the protection doesn't reflect well on Lewis either. He is one of the greats for a reason. Let him compete and fight. Let him earn those positions. He is much stronger than some people pretend.

Especially when earlier in the race Max breezed past George. What did they expect would happen a couple laps later? Max was a faster car on fresher tires. Without George pitting they are finishing P3-P4. He should give up his race/podium for a completely hopeless gamble for a win? Why wouldn't George want to be a part of that, I have no idea... :) And Merc had tire warm up issues all year too. it was a fumble by the strat team unfortunately..

I’ve absolutely loved watching George race through the junior ranks and even loved his determination at Williams. In 2022 he was liked by almost everyone for being consistent. Great video as always Cameron! I’ve got absolutely no issue with George using everything at his disposal to make things work in his favour. It’s an F1 drivers job at the most fundamental level to win and George is doing his best to do just that. The car isn’t allowing him to show his best but he’s doing all he can to maximise the results within his reach and good for him. And is it all that different to the attitude a fresh face Lewis displayed in 07 when he stepped into that second McLaren seat against a reigning world champion in Alonso? Although the conduct you point out in the video likely is an illustration of the ruthlessness and singular focus and will to win of Kings Lynns finest I think it could also be a testament to the challenge he feels he’s facing. GR is fighting for his life in that number 63 car against his hero! Of course he feels as though he needs to “stack the deck” as much as he can, he’s desperately trying to keep his head above water against a tidal wave that eats F1 drivers for breakfast in Sir Lewis Hamilton! George desperately wants to be like a Button or a Rosberg and not (with the greatest respect) a Kovalainen. As a Lewis fan, part of me would love for him to have a subservient teammate, to make his ride as smooth as possible but really that’s a cheap way to do it. If you’re the greatest of all time (as, in my opinion, Sir Lewis is) then you don’t need or want that. If he can’t beat a charging George Russel then he can’t hope to win races or championships. “We chose to do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard” to paraphrase the famous JFK speech.

Im personally tired of all the accolades thrown at drivers that have the best car and dont have a team mate who can, or is allowed to consistently challenge them. Its great to see Georges talent and Lewis has to earn his position over his team mate. Hes unlikely to win another title now. For me stats are less important than team mate domination. Give most of the F1 drivers today the best car over a decade and they will be multiple champs.

George doesn't need to play second fiddle to Lewis, but it is important that both drivers play the team game in a year like 2023 where there is a lot at stake in the constructors championship. George will overtake Lewis sooner or later, but Singapore and Japan are two examples where George's eagerness to beat Lewis yesterday, trying to be the hero with desperate overtaking or weird strategies, is really hurting Merc's fight against Ferrari. I actually think George would perform better and score more points if he focused on his performance within the context of the team and the standings, instead of Lewis' ankles. Get closer to Lewis by not focusing on fighting him.

I've got nothing against George, the dude is a straight up killer of a driver and his time will come when he gets a proper car. Whenever Lewis lays down his lid for good, I can rest easy as a Merc fan that they will have a ruthless driver that has shown he's scarily consistent and almost always maximizes the race day. It's easy for me to get behind George after seeing that picture of him as a kid, idolizes Lewis. All valid points. Are George's actions any different to other drivers in other teams e.g. Carlos Sainz. Bottas to Lewis was a relationship we saw many times with Fernando and his team mates. They got on great because (realistically) they were never a threat.. other than Lewis. It's nature of the beast with a young hungry driver and whilst they're not fighting for a title it makes no difference to Merc who finishes first on track, their two drivers pushing each other secures a stronger result.

I think in all honesty the only metric that matters is speed if your fast enough on pure performance you will never be a number two. Remember Charles Leclerc was signed as a number two to Vettel but he was so fast it was impossible for Ferrari to properly impose that status on him. With Hamilton i just feel he was so much better than Bottas that even when he wasn't at his best he could easily beat him, but with George any mistakes any Bad qualifying's any sub strategy calls or car setup issues then he will probably get beat so that means Lewis has to be on it 100% all the time. In my opinion Lewis has lost a tenth or so in raw pace and that wont effect him against 99% of the grid but against the top 1% ie, Max, Leclerc, Russell, Lando on a even playing field it will shows up a little more. We have to be honest about Bottas's level aswell look at him now struggle's to beat Zhou and lets be real that is the only reason that Hamilton and his fans liked Bottas because he was easy to beat real competition creates animosity and this is the 1st time in Lewis's career where he is the old guy with the young hungry teammate Hamilton coming down from his peak and Russell is climbing to his peak it is natural evolution with age and father time. People think that Alonso is driving at his best but i disagree for me his best was in 2012 when he was out driving everybody with the 3rd best car on the grid i don't believe he could do the same now just like i don't believe if Lewis had a car 2 or 3 tenths off Red Bull i don't think he would beat max but a few years ago i believe he would still challenge.

