100% agreed. The ppl who say they don't have time typically have time to party on weekends or watch some lame TV show every week. Seriously if you can't do 2-3 hours a week something is wrong with your priorities. There is also this really cool thing called private lessons. I remember back around 2005 when I was working full time, 14 hours of classes in college, 3 small kids to take care of and the wife and I shared one car. I still managed to train 2-3 days per week. While still working out at the gym 3-4 times per week. Before that I worked construction 12 hours per day and still trained. You either want it or you don't

I have a demanding job (own my company, very busy schedule) unfortunately, I sometimes don't have the time for 3, 4 rolling rounds after class. Where I train, this is really frowned on. It's like you're insulting the instructor by leaving before everyone else. Hate this. Notice the others that train there and train 4-5 days a week are usually younger guys, or guys with less demanding jobs. Anyway, it's off putting.

Perhaps find a school with more members that are professional-types. Every instructor tends to attract a particular demographic for the bulk their students.

I don't think it's "insulting" as much as it's annoying to other BJJ players because they see you skipping out before you get tired. Many people roll and then don't stay when they are tired and it gives some people (like me) a bad taste.

Focus on your own jujitsu and don't be too concerned about other people's expectations. You might have to make sure your clients and employees are always happy in your company,but even there you would still find unsatisfied people. As long as you do your best and explain what your condition is, it should be more than good enough regardless of the feedbacks...

Doesn’t matter the excuse. Bottom line is they are quitting because usually they just aren’t into it. I have trained off and in for 10+ years stand up and ground. Mainly stand up. Drop out rates have been equal in my experience. It’s hard and you get beat up. Training for most people is generally uncomfortable. It’s either your thing or it’s not. Not much in between. It’s not like going o the gym and sitting on some machines and going your own pace. You usually have to keep up and suffer a bit every class.

Or the gym just isn't offering classes when they have free time or off days...

I needed this! I just started a new business and I have to take time management more seriously. I train once a week now and thought about stopping until my business was more self-sufficient. Bt I know that if I utilize my time better, I can add at least one more day of training! Thank you once again for your encouragement!

It seems like an excuse to some, but I was training in BJJ that was fairly far----far enough that I was wondering the work I was doing on my older van was starting to pile up in cash. I was driving more than I was training, and my work schedule was on the third shift. Once I found a place a forth of the way closer and I was getting more sleep, even if I was training twice a week, I was getting more skilled and confidence in my ability over time. While I'm doing boxing (at this time) I'm still grappling there and here, and will find a class that's more BJJ/Judo at a place on top of it as well. I stopped going to the bar almost completely (not that I'm much of a drinker at this point) have managed to fit things even if I'm training in striking/rolling 2x-3x max a week.

I remember in 2019 not sticking with a jui jitsu because I would only be able to train 2 times per week. Then covid hit and I started again in 2021 but now have more time and do 5 times per week

I train and work 6 12 hour shifts a week. O.k., I am single but if you have a family and want to be with them later in life you need exercise so make time.

Some people don’t have time and opportunity. I asked another mother waiting during the kids class if she wanted to try BJJ. She said yes, but that she is alone with three children, has a full time job and lives on the other side of the city. So, making time for BJJ would probably be on the expence of her kids and that would be bad. I think there is a slight difference here beetween men and women with children/family regarding making time for e.g BJJ. Family culture and patterns, social expectations etc.

I was thinking of taking up boxing, weight-lifting and cardio in order to lose weight before taking up BJJ (so, I won't pass out and be embarrassed). Should I? Or should I work with the BJJ instructor in order to ease into the course? I will be signing up at a local athletic club in two weeks (mainly to have both the first month's fee AND the initiation fee ready, which is why I haven't signed up for a membership as of now).

DSWynne he discussed this before,really the only way to get in shape for jiu jitsu is is by doing jiu jitsu itself. Obviously you'll build your tolerance and can have more output down the road but just get in there and do it.

I understand but I don't want to be one of those guys where a) I am too tired to even train, or, b) get the look of pity from fellow classmates. Don't get me wrong; I WILL be taking up BJJ this year, but my concern is whether I take up the art this month or in three months. But, we'll see what happens, when I visit the club in a week...

DSWynne you have guys that come in and are marathon runners and they gas out after rolling for 15 minutes. It is a TOTALLY different type of workout. JUST GO, you will naturally get into shape. If you don't go earlier you will kick yourself in the butt for waiting.
@oscardelgado4130

DSWynne and one thing to add everyone is afraid of being judged but everyone at one point in jiu jitsu started out clunky or not making the movements correctly. Nobody should give you a ''pity look'' unless they are a jerk who doesn't stop to think they were there at one point in time.

What Oscar and Tyler both so eloquently stated. The truth to me, is that no one can truly “prepare” to come to JiuJitsu. The most athletic person is just as unfamiliar and “out of shape” in their first month as the regular person who is not an athlete.
