Why Plumbing Pipes make Noise and how to stop it?
Pipes vibration, Humming sound, Banging, Whistling and other noises.
Do you have Pipes that Vibrate, Bang or Whistle?
In this Video I’m going to explain to you all about hammering pipes within the wall, whistling noises, noisy toilets and how to stop them.
Please don’t forget to support my channel by subscribing and pressing the like button.
You can also leave me a comment if you have any related questions and I will try my best to answer them. Back to the topic, You should know that there are many different reasons behind a noisy pipe. But lets start with pipes which Bang or hammer within the walls.
In this case you need to run a test and figure out, when, exactly the hammering happens!
Does it happen only when you turn a tap off? Or it happens even when the water flows?
If it happens only when you turn the tap off, then it means the tap shuts very fast and forces the water to come to a sudden stop. The water does not compress and it has a lot of energy. Therefore if the tap closes itself fast then the water has nowhere to go and will cause the pipes to vibrate. Dishwashers are good examples for this case. Now let’s take a look at the best solution for it. Installing a Hammer-arrestor or anti-hammer device on your pipes is usually the best approach and it will act as a shock absorber, there are different types of anti-hammer devices available in the market. But let me show you, how I make one my self or how a plumber makes one. This is a piece of pipe that I have here, and let’s imagine that this is a supply line for a shower. All I need to do is to cut the pipe and make a branch and then cap the branch off. What this branch does, is to provide extra space for the water to travel. The air will be trapped in this branch and we all know that the air can compress. Therefore it creates an extra space for the water to escape. Clamping the pipes to studs within the walls might also stop pipes from hammering in some cases but in this case installing anti-hammer device is much easier. You might have noticed that the pipes whistle while the water flows, which in this case the Mineral build ups like calcium from the hard water might be the cause of whistling sound. Which in this case, you need to find out which tap is causing the whistling and replace the washers or the cartridge. The other scenario is that the whistling happens right after you flush a toilet, which in this case you need to figure out if the sound is coming from the filler valve inside the toilet tank or the valve on the supply line. And then you need to replace either the shut off valve or the toilet filler valve. What makes troubleshooting complicated is when there are multiple causes for the noisy pipes. Which in this case I recommend to call a plumber in you area for help.
also In this video you can find solution for Plumbing pipes make laud noise the first part of the video talks about Pipes make noise behind the wall and if your issue is with Noisy pipes in other parts of the house then you can escape the video to the part that concern your issue. Usually Pipes hammering if they are not strapped or clamped properly behind the wall which i will discus further in my future videos. How to fix noisy pipes becomes tricky if you have never dealt with such a problem before but by watching this video you can at least get the idea of how and Why pipes make noise. some time it can be tricky even for the experienced plumbers to Stop laud noisy pipes. However, a well experienced plumber should always be able to come up with a solution with any kind of Plumbing pipe noises. for example in some cases Pipes make noise when water is turned on and in some other cases pipes make noise only when you turn the tap off. in this video i explain why your Pipes are making noise and i even show you about Pipes make noise after flushing toilet. most common issue discussed in this video is about Pipes make noise when water is running and I show you how to deal with such situation. if you pay attention to the part of the video when i turn the tap of the you notice that in my case Pipes make a knocking sound and i could easily fix it by installing a hammer arrestor device. a friend of mine called me today and told me that he had Pipes make noise when washer is on, and he fixed them by just creating a branch for the pipe to work as a shock absorber and this is how I got the idea of making this video but your case might be different and you might have Pipes make squeaking noise or Shaking pipes but I promise you that this method works for any cases. which includes Vibrating pipes and water hammer issue.

My hot water heater went out and turned the water off to it and started hearing a whistling sound. Everyone I asked didn't know what it was and my son in laws advice didn't work. After watching this video I opened the lid on the toilet and the noise was there. I messed with the top of the flush thing and that stopped the noise. Need to replace it but I can do that. We suffered with that whistling for at least 2 months. Your advice was spot on, I cannot thank you enough!

You don’t need an hour lecture on this. Turn off the main water source. Turn on all the faucets in your house. Wait for 5 minutes to release the air trapped. Then turn off all the faucets. Turn the water back slowly until the desired pressure. It’s fixed. THAT SIMPLE.

