I hear you have to get out of the cities to find more affordable housing. Italy the same way. Now that I’m retired, it’s time to explore these places!

Am I right in thinking that Portugal has never heard of solar panels, home battery packs, micro-grids and sustainable energy surpluses for free electricity, cooling and heating? Is it all down to the luck of sunny days in Portugal?

Our plan is to never pay rent again so we will purchase an apartment in Porto (Lisbon is out of our price range). I am in New York City (3 years away from retiring in Portugal) and if you think the rent is out of control in Portugal... I just did a quick search for a 2 bedroom rental and the prices are about $9,000 and go up to $50,000 A MONTH!!! I will be in Porto for a 1 month stay next November and I can't wait to get to know the city that will be my future home.

Hi Daphna, thank you for all the information. Would you be willing to share the rent you pay for this type of appartment? It is only to get an idea, if it is not too personal.

This video has nothing to do with the title. If rents in Portugal are now out of control it’s because of people like you who come to Portugal with your money, invest in real estate and then make it impossible for the Portuguese to live in their OWN country!
@lisabeaumont9 сағат бұрын
Absolutely. I lived in and around Lisbon for 4 years (2019-2022) and the reality is that the locals absolutely HATE the foreigners and they show it clearly in their disdainful faces in the streets, and say it very openly in facebook groups - they certainly don't hold back! Portugal has had its day for foreigners. Rents are through the roof and good luck finding a reliable builder to do up some old ruin unless you've got a bottomless pit of money, all the time in the world, and a project manager who is onto them every single day. Also, she's lying/wrong about Non-Habitual Residency - it most certainly does NOT apply to every foreigner AND it finished in 2024. Also, taxes are crazy which includes compulsory social security tax - and if you're an American you pay taxes in your own country AND in Portugal as there's no double-tax treaty. This video is nothing more than a "look at my radiant self" brag presumably in the hopes her ex-husband will see it.

Here in Santa Barbara, California the average 2 bed apartment is $3,000 a month.
@NigelHyphenJones2 күн бұрын
But you can drive to nearby LA and first cheap accommodation in comparison, so it depends on the town or city, like anywhere in the world. Try London or New York, then you will know what high rent is. A studio shoe box (20 sq meters) will cost you $ 3000 per month in a reasonable area of London.
