My hot water heater went out and turned the water off to it and started hearing a whistling sound. Everyone I asked didn't know what it was and my son in laws advice didn't work. After watching this video I opened the lid on the toilet and the noise was there. I messed with the top of the flush thing and that stopped the noise. Need to replace it but I can do that. We suffered with that whistling for at least 2 months. Your advice was spot on, I cannot thank you enough!

Hello I enjoyed your video. I have a a Fleck 5600 with a mechanical valve about 6 years old. When the water softener by pass is on, we loose water pressure in our house. When the by pass is off, we have full water pressure in our house. However, when we turn on the water in the house we hear some loud noises. Seems like the noise come from the pipes from the water softener to the house. I clean the tank, put WaterBoss - Universal water softener cleaner and ran manually regenerate. Still, when turning on a faucet inside the house, I hear like a fog horn noise. Actuallu, the noise stays even without turning a facet on. Any advice ? and thanks for any ideas. Thank you, Gabe

Hi, thanks for this informative video. I have a heating pipe running the length of my basement apartment and it bangs/rattles. The pipe is exposed, hanging about a foot below the celling. It sounds like the pipe is expanding from the hot water entering it. It could be that the supports are too tight and don't let the pipe expand in diameter and in length. I've had some success in making the openings around the pipe a little bigger or using a tough non-metallic pad (maybe a resilient tough rubber) between the pipe and its supports. Hope it helps.

My pipes bang somewhat after the installation of Oates brand hammer arrestees at the new washer. Not sure if the arrestors were installed properly. They are in a horizontal or inclined direction. Does it matter?
@tonymanero554412 күн бұрын
Position doesn’t matter, up, down sideways or any angle. Oatey’s spec sheet says this, but check for yourself. You can’t really install the arrestors incorrectly as long as they don’t leak water. I’m suspecting that they were installed in a branch that isn’t isolated from a fast shut off valve like dishwasher or clothes washer that is on another branch, which means the shock water isn’t reaching the arrester to absorb. The Oatey spec sheet also shows a cross section of the gas filled chamber that absorbs the water shock.

Whenever the downstair neighbor switches to strong flow setting I hear a high pitched water stream noise in my kitchen. The below neighbor uses the high flow setting quite often in the day, and it affects my ears as I have an ear condition called tinnitus. But it's loud enough that even someone without tinnitus would find it annoying (the nails against chalkboard type of sound)..why the noise is coming, Really appreciate any help, thank you!

You don’t need an hour lecture on this. Turn off the main water source. Turn on all the faucets in your house. Wait for 5 minutes to release the air trapped. Then turn off all the faucets. Turn the water back slowly until the desired pressure. It’s fixed. THAT SIMPLE.

If it's trapped air what would cause it not to bleed out while water is being used? Is it the (0) atom from the water replenishing the air back into the lines? What if anything pushes out the excess air when the water is turned off or only allows air out not in . At that point the air is stagnant. Do I need to treat the lines afterwards? Also my desired pressure is a lot. So what would you recommend to do and what happens if I tried exactly what you explained numerous times and still get the same outcome? Is there a time for certain square footage of a home or quantity of faucets? Do I allow longer time to allow the air to escape? I have questions I need answers and seeing as you are clearly the professional here please tell me or even better make a how to video please and thank you..

I have a whistle that just started the week I replaced a kitchen sink faucet and a 1/4-turn ball valve supply feed under the sink. What is puzzling is that the whistle seems to always be in one spot right behind the bathroom sink no matter which plumbing fixtures are in use. My washing machine running causes the noise, the kitchen sink (hot and cold), my bathroom sink and shower, and the 2nd bathroom's toilet. My toilet doesn't cause it and neither does the 2nd bathroom sink as well as a cold water feed line off my washing machine's cold water spigot that goes to my fridge. Flummoxed.

for the washing machine i recommend to replace the shut-off valve for the cold water and most probably your problem will be resolved, but for the bathroom i need more explanation (I need to know when you hear the sound and when you don't) only when flushing the toilet and running the tap at the same time or every time you run the sink no matter if you flush the toilet or not.
@johnbruck68344 жыл бұрын
@@PipeWrencher Thank you! 1) I think shut-off valve is soldered and I probably need to cut the drywall to access it. Would prefer to install Hammer Arrestor if that would fix it. What do you think? I closed the tap a bit for cold water to reduce the flow of water and sound goes away. 2) re toilet: If flush toilet alone or cold water tap in the sink, no sound. When both are running at the same time then sound comes. I closed valve a bit toilet bowl to reduce the water flow and sound stops. I was going to install Water Hammer Arrestor for both. Thanks again!
@PipeWrencher4 жыл бұрын
I don't think that hammer arrestor resolves your problem, most probably your issue is combination of things, you need to check or even replace a couple of things to get rid of the problem. You need to inspect toilet filler valve, toilet shut off valve, the tap's cartridge and shut off valves. There is hight chance that your problem is related to faucet cartridge.

Take Pipe Wrencher's advice and install a baffle of sorts, such as the homemade/manufactured Hammer Arrester on the hot water supply. If it only occurs with one fixture and the with the hot water supply itself, it may be the valve supplying that fixture. Moen, Delta and other reputable suppliers will give you a free cartridge for their products. It's worth taking this route before opening a wall to install an arrestor. Good luck!

Do not make a hammer arrester the way he said. The air in the new branch will get absorbed by the water over time. The new branch will become full of water so the hammer arrester effect will go away and the new capped off branch will be full of stagnant water.
@tonymanero554412 күн бұрын
Yes, that’s what I also observed. An arrestor chamber has a gas charged chamber that doesn’t allow the gas to leak into the water, and when the gas is compressed to absorb the water shock, the gas expands back to its charged position to standby for the next water hammer.

A branch is a dead leg and a dead leg can cause legionaries disease if not frequently used.

I was told by a plumber never block off a brach o drinking water pipes as the water in the branch can go bad or stale and poison your water supply

At night, every time a toilet flushes, their is a loud whomp whomp, whomp whomp, whomp whomp, sound that comes from my bedroom wall. The other side of that wall is the garage. Anyone know what is this noise? Also, from the master bedroom, water seems to be leaking or not working properly.

Really difficult to say, you really need to call a local plumber to look at it.

@@PipeWrencher I'm not a plumber so I don't know exact terminology, but I adjusted the main water line outside to a lower pressure, and the problem has gone away, thank you for responding.

Aha, now it make sense, most probably you have a gate valve before the meter! Do you?
@roush264 жыл бұрын
@@PipeWrencher Oh I don't know, it's a valve outside the house, underground, under a cover.
@PipeWrencher4 жыл бұрын
@@roush26 that valve most probably belongs to the municipality, depends where you live. call them up, tell them to replace it if it belongs to them. your problem is most probably from one of the valves, now finding the right valve needs a bit of patience.

The problem with ur solution is that sooner or later the water absorbs the air and the problem restarts. The second is bacterial growth possibly legionella.

It is a valid method and is a plumbing code in Ontario. and plumbers go by the book.

I am telling you. It sounds like a horror movie, my pipes BANG HARD!!! Even through the night, when no taps are ran. Or early in the morning before anyone even gets out of bed. They knock every single day. And there is like movement, or fidgeting sounds that come from somewhere under my roof, but above my ceiling. Please HELP? 🙏🏼
