In my opinion, the reason all original anime end up being so good is because they aren't held back by the limitations of adaptations- in manga or novels, there are usually certain events that occur, things happen in certain order, certain scenes are drawn in a certain way; the story and characters are laid out and adapting that properly can be difficult. However, for original anime, they can do whatever the fuck they want, however the fuck they want.

Given that "RE:" is historically used as a shorthand for "In Regards to", it would logically mean that the title of this anime is not meant as "Re-creators", but _"In Regards To Creators"_. Which, of course, is entirely appropriate, given the plot.

Hey now that Re:Creators finished do you think you might make a final thoughts on it? I really loved the anime and agree with all the points you mentioned, all the characters are really memorable and unique in their own ways and one of the biggest points that I liked of the anime is the relationships between the creators and their creations how Aliceterias and her creators relation changed after a certain understanding and how each character has a different take on and view of their creators being a sort of fate. I truly enjoyed this anime with it's idea, action scenes and music and highly recommend it to anyone to watch, something I've noticed though is that people are so impatient and dislike the dialogue that occurs many times.

This show in particular is by far one of my favourite. Being able to sense this deep connection with these 'creations' as they're brought upon from their world into reality and then having their own independent thoughts and ideals being challenged. The part about the 'weak cliche' characters is suppose to help us relate with existing ones and then develop them along the way I believe. I like way they have these clash of ideals due to the way they're written and then developing from their to have their own self-awareness and developing/changing past what they're suppose to be as mentioned in Episode 7. There was also this one part where Meteora talked about when she played and read the game from where she existed and then accepting her fate and individual self even though she's supposedly just a fictional character. While some do share some negative sentiments about the aspects of being a Created (mainly the ones on Sota's side) and how their Worlds are suffering their own conflicts but they also understand that the Creators of Whatever don't just half-ass their creations just for pure entertainment, because a Creator puts in love and care into their products, paying attention to detail to create believable fictional environments and writing stories that, even though is causing suffering to the Created, is meant to tell a purpose, to send a message, to the consumers. That's what creating a story is about: Stories are meant to tell a purpose, to send a message. A World doesn't just suffer for a 3-second half-assed laughter, it's supposed to suffer to send a message, tell morals, give teaching, enlighten people, etc. And the reason why Creators are so passionate to create Worlds is because they want to tell a story and to share their ideas. To touch hearts, or wreck them, all for sending messages. And this side, understand that, causing harm to Creators or forcing them to re-write everything is just not going to work because besides field-testing it, as mentioned by Meteora - Even though she's just entertainment, she's still going to protect what her Creators have created because she cherishes and respects the lessons and events she's went through in her "own life" and the gifts that are given to her, only made possible by the Creators. That's what I believe the story is trying to convey.

13:08 "we'll see how well that goes" haaaahaha *cries* But thank you for making this video, MB; I seriously love Re:CREATORS and I wish I could find all of the fans it supposedly has so far lol. I'm surprised to see so many dislikers in the comments... I think he really hit the nail on the head here, which is that it's not entirely about what the show has _already_ done that makes it so intriguing (although the most recent episodes are some of the best imo, with the introduction of the final character), but rather just about the sheer potential of what this premise _could_ explore, which it has already begun to do in all of the different ways he mentioned. At some point he says something to the extent of "I love shows that fully explore every possible angle and idea of its premise" (paraphrased but that's essentially what it was) and damn if that doesn't completely sum up why I adore this show so far. None of the characters were love at first sight for me or anything like other things, but I still like all of them to some degree (particularly Yuya, Mamika, and Meteora), and the fact that they're all so different because of the different genres they come from is what makes their dynamic together so _great._ Seriously, this show just has so much it could do with the amazing idea for a plot it has, and I'm beyond happy it's getting 22 episodes and the time it deserves to do that. It feels like a love letter to all us nerds who fall in love with fictional characters and stories, and I love that. xD

TBH I like the anime. Even with the dialogue, I was interested at listening to the characters and that's saying a lot from someone who has ADHD like me. What I love about this anime is how characters project themselves. My only complaint is that the show seem to concentrate on some characters more than any other. The dude with the gun barely had screen time. He's mysterious and all which is interesting but his absence makes me think the show is cramming too many characters into one story. :/ It's a good anime and I would love to see the next episode. As a former storywriter, I love it how the characters interact and progress the plot (yes, even those long dialogues of info dump) but I wouldn't say it'll be a classic. It's just too early for that.

