Yo! I played for 1000s of hours from 2004 to 2007! It was one of the coolest most amazing video gaming experiences of all time! RS2 was 🔥 legendary 🔥 2004 to 2007. Apparently RuneScape classic 2000 to 2003 was dope too… like for it’s time I guess. But sounds like you weren’t that into that era of it huh hahaha. Yeah. FFXIV's insistence on having only non-instanced housing is imo designed to keep players who would have unsubscribed subscribed to the game as getting a house in populated servers like Balmung is incredibly hard. It's why I rolled my eyes when Bloomberg said FFXIV solved the housing crisis when for a time during the influx of players from WoW, there was even an apartment shortage.

Honestly that is one of the most interesting parts of that game to me. Especially when you had to sit there trying to snipe a house for like 24 hours, although I guess bots made that unfair to real players trying to get a house that way. I don't play the game so I wouldn't know the specifics, but non-instanced housing is a very cool thing IMO.

The orignal concept for player houses existing within the world reminds me of how Tibia does it, mightve even inspired the Gower brothers considering the age of both MMOs. Was always fun in in tibia to walk through the towns where dozens of the houses were all player owned and see how everyone decorated/cluttered their own little spaces, with furniture or rare/expensive items.

UO had the best housing system in many ways. Build anywhere, server locked, but every server has a PVP realm and a PVE realm. Instanced is more realistic for RS but i always thought instances neighborhoods should be an option.

I started playing RuneScape 2 in 2005. RuneScape was the first MMO I tried. As soon as I got used to being part of a community of other players on the game, I wanted my own player house. The year or so I played before it became a thing felt like longer than that, but I was much younger then too. When I tried Everquest 2 many years later, its housing felt like more of a compromise on having housing on the map. The instance is in the door, not a portal. They have mailboxes and buy/rent options if you can't afford to outright buy a house yet. I like both for different reasons. At this point, I've spent so many years on RuneScape it's become sort of my home-MMO, even when I switch to other MMOs for a while. But I'd say it's a generous stretch to say RuneScape's housing is essential at all. It's just a nice thing to have and decorate.

If you guys wish to play a game where houses are out in the overworld, I recommend playing Ultima Online. That's where Andrew Gower got the idea from. The difference is that UO had different servers and the landmass was made to accomodate housing in various areas. If you wanna see what an overpopulated overworld looks like with many players holding houses, play UO Outlands. Thankfully they're adding house taxes to it so players are now dropping held houses

I just left it open ended because im not sure how it could be done from a technical standpoint. the portal could take you to an area with houses, the houses would still be instanced, but you could hang out with other players in the "neighborhood" and see all the houses in that neighborhood.

I was in middle school in 2006 & playing in the computer lab with everyone each morning around the time when housing released; we all knew about month before the release that player owned housing was coming & there were lots of rumors in person at school + on the forums & other sites or in-game. A lot of people thought it would be similar to Farming, which came out roughly the year before(?) in that there would be plots of land to build a house on.

The old housing system was a relic of its time. Older mmos tended to have competitive housing and they liked it for community reasons even though it's absolutely archaic.

i think if i remember correctly they also tried to let players build there own housing in falador a section of it to the east was empty. I remember the day it opened for people to build it was a mess. People building walls on top of each other and it crashed the whole server lol.

Lineage 2 had a limited number of clan houses. At the height of the game, they were virtually priceless. They would be bought and sold in USD because the game didn't allow enough currency for the sale. I still remember getting ours in Gludin... 😊

Yo! Lineage 2!!!! I played that like 20 years ago as a child in Crimea! That and Counter Strike were my first online video games! I would play those and GTA 3 and Vice City (not online)! When I was like 8 to 12 years old! Then I played RuneScape (2) 2004 to 2007 when I was like 11 to 14 or so! Now I just got back into online gaming playing OSRS over the course of the last year at the start of my 30s hahaha. But that’s wild I don’t come across people familiar with Lineage 2 much! That was a great game! I always played as a Dark Elf hahaha! It was so dope! Did you know you could still play it! Elmorelabs put out their own Version that’s just like the game from our childhood! It’s sort of a private server I guess but it’s pretty much exactly like the real thing! The only thing is everyone one that plays only speaks Russian! I speak fluent Russian and can read it perfectly but I cannot type/write it because I’ve lived in California for the last 20 years… it’s kind of wild thinking about it I speak it perfectly but because I speak it all the time but I haven’t needed to write in it in over 20 years so I lost my ability to do it well… I could but it would take me LITERALLY 100 times longer to type something in Russian than I could type it in English… So the point of that is that it was difficult to play because of that. So for someone who can’t even read what the other people are saying it would be even harder! Hahaha

I was there in 2006 and honestly player owned houses sucked. Massive money sinks with no real rewards. It was just a way to flex. Which isn't bad, but it's all it was. I'm glad they added stuff to make player houses worth it. I kind of wish there expanded other aspects though.

It's a shame that only OSRS has followed through on making POHs useful modern content. RS3 has ignored them due to the project being too big for the payoff, supposedly, even though they do a lot of big projects all the time. They did at least decide to put all new Construction content in Fort Forinthry, which is essentially one giant POH that isn't instanced, so that's certainly better than nothing. Still, Construction remains the only aspect in which OSRS is just the objectively better game.
