NBA players keep disrespecting Stephen Curry, but why?
‪@MJPLAYSALLDAY‬ STREAMING RN, making Steph Curry in NBA 2K23
TikTok- / mj_allday

Steph Curry is not dominant…not in the traditional sense and for some reason, NBA players haven’t caught on.
Curry is just catching strays. People are stunned to even put Curry in the conversation as the best player in the NBA right now. He’s getting disrespected by peers and NBA legends and it’s because he’s not 6’ 6”.
And I stand by it. But while I was saying this in respect to the media underrating Curry, this is similar to how other NBA players are seeing it. They’ve accepted him as the greatest shooter of all time, but even that is limiting what Curry is.
Give props to Shaq for giving Giannis his props early, saying he’s the best player in the world after winning a championship, and now saying Curry is the best player in the world, but for the most part players, they don’t believe Curry is able to take over the game by himself, that he needs screens, that he needs Draymond and Klay to be Steph. And sure he may not power through people, but did everyone just forget two seasons ago when he led the league in scoring averaging 32 points a game? When he was cooking everyone?
Just because Curry runs through a bunch of screens doesn’t mean he also doesn’t score by himself. Curry tends to isolate less than other superstars which is why this conversation even begins. However, Steph does rank as one of the most efficient isolation players in the league. In 2020-2021 for all players averaging over 1 iso possession per game, Steph was 5th in points per iso possession. But the sample size was small simply because of the low iso frequency. It isn’t like he’s not creating shots. Let’s look at Game 4 in the NBA Finals. Moving off-ball, running off screens, these aren’t shots that were just there. These are shots created by Curry running tight routes, catching the ball the right way into the shot. But none of these are isos because Curry didn’t create a shot off the dribble.
The Warriors play with a faster pace and move the ball quick, usually ranking top 5 in the NBA. Curry himself prefers to attack quickly so rather than isolate the switch, man just takes the opportunity to cook.
But we can even look at something so simple as finishing. Again, Steph is not powering his way through the paint, but what he is doing is being one of the most efficient finishers in the NBA. Again, Curry isn’t a leader in drives per game, more like top 40 in the NBA, still more than a lot of player. Yet he is usually amongst the league leaders in finishing inside the paint, even shooting 70% from the paint in 2016, higher than LeBron.
And again, I will always say this, if it was so easy to do what Curry does, constantly run the entire game, juking defenders without the ball, everyone would do it. And because Curry isn’t 6’ 6” or above, his size is a liability which is rightfully so. This isn’t a pound for pound conversation. However we’ve never said that about Kevin Durant while he was winning Finals MVPs.
Just a double standard when it comes to Curry but I’ll admit, this is a legitiment claim. However, more players bring up the flaws in Curry’s offensive game. *But what do you think? Is Curry in the conversation for best player in the NBA?*

I respectfully disagree with you to some degree on that "athleticism" part...actually Steph has work on his physical strength and pliability which in effect has increased his athleticism. Respectable but IMO curry is better and it’s pretty obvious. Giannis has every single physical advantage and is more dominant than Steph yet he struggled and lost to Boston while Steph destroyed them and made it look easy. Now sure it may have been easier because all their starters were healthy while Gianni’s was without Khris Middleton but, the warriors were struggling near the end of the regular season and had to go through a lot of stuff yet they came out on top. Besides Denver Steph didn’t have to go up against an as injury plagued conference so it was a more difficult yet they made it look ez. The NBA has a lot of names in this conversation. I think the league has more talent and skill today than at any point in history. (Others are free to disagree.) It's true, Curry is a system player, and he is not always the go-to option on his own squad, so he doesn't always collect stats that leap off the page and hurt your eyeballs. But he is not only a scorer and playmaker. He's also directly responsible for the success of his teammates. His plus-minus is large. His gravity is ridiculous. If you try to stop him one-on-one, it can't be done; that's a green light for Curry, and he can shoot the lights out and drive with high efficiency. But if you resort to ganging up on him to stop him, his teammates will do the scoring. Nobody has Curry's gravity, not to this extent. Like any NBA player, Curry can have an off night, or his teammates can be injured. You have to hope for one or the other to happen if you want a win when Curry is playing. It's hard to say who is the best player with conviction, but if you press me up against a wall and hold a box of chemically-preserved, sugary cereal to my head, I'll go with Curry. Just don't make me eat that awful stuff, please!