Guy from the Internet Me now being at Episode 21 I say it concluded pretty well(their is one last episode that is most likely epilogue) if you look back I think the pacing really isn't that bad it's more of the platform it's on. It kept getting delayed which made it look like it was badly paced. From what I see you have 1.5 to 2.5 episodes of Dialogue The Who have about 2 to 2.5 episodes of action.(I'm kinda a sucker for dialogue but I can understand others point of view.) I think this series would actually be very nice if binged watched

Essence Studio The last episode was great. There was so much jammed into it however, it somehow felt rushed in that episode. If there is a fault with this series, it would be pacing. The show deliver so many ideas and rich characters and it makes the show so amazing but it is also its downfall. With so many things going on, it seems to me they are having trouble with pacing the episodes on how to deliver so many ideas. As I see it, it went from a slow paced arc of the main characters in preparation filling us out with all the info we need for the final battle and when the final battle came, it was just an explosion of plot twist and turns that made me rewatch it to get a grasp on what's going on. Here's hoping Re:Creators will be remade with a much more steady pace in the story.

I'm only on episode 4, but at the very onset of Re:creators the "protagonist" says that he is merely a narrative vehicle, a side character, to the main story unfolding. Maybe he becomes more important later on and I'm just not there yet, but thus far it seems like a rather clever design trick to have us experience a plot full of fantastic and over-the-top tropey anime characters through a side-kick. I certainly can't speak for all of the characters, but I thought the purpose of Sota was to be a poorly fleshed-out side character.

I feel like the only real let down for the show is the overload of exposition early on and early in the second act. It's very good with tacitly conveying character motivation, but boooy do they have trouble explaining the complicated plot. Also, Amazon did a REALLY bad job with translating the dialog as the show went on, cause all the stuff with explaining the bird cage got really confusing, especially when the twist happened with the MUP's plan to exploit it. I only managed to get it through context.

I never get the criticism of it being having "too much exposition". I mean, does anyone even watch anime before 2000? Hell, most long running shows can sometimes have half an episode of prior exposition being presented - it's not a *good* thing, mind you, but it's telling of how a lot of anime just has a lot of exposition *in general* . Especially before the 2000-10 era - Shows like NGE, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and even shows in the modern era like Attack on Titan or every iteration of the Monogatari franchise are all heavy on exposition and - especially before 2000 (and Monogatari) - overly complicated dialogue. I don't hear *near* the amount of complaints about those issues compared to Re:Creators. It makes no sense, unless there's just inherent bias towards Re:Creators for whatever reason. I feel like people went into the series expecting one thing, and getting something completely different that tainted their view on the show. If I remember correctly, people were hyping it up as some sort of meta-fiction battle royale ala the FATE series, but it wound up being a comprehensive thesis on what it means to be a creator of any kind and the importance and meaning of media for the general public. It's not a simple show by any stretch of the imagination - quite a few people misinterpret various plot elements claiming "deus ex machina" or "asspull", when - in fact - it's all there, explained, if you just do what any person does when reading a book and read between lines and make inferences based on that. Like any good media, it doesn't tell you all the answers - you have to come to those conclusions yourself and they may make you feel ripped off or they may be transcendental in nature. It's all subjective - it is media after all - but, objectively, touting that there's "too much exposition" that it makes it bad is just an uninformed justification. I think another issue regarding why people feel this way about the exposition is that, on a week-to-week basis, it definitely feels heavy handed. However, going back over it again, there's not near as much of it as people felt there was. It's perfectly in-line with most 22-26 episode series. Hell, Fate/ZERO had one of the most exposition-heavy introductions *ever* , and it's still regarded as practically mandatory viewing by the vast majority of the anime fandom. If you can bypass *that* , there should be no reason Re:Creators' exposition should be used as an argument against it, at all. It is what it is, but I think going back and viewing it a second time yields a far greater understanding and acceptance of said dialogue and its purpose in the story - as nothing spoken is being spoken *just* for expository purposes except its recap episode, which is probably the greatest recap episode in the history of recaps. Recap.

@@ojisankusai you hinted at it, but isn't it funny when people bitch about Re:Creators having too much exposition, only to later see those same people whine when they don't understand Altair's powers? It's not just this anime either, I've seen countless other anime where people whine "there's too much talking!" then later whine "why can x character do this all of a sudden now?" when it was 99% of the time foreshadowed/hinted in one of those early "too much talking!" spots. I get it when there's too much dialogue. Fine. But I think the reason the amount works in Re:Creators is that this is, like MB said, a "story about stories". You really do get the sense that they want to flesh out characters before conflicts. And this show clearly has great story/character/world building material. Heck, even action heavy shows like the ones you talked about have just as much, if not MORE exposition as this. And people don't whine about them..