Lewis should be thankful he has George as team mate at the moment and this late on his career, maybe George will take some wins away from him but but we all know he probably can have thew upper hand on George... The NERVE of this kid! I understand racing is his life and being Formula 1 champion is his dream, I get that he has worked EXTREMELY hard ALL HIS LIFE since he was a child to be where he is right now and when he finally got there he had to spend 3 years in a backmarker car and then when he finally moved up to Mercedes it wasn't performing as he would have hoped, but seriously.. HOW DARE HE perform to the best of his abilities? I just can't process the fact that he wants to do everything in his power to achieve his childhood dream. George is not the ultimate team player...He does not obey team orders during racing and bucks the system at his whim without repercussions...Lewis tends to color within the lines and tries to work with the system and seems to be rebuked when he rails against the system during racing...Look how long it took Merc to finally listen to him about the car's design...George goes against the team orders and gets his cry baby whims met like Crashstappen, e.g., he doesn't pit when they tell him to, he argues with the team tire recommendations during racing, he demands track position when he's in a pickle, etc. So, no I don't like his prima donna attitude because it is only self serving...He still has a lot to learn and that attitude will cause him a great fall before he builds up again...If it's going to be George's way, then hell let's have a free for all...I'll bet Lewis will make better calls...

George Russell has demonstrated a total lack of respect for a 7 time WDC, a man that is Knight of the Realm and one of, if not the, greatest of all time. I know he wants to win, his whole point in life is to just beat Lewis, and he will never, ever be a team player. I don’t think people like him because of just how obnoxious he is. Like you said, he should just be open about his villainy, not hide behind the bullcrap good guy team player facade. It’s fine he wants to beat Lewis, but the lack of respect is something that makes most of us dislike him. He speaks to his pit wall like crap, and it’s not difficult to imagine that is how he treats service workers that have the misfortune to wait his table, etc. Lewis is actually about to stop being the nice guy and I’m all for it. George cost him a possible race win in Singapore, he raced in Japan when unexpected, mugging Lewis when he wasn’t even thinking George would do it, but as soon as Lewis took the position back, firmly, George is on the radio asking “are we racing each other or the other teams?” - what a pathetic message from him. I have to admit, I loved when GR binned it in Singapore while attempting to prove he was faster than Lewis, loved it. I loved it when Lewis slapped him off while defending his position, and I just want the old Lewis to return and show this arsehole who is the boss - because GR has lost any respect he may have had. Ohh, and never has GR been anything close to the best of the best in F1. Lewis, Max, Fernando, GR isn’t on that level. Sad because I’m a Brit and I followed GR since his Ginetta JR days.

I love George, finally a racing driver that takes on Lewis and proves how weak he really is. Lewis lost to three of his four last teammates on points. Nobody would be forgiven this, all drivers around would be considered “weak” with those stats. But Lewis has many prices. So that’s a question there, no conclusion. Now look at Rosberg retiring and Mercedes consciously picking a driver that isn’t a threat to Lewis. That’s extraordinary, never happens in top teams. Combine that with the strong cars Mercedes build and the prices are explained. We can currently see the strength of Bottas and the question on what the potential of the Mercedes truly was suddenly becomes very relevant. George once stepped in and should have won without practice or careful setup. That’s important info, it provides context. Anyone could have won, Lewis winning doesn’t say a lot about his skills. Lewis was good back in the days but now drivers like Russell match his speed without too much effort. Russell is being respectful and nice to Lewis because of his status and future ambition within Mercedes. And Lewis should be thankful for that because otherwise his seat would be at threat. Drivers like Norris would most likely outdrive both Russell and Lewis. I know many people here will rage by that logical conclusion but they are still in denial about last year where Russell outperformed Lewis. Just like Rosberg did, just like Button did. If Lewis gets a new teammate there’s a 75% chance of him losing on points during a season or overall. That’s mad. Don’t go in denial, those are the hard facts and should be a part of any serious analysis. George not playing the teamgame is only a problem because then Lewis has no place to hide anymore. And that clearly shows. In one or two seasons it will be undeniable and Lewis fans will collectively argue that “he became old”, the only argument that will be left by then.

This video aged liked milk. GR63 is no WDC. He hasn’t gotten the nerve for it. Too aggressive too late into his career. The number of crashes he has had in the only three seasons at Mercedes is abysmal. Yet he whines about it. At least Verstappen was aggressive and good. By no means a LH fan. He is also whiny but at least LH performs clinically and consistently well on track. (Or at least he did until the regulation change)
