A major added bonus for Russia is that this route will open up it's main rivers to inland navigation. Most of it's rivers flow North, towards the largely inaccessible Arctic Ocean. Throughout most of Russia's history this meant a big competitive disadvantage compared to the rest of Europe, which is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, bringing direct shipping routes from major cities to the whole world.

We are definitely turning a new focus to the arctic. Just, we are not focusing on trade, instead we are trying to militarize it. Because we are complete idiots. The melting of ice in the north pole will give Russia such a strategic advantage that it has never seen before, and this modern-day Russian silk road is just the beginning. Especially since almost none of Russia's major cities are on the coast, compared to the huge western cities that will get absolutely destroyed by rising sea levels. Russia would most likely be the only country to benefit from all the ice in the world melting. Due to many things such as the northern regions of the world becoming the more ideal temperature for life, which Russia controls most of. This will bring so many migrants into Russia that it could finally become a global superpower. Many will say Russia will not benefit due to the war, but that's far from the truth. Pretty much every emerging economy is located in Africa, with these countries typically wanting to cut ties with their colonizers (the west). As soon to be the strongest country in the world, China depends heavily on Russia, so Russia is in the best position for the future of humanity.

Another interesting aspect in the development of the Russian north is floating nuclear power plants. Due to the remoteness of the northern coast from the most populated and industrially developed areas, there are certain problems with electricity supply. There is no breakthrough, as a Northern traffic route still has limitation, and only a few million tones are passing through. The idea behind is to monopolize the route to Europe only, and by no means has any impact on World trade, as the only recipient of this route is China. The fact that Russia needs to spend almost a trillion USD over a few decades, and still use the arctic breakers to clear routes indicates that the Northern sea route still is technically a gamble and a large money sink. Because of the geo-politics, US/EU can sanctions any shipping companies using the route, force a reroute and by denying port entrance. That would make any investments on the entire Northern circle by Russia useless. Does the Russian government making money off the Northern route? Will be interesting to know, Russia has plans not only to create the optical cable channel the 'Polar Express', but to create a bunch of the mega-data centers in North, providing that service for the international data giants, like Google or something like it in China, including for own national ones. That can decrease the cost of usage of such data centers dramatically, since more than 50% of electricity/energy consumption in a such datacenter is used for the cooling of the huge server farms! The expensive cooling task will be much simplified in the Northern conditions, obviously... The only problem so far is to create a network of new powerplants and electric lines in the areas of Northern Russia (a huge amount of electricity still required for datacenters anyway), but I do know Russia has a lot of plans for doing that, including the mobile sea nuclear plant platforms!

The US has a gdp of about 21.4 trillion dollars. Russia has about 1.7 trillion, so not only is the US' gdp about a dozen times larger, its gdp is growing faster so the gap is only growing. The Russian goverment is predicting this project will grow gdp by 2% a year, they have a history of seriously overstimating projects like these (who doesnt in fairness?) But even if we take that at face value it changes basically nothing. As to the military - Russia cannot hope to compete with NATO and this port really doesnt change that. The US alone has about 3.4 million tons of warships. Russia can muster maybe 750,000 tons total (also the US' ships are generally more advanced). This seems like a great project for Russia but its important not to overstate its impact.

The northern sea route along Russia's coats opens up every summer and has been used by less ice tolerant ships for over 100 years. Ice Breakers have got bigger and better since WW2 as well as other technologies for driving through ice, which will give the impression that Arctic is melting. Also, maximum Arctic ice occurs 3 months after the shortest day and minimum ice occurs 3 months after the longest day, which indicates that the polar ice is driven by temperatures from the lower latitudes.

The short and long-term outcomes of such a project economically environmentally and geopolitical are hard to calculate. Because such large projects generate so much data noise that nuances are easily lost and it's the subtle details of such a project that can accumulate to decide its ultimate success or failure. Russian governance is actually very efficient. Very impressive in handling an incredibly harsh terrain that is thousand times larger than that of Singapore run by an authoritarian system that the West lauds as success. If only the West keeps their hands off (e.g. regime change activities) and learn to respect the red lines of their superpower counterparts (e.g. Monroe Doctrine equivalent to promote a neutral Ukraine) collaboration between them isn't impossible. But western arrogance and entitlement will continue to try to sabotage a collaborative multipolar world. Western governments also need to stop the farce virtue signaling when Russia, for it's size, is only responsible for 5% of total greenhouse gas emission. They're fourth but U.S. is 2nd and worst with 15%, China is first (28%) which U.S. outsource their business and largely benefits from. Not to mention the West's destruction in Amazon rainforests and exploitation elsewhere (Africa, Middle East, Indonesia, etc).
@Atlantis-tx2mv2 жыл бұрын
Geographic size is rather not a point to greenhouse gas emission rate, population and economic activities are. In the other hand, pipelines and oil and gas exploration infrastructure (and millions of abandoned oil and gas wells) are the greater points of methane emission (far more serious than CO2 emission for greenhouse effect), which Russia has a lot in its overwhelming territory landscape... If you sums that with melting permafrost and the green house emissions associated to that, and, last but not the least, millions of hectares of Siberian forest burning each year because of draws and continuous hotter and hotter summers there, we have the recipe for a global catastrophe!

@@Yukon-Gold Your account was made a month ago, you're an obvious troll. Russia is selling cheap gas to countries that are willing to send Russia ammunition and weapons, that was the whole point of Xi Jinping visiting Russia! For Putin to beg for aid in the Ukraine war, Russia has a extremely weak army, China is not here to be Russia's friend, China is here to take advantage of a weak Russia and rob it of it's natural resources, Russia and Putin will become a mere Chinese puppet in the future if Putin keeps signing shady Chinese contracts.

as a person that spent years living in Svalbard, i can only say that tourism is the worst thing happening in the Arctic. Yes, it payed my bills for years but the environmental impact of tourism is much much bigger that the tourist itself thinks. And Russia can defend ANY area in the Arctic; many of Belgorod’s (newest submarine) missions are to maintain and defend Russia’s extensive developments and a few crewed bases, on the seafloor around northern arctic circle. Yes, other nations have paper claims to the seafloor, but Russia owns it by virtue of being able to occupy and defend the areas they have claimed. Russia also claims and can defend the northern sea routes being cleared of ice, thanks to warming waters there. Belgorods in those areas equates to ownership.

in all fairness, cutting a shipping route down from 48 to 19 days is actually very good for the environment ... a faster and more modern traderoute should be welcomed by the green people. And if the west is concerned about the influence and economic gains of russia ... just invest in your infrastruture and new technologies, negating the dependency on those asian ressources. Also we profit greatly of those ressources, for every dollar russia gets we generate far more from this. So stop all this russia bashing and whining, such projects will connect economies and we know these dependencies secure peace far better then anything else.