I thought it was an action junkfood but I'm actually surprised on how it went and I love it for that. Recreators' core theme is acceptance more so than being meta, granted that the message screams louder than the plot. It started because Sota wasn't able to accept that Setsuna was a better artist and the plot was also resolved not by defeating Altair physically but by him finally accepting that he fucked up. Altair is the manifestation of rejection created by Setsuna before her suicide, the characters can't accept at the beginning that they weren't "real" or that their pain was created for the sake of entertainment, they can't even power up unless the fans of their series accept the change that the authors made. It's a show that emphasizes on what a creation is for different people. Unlike Bakuman and Shirobako, this anime is a very roundabout way of telling the story that revolves around creators hence, RE:Creators. Creators are people, they get frustrated, inspired, get jelous, tell a story/message. I love how they added fanart into the anime itself as well and just for that, I feel that the passion in this anime makes it stand out.

After deciding to become a writer, this became my favourite show. I think one of its major flaws is that the premise and philosophies resonate with me so well as a writer, and people who don’t create things will probably struggle to identify with the show’s core themes as deeply. The animation and music are outstanding, but that can easily be found in so many other shows. The characters are interesting, but I think it is difficult for them to resonate with the viewer. The core conflicts revolve around accepting or rejecting reality and their own world. What it means to create something and have it accepted or rejected by others.

I don't get why people are shitting on this for the premise not being new. There are a shit ton of anime that have a theme of being in a high school yet people are on board with it, especially this season with a show like Bastard Magic Instructor, where the girls are half naked. I know that premise and theme are two different things but they can still be compared. Obviously, 'Fictional characters come to life' isn't new or original, but its not like its an over saturated market like you see with zombies in TV. There have been relatively few anime, I can't really name any, that have this premise and it seems to be doing a good job with it. So why don't we just stop throwing shit out like its unoriginal and just enjoy it for what it is. And also I see people talking about how the dialogue scenes are insufferable, and while I do agree they are a bit long, I don't really have a problem with them. They always talk about something that is somewhat interesting and relevant to the plot. And any time this takes away from the action of the anime is made up with episodes like 6.

Having watched it to the end, I can say that everything here is correct. It's almost worth going through the entire show, no matter how much you hate it or are bored by it, just to see the second-to-last episode. Most shows seem to drop their "the villain has an understandable reason" bomb in the middle; this one drops it practically at the end. I also give this show a lot of credit for making a character who appears to have no point but to be overpowered and too random to really make sense in the story, and then make the character suddenly important at the end and you can how everything else set it up. That it is a one-season anime and the way it's written makes it impossible to really expand it into more seasons just breaks my little heart. Also, both openings are glorious. Also, the self-insert fanfiction episode gave me all the lulz.

One thing I love about your videos is that you are able to extract the core of so many aspects about a specific work of fiction where I am struggling to put it into words. As a creator I enjoyed the show in so many ways especially because the characters were so relatable when it comes to their mindsets regarding the creative process. I even strongly identify myself with one of them. For me, Shunma Suruga was one of the most interesting creator characters despite the fact that she has just a minimalistic minor role, and that's because she thinks in a similar way to getting inspiration. After learning about the real existence of her own character which comes along with the certainty that his suffering about his loss is also real she does not feel guilty at all. When her creation eventually confronted her and asked her why she did such a thing she simply answered that it's just because it would make her story more interesting. I can totally relate to that high priority. Wish there could have been more interaction between her and her creation.

Hi, I just finished the anime last night. When it ended I was left with a feeling of longing for more, satisfaction, and sense that it told all that it intended to tell and did so brilliantly. You are 110% correct in your analysis here. It doesn't ham fistly deliver it's philosophy and character development. It was refreshing for someone like me, where I felt like I kept being able to know exactly where the plot would go and how things would develop. If you only come for the action, yes, you might be bored during the dialogue , but if you want to understand 'll the show has to offer, it keeps consistently showing you how creators and creations interact, realistically how characters solve problems. And builds to a satisfying conclusion. I don't want a sequel because sequels have a habit of opening up plot holes and undoing emotional impact. I loved it because it was complete rather than having huge cliff hangers and leaving open events for possible continuation.

