Right on the button. My buddies brother called me a while back and asked for advice on a new car. His guns were set on a rotary with 150000 km and no rebuild. Car was 5 grand. I told him over the phone I would bet any money the engine has lost compression. Anyhow he clearly listened to me because he bought it (sarcasm). Then calls me about a check engine light 3 days later. I took it out for a drive and it was a total dog, misfiring at idle etc. lmao, I didn't even know what to say. He ended up paying mazda 3 grand for a new engine. Just stupid honestly.

Porsche's lines are easy to remember and their history are full of great recipes. 1948 - Porsche 356. 1st shape that would become the 911 later on 1964 - Porsche 901. The prototype of the upcoming 911 1964 - Porsche 911. The spawn of all modern 911 1973 - Porsche 911 Carrera RS. Peak of the 911 craze and one of the best air cooled N/A collectible. 1974 - Porsche 930. The spawn of the Porsche Turbo. Aka the "Widowmaker" due to the pendullum effect. 1989 - Facelifted version of the 930. Nothing much has changed. 1994 - Porsche 993. Last air-cooled 911. Spawned the infamous GT2. 1997 - Porsche 996. 1st water-cooled Porsche. Spawned the now famous GT3. Aka "Egg-eyes" due to the headlight looking like an sunny side-up egg. Introduces PDK and CCB. 2005 - Porsche 997. Updated version of the 996. Gone with the egg shape headlights and back to round. Saw the birth of the GT3 and 2 RS and the new 4.0L flat-6 engine. 2012 - Porsche 991. New 911 that uses electronic assisted steering booster. Saw the birth of the legendary 911R 2015 - Porsche 911.2. An updated of the 991 line where turbos will be added to the base Carrera. Different from normal Turbo variant which are 4L, 991.2 Carrera will be 3L and GT3 & 3RS are all still 4L N/A flat-6. That's the most condensed history for all different generations of 911 I can give. I did miss out some important ones like the Targa and such but that would be massively complicated to add in so as much as I can condense into an "Porsche 911 For Dummies" guide, this will be it.

Somebody has to say something: for whom are rear engine cars "wrong"? It is a stupid thing, what Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear (before) popularized. The rear engine layout is not wrong! The thing is, it makes the car only "edgier"! There are advantages to other cars, which let Porsche win a lot of races: the weight is all over the rear-axle. That means, there is mostly enough grip to accelerate! The disadvantage is, that it is not as easy predictable to drive (especially earlier models) as your front engine car. However to say, that a rear-engine car is "wrong" would be the same as saying, that a rear-wheel car is wrong (because mostly a front-wheel car is far saver for most people to drive in most situation).

Putting a heap of money into a car you love to keep it running is never a lost cause as long as it's not a frequently repeated repair. If you're putting a new trans in the thing every 30k miles then maybe you should consider driving something else. Save up and go for an 80s sc, you can find them in and around 30-50k and with, granted, alot of work, they will last forever (that work is a problem with the engine that of which I cannot remember the exact name of however I know that it can cause your engine to need a complete tear down Fitment Industries did a video on aircooled 911s and they mentioned it there), that said, if you want the truest 911 experience possible that won't kill your wallet so long as you do preventative maintenance and buy one with a good service history there probably nothing better than the 80s sc.

Their racing heritage, the constant onslaught rivalry they've had with McLaren, Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, and so forth is nothing short of legendary. The driving oriented cars they've released with their GT-2 and GT-3 cars is nothing short of spectacular. Ferrari and Lamborghinis are the cars you like for their looks. Porsche to me is a marque that once you get bitten you really fall in love with their cars, until that happens you might not "get" what is so special. They have such a rich history and also prove their worth on the race track, its a rare combination. While they branched out to other vehicle concepts to stay economically viable they are always about their sports cars/racing in the end.

There is no particular virtue in an air-cooled engine. What is being sold here is romance, which is perfectly fine if you're buying. "Enthusiasts" arbitrarily select the parts of automotive technological advancement they wish to subscribe to, then invent stories to rationalize their preferences. I've never seen a comment on KZbin or car site forums/comments calling for bringing back the manual starter crank because it's a "more authentic motoring experience." LOL. Fuel injection is 100,000% better than a carburetor. If I buy an older car, I'll mostly embrace the technology it was fitted with at the time of its manufacture. If I'm buying a new car, i want it water-cooled, hermetically sealed, automatic transmission, power-everything. I love cars, and I can appreciate every point in the range. Enjoy what you drive-drive what you enjoy-and don't let anyone make you feel "unwashed" because you don't venerate the same things.

My father had several Porsches when I was growing up.....a 911, a 912, a Targa. Absolutely loved those cars. What I loved the most about them was the chrome trim, just added that extra little touch of class to that wonderfully understated classic body. Sounded like VW's for obvious reasons, always loved the feeling of solid traction in the rear....but then that edge of flying off dangerously into space in a tight turn. If I was into acquiring classic cars, I'd definitely start with a 70's 911 Targa.

