Information to help make an educated decision on the use of rock dust in your potting soil or garden.
Full Transcript of Video available at buildasoil.com...
Here at BuildASoil we grow in a No-Till style Potting soil system and many of the growers that follow this process use rock dust in their recipes and swear by it. In this video you'll find most of the information and sources used to formulate a decision on wether or not to use rock dust.

I like to add rock dust to my vermicompost media. It's good when rock dust is eaten by the worms, it makes these minerals immediately available to plants thru the worms castings.

Well spoken as always. You have a keen sense of how to deliver detail rich information in a direct, and concise way. Using facts and current scientific thinking interwoven with expected/potential grey areas as bricks, you are excellent at building beautifully structured understanding. Thank You! Integrity being a lost virtue lately it says alot about a person and a company to put forth a more complete and educational picture surrounding a topic instead of info guided by, and limited to, what might sell more of your specific products. Add 2 or 3 zeros to the view count and you may get close to the number of people who wish they could find solid explanations on these things so as to be confident in the decisions and adjustments they make. Thanks

Look at any volcano that's been dormant for a few years on the planet. Look around the base of it. There will be a village and the village is there for a very good reason because that ash from that volcano makes really good soil.

I'm having a hard time finding any white paper studies that show the addition of rock dust to soil is beneficial for immediate (within a few years) availability. Would you care to add some to the twirl-down information section? There's one study about basalt and sorghum that was statistically beneficial, but with the caveat of the soil being clay and highly acidic. They conclude that the cost / roi is kinda negligible currently (and let's be honest, most cannabis growers have a tighter budget). What it may do, that's of interest to gardeners, is increase fungal growth - but I'm not really convinced the addition of rock dust is necessary unless you're trying to balance a severe issue within the soil pH. Rock Dust just takes, way way too long to break down for the home gardener's use in regards to mineralization. I don't see any major drawback to using it, but there are better things, IMO, to spend money on for plant nutrition and soil health. title of the study: Increased yield and CO2 sequestration potential with the C4 cereal Sorghum bicolor cultivated in basaltic rock dust-amended agricultural soil.

@@conradmbugua9098 I'm not sure I understand. Would watching this video not and deciding based on Jeremy's recommendation not be "waiting for someone to tell [me] it's beneficial?" What I like about the new wave of growing community is the integration of good science. Jeremy uses a soil testing company and that's awesome. Other's also are providing solid information such as Bruce Bugbee. I just like knowing that, what I spend money on is of use. Jeremy runs a great channel and appears to be a good dude with good products, so my question above wasn't meant as a slight to him. He runs a company that thrives on sales, which I totally understand. I just like knowing where people (companies) get their information from, is all. If that makes sense?

I appreciate the knowledge. Living in Florida we have basically pure sand. But some parts mostly right at the beach there is coquina rock. Wonder if I can collect the rock and basically crush it or add small amounts of the tiny ones to the soil. The rock is mostly sand and crushed shells. Thinking maybe the bacteria in the soil is adapted to breaking that down already

@FreeRangeRoss

I know this comment is old, but - either will work about the same/not hurt the plant. However, if you must, I'd take the free rock dust. Rock dust really isn't of major use to a plant or soil health until it breaks down (unless you are trying to fix a pH problem), and that takes a long, long time. There are better things to spend your money on, if plant and soil health for a garden are what you're after... my 2 cents.

im using stepwell super soil and gaia living soil 1-0-0. if im lowering my filtered water PH from 8-8.4 using apple cider vinegar do i have to add glacial rock dust to both these soils? to counteract the negative effects of the apple cider vinegar to ph down my water? Please help!! 2nd part of my question is how exactly do i add it to my soil? how much do i use in 7 gallon pots? do i mix it in or sprinkle on top.. ugh didnt think i needed it but the guy at the grow store kinda forced it on me when i was asking about ways to lower my waters PH when using super/living soil was i scammed?
@FreeRangeRoss
@FreeRangeRoss 2 жыл бұрын
I know this is old, but if you are already fixing a pH issue with more immediately active ingredients, rock dust isn't going to do much. It won't hurt, of course, but it honestly isn't something worth spending money on. Basalt *can* help with acidic soil, same with some lime stone, Rock dust just takes way way too long to be of benefit to a plant or soil health, you're better off spending your money on organic matter that will feed pH fixing microbes and then compost.

How come your basalt rock dust weighs 1ton (1000kg) per cubic yard (764,5 liters) so a density of 1.3 kg/L, when the density of basalt rock dust according to google is more than double that, between 2.8 to 3 kg/L ? If google AI is correct about basalt rock dust density, then 1 cubic yard of it should weigh more than 2 tons. Thank you.

i dont like mixing soil or rock minerals with compost or organic matter, i also am not sure if the soil has minerals that organic matter doesnt have enough of so i basically grow some things in straight compost and then other thinks in the native soil with compost on top, i noticed in the forest that theres a layer of compost on top of clean mineral soil, i prefer to keep them seperate cause if u mix them together theres no undoing it and i feel if you mix them together you ruin the native soil by making it not dry out fast enough which soffocates plants and then you are also ruining the compost by basically filling in all the oxygen space

because it's not really borne out in scientific literature - that adding rock dust does much to remediate soil - at least, not within our lifetime. Unless you're suffering from some severe pH issue. There was one study on sorghum that shows a slightly statistically relevant increase, but that again was to fix clay+acidic soil, which the home gardener that grows in tents or raised beds isn't going to run into (clay). if pH really is a problem, there are better solutions.
