Why Rockstar Abandoned Red Dead Online.
Rockstar Games probably thought Red Dead Online was going to be a masterpiece like GTA Online, but instead, was abandoned for GTA 6. RDR2 was great, but with a lack of RDO Updates, Content, and over having their imagination held back back by the era, Rockstar left RDO to end in 2022. So today we look at RDO compared to GTA Online as well as some concerns from the community, to find out exactly why Red Dead Online Failed.

The setting of Red Dead Online and its limited opportunities for adding new content were probably one of the biggest reasons why they scrapped the original idea of 70s/80s based story in GTA VI and focused on a game set in modern day America instead. They probably didn't have enough time for creating brand new, present day world just for the new Online. It's kinda shame, personally I'm not against modern day story, but the story set in the times of cocaine cowboys sounds much more interesting than the adventures of two small-time robbers in 2020s Florida.

So if they have to choose between for example rdr3 without a succesful online mode which could make them $2 billion or GTA 7 with a succesful online mode which could make them $7 billion. Then they will obviously choose the project that could make them the most money.

It always comes down to money, of course. Its not even like RDO couldn't support itself, it just wasn't making rockstar games unbelievable rich. Red Dead Online has plenty of freedom. Rockstar just didn't take advantage of it. Properties, free roam robberies, and straight up adding Mexico are just 3 things Rockstar could have done to make money and still be creative. It's clear that if Rockstar had just let the developers do their thing, RDO would currently be one of the best multiplayer games of all time. The fact that we don't have a feature to let us have a dedicated quickdraw duel with another player is a HUGE disappointment, and there is no doubt that Rockstar doesn't care about RDO or the RDO player base whatsoever just because its not making them richer. Edit: just thought I'd add this in, I don't want to sound critical of your video. I think its very well made and you do bring up a lot of good points, as well as provided good insight to someone like myself who has never played GTAO. That being said, I respectfully disagree that RDO was abandoned because of lack of freedom.

I can give a few examples that would make the game more entertaining and immersive without the need for major update or role. *Ability to rob store in free roams *Create bank heists in instances *Players can actually sit in the saloon and buy food and drink with others *More food variety and also ability to make foods for your posse’s members beside the cripp stew *ability to spawn a campfire wherever they want to outside of town so they can hunt/fish and cook there instead of running back to their camp. Even the naturalist perk is still not immersive *Can interact with regular npcs the same way you can do in story mode. *More free roam events that occur between npcs *Stranger’s missions give more money *Can cook big fishes *Backpack so players can put big fish or small game animals in it

For starters they could have done a lazy copy paste bank and train robbery’s from storymode to online. I still play rdo and i wished we would get farms/ranches,breading and selling horses and so on…i would pay for content packages like that,seriously. The biggest problem imo is the lack to modify the game like you want regarding clothing,camps,moonshine shack,horses and sadles,bounty and hunting wagon and so on…that really sucks.

Saying they were limited with content is just not true. No, we did not need flying cars and horses… but the options for content are really wide-ranged. Properties, ranches, faming, business, horse breaking, train heists, bank heists, new map/locations. Let us go to Guarma or Mexico. Let me build my own ranch from the scratch, employ people there, let me be able to sell goodies on my ranch, more horses, wagons, let me own a small river boat, play more card games, add dominoes, more missions, finish the freaking story of Jessica LeClerk (find a different actress for her if the original one left you)..let me sell moonshine to other players, let me take my dog for hunting. It didnt need to be done all at once… monthly or every two months updates would be just fine.

I tell you what the problem also is, the game is on ps4 and xbox one, and rdr put those console at the limit and overheat them, there is a lot of content they could add, missions, a creator of mission, guns, tresure hunt about conqustadores or vikings with Madame Nazar, hunting mission with Gus, HEISTS, creation of saddles or adding saddles created by the commiunity, clothes creation or created by the commiunity, jojo references about sbr, these are some of the ideas i came up in 5 min, imagine rockstar and the community how much they can create. The problem is that the old gen consoles is at their limit with rdr2 and rockstar knows that it needs a new version but they don't want to relase it yet because of how community will react.