Jeff Lio That's one way to look at it. But if you have a real passion for something it just hurts to see someone buy one of those without even knowing what it is, let alone appreciating it. It's just another car to them, and they only buy it because other people find it cool. It will either get wrecked, because they don't care about it, or locked away and not be driven at all to increase value, because they don't care about it.

Bit late to the video but honestly Porsche’s just hold a special place in Lotta people’s hearts. For me it was the first nice sports car my father ever brought home, I remember him letting me take out my girlfriend in the car and everywhere we go “I love the car, nice ride” ect. It’s elegant, sleek, fast, but it’s not a huge attention grabber. It’s that quite kid in the room who you don’t know is secretly the #1 boxing champ in state. Prior to driving a Porsche I never found the appeal to them, but after experiencing everything these cars stand for, I’m obsessed. And can’t see myself owning any other sport cars as long as I’d gladly own a 911.

You can get it the other way around. The 912 had literally everything except motor and transmission from a 911. So to make a budget 911 to gain interest in the US, seen as the 911 was there only car and expensive, they released the 912. It was the same body, suspension, interior, etc. but the cut costs, slapped in a 1.6l air cooled flat 4 out of a VW and early Porsche 356 with transmission and slashed the cost. It made only 102 horsepower. It outsold the 911 by nearly 100%. It was discontinued after the 911 took off. The 911 remained their only car for a few years until the 914. When they killed the 914, they brought back the 912 for 1976 with a 2.0l air cooled flat 4 out of a VW making a gigantic 88 horsepower. I’m not joking. 88 horses. It was then discontinued for 1977 and replaced with the war crime of a car the 924. Eventually it returned again as the Cayman 718, which was introduced in 2005. Despite not being rear engines like the 912 and 911, it was still heavily inspired by the 912, being a 911 Jr. Interestingly the 718 was a rear engined race car from the 50’s that had been retired for about 45 years when it returned.

I love Porsche. I always had Mercedes when growing up, but always wanted a Porsche. The cars have something special to them...So much character, and so great to drive. I would never take anything else.
@ZDY666666 жыл бұрын
We love it for the sound, playful rear end, the rawness of a car designed in older pure car design philosophies, such as very connected steering feel, playful chassis, oil smells, hearing every mechanical part, feeling one with the car and being connected with it. We love the charisma of the car, the fashionable looks, also the nostalgia. The older air cooled cars also reminds us of how car design philosophies and laws / norms have changed (to me for the worse, and I'd imagine for many driving enthusiasts as well). Cars are soft, big, easy, heavy, and becoming less and less playful. The air-cooled 911s screams an era of the past and defies all such boring philosophies and reminds us what driving should be all about. PS It is NOT for picking up chicks. As matter of fact, the interior carpets smell like shit and reminds you of your old grandma's piss bucket crib with big old red carpet smells (oh...Just my grandma?)

Why we love them cuz they are easy to drive , race , maintain , sell and most of all , collect :)
@TheWolvesCurse6 жыл бұрын
Charlotte Dunois easy to drive? i think you have a misconceptiin here. sure at cruisingspeeds and in town they're easy, but man can they become a bitch when you take them to the twisties and push em to the limit. even the best driver in the world and most iconic porsche "mascot" Walter Röhrl says that. he likes porsches because of the challenge they offer when driving.
@ZDY666666 жыл бұрын
What the fuck? Have you even driven one? 😂😂 True to various degree but it's coming from a wrong perspective (can tell just by the adjectives you used) They definite are not easy to drive, which is why ppl make jokes about "how not to hit a tree, a 911 hand book". Few nowadays are raced. Collect is true. Maintain...They are reliable but is wouldn't say we LOVE to maintain then necessarily. They are unique mechanical pieces.

When I was a kid, Porsche was already a very distinct type of car for me. I could confuse other sports cars, but not Porsche. But they became my favorite sports cars after Need for Speed Porsche was released. Still one of the best games I ever played, and it contributed a lot for my knowledge of the cars and really consolidate my taste. When I got the chance to drive a sports car in that Exotic Driving Experience in US, I immediately chose the Porsche 911 among all other cars (Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and the GTR). One of the best days ever in my life. If I ever can afford such type of car, I will certainly buy some Porsche.

I view the Porsche community with admiration and a little bit of envy. The thought of refitting and/or restoring old Porsche cars is noble. I'm afraid though that the prices are becoming ginormous. Soon, mere enthusiasts will be forced out of the Porsche ownership market. I work and live on the road so I make do with BMW M2. It's the closest thing I suppose to the ethos.

I personally am not a Porsche fan but I love love the shape of the old 911s. The blackbird from wangan midnight. The RUFs. They are amazing looking, absolutely beautiful designs. Very effective performance vehicles. I can't bring myself to buy, pay for or afford any Porsche but if I could I would enjoy an old Porsche. This is primarily one of the key reasons as to why I like Honda's. I can afford Honda's, no matter how wonderful Porsche is it's often out of the price range for young men.

I think the reference to younger drivers and their experiences with cars like the Prius was apt. That is an older car, a 911 in this case is so "analog", basic, and honestly, way more engaging. It is this engagement with the 911 and other interesting vintage machinery that is so satisfying.