Not to come off like a smart ass but I'm curious why set out to watch videos on something your knowledgeable at? Why not make a video? Some people go in depth so people understand what's going on not just how to fix it. I can change a light bulb but I find it amazing to see the process of making and how they work.

If it's trapped air what would cause it not to bleed out while water is being used? Is it the (0) atom from the water replenishing the air back into the lines? What if anything pushes out the excess air when the water is turned off or only allows air out not in . At that point the air is stagnant. Do I need to treat the lines afterwards? Also my desired pressure is a lot. So what would you recommend to do and what happens if I tried exactly what you explained numerous times and still get the same outcome? Is there a time for certain square footage of a home or quantity of faucets? Do I allow longer time to allow the air to escape? I have questions I need answers and seeing as you are clearly the professional here please tell me or even better make a how to video please and thank you..

Do not make a hammer arrester the way he said. The air in the new branch will get absorbed by the water over time. The new branch will become full of water so the hammer arrester effect will go away and the new capped off branch will be full of stagnant water.

I have a whistle that just started the week I replaced a kitchen sink faucet and a 1/4-turn ball valve supply feed under the sink. What is puzzling is that the whistle seems to always be in one spot right behind the bathroom sink no matter which plumbing fixtures are in use. My washing machine running causes the noise, the kitchen sink (hot and cold), my bathroom sink and shower, and the 2nd bathroom's toilet. My toilet doesn't cause it and neither does the 2nd bathroom sink as well as a cold water feed line off my washing machine's cold water spigot that goes to my fridge. Flummoxed.

It sounds like the pipe is expanding from the hot water entering it. It could be that the supports are too tight and don't let the pipe expand in diameter and in length. I've had some success in making the openings around the pipe a little bigger or using a tough non-metallic pad (maybe a resilient tough rubber) between the pipe and its supports. Hope it helps.

The below neighbor uses the high flow setting quite often in the day, and it affects my ears as I have an ear condition called tinnitus. When the by pass is off, we have full water pressure in our house. However, when we turn on the water in the house we hear some loud noises. Seems like the noise come from the pipes from the water softener to the house. I clean the tank, put WaterBoss - Universal water softener cleaner and ran manually regenerate. Still, when turning on a faucet inside the house, I hear like a fog horn noise. Actuallu, the noise stays even without turning a facet on. Any advice ? and thanks for any ideas. Thank you, Gabe

for the washing machine i recommend to replace the shut-off valve for the cold water and most probably your problem will be resolved, but for the bathroom i need more explanation (I need to know when you hear the sound and when you don't) only when flushing the toilet and running the tap at the same time or every time you run the sink no matter if you flush the toilet or not.

@@PipeWrencher Thank you! 1) I think shut-off valve is soldered and I probably need to cut the drywall to access it. Would prefer to install Hammer Arrestor if that would fix it. What do you think? I closed the tap a bit for cold water to reduce the flow of water and sound goes away. 2) re toilet: If flush toilet alone or cold water tap in the sink, no sound. When both are running at the same time then sound comes. I closed valve a bit toilet bowl to reduce the water flow and sound stops. I was going to install Water Hammer Arrestor for both. Thanks again!

@PipeWrencher 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think that hammer arrestor resolves your problem, most probably your issue is combination of things, you need to check or even replace a couple of things to get rid of the problem. You need to inspect toilet filler valve, toilet shut off valve, the tap's cartridge and shut off valves. There is hight chance that your problem is related to faucet cartridge.

Take Pipe Wrencher's advice and install a baffle of sorts, such as the homemade/manufactured Hammer Arrester on the hot water supply. If it only occurs with one fixture and the with the hot water supply itself, it may be the valve supplying that fixture. Moen, Delta and other reputable suppliers will give you a free cartridge for their products. It's worth taking this route before opening a wall to install an arrestor. Good luck!

My problem is that the pipes inside the walls start to vibrate violently and randomly for about 3 minutes any time of the day or night. I sounds like when you drill into concrete! It looks like it starts from the boiler. But the sound in the boiler is much less than the sound of the pipe vibrating in the wall several feet away. The plumber changed a tube in the boiler but that didn't solve the problem.

thats a very old method, now we are using resters.. that method you are using, water will build up in that cap off tube and the waters toward the top part will be stagnet and bacteria will build up which can cause sickness.. theres something calk rester hammer or something that u can use instead of the cap off pipe.