I spent more time playing this game then any other game and it makes so so angry and sad with how they online was destroyed. Hopefully red dead 3 they will have a better idea of what they wanna do with the online this time around but that’s prob 10 or more years from now

I have to say, with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 being the best games of all time and the best Rockstar Games and their most successful games, it would make more sense to capitalize on the online modes for both of their best games, that way more money and it keeps your players engaged and yes both of these games need some single player DLC and if I'm being honest I'd rather have more online updates and single player DLC for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, not like I'm gonna play or buy any other games anyways ☠️

Don't get me wrong, it's fun exploring the world with my friends but the idea of doing missions in that setting have always kinda bored me. Whenever I play RDR2, I'm usually just playing around in story mode - which is incredible!

Using period of time as an excuse is just evidence of poor creativity… Dog sledding could’ve been a thing… a Mexico expansion could’ve been a thing… more variety of pets could’ve been a thing… farming could’ve been a thing… owning in game shops that could actually trade with other players could’ve been a thing. The game could have gone so many ways but they just gave up, which is sad since it really is a beautiful game.

They should’ve leaned more into the role playing aspect instead of trying to make GTA old west. Make the skill trees for players and their different roles more in depth pushing the community to build an economy inside the game. A bounty system for players who kill other players which people could collect on. Have a real sherif role for player to role play as law enforcement ect

No, I was simply using it as an analogy. The way GTA V adds futuristic flying bikes and hovercrafts, would be along the same lines as Rockstar adding real cars to RDO, which no one wants. So Rockstar was way more limited with content they could add because of the time period.

Just go balls to the wall with it. Give us customizable carriages. Maybe train car bases that move around? Hot air balloons, early turn of the century cars and planes. If you’re going to report, report on what they actually said. They never said it was being put on hold for GTA VI. They never divulged GTA VI publicly. GTA VI wasn’t publicly acknowledged until they were hacked and the subsequent release of the development of it. This occurred well after Rockstar said they were turning their efforts elsewhere. You may be drawing that line now, but that is not what they reported. So, don’t say that’s what they said, when they didn’t say that at all. If you can’t get those basic details right, how can anybody put any confidence in anything else you are “reporting” or “commenting” about? Are games your only focus and don’t see what is transpiring in the real world? People have lost confidence in the MSM because of such misinformation and CNN is a clear example of what will transpire when you abandon real info/news for misinformation. They have lost a large portion of what you may term here as your “base” or viewers and have downsized dramatically because of a loss of revenue. Or is that all your looking for at this point, a quick cash in despite the road ahead? Maybe you’re no better than the MSM and Rockstar’s constant money grabs…!

For the time period RDR 2 is set, could evovle in Online mode, into Industralisation period. and we as cowbows sould adapt to the new world, as it would evovl toward in time period for each update. RDR 2 Have alot pointaiale, and still hold it.. I hope they will return to it after GTA 6

The time period maybe the real reason why Red Dead Online flopped. I played the game a lot right after it’s launch and the graphics and scenery were amazing however, it was incredibly boring and grindy and not as appealing to GTA Online which I already played before RDR II released which that game has far more content to offer because it’s set in a modern time period with awesome vehicles to drive around in Los Santos while in Red Dead Online, your riding a horse you constantly have to feed and care for which made the experience more tedious and annoying at times crossing this massive rural map on dirt trails instead of actual road pavement like in GTA 5 where I can drive a fast supercar in comfort and not have to care as much than a horse. RDR2’s story and the single-player experience is what really mattered and made the game amazing and not so much for it’s online.

The real issue is rockstar thinking that rdo needs to fit the same framework of gta online. It could’ve been a much more tame world that leaned into its strengths like survival and gang activities like having to rob a bank every now and then, later having to evacuate the area and start settlements to evade the law. But no, those ideas aren’t able to milked to death and monetized in every way shape and form. There was never an issue with the base game, rather the greed that permeates the industry. When rdo failed to match the shark card income, take two definitely axed it.