Yes! This show has been one of my favourites so far, it may be my appreciation for meta-narratives, but this one in particular has been an absolute delight, between the commentary on genre-conventions and generic characterisation, I am convinced that the creators had thought of absolutely every possibility of what could happen if such a scenario occurred and then worked into a narrative structure. I'm sure a lot of people are frustrated by a lack of action scenes and the myriad of scenes of characters talking, but I think those scenes are an absolute delight to listen to as they such interesting things to say. Though I have noticed this show has been one of the most contentious this season as well, curiously so. I do feel like this show would be harder to appreciate if you didn't find the commentary on genre conventions lacking or uninteresting, although I'd argue this show equally works on merits besides just it being meta.

As someone who aspires to have stories of my own published and has spent over a decade exploring my own characters and story worlds through art and writing, this really speaks to me. The idea of meeting my own characters is something I've given a lot of casual thought to- which ones I would get along with, which ones would be difficult because of what I've done to them and those they care about, and those who I would flat out not want to meet because I know they would probably kill me. All these possibilities, and many more I never gave much consideration to (never really had a more child friendly world like Mamika's, so that story arch was particularly fascinating to me), are being explored by this show. The point where Selesia's creator stands up for her really hit home in terms of the deep yet somewhat complicated relationship a writer or artist has with their own characters, and how much they care for them. And yeah, some beats you don't expect it to take (when the military got involved I was expecting the exact same thing as you, and was similarly pleasantly surprised to find they weren't the incompetent idiots media has taught me they are) were really refreshing. As long as you can accept the fact that it's not high action all the time, which I really can, I find some of the quieter moments quite powerful, this is a wonderful anime. Just apparently one with a very specific market audience. Makes me sad so many people seem to hate it. :( Or rather, their apathy compared to the love of some causes it to be expressed as something harsher than it is.

The amount of hate for this show is surprising, as I did *NOT* see this hate anywhere else. I can tell from the comments that a lot of you probably just paused the video after seeing the title or after he mentioned other classics to make a snarky remark about Re: Creators being a "classic" and left without listening to the points that were made in this video. And there were a lot of good points made. I mean Jesus, where my Re: Creators fans at????

Galad I'd say it's average right now not at its best. It can be better but it's definitely one of the better shows this season. I like the flow of the story, it doesn't feel rushed, and I like my information episodes more than just fight scenes. It's just lower than Boku no hero and aot, but that itself isn't bad.

Boku no Hero and AOT have plenty of hype behind them. BnH is legitimately entertaining in every way possible. A huge cast of likable characters that don't feel left behind and in my opinion is the standard that shounen anime should be held to. Shounen such as these anyway. BnH is a sequel to an already established series though. So is AOT, which is amazing as well. But when I look at what Re: Creators is doing, especially since it's an original story, I can't ignore it's direction. And it's characters are crazy endearing for me. MC Sota is frustrating me a bit right now, but other than that, I'm loving it.

YES PLEASE! I know there are tokusatsu youtubers out there but I've always wanted to see an anime youtuber tackle tokusatsu. It's a very underrated form of Japanese media that I sometimes feel doesn't get as much appreciation as it should. It always makes me wonder how the big anime community would reaction to Kamen Rider Gaim and Kamen Rider Ex-aid if they were actually anime. The closest thing we've got to tokusatsu anime is Samurai Flamenco and the up and coming Gridman anime studio trigger is doing.

Yolodrigo Love you Jotaro, but it's clearly has stated that Souta is not the main main character. This type of show relies on multiple protagonist, imagine Stardust Crusaders with only Jotaro? It would be the same here, so it's not fair to judge just Souta, but look at Meteora and Mamika, they became a decent well rounded characters.

Pretty sure the MC knows who created Altair, they had a falling out and she's at this time in the story to our knowledge, already dead from what we can gather. The MC isn't so much hesitant to talk about Altair, he's guilt ridden after realizing the person who created her in a fit of spite. It would also explain why Altair immediately recognized him, and him not recognizing her at first, he didn't draw her; but he knew where to start looking. Right now I'm curious as to whether or not one of the creations of our so called MC are going to come through, or perhaps he's somehow wrapped in the center of all of these events occuring and the notepad at the start was a clue. As a TL;DR this show has a great deal of potential, which is why it's on the watch list, but it's not quite classic material yet... It does have it's share of clever moments and the characters are fun if anything.

Every time he makes a sigh or a fucking whimper/moan or whatever, I get viscerally enraged. Who knows, maybe I was just in a bad mood when I was watching Re:Creators. But seriously I was hypersensitive to every single one of those unnecessarily angsty breaths that the MC was taking. And then of course there's the part where he unnecessarily keeps vital information a secret for what's probably going to turn out to be a patently stupid (AKA because I'm an angsty teenager) reason when he eventually does confess it.

