The ol' quartz crisis really gave a whack to the watch world. Brands died, re-designed, got bought up, combined, you name it! Today we are looking at how brands reacted, copied the big players (Rolex being one main one) and did what they had to do to survive. However, now that the world is starting to look into watches and appreciate them more -- it's time to rev those design engines back up and get things moving!

I think watch design is a sign of the times. The 60s and 70s were a surge in creativity (for a number of reasons, drugs, counter culture, anti-war sentiment) which influence art in all its forms. Particularly fashion, style, music, film but I think also watch design. The quartz crisis was a crisis but not convinced it influenced -external- watch design. There are some great really out there quartz and mechanical designs from this period, which is more a sign of the times. And this led to fads with some brands that surged, some since faded (eg Piaget) and some evolved and endured through changes in the time (Rolex etc) But this is cyclical (like fashion) and after a more reserved period culturally (with economic crisis, Covid etc) the next phase of individuality and creativity, and made possible by improvements in technology. and automation, is the era of the micro brands. We’re also seeing new brands setting some of the new design trends (Richard Mille, F P Journe etc) Great thought provoking video as always

Rolex designs achieve a balance of flashiness without sacrificing masculinity and macho without sacrificing blingy-ness. This is really crucial for the contemporary male market, especially growth markets south and east of Europe, where displaying bling is important, but avoiding all risk of potentially appearing effeminate is crucial

I really need one of the dressier brands (JLC, Longines, Breguet, etc) to come out with a cushion case watch, preferably in salmon or emerald color.

I don’t think people became “weird” so much as less boring and more individual. People started taking more creative chances and making choices that weren’t as status quo. I haven’t gotten through the whole video yet, but I’d say today, especially people with some extra discretionary income, are going BACK to the days of plainer styles, this whole new “stealth wealth” flies in the face of standing out creatively. it can be elegant, sure, but it can also be boring. It’s all about muted, blended colors and textures. I hope we will continue to see watchmakers push their own creative limits.

I have noticd that a bunch of people in rhe comments seem to have an isuue with watch flippers. I find this bizarre in the extreme. Watches are no longer products we need to live good lives. This is especially true for luxury watches. Good Lord, are our lives THAT boring that some of us get worked up over how other people deal with their LUXURY possessions?

Actually the Swiss industry has in my view missed the biggest trend and was blindly and wrongly focusing on milking customers in the last 2-3 years. World lovers know the quartz crisis and right now the Apple Watches are slowly but surely doing the same thing to the Swiss watches. The game that the Swiss watch industry is playing pushed many rich/ affluent men to consider trying the latest and affordable gadgets and now they are obviously getting in trend and are in love in it to even revert to Swiss watch again. Apple watch ultra, for example, is a Swiss watch killer. That rich man who can afford Daytona at grey dealer price has decided to quit the game and go with ultra which looks unique and expensive. Don’t believe me ? Look around. And they will now chase the next version year after year and give rolex ap Patek a miss. I am telling you, the crisis is coming . Many are blinded , but they will see it soon .

personally, i think the gloss is wearing off . theres too many reasonably priced , and arguably more limited, reasonably priced alternatives out there. the movements are now on par if not better and cheaper to replace than or maintain than rolex and there are much more interesting dials, designs and models. personall, i prefer the ETA based tudors to the new in house stuff.... its a shame they didnt make the the north flag with an ETA movement !

In Europe, Rolex is now completely blue collar. Educated people won't touch it with a barge pole. I think the flashy shiny nature of these watches are so old fashioned now. They have moved away from their primary function, and become jewellery. And the movements! They have become the builder's "Cartier". Bizarrely Cartier have moved, and reinvented themselves, and are becoming a realistic proposition again.

@@chrollifanboy28 It's true. Bricklayers. plumbers electricians, even roofers etc here can easily make £500 per day. That's about $650 US per day, much more than most white collar workers, a lot of it cash in hand tax free too. Rolex has a serious image problem, they are seen as boorish low class status symbols.