To me, 3 possessions were especially impressive -1) with 4:00 remaining in Q4, he dribbled the ball what seemed like forever with the attention of 3 defenders and then hit a floater from the free throw line, after all that dribbling to hit a long floater with amazing touch when most players would be too exhausted or too pumped up to have that degree of touch, that play took the life out of the Celtics and their fans, 2) then with 1:45 remaining in Q4, he threw the ball to Draymond at the free throw line and then moved without the ball to get an opening from White to hit a 3 another dagger, 3) then with 1:25 to go in the 4th, he drew 2 defenders White and Tatum and threw a wrap-around Tatum’s body pass to Draymond in the corner - Marcus Smart the NBA defensive player of the year was sitting in the paint ready to help and seem to lose sight of ball, frozen while Draymond already received the ball and took a step towards the basket. Game 4 was when Steph recognized that the aggressive Celtic fans seemed to affect Draymond in Q1, Steph recognized this and started to beat his chest and bark at the Celtics fans as if to say“come after me, come after me” essentially protecting his teammate to divert the Celtic fans away from Draymond, to give Draymond space to recover - WOW!! Steph is truly a magician with and without the ball, totally unselfish, a team first player, without a giant ego that most NBA superstars have today. If KD, Lebrun, the Greek were only 6-3, they would still be good, but I don’t think they would be in the top 5 of today’s players. I feel so lucky to be an NBA fan in the era of Steph Curry.

Unlike the GOAT conversation where people are arguing whether it's MJ, Lebron, Wilt or Kareem or anyone else, there is not a debate anymore when people call Steph as the greatest shooter of all time. Even fans of the opposing team were either electrified or turn speechless whenever Curry make his shots, wondering how it happened. With that being said, Curry being one of the best player out there should not even be a question. There are really people out there who keeps denying Steph's greatness. Same thing happening to Lebron. As we say here in the Philippines, people will keep throwing stones to a healthy, fruit bearing tree . Which means if you are so great and an achiever, people will always throw negative stuff at you until they make you fall.

If we're measuring impact then Curry has been the best player in the league since 2014/15, but if you're looking at 'Best player' like it's 1v1 or your perceived notions of what a great player is supposed to look and play like then you might not see things that way. Frankly there hasn't been a player that has impacted winning more than Curry since 2014/15, and when it's all said and done people will look back on this era of basketball and wonder why it wasn't considered Stephen Curry's era. Right now people are too bias, when the kids who aren't even born yet check basketball reference they're going to question what a lot of the old timers (us) are talking about if they don't have Steph firmly in their top 10.

@@isaacdebeila8085 bro what? he went to 8 straights finals in the 2010s and was on top of the league for most of it. the reason you think he had to "repackage his game" is because he was constantly improving his game, especially in Miami. He’s got nothing else to prove….. but I can see the GSW winning it all again next yr (BACK TO BACK) and that will open a whole different set of conversation cause he would have 5 chips then!! Never been swept 🧹 or lost in 5 (unlike Lebron or mj both with multiples), longest on the road playoff win streak in history still ongoing. Bron went to Miami to play with Wade and Bosh and said he was gonna win more than four and eeked out two. Got one off the Warriors going down 3-1 with Steph MCL hobbled and winning after Bogut goes down and a whole bunch of wild calls. And then gets a bubble championship after an offseason between the playoffs and the regular season with no travel coming downstairs shooting jn the gym. Y’all even know he has the most turnovers in history? But all u hear from the media is Lebron always makes the right decisions. Steph won more titles quicker and even let KD wear the bus driver uniform while sitting in the back for 2 of em. Curry is the best player to me because he not only does his thing but he makes others better enough to keep coming back winning championships some what like the 80's Lakers! To me he is the smartest also and that is why Golden State build players around him. He's not talk and strong yet he keeps winning. No one can take that from him. Especially not his adversaries saying dumb shit that makes him even better. I bet he be like let them talk. He just gets them back on the court, that is what I would do!

In military terms, Curry is both a Force Multiplier and a MOAB.