I also think this anime is very likely to be a masterpiece. But as you can see in this comment section, the messages it's carrying affect only a part of the community. I think that to enjoy the long discussions of the show, having interest in the creation processes is quite necessary. And not everyone has it. I think the show has a target audience too small to be compared to "classics", although I think it shares the same level of quality. We'll see...

@BIackstrength

Well then you're probably not the "ideal target audience" for this anime. But I think anyone that has put some thinking into creation, and/or has already worked on creating a story or drawing original characters, will be able to understand and relate to the characters and the reflections they convey. Just the amount of possibilities offered by the show's universe is thrilling to me. And of course the credibility of the interactions between the characters and the coherence of the universe to the smallest details helps a lot for the immersion. Other than that, I think the animation is nice, and well directed so nothing lacking here. And the core message about the "passion of creation" and how it interacts with the "manga industry" makes it one of the best "meta" story I know. So yeah, in my opinion and if they keep this level of quality until the end, I'll consider it a masterpiece. But again, not a widely recognized one like Mother's Basement hopes it to be...

The problem with all this is the potential, yes she show had a lot of potential but that doesn't change that it did not do much with it, Re:Creators is more like the seasonal Anime people like to talk about and like for some reason even though it's actually pretty bad. Well, we were talking about the potential of the show... now that more episodes have been released... Some messages and ideas are still great, but overall, the potential is ruined... the scenario and the characters didn't keep up. And as Mother's Basement said, I think this concept is more suited to be the base of a game, not an anime.

I was legitmately stoked for this series for the first 2 or 3 episodes; however, they didn't handel their dialogue appropriately. while it had absolutely wonderful moments of characterization especially in respect to mamika, the rest of the world building is conveyed in boring scenes. The series set itself up as an action series, yet it carries itself like an fantasy novel. Expetiditon dumps like ep 4 loses the audience since it was not only just a basic "cafe scene" but one where too much information was conveyed verbally without a chance for the audience to fully feel like they understand the material. No lightbulbs were going off, instead it was the occasional "oh i guess this is happening now moments" this wasnt an isolated incident either. the way they handeled it made me wish it was a novel, becuase at this point reading the script would provide to be more entertaining. Visual media is a unique media but also one that is sometimes self destructive. The way information is handeled and conveyed has as much to do with the setting and action as the lines itself with really deep lines ruined by a bad set up. the show just doesnt seem to want to set up for the dialouge half the time. the show has shown us it can use unspoken words to communicate philosophy and character so these exposition dumps just seem that much more inane and lazy. the philosophical observations of a show are lost becuase the media that it conveys it does not support it well without at least interesting shots and camera work to complement it. tl;dr the dialouge thats supposed to be deep shocking and thought provoking falls flat on its face becuase it doesnt attempt to complement the medium it is protrayed in and how the show set itself up causing disinterest in the audience that just continues to mount

I watched this show right after marathoning season one of Attack on Titan, figuring it would be a satisfying, light-hearted anime. AoT broke me a little inside, because I tend to feel a real emotional impact when characters - especially well developed ones - die. And AoT is rather gruesome about it. So I needed something to cool off. For this reason, I was very happy when the series first started out! The tone felt calm, even if there was an element of mystery, and everything seemed to go smoothly for the protagonists, like how a typical soft story usually works. Every "Creation" the show introduced, from Light Novel Girl Selesia to the psychopathic Magane, was interesting and three-dimensional, and while their personalities definitely borrowed from common tropes in anime and gaming media, all of them refused to be defined by their tropes. In particular, I was really fond of Mamika. I liked the tragedy of her innocence and good heart conflicting with the harsh reality of the world around her, and eagerly awaited for her character to develop into something mature and strong. I wanted to see her grow and realize she was fighting on the wrong side. I wanted to see her try to consolidate her morals with the situation around her and find some sort of common ground. I wanted to see her gloriously overcome the limitations of her genre and setting to gain a sense of nuance and humanity, and return to the good guys' side at just the right moment in a scene of pure awesome. But then episode 8 happened. Some of what I hoped for happened - but not in the way I expected. I have to say, I love, love, love this anime. It knows when to be comedic, and it knows just when to punch your heart right in the dick (pardon my French). It's not perfect, yeah - but it's probably one of the best things I've watched in recent memory, and I can't wait to finish it. Thanks, Mother's Basement.
